Isaiah 61
Jesus citing his mission to share with the poor and freedom for the captive
1 The Lord Yahweh’s Spirit is on me; because Yahweh has anointed me to preach good news to the humble. He has sent me to bind up the broken hearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and release to those who are bound;
2 to proclaim the year of Yahweh’s favor, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all who mourn;
3 to provide for those who mourn in Zion, to give to them a garland for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they may be called trees of righteousness, the planting of Yahweh, that he may be glorified.
4 They will rebuild the old ruins. They will raise up the places long devastated. They will repair the ruined cities, that have been devastated for many generations.
5 Strangers will stand and feed your flocks, and foreigners will work your fields and your vineyards.
6 But you will be called Yahweh’s priests. Men will call you the servants of our God. You will eat the wealth of the nations, and you will boast in their glory.
7 Instead of your shame you will have double. Instead of dishonor, they will rejoice in their portion. Therefore in their land, they will possess double. Everlasting joy will be to them.
8 “For I, Yahweh, love justice. I hate robbery and iniquity. I will give them their reward in truth, and I will make an everlasting covenant with them.
9 Their offspring will be known among the nations, and their offspring among the peoples. All who see them will acknowledge them, that they are the offspring which Yahweh has blessed.”
10 I will greatly rejoice in Yahweh! My soul will be joyful in my God; for he has clothed me with the garments of salvation. He has covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decks himself with a garland, and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.
11 For as the earth produces its bud, and as the garden causes the things that are sown in it to spring up; so the Lord Yahweh will cause righteousness and praise to spring up before all the nations.

Recap
The message in order, in a few minutes of reading.
This message came from Pastor Mark on the Sunday before Christmas, looking at the responses of the shepherds, Mary, and Joseph when they each received a word from God through an angel. The central question he kept returning to was a simple one: when a message comes toward you, what do you do with it? He drew a line from those first-century responses all the way to how we receive and act on what God asks of us today.
What was said
Pastor Mark opened by acknowledging the weight of the season, noting that joy and grief sit right next to each other at Christmas. There had been an avalanche on the pass the day before, leaving a man on life support. The prior day had also marked the one-year anniversary of the death of a woman from the congregation. He asked for prayer as he carried that pastoral burden, and set the tone for a message that was not going to stay in the abstract.
He introduced the shepherds as people on the lowest rung of the social ladder, the kind of work that had to be done but earned no respect. The word used for "keeping watch" in the text, he pointed out, carries the sense of ongoing, careful guarding, as though the flock is something precious. He illustrated this with a memory of hiking in the High Atlas Mountains in Morocco with his wife and son, where they passed shepherds who had stacked flat rocks around ravines to protect their sheep from harm.
When the angel appeared to the shepherds, the first thing said was "fear not," and Pastor Mark noted that this is almost always the first thing angels say, because receiving a message you do not know what to do with is frightening. The angel told them a savior had been born "for you," and then "this will be a sign for you," both times making it personal. A multitude of the heavenly host then appeared, and the congregation heard both the New American Standard wording, "peace among people with whom he is pleased," and the King James wording, "peace and goodwill toward men." He said both are true, that the sovereign God extends his love outward and those who receive it are the ones on whom his favor rests, and that our finite minds struggle to hold both at once.
He walked through Mary's response and Joseph's response alongside the shepherds', showing them in parallel. Mary was perplexed but not paralyzed. Joseph, described as a righteous man who planned to send Mary away quietly rather than expose her, received his word in a dream and simply woke up and did what he was told. Joseph actually received three separate dreams with commands, and each time the text records that he got up and went. The pattern across all three of them was the same: a message came toward them, and they acted on it.
What struck Pastor Mark about the shepherds was not any long description of worship or adoration in the text. They went in a hurry, they found the baby exactly as described, and then they told Mary and Joseph what they had been told. They carried the message forward. He connected this to a missions slide shown earlier in the service, saying it moved him that a small gathering of people in Jackson can have an effect on the other side of the world simply by being faithful with the message.
He then brought in a passage from Luke where a woman calls out "blessed is the womb that bore you," and Jesus responds that more than that, blessed are those who hear the word of God and keep it. The word for "keep" there, Pastor Mark said, is the same word used for what the shepherds were doing with their flocks, guarding and observing carefully for the sake of well-being. He carried that through to Revelation, where a blessing is given to the one who reads, hears, and keeps what is written, and then to Ephesians, where apostles, prophets, evangelists, and pastors and teachers are all described as carriers of messages, given for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry.
He closed by asking whether we sit ready each morning to receive what God has for us that day. He pointed back to Joseph, who was legally within his rights to treat Mary harshly but chose the way of love and forbearance, and said that love has to be the way we carry whatever message we are given. The call was not complicated: hear the word, guard it as something precious, and act on it.

Here is a guide we have prepared for you: the passages in order, questions for the group, and room to write.
- Pastor Aaron talked about the joy of the Christmas season existing alongside real pain and grief. How have you experienced that tension personally, and how does it shape the way you receive the Christmas message?
- The shepherds were described as the lowest of the low, and yet the angel said the message was 'for you' twice. What does it mean to you personally that the announcement was framed that way, as something directed at you rather than just at everyone in general?
