The Mystery of Godliness

May 13, 2018 · 1 Timothy

Scripture referenced 5 passages

The passage this message was preached from, in full, with every other passage it reached for.

  • 1 Timothy 3:14-16 the main text of the sermon, covering behavior in the household of God and the Christ hymn

    14 These things I write to you, hoping to come to you shortly;

15 but if I wait long, that you may know how men ought to behave themselves in God’s house, which is the assembly of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.

16 Without controversy, the mystery of godliness is great: God was revealed in the flesh, justified in the spirit, seen by angels, preached among the nations, believed on in the world, and received up in glory.

Isaiah 43:1-2

quoted when discussing passing through the waters, God redeeming and calling by name

1 But now Yahweh who created you, Jacob, and he who formed you, Israel says: “Don’t be afraid, for I have redeemed you. I have called you by your name. You are mine.

2 When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they will not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned, and flame will not scorch you.

Acts 17

mentioned as an example of Paul quoting pagan philosophers

1 Now when they had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where there was a Jewish synagogue.

2 Paul, as was his custom, went in to them, and for three Sabbath days reasoned with them from the Scriptures,

3 explaining and demonstrating that the Christ had to suffer and rise again from the dead, and saying, “This Jesus, whom I proclaim to you, is the Christ.”

4 Some of them were persuaded, and joined Paul and Silas, of the devout Greeks a great multitude, and not a few of the chief women.

5 But the unpersuaded Jews took along some wicked men from the marketplace, and gathering a crowd, set the city in an uproar. Assaulting the house of Jason, they sought to bring them out to the people.

6 When they didn’t find them, they dragged Jason and certain brothers before the rulers of the city, crying, “These who have turned the world upside down have come here also,

7 whom Jason has received. These all act contrary to the decrees of Caesar, saying that there is another king, Jesus!”

8 The multitude and the rulers of the city were troubled when they heard these things.

9 When they had taken security from Jason and the rest, they let them go.

10 The brothers immediately sent Paul and Silas away by night to Beroea. When they arrived, they went into the Jewish synagogue.

11 Now these were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, examining the Scriptures daily to see whether these things were so.

12 Many of them therefore believed; also of the prominent Greek women, and not a few men.

13 But when the Jews of Thessalonica had knowledge that the word of God was proclaimed by Paul at Beroea also, they came there likewise, agitating the multitudes.

14 Then the brothers immediately sent out Paul to go as far as to the sea, and Silas and Timothy still stayed there.

15 But those who escorted Paul brought him as far as Athens. Receiving a commandment to Silas and Timothy that they should come to him very quickly, they departed.

16 Now while Paul waited for them at Athens, his spirit was provoked within him as he saw the city full of idols.

17 So he reasoned in the synagogue with the Jews and the devout persons, and in the marketplace every day with those who met him.

18 Some of the Epicurean and Stoic philosophers also were conversing with him. Some said, “What does this babbler want to say?” Others said, “He seems to be advocating foreign deities,” because he preached Jesus and the resurrection.

19 They took hold of him, and brought him to the Areopagus, saying, “May we know what this new teaching is, which is spoken by you?

20 For you bring certain strange things to our ears. We want to know therefore what these things mean.”

21 Now all the Athenians and the strangers living there spent their time in nothing else, but either to tell or to hear some new thing.

22 Paul stood in the middle of the Areopagus, and said, “You men of Athens, I perceive that you are very religious in all things.

23 For as I passed along, and observed the objects of your worship, I found also an altar with this inscription: ‘TO AN UNKNOWN GOD.’ What therefore you worship in ignorance, this I announce to you.

24 The God who made the world and all things in it, he, being Lord of heaven and earth, doesn’t dwell in temples made with hands,

25 neither is he served by men’s hands, as though he needed anything, seeing he himself gives to all life and breath, and all things.

26 He made from one blood every nation of men to dwell on all the surface of the earth, having determined appointed seasons, and the boundaries of their dwellings,

27 that they should seek the Lord, if perhaps they might reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from each one of us.

28 ‘For in him we live, and move, and have our being.’ As some of your own poets have said, ‘For we are also his offspring.’

29 Being then the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Divine Nature is like gold, or silver, or stone, engraved by art and design of man.

30 The times of ignorance therefore God overlooked. But now he commands that all people everywhere should repent,

31 because he has appointed a day in which he will judge the world in righteousness by the man whom he has ordained; of which he has given assurance to all men, in that he has raised him from the dead.”

32 Now when they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some mocked; but others said, “We want to hear you again concerning this.”

33 Thus Paul went out from among them.

34 But certain men joined with him, and believed, among whom also was Dionysius the Areopagite, and a woman named Damaris, and others with them.

Recap

The message in order, in a few minutes of reading.

On Mother's Day 2018, Pastor Carl walked First B through 1 Timothy 3:14-16, three verses that close with what scholars agree is an early Christian hymn about Christ. He used the occasion to let the congregation speak, asking people to name the hymns they hold onto, and weaving those songs into the passage's argument about who the church is and how that shapes the way we live.

What was said

Paul's shift in 1 Timothy 3:14 is personal. He has been giving Timothy lists of qualifications for overseers and deacons, attributes of character more than skills, and then suddenly he pivots: I hope to come to you soon. Pastor Carl noted that this reminds the reader it is a personal letter. Paul is saying he would rather be there in person, but he is writing it down so Timothy has it if he is delayed.

The goal of all those instructions about behavior is summed up in verse 15: knowing how one ought to behave in the household of God, which is the church of the living God. The church is called a pillar and buttress of the truth, not the only source of truth, but something that holds it up. The point is that behavior and belief are not separate. If someone says Jesus loves you and then cuts you off in traffic, their actions undermine what they claim to believe.

Verse 16 opens with "great indeed, we confess, is the mystery of godliness," and Pastor Carl returned to the word mystery from the previous week. A mystery in this sense is not something unknowable but something that takes familiarity with the story to grasp. Nobody has it fully figured out, and Paul acknowledges that before moving immediately into song.

What follows is a first-century hymn, likely a refrain, quoted by Paul within roughly thirty years of the resurrection. The six lines are: He was manifested in the flesh, vindicated by the spirit, seen by angels, proclaimed among the nations, believed on in the world, taken up in glory. Pastor Carl surveyed several ways commentators have read the structure, chronological, earthly and heavenly alternating, chiastic, emphatic verbs, and concluded that whatever the arrangement, it is simply a Christ-centered song.

He asked the congregation to name the hymns they carry with them, and people called out song after song: "What a Friend We Have in Jesus," "Holy Holy Holy," "Great Is Thy Faithfulness," "Blessed Assurance," "It Is Well with My Soul," "A Mighty Fortress Is Our God," "Amazing Grace," "How Great Thou Art," and many more. Pastor Carl joined in several of them from memory and connected a number of them to his mother and grandmother, noting that his mother's favorite, "In the Garden," was also her mother's favorite.

The hymn Paul quotes moves from the incarnation through proclamation to glory. Pastor Carl paused on the pairing of angels and nations: for a Jewish reader, to go from heavenly beings down to Gentiles, the lowest of the low in that world's reckoning, showed the sweep of what Christ accomplished. The gospel was believed on in this world, in real time, and there is still time now for people to respond before the final judgment.

The sermon closed where it began, with song. Pastor Carl brought the congregation to its feet for "Where He Leads Me, I Will Follow," framing it not as a performance but as an affirmation people were walking out the door to live. The service ended with a reading from Luke 12 and a benediction.

Doing a Bible study?

Here is a guide we have prepared for you: the passages in order, questions for the group, and room to write.

  1. Pastor Nathan talked about Paul reminding Timothy that his instructions about church behavior were written down so Timothy would have them even if Paul was delayed. What does it mean to you personally that the church is called 'a pillar and buttress of the truth,' and how does your own daily behavior connect to that role?
  2. Pastor Nathan said 'all of our behavior is grounded in who our savior is,' using the example of telling someone Jesus loves them and then cutting them off in traffic. Where in your own life do you notice the biggest gap between what you say you believe and how you actually act?

7:18 Speaker 1Amen. Y'all can have a seat. You sound good this morning too. That's really nice to hear it coming back this way and not just going out that way. Monday nights at first B are happening tomorrow night, Monday night, 06:00.
7:32 Starts down the hall over in the fellowship hall. Carl is preaching through Luke kinda section by section, and that should be good. Meal, music, and a message tomorrow night. By the way, if y'all ever think, you know what? I'd like to make a meal for that Monday night crowd.
7:48 We have a sign up sheet on the wall down there, and that's always available a few weeks out. If you think our small group could do that, and it would just be a good thing, you can do that. So we like to kinda keep it in house as it were. But if you want to do that, you're welcome to. Monday nights at first B, 06:00.
8:06 We do a potluck once a month, but most of the time we have a family or a small group or a person come in and set things up for us. So Monday nights, first B. Awana is happening tomorrow night, but this is the last one before the summer starts. Can you believe it? Last one before summer.
8:22 So that's happening tomorrow night in this room. That's what the big game circle is down on the floor. Awana is a kids club we have here every Monday night at 06:00. Kids matter to God and so it's a time where lots of volunteers pour scripture into the minds to get it to the hearts of the kids and since this is the last one, we'll have a big party next week after the 11:00 service. There will be a big Awana Grand Prix race track set up right down the center aisle here, and we'll have a pinewood derby as the close of the Awana season.
8:56 That's happening next week. Youth group is happening Tuesday night. Weather permitting, they'll probably be outside, but they'll start off in the building. 06:30 to eight is youth group right here, middle school and high school. My Sister's Closet.
9:09 This is happening next weekend. So Friday evening is when to drop off clothes that you no longer want, mildly used. Yes, ma'am. Okay. Okay, down there.
9:26 Okay. Okay. So Casey McCooey has had, and you can be praying for her, she had some knee surgery a while back and she's had complications and pneumonia. She's the one who usually heads this up, and she's insisting that she is going to do it this time too. So it's happening, but the drop offs, you could start about Wednesday bringing stuff in, and then Saturday from ten to twelve is the shopping time.
9:52 And $10 donation, you come in and treat it like your sister's closet. Just take whatever else that's in there that you want. I think that's the idea. The Bar J Chuckwagon is hosting a a lot of folks for supper every night all summer long, y'all know that. But the beginning of the summer, they do one of their shows on the Tuesday after Memorial Day.
10:13 That's the twenty ninth this year, Tuesday the twenty ninth. Gates will be open at 05:30 with dinner at seven auctions and all kinds of different ways to participate and help raise funds for the Turning Point Pregnancy Resource Center. And I'll just go ahead and say, they could use your help. This year is going to be tough. So if you are already a supporter and you think, you know, should I do more?
10:37 This would be a good time to do more. RJ Chuckwagon, you all know the show, most of you do. That'll be $25 for adults, dollars 12 for age 12 and under, and you have tickets for that, don't you Diane? All right. Rolling River Rampage is our Vacation Bible School.
10:53 That'll happen. It's a three day extravaganza this year, twenty fifth, twenty sixth, twenty seventh from 9AM to noon. You can sign up on our web page, the church website, firstbjackson.org, or you can speak to Liz Owings and she will be glad to hear from you. If you want to volunteer, you're welcome to volunteer. You want to sign up a child, the easiest way is through the website, but we can walk you through that.
11:16 If you need help, call the church. And I think that's it. Does anybody have something that I forgot? I will I will say this. Yesterday, we had a all church cleanup.
11:24 I mentioned it nine times last week probably but we had some folks show up yesterday from nine to twelve and they just went through this place as my mama would say like a white tornado. They just went through here and cleaned up a whole bunch of the things that are kinda yearly things. So if you notice that it's kinda spick and span even more so than usual, it's because a whole lot of people came together and made it happen, I wanted to say thank you about that. And anything else, you have a paper bulletin. If you didn't get one on the way in, you can get one on the way out, and you'll have it all written down in front of you to help you remember.
11:56 Anything else? Would you all stand up? My brother says that during this time we should play the music like that is circus music. He hates this portion of the I apologize if you hate it. But would you all greet one another?
12:09 Take care of this. Extend the right hand of Christian fellowship. We'll bring you back together with a song.
12:16 Speaker 2Okay. I will sing of my redeemer and his wondrous love to me on the cruel cross he suffered from the curse to set me free sing or sing of my redeemer with his blood he purchased me on the cross he sealed my pardon made me free I will tell wondrous story how my lost estate to save in his boundless love and mercy he the ransom freely gave sing or sing of my redeemer with his blood he purchased me on the cross he sealed my pardon paid the dead and made me free I will praise my dear redeemer his triumphant power I'll tell I hold the victory he giveth over sin and death and hell sing or sing of my redeemer with his blood he purchased me on the cross he sealed my pardon paid the debt and made me free I will sing of my redeemer and his heavenly love for me he he from death to life hath brought me son of God with him to be sing oh sing my redeemer with his blood he purchased me he purchased me on the cross he sealed my pardon pay he the death and made me free
15:42 Speaker 1Amen. Thought I'd try that without Scott and it just didn't go so well. I can see all of the words. Y'all can only see those words. Alright.
15:50 Near the cross. Oh, what a beautiful hymn this is. Near the cross. Amen. He's savoring every moment.
16:09 The sermon's coming.
16:19 Speaker 2Jesus keep me near the cross there are precious fountain free to all healing stream flows from Calvary's Mountain in the cross in the cross be my the cross a trembling soul love and mercy the bright and morning star sheds its beams around me in the cross in the cross be my glory till my raptured soul shall find rest beyond the cross oh lamb of God bring its saints me walk from day to day with its shadows on the cross in the cross be my glory till my raptured soul shall find rest beyond the river on the last. One more verse. Near the cross I watch and wait oh, being trusting ever till I reach the golden strand just beyond
19:27 Speaker 1Amen. Y'all can have a seat. Now, I'm going invite the frontline team to come forward. Thank you for doing that. Would you pray with me?
19:40 God, thank you for what a beautiful lord week this was. I saw sunshine and hope and I saw a rain that nourishes and the grass turning so green so fast. God, you're amazing. Heavens declare the glory of God and earth speaks it forth. It's just screaming lord about you, the creator, creation is singing your praises and we want to do the same lord.
20:05 I pray that you would spread your good gospel through your obedient people that you would, lord, through these redeemed ones, redeem others, that you would work through the message, the word of their testimony, and the blood of the lamb. I pray God that you would overcome every obstacle and you say that you will, that the gates of hell cannot stand against it. For this mighty moving force, lord, the love of God. Would you spread it to the ends of the earth through your obedient people? Right now, we will give lord resources.
20:41 We know that you've entrusted those resources with to us and we want to be faithful stewards with them. Would you take this, lord? And do with it as you will on earth as it is in heaven. Would you spread your good gospel? In Jesus name, would you bless these gifts?
20:59 Multiply them and the giver. Lord, would you bless them too? Jesus name. Lorraine, is that song a song? Is there other words to that song?
23:59 A heavenly choir is calling us as humans to come to God. Yes. Yeah. And receive the his eternal life. I started to say that is a it's got darkness in there.
24:08 I've heard you play that multiple times and and I love it. It sounds like there's it's difficult on earth here. It's difficult. There are times that are trying, but there's victory in Christ. You can hear every bit of that.
24:19 That's cool. That's really good. And music has a way of doing that. So I've asked you to think about hymns. I've been asking you to think about it because I'm gonna ask you in a minute to start telling me some lines for some hymns, okay, that you hold on to.
24:32 We're talking about first Timothy three fourteen through 16. That's only three verses. You know that. Three verses, a song, and a prayer. Now, I say three verses.
24:42 There are three verses, fourteen, fifteen, 16. At the end of verse 16, it's Paul is quoting from a song. Everybody that studied this agrees that it is a hymn from around that time period about Christ. It's a very high Christology or a Christ centered hymn. And then we'll have a prayer.
25:02 We'll close after that but three verses of song and a prayer. I'm going to let you add to that. I want for you to be thinking about songs because I want for you to tell me, what are the songs that you hold on to? Alright? We've been talking in first Timothy three, one through seven, then eight through 13.
25:20 First of all, it was the attributes or qualifications of an elder, an overseer, and that they should be these type of people. And then qualifications for deacon, women, wives, is the next section eight through 13, and it is the they should be these type of people. Attributes, you could say qualifications. When you are choosing overseers, leaders for the church, and when you are choosing deacons, servants of the church, official capacity of office, then they should be this way. Now, it gives attributes, but it does not give skills necessarily.
25:55 It's not saying they should be necessarily a great business person or must be a certain way. Except for teaching, it does say they should be able to teach or apt to teach. But most of them are about characteristics of the person. And so he's been doing this and been saying it, and it sounds like do this, don't do that. Live this way, not that way.
26:16 That's good. I'm fond of saying Christianity is not a list of do's and don'ts. Now Paul does have several lists of do's and don'ts. When you're choosing your leaders, they should be people that fit this category and not these categories but then, he turns really personal back to it. All of a sudden, it's a switch back and he goes, I hope to come to you soon.
26:36 It's a personal letter. It reminds us, oh yeah, this is a personal letter. Now, a lot of places we build our ecclesiology, the church on the doctrine. Well, this is not terribly doctrinal passage. Now, it will be.
26:49 The next chapter will be but he's changing the channel. Right now, he's going from something that is a personal letter and some instructions about how Timothy should be doing things. Right here, it reminds us. This is Paul talking to Timothy. I hope to come to you soon.
27:03 I hope to come to you soon, Timothy. I hope to see you before long but I am writing these things down to you so that if I delay, you may know how one ought to behave in the household of God. It's talking about how one ought to behave. Yeah, behavior. He's been talking about behavior, and so he's pointing back and saying, I hope to get there soon, and I could say all this stuff in person and be sure and I could even help you pick the leaders by who fits the bill.
27:31 But if I delay, I want you to
27:33 Speaker 2know it. I want you
27:34 Speaker 1have it written down so you can remember it. You know this stuff too, Timothy, right? So, that you may know how one ought to behave in the household of God. The household of God, he has an appositive right after this. It's which is the church of the living God.
27:50 So, Christ said, I will build my church. I'll call people out from every tribe, tongue, and nation. I'll bring them into this new thing called the church. The church triumphant. All believers, all of the redeemed, all ages, past, present, future.
28:08 I will build this church. The gates of hell won't stand against it. I am writing to you so that you may know how one ought to behave in the household of God which is the church of the living God. It is a pillar, a pillar, and buttress of the truth. Now, it is not the, doesn't say the pillar.
28:26 It's not just because we are a club and this is all there is and whatever we say goes goes. It is a pillar and a buttress for the truth. Now, the truth being God's word. What God says will stand will stand. Not a jot nor a tittle will ever pass from the word of God and that is the truth but we as the household of God or the church of the living God are a pillar and a buttress to that truth.
28:53 We hold up the truth. We hold it up and to the extent that we're true to the truth, we make an appeal to all of those who don't know God to know God, to come the only way that the scriptures point to. So, you've got the church and you've got God's word and you've got God's spirit that's very active and drawing people to God. A pillar and buttress of the truth.
29:17 Speaker 2So, you can look
29:18 Speaker 1at those things, those attributes or those lists or the way of living that he has described and think, well, I don't have to do that. Well, you don't. But if you don't live that way, then you're not being a pillar or a buttress of the truth. Does that make sense? If you tell somebody, Jesus love you, Jesus love you, Jesus love you, and cut them off in traffic.
29:39 What have you said? What I believe is not true. Because if Jesus loves you and I'm seeking to be like Jesus, I'm going to act like Jesus. All of our behavior is grounded in who our savior is. Does that make sense?
29:54 Or all of our behavior should be. If we're yielded to the spirit, it should be. So, this passage is about who we are. We are, I mean, just to think that Antioch was the first place that they call Christians Christians. Little Christ.
30:08 We are seeking to be like Christ, the church of the living. God is seeking to be. This is who we are. I read this many commentaries this week. There are stack of em about like this.
30:19 I I do every week. I try to stay do the homework, you know. And I read every one of these things has passages. And usually they have a pretty tight little pattern. It means this from here to here, you know.
30:30 This week, it was wider than usual. These three verses for some reason, people get bogged down in details and go weird places, I think. It happens, you know? I see a brother nodding nodding his head like, yeah, it does happen. I think it's about who we are.
30:48 Next, we will talk about this is what we do when we come up against heresy, when we come up against lies, when we come up against people who just reject sound doctrine and doctrine does matter but this is who we are and this is how we should behave. And then he goes right to this, great indeed, we confess, is the mystery of godliness. Now mystery does open it up. I shared mystery musterion last week that it is something that can be known, but it takes familiarity with the plot. Takes familiarity with the story to come up to the place of the revealing of the the mystery.
31:23 So great indeed, we confess and we all know we confess it together is the mystery of godliness. When he says that, do you feel like you know it all? No. Do you understand trinity? No.
31:38 Do you do you have a little succinct paragraph you'd like to stand up and talk about the problem of evil? No. We don't have it all figured out and so Paul's acknowledging that to Timothy, great indeed we confess is the mystery of godliness and then he goes immediately into a song. This is a hymn, first century hymn within thirty something years, thirty years after the resurrection of Christ, Paul sings this little ditty to Timothy. He was manifested in the flesh, vindicated by the spirit, seen by angels, proclaimed among the nations, believed on in the world, and taken up in glory.
32:14 Amen. I say amen because I agree with it. I I don't know structurally because Paul is quoting someone else right here. And so structurally, you know, I might pick this thing apart. But verb wise and grammar wise, this thing's all over the map.
32:30 Have you ever noticed in songs how the grammar in songs is just terrible? Most songs. They they it's just terrible. It's all over the place but it makes its point and it drives its point home. Sometimes with the music, sometimes with the lyrics, sometimes with repeating, refrains.
32:46 A refrain of a song is something you sing over and over, right? This is probably a refrain from a song. We don't know how much of the song we have. It might have been the seven eleven style where you got seven words that you say 11 times a piece. It might have been a longer song.
33:00 We don't know. But that's what we have. He was manifested in the flesh, vindicated by the spirit, seen by angels, proclaimed among the nations, believed on in the world, taken up in glory. So the commentaries go all over the map as to where this goes from here. The ESV, that's the version.
33:17 The chronological folks say, well, that makes perfect sense. He was manifested in flesh. He was born. Remember that? In a stable in Jerusalem, laid in a manger.
33:28 He was vindicated by the spirit. He's justified by the spirit or in the spirit. It's actually probably a better translation. Vindicated in the spirit, meaning, he yielded his life in the spirit. He yielded his life to the spirit.
33:42 He did not bow to the flesh. He had ample opportunity. He was tested and tried in every way that we're tested and tried yet he was without sin. So, was vindicated or justified by living a life that was in line with the Holy Spirit of God. There are some people that argue that shouldn't be spirit.
33:59 It's just, I mean, Holy Spirit, it can just be spirit. That's fine. If they argue that, he was still vindicated by his spirit. Seen by angels. Well, if he's manifested in the flesh as a baby, all his lifelong vindicated by the spirit, seen by angels.
34:20 Proclaimed among the nations, believed on in the world. Some people say the scene by angels is at the resurrection, right? At the resurrection, the angels are there present. Proclaimed among the nations is resurrection, believed on in the world, and taken up in glory. Amen.
34:37 That's good. Chronological kind of works. There are other people that say, well, it's alternating these two themes of earthly and heavenly and I see this one too. I can see the chronological. I can see the earthly or heavenly.
34:48 He was manifested in the flesh just like you're in the flesh right now. In the flesh, really. He's vindicated in the spirit though. Something that's not seen, it's spirit. He was seen by angels, heavenly angels but he was proclaimed in the real world.
35:07 The preaching of the gospel, the proclamation of Christ and he was believed on in the world and he was taken up in glory, heavenly, unseen. So, seen and unseen, earthly, heavenly. Do you see that one too? You can see that arrangement. Emphatic.
35:21 Oh, this one emphasizes the verbs. So the way that Greek works, the way the grammar works, I'm not gonna hit you with lots of terms today, but the way that it works, this screams out the verbs are in an emphatic position. So it is manifested, vindicated, seen, proclaimed, believed on, and taken up. It's like that. And that's a beautiful just to remember that much of this would be great.
35:48 That's our savior. Manifested, vindicated, seen, proclaimed, believed on, and taken up in glory. Seated at the right hand of the father. Right. Chiastic.
35:57 Oh yeah. No Greek scholar or Hebrew scholar for that matter would be happy. If we didn't find a chiastic construction in here somewhere. So, this sees he was manifested in the flesh, vindicated by the spirit, seen by angels, and it kind of takes a bit of work on this one because angel, Angalos, the word in Greek means angel like we think of angels but it also means messenger. Anyone who carries a message isn't an Angalos, an angel.
36:24 So, a divine message especially. So, seen by messengers and proclaimed by those messengers among the nations believed on in the world and taken up in glory. That's a good way of looking at it too, I think. So, I see what all their point is but when it comes down to it, it is a Christ centered song. That's it.
36:45 It's a Christ centered song. So, now, I'm going to give you the opportunity to share a Christ centered song or something that you just hang on to. I'll back up to that right there. Anybody? What a friend we have in Jesus.
37:04 All our sins and griefs to bear. What a privilege to carry everything to him in prayer. Anybody else? Holy, holy, holy. Santo, Santo, Santo in Spanish.
37:15 I've sung it so many times, so many times. Holy, holy, holy. Lord God almighty. God in three persons. Bless the trinity.
37:23 Yes, ma'am. I'm just a passing through. Amen. Hymn number three eleven in the church I grew up in. Yep.
37:31 Great is thy faithfulness. Wow. Sun, moon, and stars in their courses above. Join with all nature and manifold witness to thy great mercy, faithfulness, mercy, and love. Yeah.
37:44 Thou changes not thy compassions they fail not. As thou hast been, thou ever wilt be. Yes, sir. Wonderful the matchless grace of Jesus. For then the mighty rolling sea.
37:59 Yeah, that's such a beautiful song and so true, so good, so Christ centered, so edifying, and and when you are going through it, when you pass
38:09 Speaker 2through the waters, I will be with you. Isaiah four. And the waves, they will not overcome you. Do not fear. For I have redeemed you.
38:19 I have called you by name.
38:21 Speaker 1You are mine. Amen. So good. Anybody else? Dave, I know you got one.
38:26 Blessed assurance. Jesus is mine. Oh, what a foretaste of glory divine. It is well with my soul. That's a good one no matter what's going on.
38:36 There was a lady here in the first service who lost her son several years ago and I, she couldn't say it and I couldn't say it during that service but you give and take away. You give and take away. Yeah. Yeah. Profound.
38:52 Because he lives, I can face tomorrow. Amen. Ma'am. Ein Feisterberg. Yes.
39:01 A mighty fortress is our God. A bulwark never failing. Our helper, he amidst the flood of mortal ills prevailing. Yeah, so good. He lives, he lives, Christ Jesus lives today.
39:14 He walks with me and talks with me. That reminds me of my mother's favorite song. This in the first service, I said I didn't have a Mother's Day song and then it turned into, I mean, a Mother's Day sermon, really, but I did because my mama taught me almost all of these songs and her favorite song was her mother's favorite song and it
39:35 Speaker 2was in the garden. I come to the garden alone while the dew is still on the roses and the voice I hear falling on my ear the son of God is closes and he walks with me and he talks with me and he tells me I am his own and the joy we share as we tarry there none other ever
40:21 Speaker 1Now, think of my grandmother. Just singing that. It's linked together like that. I think these songs all day long. Oh for grace, my grandmother's name is Grace.
40:29 The end of the song,
40:30 Speaker 2it says, oh for grace.
40:35 Speaker 1Do you love him more? Amen. He touched me. Shackled by a heavy burden. Meet the load of guilt and shame.
40:43 Then the hand of Jesus touched me and now I am no longer the same. He touched me. What's that? His eyes on the sparrow and I know he watches me. Yep.
40:56 I'll fly away. Amen. We sang a lot of songs about heaven in the church I grew up in. Yeah. Some glad morning when this life is over.
41:04 I'll fly away. Amen. Like a bird from prison bars has flown. Yeah. So good.
41:10 Amazing grace. Amen. The fact that there is such a thing as grace is amazing. When we don't get that which we do deserve, the punishment that we do deserve. Amazing grace, how sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me.
41:24 That is a high Christology. It it lifts up Christ. It recognizes our human frailty. It recognizes our weakness and our need. He was manifested in the flesh.
41:35 Who we are depends on who he is. Does that make sense? If you are a Christian, who you are depends on who he is. That's where you find your identity. That is where your behavior will be driven by what you truly believe.
41:53 Anybody else have another? What's your mama's favorite song? How about that? In the garden was my, a lot of mama's like that. New life in Christ.
42:02 I don't know that one. Leaning on the everlasting arms. Fantastic. To God be the glory. Great things he had done.
42:16 So loved the world that he gave us his son. Holy faith. Yeah, exactly. God of our father. Victory in Jesus.
42:26 Yep. Know who holds my hand. Amen. What's that? Jesus paid it all, exactly.
42:39 See, we can do this because they're in there. They're in there. Go ahead. How great thou art. Yes.
42:49 How great thou art. That one around here, especially even during the prayer today, I thought about how beautiful this place is and immediately it takes us upward. You know, how great when lofty mountain grandeur. Yeah. Jesus loves even me.
43:04 Amen. Amen. Jesus loves me. From the cradle, we've been hearing these songs and they're true and we should use em. Now, I will go back one more slide I think.
43:17 I have quoted lyrics from the following musicians or groups since I've been here. I had the audacity four or five four years ago, think it was, to, on Mother's Day, actually use a Lynyrd Skynyrd song. Say it because I was closing the book of James and I said, James has been giving us all this good advice, motherly type advice. And then I sang the song Simple Man by Leonard S. Kennard.
43:43 I cannot believe it. Still can't believe I did it. I listened to it, the audio of it yesterday. I've quoted Led Zeppelin, Rush, Pink Floyd, the Eagles Fleetwood, Mac Bob Dylan, band, Beatles, George Harrison, Stevie Ray Vaughan. I did not always tell you who I was quoting, but neither does Paul.
43:57 Paul quotes this. He quotes pagan philosophers several times. Actually one time in Acts 17. I didn't just stick with rock and roll and boogie woogie there, but it went on to George Strait, Roy Rogers, Allen Jackson, Merle Haggard, Merle Haggard. Mama tried to raise me right but I refused.
44:16 Turned 21 in prison by the way. Anyway, Don Don Williams, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Chris Christopherson. I have sung and backed up Doyle for singing, why me, lord? Right? Why me, lord?
44:28 What have I ever done? To deserve even one of these blessings that you give. Hank Williams Senior Junior, Blyde Willie McTell. I didn't mention that one when I quoted Old Blue song. BB King, Huddy Ledbetter, Woody Guthrie, T Bone Burnett, Carole King, James Taylor, James Brown.
44:44 I feel good. I really do. I love it. Dave Mason. Dave Mason comes up a lot.
44:51 It comes up more in the counseling room because that's the guy that's saying,
44:54 Speaker 2there ain't no good guys, there ain't no bad guys, there's only you and
44:57 Speaker 1me and we just disagree. Comes up in marriage counseling a lot. So Peaches and Herb though has reunited and it feels so good. So that one, hopefully, George Clinton, the Reverend Al Green. I love Al Green.
45:12 Ira Sankey, Fanny Crosby, Charles Wesley, John Wesley, Martin Luther, one of the one of the ones, the mighty fortress is our God. John Wesley, Mosley Lister, the Gaither Vocal Band. He touched me. Patsy Cline, the Allman Brothers, the Doobie Brothers. I think of the Doobie Brothers quite a bit if Jesus is just alright.
45:33 If Jesus is just alright, keep on coming. Dig deeper. If he's just alright because he's great. He's amazing. He's wonderful and he needs to be lifted up.
45:45 I mean, yeah, he is he's your friend. Jesus, he's my friend. It's that's fine but keep on going. I also quoted magic in the first service. It was a pop song.
45:56 It didn't go so well. I'm saying that songs stick with us and people, you, they can be kind of with you and then you say, like this song and they go, yeah, exactly. So, Paul points to this, Jesus Christ was manifested in the flesh. He lived in the flesh. He was tempted in all the ways just as we're tempted.
46:17 Yet, he was without sin. He was vindicated by the spirit or in the spirit. Seen by angels, both heavenly angels and messengers on earth. His disciples became those sent out ones that carried his message and we are here today because they were following after their savior. He was proclaimed, preached among the nations, all the nations.
46:39 To think about for a Jewish guy to be writing this or to be reading this or be singing this, for him to think, angels, heavenly beings, oh, how exalted in the very next phrase to be proclaimed among the Gentiles. That's what nations is, Gentile. The dogs, the lowest of the low, from angels to Gentiles and he was believed on in this world, in this life. There's a time and there is a time coming that there will be a judgment and we have time right here, right now in this reality. About what's going to be for us.
47:14 Whether we will be taken up in glory or left behind. He's manifested in the flesh, vindicated by the spirit, seen by angels proclaimed among the nation, believed on in the world. Do you have another one? If you were sitting back there and just wishing you could but somebody spoke over you, please share. No one ever cared for me like Jesus.
47:32 Amen. Amen. Anybody else? Oh, we sang a version of the Psalm 23 this morning that reminded me of how reverent and beautiful the Lord's prayer is. Yeah.
47:45 Just wonderful. Anybody else? Yes, sir. Glorious things of they are spoken. Fantastic.
47:56 I don't know that one But it's it's beautiful. Yeah. I mean, I do know the title of it, but I've skipped over that one. It sounds majestic. Glorious things of thee are spoken.
48:05 Amen. Anybody else? Alright. So we're gonna sing another one. And this one is something that if we just sing it like I were just singing it, we're not paying attention to it.
48:19 It's easy to just do that sometimes. I wanted you to, I wanted to stop today and say, what are the things you hang on to? Where he leads me, I will follow. Think about what that means. I mean, we're leaving right now.
48:28 This is the last thing in this service, right? I know it's ten to twelve but we're leaving. This is the next thing that's going to happen and you're singing before you go out affirming it. Great is the mystery. We confess it all together that where he leads me, I will follow.
48:41 So, let's do that. When we go this week, we want to be in touch with and in contact with the spirit of God and be yielded to it. When he says, speak, we speak. When he says, be quiet, be quiet, alright? Where he leads me, I will follow.
48:55 Would you stand with me? We're going to send him number 593.
49:10 Speaker 2I can hear my savior calling I can hear my savior calling I can hear my savior calling take thy cross and follow me Where he leads me, I will follow. Where he leads me, I will follow. Where he leads me, I will follow. I'll go with him with him all the way I'll go with him through the judgment I'll go with him through the judgment I'll go with him through the judgment I'll go with him with him all the way where he leads me I will follow where he leads me I will follow where he leads me, I will follow I'll go with him, with him all the way he will give me grace and glory he will give me grace and glory he will give me grace and glory I'll go with me with me all the way where he leads me I will follow Where he leads me, I will follow. Where he leads me, I will follow.
51:24 I'll go with him, with him,
51:32 Speaker 1Amen. And now, this New Living Translation of this verse from Luke 12. Seek the kingdom of God above all else and he will give you everything you need. That's the seek you first the kingdom of God.
51:46 Speaker 2Would you join me? And his righteousness and all these things shall be added unto you.
52:06 Speaker 1In Jesus name, would you go and bless this week? Amen.
