The Word of God Is Not Imprisoned

A study guide · January 20, 2019 · 2 Timothy

Watch or read it

In one paragraph

This sermon worked through 2 Timothy 2:1-13, following the line of encouragement Paul gives Timothy as he sits in prison. The thread running through the whole message was that genuine Christian life involves suffering, discipline, and endurance, and that the gospel of grace is what makes all of it possible and worthwhile. the pastor backed up to the beginning of 2 Timothy 2 before moving forward,...

Talk about it

  1. Pastor Jonathan talked about how the gospel is something we receive and then pour out into others, not just hold onto for ourselves. Where in your own life have you seen that kind of passing-on happen, either toward you or through you?
  2. The three similes Paul uses are the soldier, the athlete, and the farmer, and each one involves discipline and some form of suffering. Which of those three pictures connects most honestly with where you are in your faith right now, and why?
  3. Pastor Jonathan pointed out that Paul was in prison when he wrote this letter, and that renouncing Christ would have freed him, yet he refused. When has following Christ cost you something, and what kept you from walking away?
  4. The five trustworthy sayings together were described as a remarkably balanced summary of the gospel and its practical implications. Of the ones covered in the sermon, which one landed on you most, and what does it settle or challenge in how you think about your own salvation?
  5. At the end of the sermon, a woman said she felt ill-equipped to minister to someone who had come to faith through a hard season of life. Pastor Jonathan said he feels that every Sunday, and pointed to James on asking God for wisdom. Where do you feel ill-equipped right now, and what would it look like to actually ask God for wisdom in that specific place?
