Tough guys and drama queens Day 1

A study guide · November 24, 2015

Watch or read it

In one paragraph

This was the first session of a weekend parenting seminar at First Baptist Jackson. The preacher, who runs a residential program for struggling teens in Texas called Heartlight, drew on more than two decades of working with around 3,000 young people to argue that the parenting approaches that work well in a child's early years often become the very things that push teenagers away. The evening was...

Read together

  1. Proverbs 22:6 contrasting 'teach' with 'train' a child in the way it should go
  2. Ephesians 6:4 fathers, do not provoke your children to wrath
  3. Proverbs 27:17 as iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another, used to argue against isolation
  4. Luke 15:11-32 prodigal son story used to illustrate overresponsible parents and the line 'everyone quit giving him everything' before he came to his senses

Talk about it

  1. The preacher described a shift from seeing struggling kids as rebellious to seeing them as lost, and said that distinction changes how he responds to them. How does that same distinction show up in your own relationships with the young people in your life?
  2. The preacher drew a line between information and wisdom, saying kids are not looking for more facts but for principles of right living that they can see applied. Where have you seen that difference play out in conversations with your own children or grandchildren?
  3. The preacher talked about the stages of pleasing, protecting, and providing for kids, and said parents often never make the move toward preparing them for the world ahead. What would it look like in your home to make that shift, and what would have to change first?
  4. The preacher said that overresponsible parents tend to create irresponsible kids, and pointed to the prodigal son story as evidence that this problem is not new. Where do you find it hardest to pull back and let your kids face the natural weight of their own choices?
  5. The preacher argued that a discipline problem is really a relationship problem, and that kids will follow wherever a genuine relationship exists, regardless of whether that relationship is healthy. What does that say about where your energy as a parent or grandparent most needs to go right now?
