The passage this message was preached from, in full, with every other passage it reached for.

  • Numbers 22 Read aloud in full as the primary background text for understanding Balaam

1 The children of Israel traveled, and encamped in the plains of Moab beyond the Jordan at Jericho.

2 Balak the son of Zippor saw all that Israel had done to the Amorites.

3 Moab was very afraid of the people, because they were many. Moab was distressed because of the children of Israel.

4 Moab said to the elders of Midian, “Now this multitude will lick up all that is around us, as the ox licks up the grass of the field.” Balak the son of Zippor was king of Moab at that time.

5 He sent messengers to Balaam the son of Beor, to Pethor, which is by the River, to the land of the children of his people, to call him, saying, “Behold, there is a people who came out of Egypt. Behold, they cover the surface of the earth, and they are staying opposite me.

6 Please come now therefore curse me this people; for they are too mighty for me. Perhaps I shall prevail, that we may strike them, and that I may drive them out of the land; for I know that he whom you bless is blessed, and he whom you curse is cursed.”

7 The elders of Moab and the elders of Midian departed with the rewards of divination in their hand. They came to Balaam, and spoke to him the words of Balak.

8 He said to them, “Lodge here this night, and I will bring you word again, as Yahweh shall speak to me.” The princes of Moab stayed with Balaam.

9 God came to Balaam, and said, “Who are these men with you?”

10 Balaam said to God, “Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab, has said to me,

11 ‘Behold, the people that has come out of Egypt covers the surface of the earth. Now, come curse me them. Perhaps I shall be able to fight against them, and shall drive them out.’”

12 God said to Balaam, “You shall not go with them. You shall not curse the people; for they are blessed.”

13 Balaam rose up in the morning, and said to the princes of Balak, “Go to your land; for Yahweh refuses to permit me to go with you.”

14 The princes of Moab rose up, and they went to Balak, and said, “Balaam refuses to come with us.”

15 Balak again sent princes, more, and more honorable than they.

16 They came to Balaam, and said to him, “Thus says Balak the son of Zippor, ‘Please let nothing hinder you from coming to me,

17 for I will promote you to very great honor, and whatever you say to me I will do. Please come therefore, and curse this people for me.’”

18 Balaam answered the servants of Balak, “If Balak would give me his house full of silver and gold, I can’t go beyond the word of Yahweh my God, to do less or more.

19 Now therefore please stay here tonight as well, that I may know what else Yahweh will speak to me.”

20 God came to Balaam at night, and said to him, “If the men have come to call you, rise up, go with them; but only the word which I speak to you, that you shall do.”

21 Balaam rose up in the morning, and saddled his donkey, and went with the princes of Moab.

22 God’s anger burned because he went; and Yahweh’s angel placed himself in the way for an adversary against him. Now he was riding on his donkey, and his two servants were with him.

23 The donkey saw Yahweh’s angel standing in the way, with his sword drawn in his hand; and the donkey turned out of the path, and went into the field. Balaam struck the donkey, to turn her into the path.

24 Then Yahweh’s angel stood in a narrow path between the vineyards, a wall being on this side, and a wall on that side.

25 The donkey saw Yahweh’s angel, and she thrust herself to the wall, and crushed Balaam’s foot against the wall. He struck her again.

26 Yahweh’s angel went further, and stood in a narrow place, where there was no way to turn either to the right hand or to the left.

27 The donkey saw Yahweh’s angel, and she lay down under Balaam. Balaam’s anger burned, and he struck the donkey with his staff.

28 Yahweh opened the mouth of the donkey, and she said to Balaam, “What have I done to you, that you have struck me these three times?”

29 Balaam said to the donkey, “Because you have mocked me, I wish there were a sword in my hand, for now I would have killed you.”

30 The donkey said to Balaam, “Am I not your donkey, on which you have ridden all your life long until today? Was I ever in the habit of doing so to you?” He said, “No.”

31 Then Yahweh opened the eyes of Balaam, and he saw Yahweh’s angel standing in the way, with his sword drawn in his hand; and he bowed his head, and fell on his face.

32 Yahweh’s angel said to him, “Why have you struck your donkey these three times? Behold, I have come out as an adversary, because your way is perverse before me.

33 The donkey saw me, and turned away before me these three times. Unless she had turned away from me, surely now I would have killed you, and saved her alive.”

34 Balaam said to Yahweh’s angel, “I have sinned; for I didn’t know that you stood in the way against me. Now therefore, if it displeases you, I will go back again.”

35 Yahweh’s angel said to Balaam, “Go with the men; but only the word that I shall speak to you, that you shall speak.” So Balaam went with the princes of Balak.

36 When Balak heard that Balaam had come, he went out to meet him to the City of Moab, which is on the border of the Arnon, which is in the utmost part of the border.

37 Balak said to Balaam, “Didn’t I earnestly send for you to summon you? Why didn’t you come to me? Am I not able indeed to promote you to honor?”

38 Balaam said to Balak, “Behold, I have come to you. Have I now any power at all to speak anything? The word that God puts in my mouth, that shall I speak.”

39 Balaam went with Balak, and they came to Kiriath Huzoth.

40 Balak sacrificed cattle and sheep, and sent to Balaam, and to the princes who were with him.

41 In the morning, Balak took Balaam, and brought him up into the high places of Baal; and he saw from there part of the people.

Numbers 23

Summarized: Balaam blesses Israel three times despite Balak's repeated requests to curse them

1 Balaam said to Balak, “Build here seven altars for me, and prepare here seven bulls and seven rams for me.”

2 Balak did as Balaam had spoken; and Balak and Balaam offered on every altar a bull and a ram.

3 Balaam said to Balak, “Stand by your burnt offering, and I will go. Perhaps Yahweh will come to meet me. Whatever he shows me I will tell you.” He went to a bare height.

4 God met Balaam, and he said to him, “I have prepared the seven altars, and I have offered up a bull and a ram on every altar.”

5 Yahweh put a word in Balaam’s mouth, and said, “Return to Balak, and thus you shall speak.”

6 He returned to him, and behold, he was standing by his burnt offering, he, and all the princes of Moab.

7 He took up his parable, and said, “From Aram has Balak brought me, the king of Moab from the mountains of the East. Come, curse Jacob for me. Come, defy Israel.

8 How shall I curse whom God has not cursed? How shall I defy whom Yahweh has not defied?

9 For from the top of the rocks I see him. From the hills I see him. Behold, it is a people that dwells alone, and shall not be listed among the nations.

10 Who can count the dust of Jacob, or count the fourth part of Israel? Let me die the death of the righteous! Let my last end be like his!”

11 Balak said to Balaam, “What have you done to me? I took you to curse my enemies, and behold, you have blessed them altogether.”

12 He answered and said, “Must I not take heed to speak that which Yahweh puts in my mouth?”

13 Balak said to him, “Please come with me to another place, where you may see them. You shall see just part of them, and shall not see them all. Curse them from there for me.”

14 He took him into the field of Zophim, to the top of Pisgah, and built seven altars, and offered up a bull and a ram on every altar.

15 He said to Balak, “Stand here by your burnt offering, while I meet God over there.”

16 Yahweh met Balaam, and put a word in his mouth, and said, “Return to Balak, and say this.”

17 He came to him, and behold, he was standing by his burnt offering, and the princes of Moab with him. Balak said to him, “What has Yahweh spoken?”

18 He took up his parable, and said, “Rise up, Balak, and hear! Listen to me, you son of Zippor.

19 God is not a man, that he should lie, nor a son of man, that he should repent. Has he said, and will he not do it? Or has he spoken, and will he not make it good?

20 Behold, I have received a command to bless. He has blessed, and I can’t reverse it.

21 He has not seen iniquity in Jacob. Neither has he seen perverseness in Israel. Yahweh his God is with him. The shout of a king is among them.

22 God brings them out of Egypt. He has as it were the strength of the wild ox.

23 Surely there is no enchantment with Jacob; Neither is there any divination with Israel. Now it shall be said of Jacob and of Israel, ‘What has God done!’

24 Behold, the people rises up as a lioness. As a lion he lifts himself up. He shall not lie down until he eats of the prey, and drinks the blood of the slain.”

25 Balak said to Balaam, “Neither curse them at all, nor bless them at all.”

26 But Balaam answered Balak, “Didn’t I tell you, saying, ‘All that Yahweh speaks, that I must do?’”

27 Balak said to Balaam, “Come now, I will take you to another place; perhaps it will please God that you may curse them for me from there.”

28 Balak took Balaam to the top of Peor, that looks down on the desert.

29 Balaam said to Balak, “Build seven altars for me here, and prepare seven bulls and seven rams for me here.”

30 Balak did as Balaam had said, and offered up a bull and a ram on every altar.

Numbers 24

Summarized: Balaam prophesies further blessings on Israel and a coming Messiah from Jacob

1 When Balaam saw that it pleased Yahweh to bless Israel, he didn’t go, as at the other times, to meet with enchantments, but he set his face toward the wilderness.

2 Balaam lifted up his eyes, and he saw Israel dwelling according to their tribes; and the Spirit of God came on him.

3 He took up his parable, and said, “Balaam the son of Beor says, the man whose eyes are open says;

4 he says, who hears the words of God, who sees the vision of the Almighty, falling down, and having his eyes open:

5 How goodly are your tents, Jacob, and your tents, Israel!

6 As valleys they are spread out, as gardens by the riverside, as aloes which Yahweh has planted, as cedar trees beside the waters.

7 Water shall flow from his buckets. His seed shall be in many waters. His king shall be higher than Agag. His kingdom shall be exalted.

8 God brings him out of Egypt. He has as it were the strength of the wild ox. He shall eat up the nations his adversaries, shall break their bones in pieces, and pierce them with his arrows.

9 He couched, he lay down as a lion, as a lioness; who shall rouse him up? Everyone who blesses you is blessed. Everyone who curses you is cursed.”

10 Balak’s anger burned against Balaam, and he struck his hands together. Balak said to Balaam, “I called you to curse my enemies, and, behold, you have altogether blessed them these three times.

11 Therefore, flee to your place, now! I thought to promote you to great honor; but, behold, Yahweh has kept you back from honor.”

12 Balaam said to Balak, “Didn’t I also tell your messengers whom you sent to me, saying,

13 ‘If Balak would give me his house full of silver and gold, I can’t go beyond Yahweh’s word, to do either good or bad from my own mind. I will say what Yahweh says’?

14 Now, behold, I go to my people. Come, I will inform you what this people shall do to your people in the latter days.”

15 He took up his parable, and said, “Balaam the son of Beor says, the man whose eyes are open says;

16 he says, who hears the words of God, knows the knowledge of the Most High, and who sees the vision of the Almighty, Falling down, and having his eyes open:

17 I see him, but not now. I see him, but not near. A star will come out of Jacob. A scepter will rise out of Israel, and shall strike through the corners of Moab, and break down all the sons of Sheth.

18 Edom shall be a possession. Seir, his enemies, also shall be a possession, while Israel does valiantly.

19 Out of Jacob shall one have dominion, and shall destroy the remnant from the city.”

20 He looked at Amalek, and took up his parable, and said, “Amalek was the first of the nations, But his latter end shall come to destruction.”

21 He looked at the Kenite, and took up his parable, and said, “Your dwelling place is strong. Your nest is set in the rock.

22 Nevertheless Kain shall be wasted, until Asshur carries you away captive.”

23 He took up his parable, and said, “Alas, who shall live when God does this?

24 But ships shall come from the coast of Kittim. They shall afflict Asshur, and shall afflict Eber. He also shall come to destruction.”

25 Balaam rose up, and went and returned to his place; and Balak also went his way.

Numbers 25:1-9

Summarized: Israel falls into sexual immorality with Moabite women, described as the aftermath of Balaam's counsel

1 Israel stayed in Shittim; and the people began to play the prostitute with the daughters of Moab;

2 for they called the people to the sacrifices of their gods. The people ate and bowed down to their gods.

3 Israel joined himself to Baal Peor. Yahweh’s anger burned against Israel.

4 Yahweh said to Moses, “Take all the chiefs of the people, and hang them up to Yahweh before the sun, that the fierce anger of Yahweh may turn away from Israel.”

5 Moses said to the judges of Israel, “Everyone kill his men who have joined themselves to Baal Peor.”

6 Behold, one of the children of Israel came and brought to his brothers a Midianite woman in the sight of Moses, and in the sight of all the congregation of the children of Israel, while they were weeping at the door of the Tent of Meeting.

7 When Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, saw it, he rose up from the middle of the congregation, and took a spear in his hand.

8 He went after the man of Israel into the pavilion, and thrust both of them through, the man of Israel, and the woman through her body. So the plague was stayed from the children of Israel.

9 Those who died by the plague were twenty-four thousand.

Genesis 12

Referenced to explain God's promise to Abraham that whoever blesses his people will be blessed and whoever curses them will be cursed

1 Now Yahweh said to Abram, “Leave your country, and your relatives, and your father’s house, and go to the land that I will show you.

2 I will make of you a great nation. I will bless you and make your name great. You will be a blessing.

3 I will bless those who bless you, and I will curse him who treates you with contempt. All the families of the earth will be blessed through you.”

4 So Abram went, as Yahweh had told him. Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he departed from Haran.

5 Abram took Sarai his wife, Lot his brother’s son, all their possessions that they had gathered, and the people whom they had acquired in Haran, and they went to go into the land of Canaan. They entered into the land of Canaan.

6 Abram passed through the land to the place of Shechem, to the oak of Moreh. At that time, Canaanites were in the land.

7 Yahweh appeared to Abram and said, “I will give this land to your offspring.” He built an altar there to Yahweh, who had appeared to him.

8 He left from there to go to the mountain on the east of Bethel and pitched his tent, having Bethel on the west, and Ai on the east. There he built an altar to Yahweh and called on Yahweh’s name.

9 Abram traveled, still going on toward the South.

10 There was a famine in the land. Abram went down into Egypt to live as a foreigner there, for the famine was severe in the land.

11 When he had come near to enter Egypt, he said to Sarai his wife, “See now, I know that you are a beautiful woman to look at.

12 It will happen, when the Egyptians see you, that they will say, ‘This is his wife.’ They will kill me, but they will save you alive.

13 Please say that you are my sister, that it may be well with me for your sake, and that my soul may live because of you.”

14 When Abram had come into Egypt, Egyptians saw that the woman was very beautiful.

15 The princes of Pharaoh saw her, and praised her to Pharaoh; and the woman was taken into Pharaoh’s house.

16 He dealt well with Abram for her sake. He had sheep, cattle, male donkeys, male servants, female servants, female donkeys, and camels.

17 Yahweh afflicted Pharaoh and his house with great plagues because of Sarai, Abram’s wife.

18 Pharaoh called Abram and said, “What is this that you have done to me? Why didn’t you tell me that she was your wife?

19 Why did you say, ‘She is my sister,’ so that I took her to be my wife? Now therefore, see your wife, take her, and go your way.”

20 Pharaoh commanded men concerning him, and they escorted him away with his wife and all that he had.

2 Peter 2:10-3:2

Named as the current series passage, with Balaam cited as Peter's example of greed and immorality

10 but chiefly those who walk after the flesh in the lust of defilement, and despise authority. Daring, self-willed, they are not afraid to speak evil of dignitaries;

11 whereas angels, though greater in might and power, don’t bring a railing judgment against them before the Lord.

12 But these, as unreasoning creatures, born natural animals to be taken and destroyed, speaking evil in matters about which they are ignorant, will in their destroying surely be destroyed,

13 receiving the wages of unrighteousness; people who count it pleasure to revel in the daytime, spots and defects, reveling in their deceit while they feast with you;

14 having eyes full of adultery, and who can’t cease from sin; enticing unsettled souls; having a heart trained in greed; children of cursing;

15 forsaking the right way, they went astray, having followed the way of Balaam the son of Beor, who loved the wages of wrongdoing;

16 but he was rebuked for his own disobedience. A mute donkey spoke with a man’s voice and stopped the madness of the prophet.

17 These are wells without water, clouds driven by a storm; for whom the blackness of darkness has been reserved forever.

18 For, uttering great swelling words of emptiness, they entice in the lusts of the flesh, by licentiousness, those who are indeed escaping from those who live in error;

19 promising them liberty, while they themselves are bondservants of corruption; for a man is brought into bondage by whoever overcomes him.

20 For if, after they have escaped the defilement of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in it and overcome, the last state has become worse for them than the first.

21 For it would be better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than, after knowing it, to turn back from the holy commandment delivered to them.

22 But it has happened to them according to the true proverb, “The dog turns to his own vomit again,” and “the sow that has washed to wallowing in the mire.”

1 This is now, beloved, the second letter that I have written to you; and in both of them I stir up your sincere mind by reminding you;

2 that you should remember the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and the commandment of us, the apostles of the Lord and Savior:

Recap

The message in order, in a few minutes of reading.

This message, preached by the pastor, was part of the ongoing series through 2 Peter. Before arriving at the passage in 2 Peter, he spent the full sermon walking through the story of Balaam in Numbers 22 through 25 so the congregation would understand who Peter is referencing and why. The story of Balaam, he said, is necessary background for making sense of Peter's warning about false teachers driven by greed.

What was said

the pastor set up the context in 2 Peter: Peter is addressing false teachers who entice others into a greedy and licentious way of life. The example Peter reaches for is Balaam, a man whose name carried a reputation across hundreds of miles as someone whose blessings blessed and whose curses cursed. To understand why Peter uses him, you first have to understand what Numbers 22 through 25 actually says.

The story opens with Balak, king of Moab, watching the Israelites camp near his territory after defeating the Amorites. Terrified, he sends officials with payment to bring Balaam from the Euphrates River to curse Israel. God's word to Balaam on that first night was plain and direct: do not go with them, you must not curse these people, because they are blessed. Balaam sent the officials away.

When Balak sent a second, more powerful delegation with a bigger reward, Balaam went back to ask God again rather than holding to the answer already given. God, the pastor noted, let him go, but with a warning: you will only say what I tell you to say. That permission was not approval. Psalm 106:15 came up here, the observation that God can give people what they keep pressing for while sending leanness into their souls alongside it.

The famous episode with the donkey was read in full. The donkey could see the angel of the Lord standing in the road with a drawn sword; Balaam, the professional seer, could not. Three times the donkey turned away or stopped, and three times Balaam beat it. When God opened the donkey's mouth and it spoke, Balaam answered it without apparent alarm. Then God opened Balaam's eyes, he saw the angel, and he fell on his face. The point the pastor drew out was that the man with the reputation for supernatural sight had to be shown the obvious by his own animal. The donkey made a fool of him.

Even after that, Balaam traveled to Balak and went through the ritual three times, building seven altars each time. Each time, what came out of his mouth was a blessing on Israel, not a curse. By the fourth oracle, the Spirit of God had come upon him and he was prophesying about the Messiah, a star coming out of Jacob, whether he wanted to or not. Balak dismissed him without payment. On the surface, you could almost feel sorry for Balaam. But Numbers 25 and later texts in Revelation make clear that Balaam went back afterward and taught Balak exactly how to get to God's people: not through divination or curses, which cannot touch those God has blessed, but through tempting them into sexual immorality and idolatry. Twenty-four thousand Israelites died in the aftermath.

The pastor closed by saying the sermon would carry into the 2 Peter text next week, but the point was already visible. Balaam heard God say no, went back to ask again, received a conditional permission, and still found a way to pursue what he originally wanted. The contrast he offered for the congregation was 1 John 1:9: confession brings forgiveness and cleansing. Balaam did not repent. That door, the pastor said, remains open for anyone carrying something they know God has said no to.

Doing a Bible study?

Here is a guide we have prepared for you: the passages in order, questions for the group, and room to write.

  1. The pastor said that everything Balaam said in the early part of the story 'sounds good and right,' yet his heart was pulling him toward the money all along. Have you ever seen someone, or yourself, say all the right things while quietly moving toward something God had already said no to?
  2. God told Balaam clearly, 'Do not go with them,' but when Balaam kept asking, God said 'Go ahead and go.' The sermon pointed to Psalm 106:15, that God sometimes gives people what they want but sends leanness into their souls. What do you think it looks like in a person's life when God allows them to have what He warned them away from?

27:13 Speaker 1So, it's time for children's church downstairs There they go Amen. Amen. How are y'all this morning? Good. I am excited this morning.
27:33 There's there are couple of things, couple of stories that are going on. This is first Peter 10, I mean, first Peter two ten B through three two. That section is some of the toughest in this the Bible to preach. He references somebody Bala He references him a time or two. He he references him once but there's a couple of other places in the Bible that he does.
27:56 I asked somebody this morning. He said, I read ahead in the text Like that and I said, what what did it sound like to you? He said, Peter is throwing shade left and right So, I'm going to try for this not to be a down alright? But it is a warning. I'll say this to y'all this way because primarily who he's dealing with this is false teachers, those who would entice others into a licentious and greedy lifestyle.
28:27 Okay? So that's what he's mainly talking about, the enticers, not the enticed. Although, there's a good word in there for those of us being enticed and I hope that it'll come out. So, second Peter two ten B, I'm probably not going to make it to three two but there's a little light in three one and two. So, I went that far just for that Bala Bala his story now, a while back, we did numbers 20 where Moses struck the rock.
28:55 Y'all remember that before we went to Israel That was something that I was thinking about and so I did a couple of Old Testament sermons in between two New Te books. We did numbers 20 and that's Moses striking the rock and then we did number one Moses lifting up the serpent in the wilderness. Do you remember that one? Well, just so happens that numbers 22 through 25 and I'm talking chapters not just verses here, okay? These are all about Bala and so I'm going to read the first chapter to you to let you get into the story.
29:22 I'm going to summarize the rest, alright? I'll try not to slow it down too much through here. So, numbers 22 starts off this way. I feel like you'll understand today's sermon better if you understand who Balam is and what was going on. Then, the Israelites traveled to the Plains Of Moab.
29:38 This is approaching the time that they are going to be entering into the promised land. It's near the end of their forty years of wandering. Then, the Israelites traveled to the Plains Of Moab and camped along the Jordan across from Jericho. Now, Balak, son of Zippor, I am just going to pronounce these the way I pronounce them. I'm not a Hebrew scholar, alright?
29:58 Now, Balak, son of Zippor, saw all that Israel had done to the Amorites, they whipped them, alright? And Moab was terrified because there were so many people. Indeed, Moab was filled with dread because of the Israelites. They're worried. You get that.
30:18 The Moabites said to the elders of Mideon, so Moabites and Midianites are different people but they're in collusion here. The Moabites said to the elders of Mideon, this hoard of people is going to lick up everything around us as an ox licks up the grass of the field. They are taxing our very strained desert resources here, alright? So, Balak, son of Zippor, who was the king of Moab at the time, sent messengers to summon Balam, son of Baor, who was at Pethor, near the Euphrates River. That's a long way away actually.
30:52 As far as depending on where he was on the Euphrates, 350 miles away. It's pretty good ride to send officials, you know. He was at Pethor near the Euphrates River in his native land and Balak said, a people has come out of Egypt. Remember the slaves in Egypt? God raises up the deliverer.
31:10 Moses takes his people out. Pharaoh chases them, gets killed in the Red Sea. They whip other people along the way as God is leading them out of slavery. A people has come out of Egypt. They cover the face of the land and they have settled next to me.
31:23 Not my backyard, right? Now, come and put a curse on these people. He's sending Balak is sending Balam to messengers and they went to him and said, now, come and put a curse on these people because they are too powerful for me. Perhaps, then, I will be able to defeat them after you've cursed them and drive them out of the land for I know that whatever whoever you bless, Balam, son of Baor, I know that whoever you bless is blessed and whoever you curse is cursed. So, Bala has a reputation that has drawn people to him because he has a reputation of when he blesses, people are blessed and when he curses, people are cursed.
32:08 Are you with me? So far. Alright. And the elders of Moab and Mideon, their buddies, including elders of Moab, Mideon taken with them the fee for divination. Oh, here's what we're talking about here.
32:21 They're bringing with them a thief. Divination is using some sort of sorcery to contact other worldly powers to be able to tell the future or be able to change the future, to be able to curse your enemies or bless your friends. It's using the power of words. Are you with me? Or fee?
32:43 The elders of Moab, Midian left, taking with them the fee for divination. They knew his price and they took it with them. When they came to Bala they told him what Balak had said. Spend the night here Balam said to them and I will report back to you the answer that the Lord gives me. If you analyze this, everything that he says sounds right Everything that Bala says in the lead up here sounds good and right Take that into account.
33:11 You hear a lot of guys that what you hear him say sounds good and right. Okay Spend the night here, Balam said and I will report back to you with the answer the Lord gives me So, the Moabite officials stayed with him. God came to Balam and asked, who are these men with you? God knows who the men are, right? Balam said to God, Balak, son of Zippor, king of Moab, sent me this message of people that has come out of Egypt, covers the face of the land.
33:35 Now, come and put a curse on them for me. Perhaps then, I will be able to fight them and drive them away but God said to Balam and this is in no uncertain terms. Get this, verse 12, but God said to Balam, do not go with them. Are you with me? They should not have been with him, right?
33:54 He should not have gone with them. Do not go with them. You must not. Absolutely must not. Put a curse on those people because they are blessed.
34:03 I've blessed these people. You know, God had given a promise to Abraham in chapter 12 of Genesis and he said, Abraham, whoever you bless, I'll bless and whoever you curse, I'll curse and somehow, Balam gets the reputation for that. A few years later, right? And so, he's gotten to be a rich and powerful, wealthy man. We know this from other place in scripture You must not put a curse on those people.
34:26 You must not. Do not go with them because they are blessed. Indeed, they're my people and they're blessed So, the Moabite officials returned to Balak and said, Bala refused to come with us. We're back. He didn't go with them the time and then Balak sent other officials More numerous and more distinguished than the first.
34:45 So, if he had sent mid level management, he's now sending the big guns and more of em More persuasive people, more powerful people in his government or his land. Balak sent other officials more numerous and more distinguished than the first and they came to Balam and they said, this is what Balak, son of Zippor says, do not let anything keep you from coming to me. Don't let anything slow you down because I will reward you handsomely. This is what it's about. Fee for divination could have been just a negotiating tactic for him to turn away but it does say that God met with him and said, do not go with these people, okay?
35:26 More important, guys come with a bigger purse. I will reward you handsomely and I will also do whatever you say. You're not going to tell me what to do and let me not do it. Whatever you say that I'll do, I'll do. Come and put a curse on these people for me.
35:43 There's no doubt about what he wants him to come there to do, right? Come put a curse on these people for me and that but Bala answered them, even if Balak gave me all of the silver and the gold in his palace, I could not do anything so great or so small to go beyond the command of the Lord, my God. Now, he's claiming that the Lord is his God. He's claiming that right there. Now, spend the night here so that I can find out what else the Lord will tell me.
36:15 What did the Lord already tell him? Do not go with them In no uncertain terms, it's amplified and then he said, you must not curse these people. He sends back more people. He says, come, put a curse on the people. Now, I'm going ask God again.
36:32 How how do you think that's going to go That night, God came to Bala and he says, well, since they've come back to summon you, you're coming back to consult with me again Go ahead and go. I think that's the way he said it. Go ahead and go. Yeah. Go ahead and go.
36:52 Go ahead. Go with them. You're coming back to ask. Go ahead. Go with them.
36:57 But you're only going to do what I tell you to do. Beware. Are you with me? This is a good story. So Balam, this is actually Rembrandt.
37:08 It doesn't look like Rembrandt. Looks like a coloring book page to me but this is from 1602. This is the part of the story most of us know about Balam. If I had asked 90% of you, so what do know about Balam? I said, he had a donkey Balam got up in the morning.
37:24 He saddled up his donkey and he went with the Moabite officials. Now, what did verse 12 say? Do not go with them Go ahead and go. Since they came all this way, second time now, you coming back to ask again because they promised you the riches of the kingdom. They're going to do whatever you say.
37:44 Yeah, go ahead and go with them but I'm going to speak through you Warning you can only say and do what I tell you. So, Baal got up in the morning. He saddled his donkey, went out with the Moabite officials but God was very angry when he went. That sounds a little capricious. We don't serve a god like that.
38:03 God has purpose in everything that he does. God was very angry when he went and the angel of lord stood in the road to oppose Balam. Balam was riding on his donkey and his two servants were with him. Balam's a man of means. He has servants with him.
38:20 When the donkey saw the angel of the Lord, standing in the road with a drawn sword in his hand. It turned off the road into a field. He's going to go around Balam beat the donkey to get it back on the road. Then, the angel of the Lord stood in a narrow path through the vineyards with walls on both sides and when the day donkey saw the angel of the Lord, it pressed close to the wall, crushing Balam's foot against it. So, he beat the donkey again.
38:55 Then the angel of the Lord moved on. It was a temptation to use the donkey from Shrek, okay? I resisted that temptation, okay? This is a donkey named Harriet who makes odd noises. So, then the angel of the Lord moved on ahead and stood in a narrow place where there was no room to turn or go around and either to the right or to the left and when the donkey saw the angel of the Lord, it lay down under Bala refused to go forward and he was angry and he beat it with its staff.
39:25 Three times, he beat this donkey and then the Lord opened the donkey's mouth That's a twist in the story, isn't it? And it said, the donkey said, clearly, in a language he could understand, human speak Then the Lord opened the donkey's mouth and it said to Bala what have I done to you to make you beat me these three times? Balam answered the donkey. Doesn't even say that he was scared Just answer the donkey Maybe he's a seer. He's used to hearing from the animals He is he has heard from all these spirits for a long time.
40:02 He's got a reputation as having heard. Donkey speaks to him. He just answers back. Well, you've made a fool of me. These two servants there but he also has those other guys that've come from Moab and Mideon probably around him.
40:14 You've made a fool of me. I'm here. I'm an important guy. You run me off the road into a field, you scrape my foot up against the rock, and then you just lay down and refuse to go anywhere. You made a fool of me.
40:25 If only I had a sword in my hand instead of this stick, I'd kill you right now. And the donkey said to Balam, am I not your own donkey? Which you have always been to this day. Have I been in the habit of doing this to you? Now, the donkey's getting smarmy.
40:42 Right? Do I do this every time? No. He said, Balam said to, wait a second here No, he said, did I skip something?
40:55 Speaker 3I did. Oh,
40:55 Speaker 1no. Anybody have the Bible open? We have books. They're called Bibles. Here we go.
41:04 That's a hymnal. Here we go. Numbers 22. I skipped three verses. It'll probably come up on the next slide.
41:11 It's important. Where's numbers? It's near the front. Here we go. Numbers 22 and it goes from gracious, what's happening with this thing now?
41:33 Numbers 31, 22, 31 says, then, the Lord opened Balam's eyes. This is a seer. He's so important and he's got such a reputation. People are coming from miles around to get him to curse their enemies, voodoo, right? To get him to bless their people Thank thank you.
41:55 That's quicker anyway, Blake. Thank you. Then, the Lord opened Balam's eyes and he saw the angel of the Lord standing in the road with his so sword drawn So, he bowed low and he fell face down Okay He was confronted with the angel of lord, messenger of the Lord. He had God's guy right in front of him and the angel of the Lord asked him, why have you beaten this donkey these three times? Don't beat your animals, alright?
42:29 Why have you beaten your donkey these three times? I have come here, the angel of the Lord says, I have come here to oppose you because your path is a reckless one It's a reckless one before me The donkey saw me and he turned away from me these three times he's taken up for the donkey and if it had not turned away, I would certainly have killed you by now. But I would have spared it I'd have spared that donkey but not you. Oh now Balaam, it's alright. Balaam said to the angel of the Lord, I have sinned.
43:20 I did not realize you were standing in the road to oppose me. I'm a seer that cannot see, right? This is angel of the Lord. I've sinned. I did not realize you're standing in the road to oppose me.
43:30 Now, if you are displeased, I'll go back. I'll go back. The angel of lord said to Balam, go with him. Go ahead. Go ahead.
43:39 God's got something that he's going to do. God can use any for his own glory, alright? He can use anything. Then, the angel of the Lord said to Bala go with the men but you will speak only what I tell you to speak and so Bala went with Balak officials and when Bala heard that Bala was coming, he went out to meet him at the Moabite town on the Arnon border and at the edge of his territory and Balak said to Balam, did I not send to you urgent summit? I'm an important guy too.
44:07 I said, come and I said, come now. Why didn't you come to me? Am I really not able to reward you? I've got all the riches. Well, I've come to you now, Balam replied, but I can't say whatever I please.
44:22 He's just had an experience with God right there. Fear of God actually was put into him along that path. Well, I've come to you now Bala replied but I I can't say whatever I please. I must speak only what God puts in my mouth He's already said that a couple of times. I think he believes it this time, maybe Then Balam went with Balak to carry out Huzath and Balak sacrificed cattle and sheep up on their hot places.
44:48 This is one of those places where Israelites are not supposed to go. They're not supposed to do these things the way that the other folks do em. Balak sacrificed cattle and sheep and gave some to Balam and the officials who are with him and that in itself is riches right there. Somebody else is paying your way. The next morning, Balak took Balam up to Bethmath, Baal, Baal?
45:10 Oh. Other gods and from there, he could see the outskirts of the Israelite camp and seeing them all spread out there. These are the Bible references to Balam. Our current passage is second Peter two fifteen to 16. Although, I am in numbers 22 right now.
45:26 I just finished with numbers 23. Mean, numbers 22. I'm going to summarize numbers 23, okay? So Balaam said, build me seven altars here and prepare the bulls over there and do this and just listen to me. I'm an important guy.
45:41 Do everything just as I said. Stay here beside your offering while I go aside. Perhaps, the Lord will come to meet me. He's done this a lot of times and we'll find out how he normally does it in a few minutes. Balam said to Balak, stand here beside your offering while I go inside.
45:59 Aside, then he went off to a barren hide and God met with him and Balam said, I prepared seven altars on each altar. I've offered a pool and a ram and the Lord put a word in Balam's mouth and he said, go back to Balam and give him this word and so he went back to him and found him standing beside his offering with all of the Moabite officials and Balam knows exactly why Balak sent for him. He knows exactly what Balak wants for him to do and he now got an actual word God. I don't know if he'd ever gotten an actual word from God before You can read into the text that he did but it doesn't say that anywhere and all of the other supporting literature says that he was a greedy, greedy man and he incited others to sin. Are you with me?
46:48 Balam spoke this message. Balak brought me out from Aram, the king of Moab, Eastern Mountains. Come, he said, and curse Jacob for me. Come and denounce Israel. And he says, now, how can I curse those whom God has not cursed?
47:04 How can I denounce those whom the Lord has not denounced? But he's already prepared Balak ahead that you know, what you want might not happen. In our day, do you hear God say, all I need is just a little seed money. And if that, then God will give you the treasures of heaven. And if it doesn't happen, do not tarry.
47:28 It's not always immediate. I think that that was craft. I'm pretty sure it was craft. He's craft. And so he'd already said that but now, he's saying for sure, this is the word I've got.
47:40 How can I curse those who God has not curse? How can I denounce those whom the Lord has not denounced? From the rocky peaks, I see them from the heights. I see a people who live apart, holy, set apart. And they do not consider themselves as one of the nations.
47:55 The Jews consider they were Jews and then they were the everybody else. We're God's people and that's everybody else. I see a people who live apart. They don't consider themselves one of the nations who can count the dust of Jacob or number even a fourth of Israel. Let me die the death of the righteous and may my final end be like theirs.
48:16 Balak said to Balam, what have you done to me? I brought you here to curse my people. I curse those people. What to me? I brought you to curse but you have done nothing but bless them and he answered, well, must I not speak what the Lord puts in my mouth?
48:31 Listen to this though. Next thing, Balak said to him, well, come to another place. You're only seeing the outskirts of the camp right here. Come on me to another place where you can see them and you will not see them all but you can see the outskirts of their camp from here too and from here, curse them for me from here and what do you he does? Verse 12 say, do not go with them.
48:51 Go ahead and go. And now he's already blessed the Israelites once but Balak is still saying, come on. Come on. Come on. Come on and curse him for me.
49:00 Come on. He knows the word of the Lord. There's no doubt. Said about these people. They're blessed.
49:10 So, he took him to the Field Of Zophim to top of Pisgah and there he built seven altars and offer a bull and ran on each altar and stay here. I'll go back and I'll meet with him over there and the Lord met with Baal and put a word in his mouth and go back to Balak and give him this word. So, he went to him, found him standing beside his offering and the Moabite officials, Balak asked him, what the Lord say? And then he spoke this message. Arise Balak and listen Hear me son of Zippor God is not human that he should die He's not human being that he should change his Really?
49:56 Didn't he, didn't God say, don't go with them Are you with me? If you keep on persisting and asking God for something that you want that you Do you think that he might did give it to Bala Psalm one zero six fifteen says and God gave them exactly what they wanted but it sent leanness into their souls Man, oh man. When Jesus is praying in the garden and he says, not my will but yours be done. That's removing from himself his desires, all his earthly desires or satisfaction, right? Did Balam do that?
50:48 Come on. It's a big, big kitty they've got for me. They've got lots of money. And then Balak, listen, arise Balak and listen. Here, son of Zippor.
51:01 God is human that he should lie. He's not a human that he should change his mind. Does he speak and then not act? He's already spoken and he's already acting and Bala still is here and and seeing what's going on Does he promise and then not fulfill I have received a command to bless and he is blessed and I cannot change it No misfortune is seen in Jacob and no misery misery is observed Israel. The Lord their God is with them.
51:30 The shout of the king is among them. God brought them out of Egypt. They have the strength of a wild ox. There's no divination again Jacob God's people curse because God's people are blessed no matter their circumstance They were in the desert, right? They've already complained against Mos all this kind of we're not getting to Peter today.
51:55 It's five minutes till ten. Good grief. No evil o against them. There's nothing I can do to touch him You thought that donkey made a fool of him Made a fool of Bala and his error and he let him know it by speaking through the donkey first It will now out of Jacob and of Israel see what God has done The people rise like a lioness. They rouse themselves like a lion and they and that does not rest till it devours its prey and drinks the blood of its victims.
52:43 Balak said to Balam, now he's given up on trying to get him to curse him. It seems he goes, neither curse nor bless. Just shut up Please, don't go on. Everything you say is scarier than the last thing you said. A heading in my Bible right after that says, Bala third message and then Balak said to Bala okay, come over here.
53:05 Let's go to another place. Perhaps, it'll please God to let you curse them from for me from there and Balak took Balam to the top of Paor overlooking the wasteland and Balam said, build me seven altars here, prepare seven bulls, and seven rams for me and Balak did as Balam had said and offered a bull and a ram on each altar and now, when Balam saw that it pleased the Lord to bless Israel that it is good to bless the people that God has blessed. Are you with me? Now, when he saw this, being the seer that he is, he saw this. He did not resort to I happen to have batteries right here Let the tension build He did not resort to divination as at other times but he turned his face out towards the wilderness and when Balab looked out and he saw Israel encamped but tribe by tribe, the spirit of God came on him.
54:21 Now, at the time, it was not like the Holy Spirit was indwelling believers like he does now. Jesus said to his disciples, the comforter will come and he will live in you. He'll be in your heart. At this time, the spirit of God would light on some and he'd speak the word from God and that would be it. It doesn't say that until right here by the way but he did not allow him to curse him and everything that he opened his mouth, all of some of it was talking about his own situation Now, the spirit of the God has lit upon him and this is what he spoke.
54:53 The prophecy of Balam, son of Beor, the prophecy of one whose eye sees clearly. You think he's thinking about all those other times that he's making this stuff up? Or that he had a little wispy idea that he could grab on to curse someone's enemies? This is the prophecy of Balam, son of Bayor, the prophecy of one who whose eyes sees clearly, prophecy of one who hears the word of God, who sees a vision from the almighty, who falls prostrate, and whose eyes are opened. How beautiful are your tents, Jacob?
55:29 Your dwelling places, Israel, like valleys and spread out like gardens beside a river like aloes planted by the Lord, like cedars beside the waters, waters will flow from their buckets in the desert. Their seed will have abundant water. Their king will be greater than Agag. The kingdom will be exalted. God brought them out of Egypt and they have strength of the wild ox and they devour hostile nations that are have set themselves up against God and God's people.
56:00 Break their bones in pieces and with arrows, they'll pierce them like a lion. They crouch and they lie down like a lioness. Who dares? To rouse them. May those who bless you be blessed and those who curse you be cursed, Israel.
56:14 And then Balak's anger burned against Balami. He struck his hands together and said to him, I summoned you to curse my enemies. But you've blessed them now these three times. Now, leave it once and go home. I said I would reward you handsomely but the Lord has kept you from being rewarded.
56:33 You don't get what you came for. So, Balaam doesn't get the money after all. Well, he didn't do what he said he was going to do, right? Or what he wanted to do. I guess he did.
56:43 Do what he said he was going to do. Bala answered Balak, I'd, did I not tell the messengers you sent me even if Balak gave me all the silver and gold in his palace? I had a I'd hedge that already. I I could not do anything of my own accord, good or bad to go beyond the command of the Lord. I must say only what the Lord says.
56:59 Now, I'm going back to my people but come and let me warn you of what this people will do to your people in the days to come. Balam's fourth message. He keeps going. It just keeps getting worse for the guy who called him. It keeps getting better for Israel.
57:16 Prophecy of Balam, son of Baor, the prophecy of one whose eyes sees clearly, he says again, prophecy of one who hears the words of God, who has the knowledge from the most high, who sees a vision from the almighty, who falls prostrate, whose eyes are open. I see him but not now. Behold him not near. Star will come out of Jacob. Now, he's prophesying about the Messiah.
57:38 Spirit of the Lord is resting upon him right then, right there. In fact, he can't be quiet. He keeps on. He prophesies about Jesus. A scepter will rise out of Israel.
57:47 He'll crush. He goes on. Edom will be conquered. Sarah, his enemy will be conquered. Israel will grow strong.
57:56 People of God, a ruler will come out of Jacob and it will destroy all the survivors of this old city. His fifth message went to the Amalekites. His sixth message went to the Kenites. He couldn't stop. His seventh message goes out and alas, who can live when God does this?
58:15 You should be on his side. You should be on his side. That's all 22, 23, 24. I did, I barely summarized. I don't read most of the whole thing.
58:29 The current passage didn't turn out to be the current passage. The narrative. I read that and then twenty five one through nine, I said is an aftermath, okay? The aftermath, 22 through 24 says explicitly that Balak did these things and if you just read that, you would think, I feel bad for Balaam. You know, that Balaam did the wrong things.
58:54 Right things. I feel bad for Balaam. Everything that he said was true. Poor guy. He was still going after the money.
59:02 Are are you with me? He was greedy. Peter uses him in his example of greed but not just greed. It's greed and immorality. Twenty five one through nine says, Why not?
59:20 Here we are. While Israel was staying in Shittim, the men began to indulge in sexual immorality with the Moabite women who invited them to the sacrifices of their gods. The people ate and bowed down before those gods and so, Israel joined in worshiping the Baal of Peor and the Lord's anger burned against them. Blake, can I take back over from up here? Alright.
59:54 So, that if I do it, that's what happens. He's really good at what he does. We did all this. Let me keep on going through here. We'll get that next week.
1:00:08 Good thing about going in order. Numbers thirty one eight says, Balam's death. It tells us how he died and he died with five other high level officials from Mideon and Moab. When his prophecies came true Revelation two fourteen talks about Balam's culpability. It actually says that 24, zero Israelites were swayed away and swept into sexual immorality with the Moabite or Midianite women and they were drawn away from the Lord their God and twenty one four of Revelation says and Bala taught Balak that the way to get to God's people was through sin.
1:01:02 Oh, that's terrible. It's absolutely terrible that the external, there's not any divination that can come against you if you are a child of God and there's not any way that anyone can curse what God has called blessed but if you choose to sin, it'll take you down a path. From Balam's own life, when God said clearly, do not go with them. End of story. Nope.
1:01:29 I'm not going. Instead, he went back to him again and said, but God, really? Alright, you get what you want. It's not going to end well for you. This got heavy without even going to Peter Balam was culpable in the death of 24,000 Israelites that were led away and it had before they could go into the promised land.
1:01:57 God was purifying his people. It was something that had to happen. It's horrible. Are you with me still? Alright.
1:02:05 Well, to be continued. Alright. Next week, he uses that for an example and by then, hopefully, y'all process the story. Read over and over again. There are a lot of troubles when you start trying to read into what's going on.
1:02:17 Just read what it says but read all of what it says, the whole council of God's word. If you just hear an isolated verse and you concentrate on that like God's going to open the doors of heaven and shower all of his treasures on you. Prosperity gospel is hogwash. There's some suffering that goes with this but God will be with you in the midst of it. Are you with me?
1:02:39 So, not a clean break point but can I get the band back up here? That always helps. Yeah, hit it, man. Come on. Yeah, man.
1:03:09 Thank you. Alright, the altars are always open but you don't have to come down but if you will come down, come down and pray. If you've been looking for something that God has been withholding and you know he's saying no. You know he said no. You know he's saying no.
1:03:29 I think that's a great place to be. First John one nine says, it's the very next book after second Peter. First John one nine says, that if you confess your sins, God is faithful and he is just to be forgiving your sins and he will cleanse you from all unrighteousness. Bala went the other way. He makes Peter's point for him really He did not repent of it.
1:03:56 He actually went back to the sin that he had originally intended after the fact but if you have committed something that was against God and you knew it, he offers cleansing. He offers forgiveness. He offers, actually, that verse goes on to say, if you confess your sins, he is faithful and just to forgive your sins and cleanse you of all unrighteousness. It is the ultimate start over point. That's what God is offering us.
1:04:19 Besides the sweet buy and buy, it's the here and now. When Jesus said, take my burden upon you for my burden is light. Can you imagine what it'd be like if you're walking around without that sin on your shoulders? Would you please come forward, make a step out today, and just step up here and pray and we'll sing. In Jesus name, lord, would you grant us open eyes to see our own sin and would you grant us the strength?
1:04:50 Lord, grant us the strength to bow the knee, to fall on our face before you, ask for your cleansing, and then have a place that we can get up and go forth praising. In Jesus name, amen.
1:05:05 Speaker 2Will you please stand up and let's worship God again through sweet by and by. If we keep our eyes on God, that's the place we're gonna look at. Amen? So it by and by. It's a beautiful song.
1:05:24 Speaker 3There's a land that
1:07:52 Speaker 1Amen. God almighty, thank you for the chance at repentance. I thank you lord that our story is not completely been written. We don't have that we don't have to go the way that we have gone, that we don't have to carry the burden lord of that, that you can end addiction, that you can end immorality, that you can put an end to it, that you can cleanse it, and it can be whiter than snow. In Jesus name, lord, we ask that you do that.
1:08:23 Keep on convicting us of our sin but convincing us of your righteousness and your ability to take it away. God, I pray that we would turn our hearts toward you and that you'd give us the wisdom that is from above. Cleanse us lord of all of our sin. Amen. I have a verse here from James as a benediction.
1:08:48 If any who does lack wisdom, you should ask God. Just go direct. Who give generously to all without finding fault and it will be given to you. Go to him and seek him in faith. I don't remember a single time ever where someone reached out in faith to Jesus and he turned him away.
1:09:06 Just didn't happen. Reach out in faith to Christ. In Jesus name, lord, we ask your blessing. And we ask that we would be blessing so that others may be blessed and that we would not curse with our lips nor our heart in Jesus name, amen.
