What does First B Jackson teach about bread of life?

Drawn from the messages where it was actually addressed: the words said from the front, the passages taught, and where to hear the whole thing.

At First Baptist Jackson, the teaching on the bread of life starts with John 6 and keeps coming back to a single question: who do you believe Jesus is, and what have you done with that belief? Pastor Ray walked the congregation through the whole of John 6, from the feeding of the five thousand through Peter's confession, showing how the crowd consistently sought Jesus for the wrong reasons. They wanted more bread, more miracles, a king who would solve their immediate problems. Jesus refused every version of that and pressed them toward something harder and more costly: belief in him as the one the Father sent, the true bread that came down from heaven.

The bread of life discourse sits at the center of this teaching. Jesus corrects a misreading that had been building since the manna in the wilderness. Moses did not give the bread from heaven, the Father gives it, and that bread is Jesus himself. Ray drew on Dietrich Bonhoeffer's distinction between cheap grace and costly grace to sharpen what is at stake. Grace without repentance, communion without confession, forgiveness without discipleship, these are cheap. What Jesus offers when he calls himself the bread of life is costly, because it cost God the life of His Son, and that cost cannot be treated lightly by those who receive it.

Pastor Carl, working through Mark 8, brought the same theme to bear on spiritual blindness and the slowness of understanding that marked even the disciples. They were in a boat with the one who had just multiplied loaves twice and were still arguing about having forgotten bread. The two-stage healing of the blind man in that passage was not incidental. It matched the disciples' own gradual journey toward seeing clearly. The bread of life is not received all at once, and the teaching at First Baptist takes that seriously, holding out patience alongside the high claim that Jesus makes about himself.

Mentioned along the way

  1. August 21, 2022 Sunday Aug 21st 11 am (Traditional Service) "Jesus Walks" Jesus walks on water, feeds thousands, and teaches that He is the bread of life. What does it mean to keep walking with Him when the crowd walks away?
  2. August 21, 2022 Jesus Walks Jesus walks away from a crown, walks on water, and walks with twelve who stay. A study in following Christ for who He is, not what He gives.
