What does First B Jackson teach about candle lighting?

Drawn from the messages where it was actually addressed: the words said from the front, the passages taught, and where to hear the whole thing.

At First B Jackson, the candle lighting on Christmas Eve is not a piece of atmosphere added to the service. It is a deliberate act of teaching, connected directly to what Scripture says Jesus came to do. Each year the ceremony begins with the Christ candle on the Advent wreath, lit by a family or elder in the congregation while John 8:12 is read aloud: Jesus declaring himself the light of the world, and promising that whoever follows him will never walk in darkness. Everything that follows grows out of that verse.

The flame is then passed from person to person through the room, and the pastors have consistently explained that the passing is the point. Drawing from Matthew 5:14-16, where Jesus calls his own followers the light of the world, and from John 1:5, that the darkness can never put out the true light, the teaching holds that Christ's light does not belong to a ceremony. It travels through people who trust him, out into the world around them. When the candles are blown out at the end of the service, that moment is used to make the contrast plain: the candles go out, but the light of Christ does not.

The candle lighting has also consistently been placed right after the offering, which goes to First B's local benevolence fund for people in need. That sequence is intentional. The same Jesus who is the light of the world is the one who said that whatever you do for the least of these, you do for him. Receiving his light and carrying it outward, the teaching says, shows up in ordinary acts of generosity just as much as it shows up in a candlelit room on Christmas Eve.
