What does First B Jackson teach about transfiguration?
Drawn from the messages where it was actually addressed: the words said from the front, the passages taught, and where to hear the whole thing.
At First B Jackson, the teaching on the Transfiguration starts with the Greek word itself. Pastor Ray spent significant time on metamorphoo, the word Matthew uses to describe what happened to Jesus on the mountain, pointing out that it is aorist passive indicative: it happened once, it happened to Jesus, and he did not do it to himself. God was transfiguring him. What the disciples saw on the outside was the inner reality of who Jesus already was. Moses and Elijah appeared, representing the Law and the Prophets, and then faded. Jesus alone remained.
The event sits six days after Peter's confession that Jesus is the Christ, and just after Jesus rebuked Peter as a stumbling block for resisting the path to Jerusalem. That sequence matters. The disciples knew the right answers and still missed what God was doing. Peter's first instinct on the mountain was to do something, to offer to build three tabernacles, and God interrupted him mid-sentence: "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased. Listen to him." Ray connected that command directly to Deuteronomy, where Moses told Israel to listen to the prophet God would raise up. Knowing the text is not the same thing as actually listening.
The same Greek word, metamorphoo, appears in Romans 12:2 and 2 Corinthians 3:18 to describe what God is doing in believers. That connection is the pastoral weight of the teaching at First B Jackson: the Transfiguration is not only an event in the past but a pattern for the present. Transformation is not something a person produces in themselves. It happens to us as we humble ourselves before God, one step at a time, over years.
