What does First B Jackson teach about workplace faith?

Drawn from the messages where it was actually addressed: the words said from the front, the passages taught, and where to hear the whole thing.

At First B Jackson, the teaching on faith in the workplace is grounded in the same foundation as everything else in the practical sections of the New Testament: who you already are in Christ comes before what you are told to do. In the 2017 series through Colossians, both Pastor Scott and Florin read all of Colossians 3:1-17 aloud before moving into the household codes, because they wanted the instructions for workers and employers to be heard as flowing out of putting off the old self and putting on the new. Strip that away, the point was made plainly, and the commands become rules. Keep it, and they become the natural expression of someone whose life is hidden with Christ.

Pastor Matt's 2018 sermon working through 1 Timothy 5:17-6:2 pressed on the same idea from a different angle, looking at how the church should treat those who labor in ministry and how believers should conduct themselves in their own working lives. Paul's appeal to the Old Testament command not to muzzle an ox while it threshes grain becomes, in that passage, a principle of fairness toward anyone who does honest work. Calvin is cited as arguing that God gave the command not for the sake of oxen but to train people toward fairness with workers, and Luther as noting simply that oxen cannot read, so the instruction was written for us. The application runs in both directions: workers have a legitimate claim to fair treatment, and those in positions over others bear a real responsibility to honor that.

The Colossians household codes, as both Pastor Scott and Florin taught them, address workers directly. The command to bond servants in Colossians 3:22-25 is to work not merely for appearances but as service rendered to the Lord rather than to people. The assumption running through all of it is that the workplace is not a secular space where faith goes quiet. It is one more arena where the old self and new self are in contest, and where the character described in Colossians 3:12-17, compassion, patience, forgiveness, love, is either showing or it is not.

The passage taught · 1 Corinthians 9

1 Am I not free? Am I not an apostle? Haven’t I seen Jesus Christ, our Lord? Aren’t you my work in the Lord?

2 If to others I am not an apostle, yet at least I am to you; for you are the seal of my apostleship in the Lord.

3 My defense to those who examine me is this.

4 Have we no right to eat and to drink?
