Hebrews 4:14-5:10

the main passage being preached through, covering the great high priest who passed through the heavens

14 Having then a great high priest, who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold tightly to our confession.

15 For we don’t have a high priest who can’t be touched with the feeling of our infirmities, but one who has been in all points tempted like we are, yet without sin.

16 Let us therefore draw near with boldness to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy, and may find grace for help in time of need.

1 For every high priest, being taken from among men, is appointed for men in things pertaining to God, that he may offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins.

2 The high priest can deal gently with those who are ignorant and going astray, because he himself is also surrounded with weakness.

3 Because of this, he must offer sacrifices for sins for the people, as well as for himself.

4 Nobody takes this honor on himself, but he is called by God, just like Aaron was.

5 So also Christ didn’t glorify himself to be made a high priest, but it was he who said to him, “You are my Son. Today I have become your father.”

6 As he says also in another place, “You are a priest forever, after the order of Melchizedek.”

7 He, in the days of his flesh, having offered up prayers and petitions with strong crying and tears to him who was able to save him from death, and having been heard for his godly fear,

8 though he was a Son, yet learned obedience by the things which he suffered.

9 Having been made perfect, he became to all of those who obey him the author of eternal salvation,

10 named by God a high priest after the order of Melchizedek.

Philippians 2

referenced to note that Christ humbled and emptied himself and was given the name above every name

1 If therefore there is any exhortation in Christ, if any consolation of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any tender mercies and compassion,

2 make my joy full, by being like-minded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind;

3 doing nothing through rivalry or through conceit, but in humility, each counting others better than himself;

4 each of you not just looking to his own things, but each of you also to the things of others.

5 Have this in your mind, which was also in Christ Jesus,

6 who, existing in the form of God, didn’t consider equality with God a thing to be grasped,

7 but emptied himself, taking the form of a servant, being made in the likeness of men.

8 And being found in human form, he humbled himself, becoming obedient to death, yes, the death of the cross.

9 Therefore God also highly exalted him, and gave to him the name which is above every name;

10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, those on earth, and those under the earth,

11 and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

12 So then, my beloved, even as you have always obeyed, not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.

13 For it is God who works in you both to will and to work, for his good pleasure.

14 Do all things without murmurings and disputes,

15 that you may become blameless and harmless, children of God without defect in the middle of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you are seen as lights in the world,

16 holding up the word of life; that I may have something to boast in the day of Christ, that I didn’t run in vain nor labor in vain.

17 Yes, and if I am poured out on the sacrifice and service of your faith, I rejoice, and rejoice with you all.

18 In the same way, you also rejoice, and rejoice with me.

19 But I hope in the Lord Jesus to send Timothy to you soon, that I also may be cheered up when I know how you are doing.

20 For I have no one else like-minded, who will truly care about you.

21 For they all seek their own, not the things of Jesus Christ.

22 But you know the proof of him, that, as a child serves a father, so he served with me in furtherance of the Good News.

23 Therefore I hope to send him at once, as soon as I see how it will go with me.

24 But I trust in the Lord that I myself also will come shortly.

25 But I counted it necessary to send to you Epaphroditus, my brother, fellow worker, fellow soldier, and your apostle and servant of my need;

26 since he longed for you all, and was very troubled, because you had heard that he was sick.

27 For indeed he was sick, nearly to death, but God had mercy on him; and not on him only, but on me also, that I might not have sorrow on sorrow.

28 I have sent him therefore the more diligently, that, when you see him again, you may rejoice, and that I may be the less sorrowful.

29 Receive him therefore in the Lord with all joy, and hold such in honor,

30 because for the work of Christ he came near to death, risking his life to supply that which was lacking in your service toward me.

Isaiah 40:31

used as the benediction: those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength, soar on wings like eagles, run and not grow weary

31 But those who wait for Yahweh will renew their strength. They will mount up with wings like eagles. They will run, and not be weary. They will walk, and not faint.

Recap

The message in order, in a few minutes of reading.

This message came from Hebrews 4:14 through 5:10, with the pastor walking the congregation back through the "let us" statements gathered so far in the letter before pressing into the passage's picture of Jesus as our great high priest. The connecting thread was that Christians need to pay close attention to what they have already heard, and that paying attention to who Jesus is as priest gives real confidence to approach God. The sermon ended at the door of the Melchizedek discussion, which was left for next week.

What was said

Before moving into new ground, the pastor reviewed every command and exhortation the letter has issued so far. He pointed out that most of them are not sharp imperatives aimed at the reader from a distance. They are hortatory subjunctives, "let us" statements, where the writer puts himself inside the group. Let us pay closer attention, let us fear, let us be diligent, let us draw near. That grammatical softness matters, because it means nobody is being lectured from an ivory tower.

The passage opens with "since we have a great high priest." The pastor noted that in the original language the letter says either "great" or "high" but not both together, and that piling both words onto this priest is deliberate. Every other priest in Israel's history was pointing toward this one. He connected this to William Tyndale coining the word "atonement" as a way of saying "at-one-ment," the idea that this priest has the ability to put sinners at one with a completely holy God.

A question the text raises is whether Jesus can really understand human weakness if he never sinned. The pastor sat with that objection directly. The letter says he was tempted in every way we are, yet without sin, and that "yet without sin" carries a second layer of meaning. When someone sins, new temptations follow to conceal and compound it. King David's situation was the example the pastor used. Jesus was never drawn into that spiral. He knows what temptation feels like but he never accumulated a debt of his own that needed covering.

The Old Testament priesthood was designed by God as a system with very specific conditions. The high priest had to be called by God, not self-appointed. He had to be taken from among the people so he could deal gently with those who were ignorant or had gone astray, because he himself was beset with weakness. And because of his own weakness, he was obligated to offer sacrifice not only for the people but for himself. The pastor pointed out that this is exactly where Jesus differs from every priest who came before him.

That difference changes the meaning of the throne. The pastor returned to the exhortation to draw near with confidence to the throne of grace. He said people are used to hearing about the great white throne of judgment, but right now, while it is still called today, it is a throne of grace. Mercy is not getting what we deserve. Grace, which he described with the phrase "God's riches at Christ's expense," is getting what we have not earned at all. The need to approach that throne is not occasional. His mercies are new every morning.

The sermon moved toward Psalm 2 and the declaration "You are My Son, today I have begotten You," which the letter quotes to establish that Christ did not take the honor of priesthood upon himself. Philippians was brought in alongside it: Christ humbled himself, emptied himself, and it was out of that obedience that he was given the name above every name. The same pattern holds for the priesthood. He did not glorify himself into the role. God appointed him to it.

The passage ends with the words "according to the order of Melchizedek," and the pastor stopped there on purpose, noting that only two verses in the Old Testament mention Melchizedek at all and that the subject deserved its own treatment. The congregation moved from the text into communion, with the life Jesus lived in "the days of his flesh" framing the bread and the cup. The benediction was drawn from Isaiah 40:31.

Doing a Bible study?

Here is a guide we have prepared for you: the passages in order, questions for the group, and room to write.

  1. Pastor Mark reviewed several 'let us' statements from Hebrews before getting into the main text. What stands out to you about the fact that the writer of Hebrews includes himself in those commands rather than just telling his readers what to do?
  2. Pastor Mark said that the priestly system of the Old Testament was set up to point toward Christ, and that we all need saving, including him personally. How does admitting that you need a savior sit with you, and does it get easier or harder over time?

27:36 I don't ever do stuff like this but I'm going do it today, okay? Between services like connect hour, y'all y'all ready to go and I know Between connect hour and the next service, y'all hang out in the fellowship hall, alright? Kiddos, is that okay? We are trying to get everything ready for classes in Awana and everything else that's happening and so, after Sunday school like children's church is happening downstairs. They're going to close doors and everything else.
28:03 So, they're going to do kind of a deep clean and they just want everybody to be up there. Is that alright? Can I get an amen? Alright, a witness. It's just to get folks kind of cleared out so that we can do that and leave it in a state of I won't say grace but a state of cleanliness at least.
28:19 It's next to godliness if you would. We'll head down the hall to the connect hour and then go from there. The next hour, just leave those so lethal. Alright. Y'all can go now.
28:28 Thank you very much for your kind attention. Alright, where are we? We're in Hebrews. We're in Hebrews. We finished last week fourteen, fifteen, 16 were the last things that I covered but I'm going to go back and pick those up today.
28:47 I actually did the sermon earlier in the week than I usually do. Usually, I'm coming in and tweaking things up till the last minute but I I didn't have that opportunity. I was gone yesterday and so we'll see what comes up on the screen. Alright. Now, Hebrews four fourteen through five ten.
29:07 I'm actually going to start off with a lot of books have a lot of imperatives and the imperatives are do this and do that and their commands. This one so far at least has had softened commands they're called, hortatory subjunctives. I mentioned it in passing last week. It is a let us. Let us pray.
29:28 Let us do this. Let us and it's including the writer of Hebrews and including themselves in the mix of the people. Let us together do these things and so, I'm just gonna give you a list of all of them grammatically, not throwing anything out. All the imperatives so far and all the exhortations or the hortatory subjunctive so far. So here we go.
29:52 There aren't many of them. Okay? But last week, we hit as many as we had seen in the whole book. So, I'm going hit those again this morning and then go forward. Let all the angels of God worship him.
30:02 That is an imperative but it's not an imperative for us right there. It's an imperative for all the angels of God and it's comparing Jesus to the angels. Now, the main thesis of the book of Hebrews is Jesus is better than and to begin with, it's Jesus is better than the angels. So, in the sixth verse, it's right after the exordium, the start, after it's extolled Jesus and lifted him up high and said that he was the exact representation and nature of God and that he was exact imprint of his glory, the radiance of his glory. Then, two verses later, three verses later, it's let all the angels of God worship Jesus because Jesus is better than angels.
30:44 That's the point there. The next one is, sit yourself down at my right hand. This is from a Psalm that the writer of Hebrews quotes speaking of Jesus and so, this is elevating Christ to sitting in the place of honor next to God the father in the heavenlies, right? So, this is sit yourself down at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet, okay? This is of Jesus and that's not an imperative for you.
31:12 That's one for Jesus. It's his alone. Next one, oh, this one is for us. For this reason, we must pay much closer attention. Actually, that one's neither technically an imperative or it's adjunctive but it ties to the next one in green there so that we do not drift away.
31:29 In order that we do not drift away, we must pay closer attention to what we have already heard and that's what we are tasked with over and over and over and over in Hebrews is examining the scriptures and seeing what's there, okay? Seeing what's really there, not what we invent but what's there. For this reason, we must pay closer attention to what we have heard so that we do not drift away from it because it is entirely possible to just start drifting especially if you ignore. Later on, it'll be if you ignore fellowship and getting together but right now, it's paying attention to what God's word says. The next one in chapter three is carefully consider decisively all the way through to the end.
32:14 Absolutely top to bottom, carefully consider the apostle and high priest of our confession. Jesus, Jesus, Jesus. Okay, that's the the imperative for us for there. Two of em. Pay closer attention what you've already heard.
32:27 That's why I'm doing a review right now. So, that you don't drift away from it and carefully consider decisively all the way through this Jesus, the apostle and high priest of our confession, Jesus and then last week, we hit several of em and here they are. Let us take heed. Let's take heed. So, that's pay attention what we've already heard.
32:46 Take heed not just pay attention but take heed. Listen to it. Next one is let us fear and this one last week, I didn't have a real good illustration quite honestly but if you're looking in your rear view mirror and you see this, even if you're going the speed limit or under, even if you have your seat belt on, even if you're not texting while you're driving, even if you're not doing anything wrong, when you see a policeman behind you, isn't there a little bit of sit up straight, two and ten. There's a little bit of that. Even for the policeman among us, you feel the same way.
33:26 If you're not in uniform, right? So, there's a little bit of holy fear. There's a little fear. Let us fear particularly in that case it says, let us fear if there may be any reason that it might seem that anyone of y'all has fallen. Oh, has fallen short, it goes on, fallen short of reaching that rest that God promises.
33:50 So, anyway, we'll get that off the screen real quick and that thing just went blue all of a sudden, Blake. Let us let us then be diligent to enter the rest. That sounds like, let us work hard so that we can rest. It is let us be diligent, paying attention to what we've already seen and heard and paying attention to this great high priest. There's a lot more in between all these hoardatory subjunctives but let us be diligent.
34:17 Let's be serious about it. This is a serious time to consider this Jesus. Let's be diligent. Let us draw near with confidence to the throne of grace. That is in the first part of what I'm going to hit today but recognize that it's a throne of great grace.
34:35 How many times have you heard of the throne of judgement? The great white throne, judgement. Today, while it's still called today, it's a throne of grace. Let's go to him. We can draw near with confidence by the blood of Jesus to the throne of grace.
34:54 So, here we go. Starting in the text and we'll just move through it. Hopefully, clip, clip, clip through it. Therefore, since we have a great high priest. Now, the Old testament priests is a system that we are not all that familiar with, right?
35:10 How many of y'all just really, really familiar with the priestly system of the Old Testament? Not many of us. There are a few that have kind of studied up and thought about it and considered it. For us, as Americans, this one is one where we are incredibly individualistic and we don't really think so much about needing anybody to make us better but if we start from further back than that, do you find yourself lacking if you're honest? Should I do it every head bowed and every eye closed?
35:43 Do you find yourself lacking? If you're honest, you do. And so, if you are lacking and God almighty is not lacking for anything, he is completely and utterly holy cannot abide sin and we are sinful. We need to be made at one. We need a way and God throughout the whole history of Israel passed before this time had set up this plan to point us towards Christ.
36:17 We need a savior. We need saving all of us. That's not a statement from someone in an ivory tower saying that you need saving. I need saving. I need a savior.
36:30 I cannot do this on my own and that simple admission and the humility of saying that recognizes that a priest is necessary. Now, this says, therefore, since we have, since we have a great high priest, Old Testament, it it's a translation issue but it says either great or high but it doesn't say, great high priest. This is the most elevated in the scriptures of any priest ever named and it's, of course, because it's Jesus. It's what all the other priests have been pointing towards. I've mentioned it several times that Tyndall when he was translating the Bible into English, he came up with the word atonement, atonement because there wasn't a sufficient word he thought in English and so he kind of made one up and it's at one meant.
37:14 At onement. This great high priest has the ability to put us at one with almighty God. Sinners that we are. He has the ability to cleanse us of all unrighteousness. If you confess your sins, he's faithful and just to be forgiven your sins and cleansing you from all unrighteousness.
37:35 Wow. To start from that place. This is a great high priest. He can expiate or propitiate if you want to use the technical jargon. Atonement is possible.
37:48 Therefore, since we have a great high priest who passed through the heavens. This is not an earthly priest. He's going to go into that just a minute here. Who passed through the heavens? Jesus ascended into the heavens.
38:02 He's seated at the right hand of the father. He's interceding for us, interceding for us. Why? Because he's the priest. He's our great high priest.
38:11 He is a good example. He is one of our joint. He we are joint heirs with him. Yeah. But he is our great high priest.
38:20 Therefore, since we have a great high priest who passed through the heavens, Jesus, the son of God, let us hold fast our confession. Let us fear. Let us be diligent. Let us hold fast our confession. For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses.
38:37 Jesus can sympathize with your weaknesses. I have heard people say and I've been listening I don't know. Jesus, it was Jesus. He's God. Of course, he could do it.
38:50 Yeah, he can walk. He doesn't have the same kind of temptations I do. This says he did. Yet, he was without sin. It says that he did.
38:58 It's not magic. He didn't do it just by magic. He did it by submitting himself to the spirit of God. He walked in the flesh on this Earth through the same types of situations that we walk and he was without sin. So, is our great example.
39:16 He's also our great high priest. He knows what it's like to suffer. For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our witness. Think about, I'm I'm just was thinking about the ways that Jesus, the ways that Jesus suffered. He was called a wine bibber and a glutton.
39:35 Though he wasn't. He was mocked and scorned continually I would imagine he had some run ins with his parents where they were wrong and he was right. We have one little example. I'm getting away from him. He knows what it's like to be human.
39:57 He knows what it's like. Yet, yet, he doesn't have the problem of having sinned and having a a puck against his record, a a check mark next to sin. He didn't have any sin debt at all. So, he knows what it's like to be tempted. Corinthians says, and he'll give us a way of escape.
40:18 Knows what it's like. Be tempted. We don't have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses. He can sympathize with our weaknesses. He knows what that feels like.
40:27 But we have one who has been tempted in all things just as we are. Yet, he's without sin. Now, there are two different possible interpretations of what yet without sin means. Yet, without sin meaning he didn't commit any and he didn't. We've got that multiple places, other places in the Bible.
40:42 It says that he didn't and it says it right here but there's also another level of thinking to this to say, he was tempted in every way that we are tempted except for since he didn't sin, he didn't have the follow-up sense that follow after the original. Think of David, King David. So, he's having looked off of his balcony onto another balcony, sees Bathsheba and he is tempted right there and then he follows through on that temptation and then, in order to cover up that temptation, he calls husband home from the field and tries to get him situated so that you see what I'm talking about? He's covering up his own sin. I know the kids are gone but I still just don't need to tell the whole story every time.
41:33 They're saying, yet Jesus was without the problem of having sin being further tempted to try to cover it up. That's true too but I like that Jesus says, come on to me all you who labor and are heavy laden and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you because my burden is light. I've I've said it before and I'll say it again. Can you imagine what it would be like to have no sin?
41:57 That just stacks up on you, that follows you around, that sticks to you, that clings to you, that you wake up. In a sweat. Worrying about. Jesus had none of that. He was without sin but he does know what it's feel like to be human.
42:16 He does know and he can direct because of that and he can mediate because of that. The priest of the Old Testament. I think it gets into that Let us therefore draw near with confidence to the throne of grace. So, we are not just holding fast our confession. Jesus is the Christ.
42:35 Jesus is the Christ. He is my savior. He is the way, the truth, the life. We are about to take communion in a few minutes and that is a statement saying that I trust in Jesus to handle my own sin and to direct me into God's righteousness. I want for that to be.
42:55 I want to take that in. I want to remember it. Hold fast the confession that Jesus is Christ, the anointed one. Therefore, let us all though collectively draw near with confidence to the throne of grace because it is unmerited favor. If you're looking at Jesus saying, he is so holy though.
43:14 He cannot understand me because he didn't have any sin. What he's offering is grace which is unmerited favor. Yes, you're a sinner. Yes, I'm a sinner but he's offering free, unmerited favor. It's grace.
43:30 God's riches at Christ's expense. My brother mentions that every time I I talk to him. Grace, God's grace. God's riches at Christ's expense. Let us draw near with confidence to the throne of grace so that we may receive mercy.
43:47 So that we may receive exactly what we deserve. No. So that we may receive mercy. Not what we deserve. And grace.
43:55 Which is way not what we deserve. It's unmerited favor of God. So that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need and when's the time of need? Every day. Every minute, every hour of every day.
44:15 His mercies are new every morning. His grace is sufficient for us. God, may we all lever, ever, ever live in that lord, when we fail you, may we remember that your mercies are new every morning day by day we can live this life in submission to you. Amen. Here we talk about the the build up to Christ for every high priest taken from among men is appointed on behalf of men.
44:44 Things pertaining to God. So, God set up the system. He said how it would be when they were in the tabernacle, when they were in the temple. He had a way of doing this. They had a day of atonement.
44:56 It was one day of atonement per year and they had a high priest and he was the only one and he had to make sure that he was completely prayed up and completely cleansed and had done all of the things that God said that he needed to do and even then, they tied a rope around his ankle when he would go into the Holy of Holies in case God struck him down, they could drag him out without going in themselves because they knew men. Sudden death, every high priest that was taken from among men is appointed on behalf of men. God said, this is the system that you'll use until you see what it's there for. And I will choose these. Holy men.
45:39 And things pertaining to me. If they're going to approach me, they're going to have to do it in my manner and that was the manner. In order to offer both gifts and sacrifices what? 4¢. It is as unpopular as the notion is, sin exist.
45:58 And there's a debt that must be paid In order to offer both gifts and sacrifices for sin, there are priests and there were lesser days and lesser times but then, there was that one time a year that that was the day of at one met when you could know that all of all that could be done was being done. It was still in anticipation of an anointed Christ, Messiah. He can deal gently. With the ignorant misguided. This is talking about, that's a small H.
46:33 This is talking about the high priest, Old Testament and some of y'all are from the Catholic tradition and priest leaness is easier for y'all to deal with. I grew up Southern Baptist. My goodness. We don't, yeah, I don't need a priest. But if you have a good priest, he can deal with ignorant and misguided people because he himself is also beset with weakness.
46:57 If if I am considering in counseling that, wow, you shouldn't have done that. Of course, the Bible says, no. If that's my only answer, it's not, oh, how excruciating that must be. Oh, it's got to move you. It's gotta be moving in a good or a great or a high priest should be that way.
47:22 Every high priest taken from among men is appointed on behalf of men and things pertaining to God. He is or was the mediator between God and man. It was he was there to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins and that person could deal gently with the ignorant and misguided. Do you feel ignorant? And things pertaining to God.
47:46 Well, let's take closer attention to what we've already heard. Can you see how gentle this author Hebrews is being? He, a good priest can be deal gently with the ignorant and the misguided. Is it easy to go astray? It is easy to go astray.
48:02 If you start focusing on the wrong things or if you fall under the deceitfulness of sin and go after the promise of sin rather than the promise of God, you will find yourself off track in a one ditch or the other. You can easily be off track because you've been misguided. He can deal gently with the ignorant misguided. Since he himself is also beset with weaknesses. Now, this is where Jesus different.
48:27 Jesus didn't have any sin and these other priest and high priest do. So, they had a debt for their own sin that had to be paid. So, if they were to go in and use the blood of bulls and goats and pay for sin, it's on their behalf. So, that was a temporary thing pointing towards a solution and because of it, because he is beset with weakness, because of it, he's obligated to offer sacrifices for sins. As for the people just all for himself, he has to do it for himself too.
49:03 And no one takes the honor to himself. This is saying that you didn't get to be a priest by popularity contest. You didn't get to be a priest by being voted in. And you didn't get to be it by being a dictator taking it to yourself. I'm going be the of this particular little community I'm the holiest one here and obviously, it will be me.
49:30 No one takes that honor to himself but receives it. Receives it when he's called by God even as Aaron was. You can go back, read the story of that if you want to. This does not downplay the role of priest. Now, it is to the Hebrews.
49:46 It doesn't downplay the role. It says that they were there for a reason, for a time, but we have now a great high priest who can sympathize with us completely, very, very good at this. He's tempted in every way we're tempted but he does not have his own sin debt so therefore, he can offer that clean slate to whoever would believe. Next, for every high priest taken from among men is appointed on behalf of men and things pertaining to God. We're not going all the way to verse 10.
50:17 By the way, don't be worried. We're going to finish this slide. For every high priest taken from among men, appointed on behalf of men, things pertaining to God. In order to offer both and sacrifice for sins, he can deal gently with the ignorant and misguide. Since he himself is also beset with weakness and because of it, he's obligated.
50:40 He's obligated to offer sacrifices not just for the people but also for himself and no one takes the honor to himself but receives it when he's called by God even as Aaron was. Now, Aaron was of the line of the priest and everybody in this community would have known exactly who Aaron was, exactly how he's called, exactly how he's faithful, and exactly how he felt. They would have known all of those things. Now, before we get to the end of the rest of the text, it's going to start a different can of worms really. There are two verses in the Bible that mentioned Melchizedek, two verses in the Old Testament and one of em is quoted in the text in the next couple of verses.
51:20 The ironic priesthood is what they were familiar with and this is what was being honestly, it's being lifted up saying, this was the system but that system pointed to this system. I can't resist. Sorry, I'm going to go ahead. So, also Christ did not glorify himself so as to become a high priest. What does Philippians say that Christ did?
51:44 He humbled himself. He emptied himself and it is out of obedience that he was given the name that's higher than any other name. He walked this life perfectly. Christ did not glorify himself so as to become a high priest but he said to him, Jesus said to God, I mean, God said to Jesus, you are my son. Today, I have begotten you.
52:07 That's Psalm two. We've already heard it quoted in Hebrews twice. I will surely surely tell you the decree of the Lord. He said to me, you are my son today. I have begotten you.
52:16 He is eternally begotten of the father. Oh, the creeds have a lot of lot of use. Just as he also says in another passage, you are a priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek. I will get into that next week. I can't get into that today right before offering.
52:33 The Lord has sworn and will not change his mind. You are a priest forever according to the order Melchizedek. So, in the days of his flesh, there's, I won't call the elders forward if you would. As we consider the bread, we're going to consider this. In the days of Jesus's flesh, he actually did walk this Earth.
52:53 He actually was tempted exactly like we're tempted yet was without sin. So, in the days of his flesh, look at this. All of this prolegomena leading up to it. We got eternity past where the plan was set that Christ would be the way. And then we've got Abraham's not even on the list yet because he's off the side of the screen.
53:18 We got Moses, Josh, we got David, we got Isaiah, we got all this, and then we got a huge gap and just this little span of the days of Christ's flesh. Thirty, thirty three years. You walked, lord. In holiness, you walked without sin. You saw and you took in everything around you.
53:39 You had compassion. You're moved to tears. The text says. God almighty, I pray that you'd bless this bread as we consider the life of Jesus that was so perfectly lived. It is an example for us but it's not only an example for us.
53:59 He made propitiation. He made the payment, the sacrifice himself. He effectively went into that holy place. And could stand on his own without any need for any other mediator and he became lord. Our mediator.
54:23 The only way, the truth, and the life. Lord, would you bless this bread as we distribute it? On the same night that Jesus was betrayed, he took bread after supper. This is amazing to me. And after it given thanks, he broke it and he said to his disciples that were there and they transmitted it as a matter of first importance that which Jesus did right there.
58:00 They transferred it and Paul wrote it down as a matter of first importance. This is a matter of first importance. He said, this is my body which is broken for you. I am giving myself. I'm giving my own life and blood for you.
58:16 This is my body broken for you. Would you take this and eat it and do it as often as you will in remembrance of me. Thank you, Jesus. I thank you lord that you were, that you know what it's like to be tempted, that you didn't just come through it by magic, drawing on resources that are unavailable to us. You you did this based on your complete submission to the Holy Spirit.
58:48 A resource that is available to those of us who believe. Lord God, I pray that everyone in this room that knows you would would consider you top to bottom fully, completely that they would pay closer attention to what they've already heard and lord that it would make a deep and lasting impact that that your righteous life that was completely perfectly lived can lead to our righteous lives that are very well lived. Humble. Able to answer the questions of an asking world. Lord, if there be someone here present that does not and has not received the offering that was made.
59:33 That doesn't put their faith in Christ. I pray that somebody that they're sitting next to will share it with them in a way that makes sense, that you'll break through. In Jesus name, we ask your blessing on this little plastic cup of grape juice that represents the precious and sacred blood that was built In the same way that he taken the bread, he took the cup after supper also and he said to his disciples who were there, who are very familiar with that old covenant. They're also familiar with the promise of God in Jeremiah that there would be a new cup. They had seen it lived out.
1:03:23 We can read about it. Lived out perfectly. Read the gospels. Jesus lived it out perfectly and then around that table that night, he said, this is the new covenant in my blood. That's how it was going to be sealed.
1:03:38 This is the new covenant in my blood. Take this and drink it. Drink it in and do it as often as you will and remembers. Carl, do we have one planned? Or you just plan on me going long?
1:04:00 The course of this last song? Okay. Okay. Yeah, would you stand with me? Cross with me come and die and find that I may truly live oh the wonderful cross all who gather here by grace drawn near and bless your name Amen.
1:04:52 For the benediction this morning How about Isaiah forty thirty one? I know that you can hear this and you can see, oh, even the high priest, the Old Testament had their own sin they had to deal with. I got mine and Jesus is offering to deal with it and he's the great high priest. He had none of his own. He can deal with it and so, put your trust in him.
1:05:13 Eat upon, serve, him, those who hope in the Lord, they will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles. They will run and not grow weary. They walk and they will not be faint and to be continued. Next week, we'll finish up that passage today.
1:05:28 Jesus name, would you bless us lord as we go forward? Lift us up. Amen.
