Let Us Fear, Let Us Be Diligent

Scripture referenced 9 passages

The passage this message was preached from, in full, with every other passage it reached for.

  • Psalm 147 congregation invited to sing from it at the opening

1 Praise Yah, for it is good to sing praises to our God; for it is pleasant and fitting to praise him.

2 Yahweh builds up Jerusalem. He gathers together the outcasts of Israel.

3 He heals the broken in heart, and binds up their wounds.

4 He counts the number of the stars. He calls them all by their names.

5 Great is our Lord, and mighty in power. His understanding is infinite.

6 Yahweh upholds the humble. He brings the wicked down to the ground.

7 Sing to Yahweh with thanksgiving. Sing praises on the harp to our God,

8 who covers the sky with clouds, who prepares rain for the earth, who makes grass grow on the mountains.

9 He provides food for the livestock, and for the young ravens when they call.

10 He doesn’t delight in the strength of the horse. He takes no pleasure in the legs of a man.

11 Yahweh takes pleasure in those who fear him, in those who hope in his loving kindness.

12 Praise Yahweh, Jerusalem! Praise your God, Zion!

13 For he has strengthened the bars of your gates. He has blessed your children within you.

14 He makes peace in your borders. He fills you with the finest of the wheat.

15 He sends out his commandment to the earth. His word runs very swiftly.

16 He gives snow like wool, and scatters frost like ashes.

17 He hurls down his hail like pebbles. Who can stand before his cold?

18 He sends out his word, and melts them. He causes his wind to blow, and the waters flow.

19 He shows his word to Jacob; his statutes and his ordinances to Israel.

20 He has not done this for just any nation. They don’t know his ordinances. Praise Yah!

Hebrews 3:7-19

read through as the prior week's text on taking heed, covering the Exodus generation's unbelief and hardened hearts

7 Therefore, even as the Holy Spirit says, “Today if you will hear his voice,

8 don’t harden your hearts, as in the rebellion, like as in the day of the trial in the wilderness,

9 where your fathers tested me by proving me, and saw my deeds for forty years.

10 Therefore I was displeased with that generation, and said, ‘They always err in their heart, but they didn’t know my ways;’

11 as I swore in my wrath, ‘They will not enter into my rest.’”

12 Beware, brothers, lest perhaps there be in any one of you an evil heart of unbelief, in falling away from the living God;

13 but exhort one another day by day, so long as it is called “today”; lest any one of you be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin.

14 For we have become partakers of Christ, if we hold fast the beginning of our confidence firm to the end:

15 while it is said, “Today if you will hear his voice, don’t harden your hearts, as in the rebellion.”

16 For who, when they heard, rebelled? No, didn’t all those who came out of Egypt by Moses?

17 With whom was he displeased forty years? Wasn’t it with those who sinned, whose bodies fell in the wilderness?

18 To whom did he swear that they wouldn’t enter into his rest, but to those who were disobedient?

19 We see that they were not able to enter in because of unbelief.

Hebrews 4:1-13

main preaching passage for the sermon

1 Let us fear therefore, lest perhaps anyone of you should seem to have come short of a promise of entering into his rest.

2 For indeed we have had good news preached to us, even as they also did, but the word they heard didn’t profit them, because it wasn’t mixed with faith by those who heard.

3 For we who have believed do enter into that rest, even as he has said, “As I swore in my wrath, they will not enter into my rest”; although the works were finished from the foundation of the world.

4 For he has said this somewhere about the seventh day, “God rested on the seventh day from all his works”;

5 and in this place again, “They will not enter into my rest.”

6 Seeing therefore it remains that some should enter into it, and they to whom the good news was preached before failed to enter in because of disobedience,

7 he again defines a certain day, today, saying through David so long a time afterward (just as has been said), “Today if you will hear his voice, don’t harden your hearts.”

8 For if Joshua had given them rest, he would not have spoken afterward of another day.

9 There remains therefore a Sabbath rest for the people of God.

10 For he who has entered into his rest has himself also rested from his works, as God did from his.

11 Let us therefore give diligence to enter into that rest, lest anyone fall after the same example of disobedience.

12 For the word of God is living and active, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and is able to discern the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

13 There is no creature that is hidden from his sight, but all things are naked and laid open before the eyes of him to whom we must give an account.

Psalm 95

quoted repeatedly within Hebrews 3-4 as the Holy Spirit speaking through David: today if you hear his voice do not harden your hearts

1 Oh come, let’s sing to Yahweh. Let’s shout aloud to the rock of our salvation!

2 Let’s come before his presence with thanksgiving. Let’s extol him with songs!

3 For Yahweh is a great God, a great King above all gods.

4 In his hand are the deep places of the earth. The heights of the mountains are also his.

5 The sea is his, and he made it. His hands formed the dry land.

6 Oh come, let’s worship and bow down. Let’s kneel before Yahweh, our Maker,

7 for he is our God. We are the people of his pasture, and the sheep in his care. Today, oh that you would hear his voice!

8 Don’t harden your heart, as at Meribah, as in the day of Massah in the wilderness,

9 when your fathers tempted me, tested me, and saw my work.

10 Forty long years I was grieved with that generation, and said, “It is a people that errs in their heart. They have not known my ways.”

11 Therefore I swore in my wrath, “They won’t enter into my rest.”

Genesis 2

identified as the somewhere the author of Hebrews quotes about God resting on the seventh day from all his works

1 The heavens, the earth, and all their vast array were finished.

2 On the seventh day God finished his work which he had done; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had done.

3 God blessed the seventh day, and made it holy, because he rested in it from all his work of creation which he had done.

4 This is the history of the generations of the heavens and of the earth when they were created, in the day that Yahweh God made the earth and the heavens.

5 No plant of the field was yet in the earth, and no herb of the field had yet sprung up; for Yahweh God had not caused it to rain on the earth. There was not a man to till the ground,

6 but a mist went up from the earth, and watered the whole surface of the ground.

7 Yahweh God formed man from the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.

8 Yahweh God planted a garden eastward, in Eden, and there he put the man whom he had formed.

9 Out of the ground Yahweh God made every tree to grow that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food, including the tree of life in the middle of the garden and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

10 A river went out of Eden to water the garden; and from there it was parted, and became the source of four rivers.

11 The name of the first is Pishon: it flows through the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold;

12 and the gold of that land is good. Bdellium and onyx stone are also there.

13 The name of the second river is Gihon. It is the same river that flows through the whole land of Cush.

14 The name of the third river is Hiddekel. This is the one which flows in front of Assyria. The fourth river is the Euphrates.

15 Yahweh God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to cultivate and keep it.

16 Yahweh God commanded the man, saying, “You may freely eat of every tree of the garden;

17 but you shall not eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil; for in the day that you eat of it, you will surely die.”

18 Yahweh God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make him a helper comparable to him.”

19 Out of the ground Yahweh God formed every animal of the field, and every bird of the sky, and brought them to the man to see what he would call them. Whatever the man called every living creature became its name.

20 The man gave names to all livestock, and to the birds of the sky, and to every animal of the field; but for man there was not found a helper comparable to him.

21 Yahweh God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep. As the man slept, he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh in its place.

22 Yahweh God made a woman from the rib which he had taken from the man, and brought her to the man.

23 The man said, “This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh. She will be called ‘woman,’ because she was taken out of Man.”

24 Therefore a man will leave his father and his mother, and will join with his wife, and they will be one flesh.

25 The man and his wife were both naked, and they were not ashamed.

14 Having then a great high priest, who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold tightly to our confession.

15 For we don’t have a high priest who can’t be touched with the feeling of our infirmities, but one who has been in all points tempted like we are, yet without sin.

Recap

The message in order, in a few minutes of reading.

The pastor worked through Hebrews 4:1-13, a passage he described as the most grammatically difficult he has encountered in this series. He traced the argument the author of Hebrews makes around the theme of rest, warning the congregation that the same unbelief and disobedience that kept the Exodus generation out of the promised land can keep people short of God's rest today.

What was said

The passage opens with a warning drawn from the history of Israel in the wilderness. The author of Hebrews quotes Psalm 95 repeatedly, pointing to a generation that heard the promise of God, saw His works for forty years, and still hardened their hearts. The pastor read through last week's section again so the congregation could hear how many times the theme repeats: unbelief and disobedience go together, and one leads to the other. If you truly believe something, you act in accordance with it.

The command "let us fear" in verse one is the hinge of the new section. The pastor pushed back on the popular claim that the Bible says "fear not" 365 or 366 times, calling it one of those things that travels around the world before anyone checks. His point was that here the command runs the other direction. The fear in view is the fear that someone within the community of faith may seem to have come short of the rest God promises.

The good news, the pastor said, was preached to the Exodus generation just as it has been preached to us. The Greek word is related to "euangelion," the gospel. They were evangelized. But the word they heard did not profit them because it was not united with faith. Pistis, the Greek word for faith, carries both sides: belief and trust on the front end, fidelity and faithfulness as the action that follows. Word and faith have to be joined together.

The author of Hebrews then works through a timeline to establish that God's rest is still open. David wrote Psalm 95 roughly four hundred years after Joshua led Israel into Canaan. If Joshua had already given the final rest God was promising, the Holy Spirit would not still be saying "today, if you hear His voice, do not harden your hearts" centuries later. The rest remains. There is still a Sabbath rest, a word the pastor noted the author of Hebrews appears to have coined, for the people of God.

The command that follows all of this is "let us be diligent to enter that rest." The pastor acknowledged the phrase sounds like it is pointing toward effort, but the diligence is about fixing faith entirely on Christ and not drifting off onto anything else, whether self-reliance or what he called the Christian industrial complex. The collective nature of the letter matters here: the commands are first-person plural. The congregation encourages one another, stirs one another up, and keeps pointing one another back to Christ.

The tool God gives for that work is His word. The word of God is living, active, and sharper than any two-edged sword, able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart. The pastor said reading scripture will uncover your own intentions if you let it. It is not only diagnostic, it is also transforming, but it has to be received with faith.

The passage closes by pointing to Jesus as the great high priest who has passed through the heavens. The pastor noted that Joshua and Jesus are the same name in Hebrew, Yeshua, and that the author of Hebrews is making that connection deliberately. Joshua brought a temporal rest into a physical land. Jesus is the one in whom the rest that remains is actually found. Because He was tempted in every way we are, yet without sin, the invitation stands to draw near with confidence to the throne of grace to receive mercy and find grace in our time of need.

Doing a Bible study?

Here is a guide we have prepared for you: the passages in order, questions for the group, and room to write.

  1. The pastor said that unbelief and disobedience go hand in hand throughout Hebrews, that you act in accordance with what you truly believe. Where have you seen that connection play out in your own life, either in a positive or a negative direction?
  2. The sermon pointed out that the Exodus generation had good news preached to them, just as we do, but the word did not profit them because it was not united with faith. What does it look like practically to hear scripture in a way that is united with faith rather than just taking it in as information?

0:00 Good morning, everybody. How are you? It's good to see you this morning. Would you stand up with me and we'll we'll sing together from Psalm one forty seven. Sing out your thanks to the Lord.
0:11 Sing praises to our God and we'd love to do just that.
0:56 Great thou art. When the sings my soul, my savior got to be. How great thou art, how great thou art. When through the woods and forest glades, I wander and hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees. When I looked down from lofty mountain grandeur and see them brood and feel the gentle waves.
1:33 And then sings my soul, my savior God to me. How great thou art. How great thou art. And sings my soul, my savior God to me. How great thou art.
1:53 How great thou art.
1:56 And when I think that I've got his son not sparing, send him to die, I scarce can take it in.
2:07 Are, That on that cross, my burden gladly bearing, he bled and died. Didn't take away my seed and sings my soul, my savior got to me. How great thou art, how great thou art. And sings my soul, my savior got to me.
2:58 Amen. Y'all can have a seat I have a few, is this thing on? Can y'all hear me? Yes. I have a few announcements this morning, and there a couple other folks have announcements this morning.
3:10 First of all, Monday nights at first beat.
3:12 Yes. We are on tomorrow part two of the power of words. When words go bad, what do we do then? Words go bad. Tomorrow, meal music message and 06:00.
3:24 06:00, meal music message, Monday nights, First Beat. If you would like to give to First Beat through Old Bills, you may do that. That's coming up first full weekend in September. If you'd like to, we use it for our local benevolence fund which goes hand in hand with the next guy that's gonna make an announcement. Would you come on up, Chuck?
3:43 Chuck Fidroff is the director of the Good Samaritan Mission.
3:47 Yeah. And I just every year I How many people know there's a mission in Jackson Hole? Yay. Almost everybody. You guys support it as a church.
3:55 People come over there and cook a meal at the mission once in a while. You know, we'd have 30 beds for men and five for women. We did over 10,000 meals every year since I've been there. Breakfast and dinner seven days a week, three sixty five days a year and lunch on weekends. So a lot of statistics and stuff going on.
4:17 We have food boxes. We do a food program for the little kids over at the children's learning center. 40 bags a week I take over there during the school year to make sure hungry kids get the food that they need because they've been identified as food deprived. We've got a food program where people can come to the mission and get food, a food box and we feed people that way, which is really good last year and pretty much every year over a 100,000 pounds of food is going through that place. Lot of missions have a problem with getting food into the mission.
4:50 We have a problem giving it out. This this community is so benevolent with good food and everything. You'll see in the bulletins a little pamphlet here. It's got your name, your address, your email address. If you'd like to sign up for our email list, I do that monthly, and it'll link to some of the the newsletters list.
5:10 Or if you wanna put your snail mail address, then you'll get seven mailings a year, three newsletters, and four please for support. And do that, and you can know what's going on at the mission. You'll see the story of lives change. What is what do I mean stories of lives change? Well, we had a man named Steven.
5:26 He came to the mission and he's working now as a manager at a local restore. Where did he come from? He came out of jail. He had an addiction problem. He got a DUI, ended up in jail, came to the mission, went through our program.
5:39 I counseled with him weekly. He did an online course. He finished it successfully, and now he's he got a job at Dollar Tree and then he got another job as a manager. He does both of those and he he was still our laundry dude while he was staying there. Now he's married, has got a wife, and she's supporting her.
5:59 That's what the mission does. It changes lives. It changes lives. It helps people move forward with their life. People come into the mission.
6:08 They can get two night stay, emergency stay. Anybody can do that as long as they're clean and sober and focused. The other program we have is the drug alcohol program where people can stay up to a year. For the first month, I want them counseling with me going through a program, not getting money in their pocket because sometimes that's a problem. And then after that first month, then they're gonna require work, and everybody else is gonna be required to work.
6:33 It's a working mission. We help people move forward. It's not a flophouse. It's a place where people go to get better. And that's what you'll support.
6:41 And one of the things I want you to support, I know you guys are doing old bills, but it's our biggest fundraiser of the year. So I I want you to remember this. Good Samaritan mission, old bills fun run. Good Samaritan Mission, Old Bills Fun Run. Old Bills Fun Run, what?
6:59 Good Samaritan Mission.
7:00 Alright. Thank you.
7:01 Alright. Thank you, Chuck. Appreciate what you do, man. Sorry, Blake. First piece campout is still going on.
7:10 So, there's some empty seats here because there's some full like benches around the campfire up there. So, pray for them. Oh, gracious. Not my thing but I did go up last night. We did sit around and play the guitar and have fun singing some songs.
7:23 It was fun but they're they're still up there having their own little church service. First B North this morning. If you would like to help, if you want an opportunity to share the gospel on a regular basis with receptive community, Awana is starting up soon. September 9 will be the first night for Awana. We'll have the game circle back down on the floor and we will start this great kids program because kids matter to God.
7:50 And if you wanna do that, you can talk to Dan or Dancey Tolleson, and they'll get you signed up and hooked up with the right in the right place. And if you don't see them or don't know them, talk to me and I'll get you in touch with somebody if you wanna be a part of Awana. We have started another group rather than having Cubbies, Sparks, and Truth and Training, we also have a younger group now called Puggles. Puggles? Puggles is for two to three year olds which is going to be a lot of fun.
8:18 Community Bible study is starting up this fall and when is the first time? Fourth week of September. After we're back in the routine of getting school started, I heard a commercial last night around the campfire for this. It's we're looking forward to Galatians is what we're gonna be studying. There'll be two different options, a morning and an evening option.
8:41 So, whichever one works best for you, it's coed. You can come as a couple if you like. That was the main thing that KC was saying last night. It was really nice for her. So, Galatians, it is a very intentional straight up Bible study.
8:53 It's great. Community Bible study works. Connect hour happens between services when the preacher closes his mouth and bows his head and amen. Y'all can go down and have some coffee and for all other announcements, it should, they should be in the bulletin. Am I forgetting somebody or something?
9:10 Kyle Knutson. What? Number four? Oh, fantastic. Annual?
9:18 Mike has been various places. You say where it's gonna be. Is that it? Okay. Mike Yockel.
9:26 Very so September 4 is the annual men's meeting that's a horseshoe tournament. We have played other games too, but it's it's always a horseshoe tournament is the thing. So it's gonna be September 4, what time? 05:00. 05:00.
9:41 Alright. And there'll be food, assume? Okay. Oh, yeah. Alright.
9:46 Men, stand around. Parker. Fantastic. Thank you. September 4, Mike Yockel Park Men's Horseshoe Tournament, and I think that that's it.
9:55 Y'all would stand and greet one another, we'll bring you back together with a peppy little song.
13:48 God, can't help but think when we are singing this song and win before the throne, we stand in you complete. And, God, we are work in progress right now. That's that's what we are. We have not arrived. But, God, you are making us more like you.
14:05 And I pray that you would continue the good work that you have started in us, would you? We ask this. In Christ's name, amen.
14:31 Sorrow comes to steal the joy I love. Brokenness and pain is all I know. I won't be ashamed. I won't be shaken. My fear doesn't stay.
14:49 My fear doesn't stand a chance when I stand in your love. My fear doesn't stand a chance when I stand in your love. My fear doesn't stand a chance when I stand in your love. Shame no longer has a place to hide. I am not captive to the lies.
15:26 I'm not afraid to leave my past behind or I won't be shaken. I won't be shaken. My fear doesn't stand the chance when I stand in your love. My fear doesn't stand the chance when I stand in your love. My fear doesn't stand the chance when I stand in your love.
16:00 And there's power that there's power that can break off every chain. There's power that in your love. I fear doesn't stand the chance when I stand in your love.
17:02 From second Timothy, all scripture is God breathed. It's useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. That's the good work that God planned in advance for us to do. It's saying, me hear your words.
17:31 Let me hear your words above all of voices above all the distractions in this world.
17:49 Let's sing that again,
17:50 shall we? Let's hear your words, Lord. Love offers more than anything else in this world. Your words give life. Your words words give us life that's never ending.
18:49 Your words bring us love that never fails. Everything else will fade away.
20:57 Amen. Would y'all pray with me? Y'all can have a seat out there. God almighty, we thank you this morning that we have breath and lungs to praise you and I thank you for gifts that you've given this church. Thank you that you've what you've given each of us individually to collectively.
21:15 We're very strong. Lord and I pray that we would be a strong witnesses community. So, lord, we come to the time where we take up an offering and we do that. Lord, it's completely free will but we want to share you with other people. That we know how.
21:34 This is a way. Lord, would you do your will and your way this morning? I pray that you'd take these offerings and that you would bless and multiply them and that you do your work here in this valley but lord to the very ends of the earth. I know we have people here from other countries and we have people from other communities and we want lord to be a blessing to them. We want to fill them to overflow into before they go back home.
22:02 Lord, I pray that we would sense a oneness in your spirit and a unity and purpose. Lord, may we advance the gospel together. In Jesus name, amen. Amen. Children's Church is starting right now.
25:02 Downstairs. Wow. Let's just play that again.
25:09 So,
25:14 we're in a study. It's a long study. It's a study of the New Testament and we're going forward and we're up to Hebrews four one through 13 and the first 11 verses of this are probably the most difficult that I have encountered in the time that I've been here. As far as grammatic, grammatically speaking, this is the most difficult text that I think I've hit so far. And so I did a lot of study this week.
25:38 I do a lot every week, but I really did a lot of study this week. And when I got here this morning, I told Carl, I said, I know that I know what this passage says. I have thoroughly processed it. I feel pretty confident in that. I have no idea what's going to come out.
25:53 Once I get up there. So, y'all are on the journey with me this morning. I I borrowed Warren Weirsby I I like Warren Weirsby but he he always all of his commentaries are two word titles and it's be something. Be this or be that and for Hebrews, it's be confident and I think that's a little bit because a lot of people think Hebrews is a very scary book because it has several warnings but the warnings are so that you may be confident and so, I borrowed his title headings to give you a little bit of structure to hang what the scripture actually says on it and I think it's good. The first part is let us take heed.
26:35 This section is from three seven to four thirteen, which is too much to preach in one session for most Americans, alright? It's just not what we usually do is go this far but I did this last week. I'll read it and try not to preach it again, okay? But let us take heed was last week. I also want to read it all the way through so that you can see how many times the theme is repeated.
27:02 It's just good to hear that. So, let us take heed is the first part. Therefore, just as the Holy Spirit says, it gives the Holy Spirit credit for this. Therefore, just as the Holy Spirit says, today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as when they provoked me. God almighty is speaking this.
27:21 Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as when they provoked me as in the day of trial in the wilderness where your fathers tried me by testing me and saw my works for forty years. That's the Exodus generation. Therefore, I was angry with that generation and said, they always go astray in their heart and they did not know my ways and I swore in my wrath that they shall not enter my rest. So, take care, brethren. Brothers and sisters, that there not be anyone of you in anyone of you an evil and unbelieving heart that falls away from the living God.
28:00 He's using an example from the Old Testament and saying, don't let this happen to you. Take care brothers and sisters that there not be in anyone of you. That's a repeated theme for the new section today. In anyone of you, an evil, unbelieving heart that falls away from the living God but encourage one another day after day as long as it is still called today so that no one of you will be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin because it is deceitful. It's inherently deceitful To walk away from the living God towards sin.
28:36 What are, what's, what is sin's promise? It's got to be deceitful because it's not as good as God. For we have become partakers of Christ, if we hold fast the beginning of our assurance firm until the end while it is said. Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as when they provoked me for who provoked him when they had heard indeed, did not all those who came out of Egypt led by Moses, the author of Hebrews is asking us, rhetorical questions all in a row here and with whom was he got angry for forty years? Was it not with those who sinned?
29:11 Whose bodies fell in the wilderness? They didn't believe. They didn't put their confidence and they didn't put their trust in him and they were swayed and they grumbled and they murmured and they were called out to sin. And to whom did he swear that they would not enter his rest but to those who were disobedient. So, unbelief and disobedience have come up several times so far.
29:33 Those are themes that will come out again today. So, we see then that they were not able to enter in because of unbelief and their unbelief led to disobedience. If you believe, then, you act in accordance with that belief and actually, I might put it the other way. You act in accordance with that which you truly believe. So, unbelief and disobedience go hand in hand.
29:54 Throughout scripture but especially right here in Hebrews. So, the next part for for this pastor in front of all of y'all is let us fear. That's literally what it says. It's Favas, fear. Let us fear.
30:08 Now, I've heard and I've heard it from this stage. I I might not have been the one that said it but I I have heard it that in the Bible, there are promises and God says, fear not. 365 times. There's one. Actually, 366 times.
30:20 I've heard this several times. They're not that many times. It does say fear not. I don't want you to to fear unrighteously. I don't want you to fear the wrong things but when angels come and they appear to people and say, fear not for I bring you good tidings of great joy or fear not.
30:35 Fear not. Fear not is the standard response that or the standard thing that angels say when they bring a message of good news. It's fear not because they're the dazzling brightness of their angelic presence usually scares people. So, fear not, fear not, fear not and there are lots of things that we are not to fear. My fear doesn't stand a chance when I stand in your love but this is a direct command.
30:58 It's a hoardatory subjunctive if you care. Let us fear. Let us fear. Let us fear. That's the whole section.
31:07 So, this section is verses one through eight. Therefore, based on everything that I just read, let us take heed. Therefore, let us fear. What is it that we're supposed to fear? God says so often, fear not.
31:24 He doesn't say it three sixty six times by the way in the Bible but that's just one of those popular things that gets going and it's around the world before you know it. Let us pay closer attention to that which we've already heard, right? Let us fear if and that is a big if. Let us fear if while a promise remains of entering his rest. So, let us fear if there is actually a rest that's still out there lying out there.
31:54 While a promise of rest of entering his rest remains, that anyone of you may seem to have come short of it. Imma go back. I didn't put it in the slides but Blake, three, twelve, and 13, Imma go back to, Imma call out for it in a few minutes. If you want to find that. Do that.
32:14 Therefore, let us fear. Now, The Us could be the writers of Hebrews, the writer of Hebrews has already used a plural for themselves a couple of times already. It could be just let us, the writers of Hebrews, the reason that we are writing this letter to y'all is because we fear that there might be some among you who have turned away from Jesus and are going back into the Old Testament covenant, old covenant ways of doing things. So, let us fear. Could be that and it's dramatically possible but I think that it is let us who are true believers within the faith, who have put our trust in Christ, let us all, let us, woah.
32:57 Thanks, Blake. Perfect. I'm going to go with let us be in let us, the body of Christ. Those who have latched on and believed in faith and want to persist and go with him. Take care brothers and sisters that there not be anyone of you with an evil unbelieving heart.
33:18 This is the same thing repeated again, okay? This was from the let us take heed and it's has said, we as a whole, the body of Christ, do not want for anyone that is hanging out here and found in our midst or within our families. We don't want for anyone to have an evil unbelieving heart. So, encourage one another day after day. Encourage one another in the faith.
33:44 Up in Hebrews 10, it'll say, stir one another up in the love and good works. Come together in full assurance of faith, confident, be confident. We're supposed be safe but encourage one another day after day as long as it's still called today. There's time. Today is the day.
34:00 Paul would say, today is the day of salvation. We have today. We don't have yesterday. We're not guaranteed tomorrow. So, encourage one another day after day as long as it's still called today so that none of you will be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin.
34:14 Alright. Therefore, let us fear then. So, it's either the writers of Hebrews as the plural or it's us as the body of Christ, those who have believed the message and are persevering and persisting in it. Let us fear if while a promise of entering God's rest remains and it does, that will be proven in the next few verses that anyone of you may seem to have come short of it and the theme there is it's hard because man judges on the outward appearance and God judges the heart. He does say that if Christ has saved you, he will transform you and so, this is a place where some churches get hung up and examining each other's sinful behavior so much that they get all up in each other's business.
35:06 There's a good way to do that and there's a bad way to do that. It's fearful though to see someone walking that's not in accordance. In their time, it was the temptation to go back to the old covenant stuff. In our time, I think it's the temptation to go into licentious behavior and no law, anti nomianism. Anyone of you may seem to have come short of this rest.
35:33 For indeed, we have had good news preached to us just as they also. Actually, this word is Euangelion. It's it is we have been gospelized. We have been evangelized. We have been told the good news.
35:47 Just as they had also. For me as a child, my probably my most persistent question about Old Testament, New Testament stuff. We got a pretty even smattering of Old Testament versus New Testament. I have preached mostly from the New Testament since I've been here. My most persistent question was, how did they get saved if Jesus hadn't died on that cross yet?
36:11 And that was the hardest thing and this verse says that they were evangelized just as we are. Now, we have to look back on Christ in much the same way as they had to look forward to him. They were placing their trust in God to provide a Messiah, a savior. For indeed, we have had good news preached to us just as they also. Can I ask you a question?
36:33 Have you all had good news preached at you before? Good. That's encouraging. I try to do that every single week. Indeed, we have had good news preached to us or at us before just as they did also.
36:49 So, when Moses announced to Pharaoh, hey, let my people let my people let my people let my people go and then eventually, it comes to happen and he stands before the whole assembly of Israel. They might have heard about it in the news but when he said, we're leaving. We're getting out of here. Taking you from slavery. We're going into a land of promise.
37:10 This is what lies before us. Was that an unconditional promise? No. Apparently not. It was the promise for those who would believe.
37:25 For those who believed, they entered into that land of promise but for those who didn't, today ended. There was a time, an appropriate time. God knows the time. And they passed that point of being able to make a decision. It was passed.
37:47 For indeed, we've had good news preached to us just as they also but the word that they heard did not profit them. Why? Why did it not profit them? God's word is able to accomplish everything he intended for it and he puts it out there and it's a very real invitation. Why is it then that it did not profit them and it did not profit them because it was not united by faith in those who heard.
38:12 They didn't believe it. Pistis is the word right there. Pistis is faith, belief, trust, confidence, fidelity, or faithfulness. It can mean those two. So, faith, belief, trust, and confidence is kind of the front side of that.
38:27 That's the belief section but then, fidelity and faithfulness is the action that follows that belief. Pistis, excuse both ways. Indeed, we have had good preach, good news preached at us or to us just as they also but the word they heard did not profit them because it was not united by faith in those who heard. For we who have believed enter that rest. We who have believed enter that rest.
38:57 Now, this is going to say grammatically. It seems very odd that he that the author would choose this for we would, we who have believed enter that rest just as he said, I swore in my wrath that they shall not enter my rest. So, it is setting up and we often like to say, it's not an us and them. It is an us and them. In this case, it very much is we who have believed and they shall not enter my rest and they shall not enter my rest.
39:26 For we who have believed enter that rest just as he has said, as I swore in my wrath, they shall not enter my rest. Now, and take heed, it quoted Psalm 95 over and over and over again, only the second half of Psalm 95. The difficult portion of unbelief. And again, it's quoted, although his works were finished from the foundation of the world. Oh my goodness.
39:47 This is opening up a can of worms right here. God's works, he had this gospel plan and he laid it out there. He knew it. Everything that is in the Old Testament that was a shadow of it as Hebrews will call it later or a type or a copy of what was to come was all pointing towards Jesus in the Old Testament and everything in history since him has been pointing back. God's works though, his creative works were finished from the foundation of the world for he has said somewhere, concerning the seventh day.
40:21 Now, they didn't have chapter and verse numbers back then and so the somewhere to us just sounds funny. It's like, well, somewhere. It's Genesis two if you're looking for it. He has said somewhere concerning the seventh day and God rested on the seventh day from all his works. So, every other day when it said and it was morning and it was evening, the first day.
40:42 It was morning and it was evening, The second day, it was morning and it was evening, third day. It says that all the way through until it gets to God's rest and when it says, God's rest is, it says in it, on the seventh day, God rested and it doesn't say anything about evening as if it's an open time still. Like I said, can of worms. What the implications are of that in this passage, it's about the rest. Taking heed and fearing that someone might fall short of it from unbelief and disobedience and again, in this passage, they shall not enter my rest, my is emphasized there.
41:24 Therefore, since it remains for some to enter it, the promise of God still stands that the people of God will enter his rest. That is talking about heaven but it also can be talking about a contentedness of heart like Augustine said that our hearts are restless until we find our rest in him. There remains a rest for some to enter it and those who formally had good news preached to them failed to enter. Since it remains for some to enter it and those who formally had good news preached to them failed to enter because of disobedience. Already has listed unbelief and the following correspondent action is disobedience.
42:12 He, that's good. The Holy Spirit. Again, fixes a certain day, today. Now, last week, I said, I think 19 times. Today, if you hear his voice, don't harden your hearts because your choice is either accept what he says and believe and then allow him to work out those actions in your life or reject what he says.
42:37 Harden your hearts and fall back into deceitful sin. So, the Holy Spirit again fixes a certain day today saying through David, so the dual authorship of scripture we see here like we did last week. After so long a time, just as he had said before, today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts. For if Joshua had given them rest and this is presupposing the next argument that the Hebrews are going to make. Well, yeah, Moses didn't go in but some people did.
43:08 Joshua and Caleb remember those two spies? They went in and they said, we can take this land. It's a good land. It's flowing with milk and honey. God says, we got this.
43:15 We got this. Come on. Let's go. But the 10 other spies said, nope, they're too much. We're like grasshoppers in their sight.
43:21 There's not a chance. We don't have a chance. We're not going to go. Unbelief and disobedience. God said, take the land they didn't do.
43:29 So, some might point to and say, but Joshua, so this is where the author of Hebrews brings up Joshua. For if Joshua had given them rest, then he, the Holy Spirit, would not have spoken of another day after that. Now, this is where a timeline comes in handy. Do you know your Old Testament timeline? It's something like this.
43:49 Moses Exodus fourteen forty six or so BC. Joshua though after Moses is buried and he can't enter into the promised land. Joshua does lead them into conquer the land of Canaan. So, that's a forty year span between those two. David is king in ten ten BC.
44:09 I threw Isaiah in there just for good measure but David is the one who's writing this. So, the argument here is that Joshua is 1,400 or so and David is four hundred years later. The Holy Spirit wouldn't still be saying in Psalm 95. Today, if you hear his voice, don't harden your hearts. If it truly were not open that you might enter the rest of God.
44:35 Jesus's birth, the cross, thirty years apart there and then there were Hebrews is written. That gives you a little scope. If Joshua had given them rest. Now, there was some rest from the war, rest from the labors, rest from they did enter into that promised land by faith in an almighty and conquering God. They put their trust in him.
44:58 They did do that but he says, there remains a rest even beyond that physical temporal rest. If Joshua had given them rest, then he, the Holy Spirit would not have spoken of a day after now. The next section is let's be diligent. It's going to take a while before I get to this command right here or auditory subjunctive. Let us be diligent.
45:19 So, this is the conclusion that's drawn out of all that has gone before in this passage and we're going just nine through 13 right here. So, there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God. The word Sabbath rest here, it's equating God's open ended rest from his creative works. It's opening that up for the people of God. There remains out there still a Sabbath rest and that wasn't even a word till the writer of Hebrews wrote this.
45:50 There wasn't a good word for what this writer. So, meant. So, they wrote that word. Started to be used after that when this got into circulation but this is the first instance we know of. So, there remains a Sabbath rest, something holy about this rest, something godly about it for the people of God, the Sabbath rest, for the one who has entered his rest has himself also rested from all his labors.
46:16 Just as God did from his. This is in some ways pointing back to that old covenant that was a requirement of all the things that you had to do and the way of Christ is to say, that stuff pointed me to my need for you. I seek to enter the rest that you offer God by your way. By the blood of Jesus. By the perfect sacrifice.
46:43 In the next few chapters, we'll get into that even more. This book is an amazingly intricate. For the one who has entered his rest as himself also rested from his works as God did from his. Therefore, let us be diligent. Now, that sounds a whole lot like let us work hard, doesn't it?
47:01 It's talking about entering into a rest but it's let us be diligent to enter that rest so that no one will fall. The collective nature of this book, it is about us gathering together and encouraging one another and stirring one another up in the love and good works and into greater and deeper faith in Christ as the way, the truth, and the life. It's got the highest possible Christology. It's better than angels, better than Moses, better than Joshua, he's better than the sacrificial system, He's better than the old covenant. He's better than all this.
47:34 So, let's do this. Let us, the hoard of swords, hoardatory, subjective is a first person plural. Meaning, we, let us gather together and do this. Let us be diligent then to enter into that rest, to put all of our faith in Christ and in Christ alone so that no one will fall. If we start to take credit for, if we start to to get off of Jesus Christ being the sufficient savior if we get off of that and it starts to come back on us that we are it and we can do this and we get off of the good old gospel way, everything else falls short.
48:17 We don't want anyone to fail as long as we're pointing people to Christ and not to self and not to the Christian industrial complex for that matter. Therefore, let us be diligent to enter that rest I cannot pay for my own sin. Christ will you. Please take this from me. First John one nine says, if you are confessing your sins, he's faithful and just be forgiven your sins and cleansing you from all Therefore, let us be diligent enter that rest so that no one will fall.
48:54 Through following the same example of those Exodus generation of disobedience. So, how are we going to do it? This is the next little section, the very end, just twelve and thirteen. These two verses are very helpful and I've heard these verses preached a long time but separated from context and that they're good. These are some of those that are really good no matter where you see em, how you see em.
49:17 The word of God. That's how we're going to do it. The word of God is living and it's active and it's sharper than any two edged sword. That's a little Roman short sword, double edged dagger. It is sharper than any two edged sword and it pierces as far as the division of soul and spirit, both joints and marrow and it's able to judge the thoughts and the intentions of the heart.
49:46 Have you ever read through scripture and you thought, well, that's the good guy right there. That's the good guy and then the good guy fails. You think, well, I was with him. Unless you were thinking about Jesus, that wasn't the good guy. Everybody else falls short and all point to Jesus.
50:04 Your intentions of your heart will be uncovered if you will study this word. The word of God is living. It's active. It's sharper than any two edged sword and it's piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, joints and marrow, able to judge the thoughts and the intentions of the heart. Hebrews two one says, therefore, for this reason, we must pay much closer attention to that which we have heard, what we already have read and know, study it.
50:30 Get down to the end of it. Why? So that we do not drift away from it. If we in AA, they often say that if you get a head full of AA, you will not have booze in your belly. If you get a head full of scripture, just keep on.
50:48 God will transform you. If it's mixed with belief, you have to believe. It has to be joined with or united with faith but we must pay closer attention to what we've heard so that we do not drift away from it for if the word that was spoken through angels proved unalterable and it did and every transgression and disobedience received a just penalty and it does. It's either going to be the just penalty paid for by your own death and separation from God or it will be paid for by the blood of Jesus. Received through faith.
51:29 Everyone in this room will be either justly condemned or mercifully forgiven. If the word of spoken through angels proved unalterable and every transgression and disobedience received the just penalty then how will we escape if we neglect so great a salvation. This is the way. After it was first spoken through the Lord, it was confirmed to us by those who heard. God also testifying with them by signs and wonders and various miracles and gifts of the Holy Spirit according to his own will.
51:58 Let's pay more attention to that which we have already heard. In verse 13, carries on the theme of the word of God and there is no creature hidden from his sight but all things are open and all things are laid bare to the eyes of him. That's God with whom we have to do. It's not like you're going to sneak by. Unnoticed, right?
52:23 He's God almighty. He knows. He knows your heart and he's given us a diagnostic tool. That is transformer. It's not just diagnosis.
52:32 It's prescriptive too. He's given us his word. So, there's nothing hidden from his side. All things are open and laid bare to the eyes of him with whom we have to do. I think that's the end of that section.
52:45 I got a little preview next week. So, it doesn't just stop there but I didn't think I'd have time and I do. So, here we go. Therefore, since all of that, therefore, since we have a great high priest, praise God. We have a great high priest.
53:00 All of this has been pointing to Jesus. The word of God is all about Jesus. Old and New Testament. Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the son of God, let us hold fast our confession. What's interesting about this, Jesus, the son of God, is when it said, if Joshua had given rest, for us, that's two different things.
53:18 We'd never think Josh or Joshua and Jesus were the same. They're the same word. For the Hebrews, if they read, if if Jesus had given rest or if Joshua had given rest, they read these the same. Yeshua, Joshua, Jesus. Same exact word.
53:33 Looks like it. He's saying that, yes, those did enter through Yeshua, Joshua. They did but if he had given the rest that this coming Jesus would, then, it wouldn't still remain but it does still remain and it is found in one place and this is the place. Therefore, since we have a great high priest who passed through the heavens, Jesus, the son of God, not to be confused with Jesus, I mean, Joshua, the son of none, okay? Joshua, Jesus, sorry, the son of God.
54:02 Let us hold fast our confession. Oh man, amen. This will probably come back out next week. Let us hold fast our confession. Grab on to that which you believe and live it for we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses.
54:17 If you feel like I'm not strong enough to go ahead and live this Christian life. Nobody is. But Christ. God imputes his righteousness to you and as you will submit your will, he will transform you. For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weakness but we have one who has been tempted in all the things just as we are.
54:42 Yet, he was without sin. He had a perfect record and therefore, let us draw near. Let us, again, horridory subjective for all of us. Let us all draw near with confidence where? To the throne of grace because no, you don't deserve it but God is still offering it and he's offering it by the blood of Jesus.
55:02 Place your faith which is always a gift from God. Place your faith in him and see what he will do. Therefore, let us draw near with confidence to the throne of grace so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need. Would y'all stand? I'm going ask Carl and Florine to come back up.
55:27 God, I thank you for what your word said. I I do wish lord that I was able to make it stick. I pray that we would take it seriously and that we would be vigilant, vigilant, and that we would diligent and vigilant and that we would fear if anyone just takes it lightly and does not put the little measure of faith that you've given in Jesus. God, may we live our lives in such a way that others are drawn to you. Would you do your will and your way in our life?
56:03 In Jesus name, amen.
56:17 There's a peace I've come to know. Though my heart and flesh may fail, there's a nager for my soul. I can say that it is well. Jesus is overcome. When the darkness breaks to light and the shadows disappear and my faith shall be my eyes.
58:02 Jesus is overcome, and the great is over. My God. All on my knees and rise. I will rise
1:00:27 Amen. The last verse we covered just in Hebrews four thirteen, nothing in all creation is hidden from God's sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give accounts. A different translation but if there is one of you out there, I'm I'm I'm with the author of Hebrews and let us fear. If there's anyone of you out there that seems that they may have fallen short of it.
1:00:49 If you feel like you might fall short of, would you please come talk to me? Would you please come talk to their brothers and sisters all over this church that are signed on and know that Jesus is the Christ and they can point you back 9,000 different ways to that one way. Would you let me know? There's nothing that is hidden from God's side. Everything is laid bare.
1:01:10 None of us stand a chance without Jesus. So, if you feel like you may have fallen short, would you let me know? In Jesus name, lord, I pray that you give strength and courage. Amen.
