Ephesians 2 Jews and Gentiles no longer foreigners and strangers but fellow citizens, building analogy with Jesus as cornerstone
1 You were made alive when you were dead in transgressions and sins,
2 in which you once walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in the children of disobedience;
3 among whom we also all once lived in the lusts of our flesh, doing the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, even as the rest.
4 But God, being rich in mercy, for his great love with which he loved us,
5 even when we were dead through our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved),
6 and raised us up with him, and made us to sit with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus,
7 that in the ages to come he might show the exceeding riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus;
8 for by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God,
9 not of works, that no one would boast.
10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared before that we would walk in them.
11 Therefore remember that once you, the Gentiles in the flesh, who are called “uncircumcision” by that which is called “circumcision”, (in the flesh, made by hands);
12 that you were at that time separate from Christ, alienated from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of the promise, having no hope and without God in the world.
13 But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off are made near in the blood of Christ.
14 For he is our peace, who made both one, and broke down the middle wall of partition,
15 having abolished in his flesh the hostility, the law of commandments contained in ordinances, that he might create in himself one new man of the two, making peace;
16 and might reconcile them both in one body to God through the cross, having killed the hostility thereby.
17 He came and preached peace to you who were far off and to those who were near.
18 For through him we both have our access in one Spirit to the Father.
19 So then you are no longer strangers and foreigners, but you are fellow citizens with the saints, and of the household of God,
20 being built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the chief cornerstone;
21 in whom the whole building, fitted together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord;
22 in whom you also are built together for a habitation of God in the Spirit.

Ephesians 4
outer self is wasting away but inner self is being renewed day by day, maturity measured in fullness
1 I therefore, the prisoner in the Lord, beg you to walk worthily of the calling with which you were called,
2 with all lowliness and humility, with patience, bearing with one another in love;
3 being eager to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.
4 There is one body, and one Spirit, even as you also were called in one hope of your calling;
5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism,
6 one God and Father of all, who is over all, and through all, and in us all.
7 But to each one of us was the grace given according to the measure of the gift of Christ.
8 Therefore he says, “When he ascended on high, he led captivity captive, and gave gifts to men.”
9 Now this, “He ascended”, what is it but that he also first descended into the lower parts of the earth?
10 He who descended is the one who also ascended far above all the heavens, that he might fill all things.
11 He gave some to be apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, shepherds and teachers;
12 for the perfecting of the saints, to the work of serving, to the building up of the body of Christ;
13 until we all attain to the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a full grown man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ;
14 that we may no longer be children, tossed back and forth and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in craftiness, after the wiles of error;
15 but speaking truth in love, we may grow up in all things into him, who is the head, Christ;
16 from whom all the body, being fitted and knit together through that which every joint supplies, according to the working in measure of each individual part, makes the body increase to the building up of itself in love.
17 This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that you no longer walk as the rest of the Gentiles also walk, in the futility of their mind,
18 being darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God, because of the ignorance that is in them, because of the hardening of their hearts;
19 who having become callous gave themselves up to lust, to work all uncleanness with greediness.
20 But you did not learn Christ that way;
21 if indeed you heard him, and were taught in him, even as truth is in Jesus:
22 that you put away, as concerning your former way of life, the old man, that grows corrupt after the lusts of deceit;
23 and that you be renewed in the spirit of your mind,
24 and put on the new man, who in the likeness of God has been created in righteousness and holiness of truth.
25 Therefore putting away falsehood, speak truth each one with his neighbor. For we are members of one another.
26 “Be angry, and don’t sin.” Don’t let the sun go down on your wrath,
27 and don’t give place to the devil.
28 Let him who stole steal no more; but rather let him labor, producing with his hands something that is good, that he may have something to give to him who has need.
29 Let no corrupt speech proceed out of your mouth, but only what is good for building others up as the need may be, that it may give grace to those who hear.
30 Don’t grieve the Holy Spirit of God, in whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.
31 Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, outcry, and slander, be put away from you, with all malice.
32 And be kind to one another, tender hearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you.

Recap
The message in order, in a few minutes of reading.
Pastor Will walked through Ephesians 3:14-21, Paul's prayer for the church, showing how the reasons Paul gives for praying reach all the way back through the letter to everything God has already done for his people. The sermon followed the prayer section by section, from the strengthening of the inner being through to the closing doxology about God's glory in the church forever.
What was said
Paul opens with "for this reason," and Pastor Will pointed back to where that thread begins. Everything in the letter up to this point, being brought near by Christ's blood, adopted into God's family, built together as his dwelling, is the reason Paul kneels and prays. Without prayer, he said, what power does knowledge have? The prayer is Paul's response to everything he has already taught.
The first thing Paul asks for is that God would strengthen the inner being by his Spirit. Pastor Will drew on Paul's own words from 2 Corinthians, that the outer self is wasting away while the inner self is renewed day by day. He pointed to people in the room whose bodies are failing but whose inner being is visibly being renewed, to the point of sharing the gospel with their own doctors. The strength Paul prays for is not optional equipment. It is what makes it possible to love enemies, resist temptation, endure hardship, and speak truth to others.
Paul then prays that Christ would dwell in their hearts through faith, and Pastor Will pressed on why that would need to be prayed if Christ already indwells a believer at conversion. The answer he gave is that this is a prayer for a more powerful, more present dwelling, and that it is directly tied to faith. As faith increases, so does that presence. He brought in Galatians 2:20 to show the connection Paul makes between living faith and Christ living in us.
To illustrate what dwelling looks like over time, Pastor Will described looking at a rundown foreclosure with foundation problems and moisture damage. He used it as a picture of what we look like when Christ first purchases us. He owns the house from day one, but the renovation takes a lifetime. Rooms get worked on one at a time. The question he left was whether we are as concerned for what God is doing in our inner rooms as we are for the outer things we spend our energy on.
Paul prays that believers would have strength to comprehend the length, width, height, and depth of Christ's love, and Pastor Will noted that the comprehension is collective. It is "with all the saints," not a private project. He said that is part of why the church gathers, because we can see in each other what we cannot yet see in ourselves. He also worked through the two images Paul uses, rooted like a vine and grounded like a building, connecting the first to Jesus's words in John 15 about remaining in him and bearing fruit, and the second back to the temple analogy already running through the letter.
The prayer builds toward fullness, being filled with all the fullness of God. Pastor Will described it as every dimension of God's love filling the believer, and said all of the previous petitions, strength, faith, knowledge, lead to this. The grace already described in chapters one and two as lavished on us is the source of all of it.
The closing doxology in verses 20 and 21 was where Pastor Will landed the whole message. God is able to do far more than we ask or think, and yet we limit ourselves through lack of faith, lack of prayer, and the junk we have not let him clear out. He said the purpose of all Paul has prayed for is God's glory in the church, in Christ, and across every generation. He pointed specifically to those serving in children's and youth ministry as people already living that out, and called anyone without someone younger to pour into to go find one.
Doing a Bible study?
Here is a guide we have prepared for you: the passages in order, questions for the group, and room to write.
- Pastor William talked about how Paul prays for our inner being rather than our outer being, and mentioned people in the room whose outer being is wasting away but whose inner being is being renewed to the point of sharing the gospel with doctors and nurses. What does it look like in your own life right now to prioritize your inner being over your outer being?
- Pastor William used the analogy of a run-down foreclosure house to describe how Christ purchases us and then begins a renovation project, working on rooms we haven't let him into yet. Are there rooms in your life you have been keeping him out of, and what has made it hard to let him in?
