Romans 5 opening encouraging word read before worship
1 Being therefore justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ;
2 through whom we also have our access by faith into this grace in which we stand. We rejoice in hope of the glory of God.
3 Not only this, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces perseverance;
4 and perseverance, proven character; and proven character, hope:
5 and hope doesn’t disappoint us, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.
6 For while we were yet weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly.
7 For one will hardly die for a righteous man. Yet perhaps for a righteous person someone would even dare to die.
8 But God commends his own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
9 Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we will be saved from God’s wrath through him.
10 For if, while we were enemies, we were reconciled to God through the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we will be saved by his life.
11 Not only so, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received the reconciliation.
12 Therefore as sin entered into the world through one man, and death through sin; and so death passed to all men, because all sinned.
13 For until the law, sin was in the world; but sin is not charged when there is no law.
14 Nevertheless death reigned from Adam until Moses, even over those whose sins weren’t like Adam’s disobedience, who is a foreshadowing of him who was to come.
15 But the free gift isn’t like the trespass. For if by the trespass of the one the many died, much more did the grace of God, and the gift by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, abound to the many.
16 The gift is not as through one who sinned: for the judgment came by one to condemnation, but the free gift came of many trespasses to justification.
17 For if by the trespass of the one, death reigned through the one; so much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one, Jesus Christ.
18 So then as through one trespass, all men were condemned; even so through one act of righteousness, all men were justified to life.
19 For as through the one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, even so through the obedience of the one, many will be made righteous.
20 The law came in besides, that the trespass might abound; but where sin abounded, grace abounded more exceedingly;
21 that as sin reigned in death, even so grace might reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Psalm 34
song title referencing taste and see that the Lord is good
1 I will bless Yahweh at all times. His praise will always be in my mouth.
2 My soul shall boast in Yahweh. The humble shall hear of it, and be glad.
3 Oh magnify Yahweh with me. Let us exalt his name together.
4 I sought Yahweh, and he answered me, and delivered me from all my fears.
5 They looked to him, and were radiant. Their faces shall never be covered with shame.
6 This poor man cried, and Yahweh heard him, and saved him out of all his troubles.
7 Yahweh’s angel encamps around those who fear him, and delivers them.
8 Oh taste and see that Yahweh is good. Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him.
9 Oh fear Yahweh, you his saints, for there is no lack with those who fear him.
10 The young lions do lack, and suffer hunger, but those who seek Yahweh shall not lack any good thing.
11 Come, you children, listen to me. I will teach you the fear of Yahweh.
12 Who is someone who desires life, and loves many days, that he may see good?
13 Keep your tongue from evil, and your lips from speaking lies.
14 Depart from evil, and do good. seek peace, and pursue it.
15 Yahweh’s eyes are toward the righteous. His ears listen to their cry.
16 Yahweh’s face is against those who do evil, to cut off their memory from the earth.
17 The righteous cry, and Yahweh hears, and delivers them out of all their troubles.
18 Yahweh is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit.
19 Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but Yahweh delivers him out of them all.
20 He protects all of his bones. Not one of them is broken.
21 Evil shall kill the wicked. Those who hate the righteous shall be condemned.
22 Yahweh redeems the soul of his servants. None of those who take refuge in him shall be condemned.

Ephesians 4:1-16
main text for the sermon
1 I therefore, the prisoner in the Lord, beg you to walk worthily of the calling with which you were called,
2 with all lowliness and humility, with patience, bearing with one another in love;
3 being eager to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.
4 There is one body, and one Spirit, even as you also were called in one hope of your calling;
5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism,
6 one God and Father of all, who is over all, and through all, and in us all.
7 But to each one of us was the grace given according to the measure of the gift of Christ.
8 Therefore he says, “When he ascended on high, he led captivity captive, and gave gifts to men.”
9 Now this, “He ascended”, what is it but that he also first descended into the lower parts of the earth?
10 He who descended is the one who also ascended far above all the heavens, that he might fill all things.
11 He gave some to be apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, shepherds and teachers;
12 for the perfecting of the saints, to the work of serving, to the building up of the body of Christ;
13 until we all attain to the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a full grown man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ;
14 that we may no longer be children, tossed back and forth and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in craftiness, after the wiles of error;
15 but speaking truth in love, we may grow up in all things into him, who is the head, Christ;
16 from whom all the body, being fitted and knit together through that which every joint supplies, according to the working in measure of each individual part, makes the body increase to the building up of itself in love.

Ephesians 1-3
described as inspiration and indicative foundation before application in chapters 4-6
1:1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus through the will of God, to the saints who are at Ephesus, and the faithful in Christ Jesus:
1:2 Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
1:3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ;
1:4 even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we would be holy and without defect before him in love;
1:5 having predestined us for adoption as children through Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his desire,
1:6 to the praise of the glory of his grace, by which he freely gave us favor in the Beloved,
1:7 in whom we have our redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace,
1:8 which he made to abound toward us in all wisdom and prudence,
1:9 making known to us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure which he purposed in him
1:10 to an administration of the fullness of the times, to sum up all things in Christ, the things in the heavens, and the things on the earth, in him;
1:11 in whom also we were assigned an inheritance, having been foreordained according to the purpose of him who does all things after the counsel of his will;
1:12 to the end that we should be to the praise of his glory, we who had before hoped in Christ.
1:13 In him you also, having heard the word of the truth, the Good News of your salvation—in whom, having also believed, you were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit,
1:14 who is a pledge of our inheritance, to the redemption of God’s own possession, to the praise of his glory.
1:15 For this cause I also, having heard of the faith in the Lord Jesus which is among you, and the love which you have toward all the saints,
1:16 don’t cease to give thanks for you, making mention of you in my prayers,
1:17 that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you a spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him;
1:18 having the eyes of your hearts enlightened, that you may know what is the hope of his calling, and what are the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints,
1:19 and what is the exceeding greatness of his power toward us who believe, according to that working of the strength of his might
1:20 which he worked in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and made him to sit at his right hand in the heavenly places,
1:21 far above all rule, and authority, and power, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age, but also in that which is to come.
1:22 He put all things in subjection under his feet, and gave him to be head over all things for the assembly,
1:23 which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all.
2:1 You were made alive when you were dead in transgressions and sins,
2:2 in which you once walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in the children of disobedience;
2:3 among whom we also all once lived in the lusts of our flesh, doing the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, even as the rest.
2:4 But God, being rich in mercy, for his great love with which he loved us,
2:5 even when we were dead through our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved),
2:6 and raised us up with him, and made us to sit with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus,
2:7 that in the ages to come he might show the exceeding riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus;
2:8 for by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God,
2:9 not of works, that no one would boast.
2:10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared before that we would walk in them.
2:11 Therefore remember that once you, the Gentiles in the flesh, who are called “uncircumcision” by that which is called “circumcision”, (in the flesh, made by hands);
2:12 that you were at that time separate from Christ, alienated from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of the promise, having no hope and without God in the world.
2:13 But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off are made near in the blood of Christ.
2:14 For he is our peace, who made both one, and broke down the middle wall of partition,
2:15 having abolished in his flesh the hostility, the law of commandments contained in ordinances, that he might create in himself one new man of the two, making peace;
2:16 and might reconcile them both in one body to God through the cross, having killed the hostility thereby.
2:17 He came and preached peace to you who were far off and to those who were near.
2:18 For through him we both have our access in one Spirit to the Father.
2:19 So then you are no longer strangers and foreigners, but you are fellow citizens with the saints, and of the household of God,
2:20 being built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the chief cornerstone;
2:21 in whom the whole building, fitted together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord;
2:22 in whom you also are built together for a habitation of God in the Spirit.
3:1 For this cause I, Paul, am the prisoner of Christ Jesus on behalf of you Gentiles,
3:2 if it is so that you have heard of the administration of that grace of God which was given me toward you;
3:3 how that by revelation the mystery was made known to me, as I wrote before in few words,
3:4 by which, when you read, you can perceive my understanding in the mystery of Christ;
3:5 which in other generations was not made known to the children of men, as it has now been revealed to his holy apostles and prophets in the Spirit;

compared opening of chapter 3 to chapter 4, noting Paul calls himself prisoner of Christ Jesus
1 For this cause I, Paul, am the prisoner of Christ Jesus on behalf of you Gentiles,
2 if it is so that you have heard of the administration of that grace of God which was given me toward you;
3 how that by revelation the mystery was made known to me, as I wrote before in few words,
4 by which, when you read, you can perceive my understanding in the mystery of Christ;
5 which in other generations was not made known to the children of men, as it has now been revealed to his holy apostles and prophets in the Spirit;
6 that the Gentiles are fellow heirs, and fellow members of the body, and fellow partakers of his promise in Christ Jesus through the Good News,
7 of which I was made a servant, according to the gift of that grace of God which was given me according to the working of his power.
8 To me, the very least of all saints, was this grace given, to preach to the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ,
9 and to make all men see what is the administration of the mystery which for ages has been hidden in God, who created all things through Jesus Christ;
10 to the intent that now through the assembly the manifold wisdom of God might be made known to the principalities and the powers in the heavenly places,
11 according to the eternal purpose which he purposed in Christ Jesus our Lord;
12 in whom we have boldness and access in confidence through our faith in him.
13 Therefore I ask that you may not lose heart at my troubles for you, which are your glory.
14 For this cause, I bow my knees to the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,
15 from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named,
16 that he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, that you may be strengthened with power through his Spirit in the inward man;
17 that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; to the end that you, being rooted and grounded in love,
18 may be strengthened to comprehend with all the saints what is the width and length and height and depth,
19 and to know Christ’s love which surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.
20 Now to him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us,
21 to him be the glory in the assembly and in Christ Jesus to all generations forever and ever. Amen.

Philippians 2
Christ emptying himself, being found as a man, humbling himself to death on a cross
1 If therefore there is any exhortation in Christ, if any consolation of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any tender mercies and compassion,
2 make my joy full, by being like-minded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind;
3 doing nothing through rivalry or through conceit, but in humility, each counting others better than himself;
4 each of you not just looking to his own things, but each of you also to the things of others.
5 Have this in your mind, which was also in Christ Jesus,
6 who, existing in the form of God, didn’t consider equality with God a thing to be grasped,
7 but emptied himself, taking the form of a servant, being made in the likeness of men.
8 And being found in human form, he humbled himself, becoming obedient to death, yes, the death of the cross.
9 Therefore God also highly exalted him, and gave to him the name which is above every name;
10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, those on earth, and those under the earth,
11 and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
12 So then, my beloved, even as you have always obeyed, not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.
13 For it is God who works in you both to will and to work, for his good pleasure.
14 Do all things without murmurings and disputes,
15 that you may become blameless and harmless, children of God without defect in the middle of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you are seen as lights in the world,
16 holding up the word of life; that I may have something to boast in the day of Christ, that I didn’t run in vain nor labor in vain.
17 Yes, and if I am poured out on the sacrifice and service of your faith, I rejoice, and rejoice with you all.
18 In the same way, you also rejoice, and rejoice with me.
19 But I hope in the Lord Jesus to send Timothy to you soon, that I also may be cheered up when I know how you are doing.
20 For I have no one else like-minded, who will truly care about you.
21 For they all seek their own, not the things of Jesus Christ.
22 But you know the proof of him, that, as a child serves a father, so he served with me in furtherance of the Good News.
23 Therefore I hope to send him at once, as soon as I see how it will go with me.
24 But I trust in the Lord that I myself also will come shortly.
25 But I counted it necessary to send to you Epaphroditus, my brother, fellow worker, fellow soldier, and your apostle and servant of my need;
26 since he longed for you all, and was very troubled, because you had heard that he was sick.
27 For indeed he was sick, nearly to death, but God had mercy on him; and not on him only, but on me also, that I might not have sorrow on sorrow.
28 I have sent him therefore the more diligently, that, when you see him again, you may rejoice, and that I may be the less sorrowful.
29 Receive him therefore in the Lord with all joy, and hold such in honor,
30 because for the work of Christ he came near to death, risking his life to supply that which was lacking in your service toward me.

John 17
cited alongside Ephesians 4 as New Testament call against division
1 Jesus said these things, and lifting up his eyes to heaven, he said, “Father, the time has come. Glorify your Son, that your Son may also glorify you;
2 even as you gave him authority over all flesh, so he will give eternal life to all whom you have given him.
3 This is eternal life, that they should know you, the only true God, and him whom you sent, Jesus Christ.
4 I glorified you on the earth. I have accomplished the work which you have given me to do.
5 Now, Father, glorify me with your own self with the glory which I had with you before the world existed.
6 I revealed your name to the people whom you have given me out of the world. They were yours, and you have given them to me. They have kept your word.
7 Now they have known that all things whatever you have given me are from you,
8 for the words which you have given me I have given to them, and they received them, and knew for sure that I came from you, and they have believed that you sent me.
9 I pray for them. I don’t pray for the world, but for those whom you have given me, for they are yours.
10 All things that are mine are yours, and yours are mine, and I am glorified in them.
11 I am no more in the world, but these are in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, keep them through your name which you have given me, that they may be one, even as we are.
12 While I was with them in the world, I kept them in your name. Those whom you have given me I have kept. None of them is lost, except the son of destruction, that the Scripture might be fulfilled.
13 But now I come to you, and I say these things in the world, that they may have my joy made full in themselves.
14 I have given them your word. The world hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.
15 I pray not that you would take them from the world, but that you would keep them from the evil one.
16 They are not of the world even as I am not of the world.
17 Sanctify them in your truth. Your word is truth.
18 As you sent me into the world, even so I have sent them into the world.
19 For their sakes I sanctify myself, that they themselves also may be sanctified in truth.
20 Not for these only do I pray, but for those also who will believe in me through their word,
21 that they may all be one; even as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be one in us; that the world may believe that you sent me.
22 The glory which you have given me, I have given to them; that they may be one, even as we are one;
23 I in them, and you in me, that they may be perfected into one; that the world may know that you sent me, and loved them, even as you loved me.
24 Father, I desire that they also whom you have given me be with me where I am, that they may see my glory, which you have given me, for you loved me before the foundation of the world.
25 Righteous Father, the world hasn’t known you, but I knew you; and these knew that you sent me.
26 I made known to them your name, and will make it known; that the love with which you loved me may be in them, and I in them.”

The message in order, in a few minutes of reading.
On Easter Sunday at First B Jackson, the pastor walked through Ephesians 4:1-16, the passage that New Testament scholar Klein Snodgrass called the greatest description of the local church in all of Scripture. The message traced how the unity already given to believers in Christ must be carefully maintained, and how the gifts Christ distributes to the church exist to bring that body to maturity. A covenant welcome for several new members opened the service before the teaching began.
What was said
Ephesians divides cleanly into two halves. Chapters one through three are inspiration, stating what is already true about believers in the heavenlies. Chapters four through six are application, and one signal of that shift is the way Jesus is named: in the first half he is almost always called Christ, the anointed one, but in the second half he is called Lord. The pastor pointed out that you can say "yes, Lord" or you can say "no," but you cannot say "no, Lord" without contradicting yourself. That shift in title is the hinge the whole passage turns on.
Paul opens the application section by urging believers to walk worthy of their calling, and he immediately describes what that walk looks like: humility, gentleness, patience, and bearing with one another in love. The pastor noted that those qualities describe Jesus himself, who left the glories of heaven, could have called ten thousand angels at any moment, and still endured the disciples bumping their heads against the same walls over and over again.
The next move in the passage is the string of "ones": one body, one Spirit, one hope, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all. The pastor was direct about what that means for Protestant Americans, who he said are particularly good at dividing and denominating. He described driving the back roads of Georgia and passing a Church of Christ, then a Church of Christ in Yahweh, then a Church of Christ in God the Messiah, and said that kind of landscape should be upsetting to anyone who has been reading Ephesians four or John seventeen. The unity described here is not something believers manufacture, only God can establish it, but it is something any one person can ruin.
From the "ones," the passage moves to the gifts Christ distributes from his ascension. The pastor worked through apostles, prophets, evangelists, and pastors-and-teachers as four categories, noting that all four have one thing in common: they are ministers of the word. He read the Greek behind "apostle" as "sent-out one," which is why he connected it to missionaries, and he described evangelists as people simply wired to present Christ wherever they are. He mentioned a man named Rodney Bishop from his childhood who ministered to strangers at gas pumps and in line at the store and simply could not help it. He located himself as a pastor-teacher, and acknowledged that is probably why he skipped the altar call entirely.
The purpose of those gifts is not to do the ministry for the congregation but to equip the saints so the whole body can do the work of ministry together. The pastor pointed to a church sign he once passed that listed the pastor's name and then read "ministers: the whole congregation," and said that is exactly what Ephesians four eleven and twelve teaches. The building up of the body in both quantity and quality belongs to every member operating according to their gift, not just to the people up front.
The passage closes with a picture of maturity: a body no longer tossed around by every wind of doctrine or by the craftiness of those who scheme against it, but instead speaking the truth in love and growing up in every way into Christ the head. The pastor used the image of a couple in premarital counseling, both moving closer to God and therefore closer to each other, to illustrate how unity in the body works the same way. When every part is functioning properly, the body builds itself up in love, and that growth, he said, is something that belongs to Christ himself, not to any human institution.

Here is a guide we have prepared for you: the passages in order, questions for the group, and room to write.
- Pastor Nathan draws a distinction between chapters one through three of Ephesians being 'inspiration' and chapters four through six being 'application.' How does knowing who Christ is change the way you hear a call to walk worthy of your calling?
- Pastor Nathan says the unity of the Spirit is something God establishes that we cannot manufacture, but we can ruin it. Where have you seen that play out, either in a church or in a relationship?
