Before Philip Called You

A study guide · October 21, 2012 · John

Watch or read it

In one paragraph

This message was a close reading of John 1:43-51, the story of Philip calling Nathaniel to come meet Jesus. The central idea was that every sincere seeker of truth can witness the power of God firsthand by seeing how Jesus stands as master over past, present, and future. The pastor used Nathaniel's story to show what that mastery looks like in an ordinary life. The passage opens mid-movement....

Read together

  1. John 1:43-51 read in full as the primary text for the sermon
  2. John 1:1-18 mentioned as the prologue covered the previous week

Talk about it

  1. The pastor described Nathaniel as a 'sincere seeker of truth' who was under the fig tree studying Scripture. What does that picture of someone genuinely searching for God look like in your own life?
  2. When Jesus said 'an Israelite indeed in whom there is no deceit,' the pastor suggested Jesus was calling Nathaniel out with a smile, not in condemnation. How does it change the way you think about Jesus to picture him responding to your skepticism or sarcasm with a smile rather than judgment?
  3. Jesus told Nathaniel 'before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.' The pastor said Jesus knows where you have been and who you are today. Is that thought more comforting or unsettling to you, and why?
  4. Nathaniel was studying about Jacob, a deceiver, and yet God was making a great nation through him. The pastor connected that to the idea that God redeems even people full of guile. Where have you seen that kind of redemption in your own story or someone else's?
  5. The pastor described the Christian life as putting your drive in neutral and letting God push the car, walking in victory more and more over time. What does that kind of yielding actually look like in a practical, day-to-day way for you?
