Scripture referenced 17 passages

The passage this message was preached from, in full, with every other passage it reached for.

  • Romans 1:16-17 cited as the theme of the letter, the gospel as the power unto salvation for all who believe

16 For I am not ashamed of the Good News of Christ, because it is the power of God for salvation for everyone who believes; for the Jew first, and also for the Greek.

17 For in it is revealed God’s righteousness from faith to faith. As it is written, “But the righteous shall live by faith.”

Recap

The message in order, in a few minutes of reading.

This message came from Romans 5:12 through 6:4, the passage Paul uses to contrast Adam and Christ as the two men with whom every human being is identified. Pastor Mark walked through the text to show that death through Adam is the default condition for all people, and that life through Christ is the gift God has made available to those who believe. The morning also included the baptism of Lisa Wacob, which gave the final verses about baptism particular weight.

What was said

The passage opens with a stark claim: sin entered the world through one man, Adam, and death came to all people through that sin. Pastor Mark described Adam as the "federal head" of humanity, meaning that in his disobedience against God's direct command, all of us are implicated. The Hungarian proverb he quoted put it plainly: "Adam ate the apple and our teeth still ache."

Before the law of Moses was given, sin was already present in the world through all those generations from Adam onward. But Pastor Mark paused on a hard verse: sin is not charged against anyone's account where there is no law. Death still reigned in that period, because Adam's sin had set it in motion, even for those who had not broken an explicit command the way Adam had.

The law was given through Moses, Pastor Mark explained, not to fix the problem but to make the trespass visible. Where there is no law, there is no crime in the legal sense. The law exposed the full depth of human sin. And yet where sin increased, grace increased all the more. That is not a license to sin, and Paul shuts that argument down hard in chapter six with what Pastor Mark rendered as "heck no" from the Greek.

The whole passage sets Adam and Christ in contrast. Both began with a clean slate. Adam fell quickly into disobedience and carried all of humanity into condemnation with him. Christ, called the second Adam in other places in Scripture, was obedient all the way through, even to death on a cross. Pastor Mark referenced the title of a John Piper sermon on this text: "Adam's Fatal Disobedience and Christ's Triumphant Obedience." That contrast is the engine of the entire passage.

The gift of God, Pastor Mark said, cannot be compared to the damage done by one man's sin. The judgment followed one sin and brought condemnation. The gift followed many trespasses and brings justification. God's grace is simply larger than Adam's failure and larger than our own. Those who receive that gift are described in verse 17 as those who will reign in life through Jesus Christ, and Pastor Mark noted that "receive" is doing real work there. This is not a universalist passage. It is addressed to people who have actually trusted Christ.

Chapter 6 moves from theology into practice. Being baptized into Christ means being baptized into his death, and therefore into his resurrection. Pastor Mark connected this directly to Lisa Wacob's baptism that morning. When she went under the water, she was publicly identifying herself with Christ's death and burial. When she came up, she was identifying with his resurrection. The words he spoke over her, that she is buried with Christ and raised to walk in newness of life, come straight from this text. The whole next section of Romans, he said, will be about what it looks like to actually live that out, walking in the Spirit rather than in the flesh.

Doing a Bible study?

Here is a guide we have prepared for you: the passages in order, questions for the group, and room to write.

  1. Pastor Mark described Adam as our 'federal head,' meaning his sin became the default condition for all of humanity. How does it sit with you personally to think of yourself as someone who begins life already identified with Adam, before you have done anything yourself?
  2. The missionary Ted mentioned that a stranger offering you 99 good things freely while keeping back only one would seem generous, not cruel. How does that picture change the way you think about God's command to Adam in the garden?

2:52 Speaker 1Amen. Y'all sound good this morning. We're going to sing hymn number seven seventy nine if you want your part. I doubt you do. We mostly know this song.
3:01 I'll fly away. I'll fly away. Like the remote that was in my hand that just flew away.
3:12 Speaker 2Some glad morning when this life is all fly away When the shadows of this life have gone, I'll fly away. Like a bird from prison bars has flown, I'll fly away I'll fly away oh glory I'll fly away in the morning when I die hallelujah by and by I'll fly away just a few more weary days and then fly away to a land where joy shall never end I'll fly away fly away oh glory in the morning when I die hallelujah by and by fly away Amen. Y'all can have a seat.
4:55 Speaker 1Got a few announcements this morning. Usually, my first announcement is what? Night. Awana is usually my first announcement but if you'll notice the circle right here with the big X in the middle where we do game time, it's gone because we do not have a wana meeting tomorrow night but we do have Monday nights. It is on.
5:14 So, Monday nights, meal, music, and a message are happening at 06:00. Carl is preaching his way through Nehemiah and we will have a a message but we lead up to that with a meal together and the music and the band's having a a great time right now too. So, come on in and join us for Monday nights. Kids are welcome. There's nursery provided for ages, I think it's one through four downstairs and we will have the rest of em can either be in there with us with Monday night or they can help out downstairs as long as they're helpful, I've been told.
5:49 So, alright. Connect hours still happen in between services. This one is one that will be May 31 which is, is that already really? When is that happening? Not this coming Tuesday but next Tuesday.
6:04 Okay. Not Tuesday. Tuesday week, we would say in Georgia. So a week from this coming Tuesday. Okay.
6:09 So May 31 is a Tuesday night, and the has graciously held a fundraiser for Turning Point Pregnancy Resource Center. They've been doing this for eighteen or nineteen years, we think. Not sure. It's a long time, and they're doing that again. The tickets are $24 for adults, dollars 12 for kids 12 and under, and that'll be a good evening, good show, good meal, but for a good cause.
6:33 If you would, come on out. We are not having Monday night, the night before that on the thirtieth. We're trying to encourage all the Monday nighters to come on Tuesday night instead if they can to the Bar J for that fundraiser and the baby bottle campaign, I'm calling them back in now. We have had them out for a long time and if you have filled a baby bottle full of change or full of bills or full of big checks, you wanna bring em back in, please do and that Bar J Chuckway, we like to have em all back in before the thirty first. My sister's closet was awesome.
7:05 Spring cleanup day was awesome. These are last week's announcements. These still apply. There's a Surf Shack Vacation Bible School. Surf Shack is the theme.
7:14 Vacation Bible School is happening June 20 through the twenty fourth and we still need volunteers especially nursery worker volunteers. So, if you feel like God is impressing upon you through my pleading with you right now, To be one of our nursery volunteers, if you love kids, please, please, please, consider that and talk to Krista Clemmer, Carl's wife, Krista Clemmer, is in charge of the Vacation Bible School and Dancey Tolleson takes a large role too and so if you talk to one of them, that would be helpful. We need volunteers and for everything else, there are announcements in the bulletin and so, check em out there. Anything else that you have? No.
7:50 Okay. Good. Would y'all stand up and greet one another and we'll bring you back together with a song.
7:56 Speaker 2Until then. My heart can sing when I pause to remember heartache here is but a stepping stone along a trail that's winding always upward this troubled world is not my final hope until then my heart will go on singing until then with joy I'll carry on until the day my eyes behold the city will dim and lose their value if we recall they're borrowed for a while and things of earth that cause the heart to tremble remember there will only bring a smile but until then my heart will go on singing until then with joy I'll carry on until the day my eyes behold that city until the day God calls me home this weary world with all its toil and struggle may take its toll of misery and strife the soul of man is like a waiting falcon when it's released it's destined for the skies but until then my heart will go on singing until then with joy I'll carry on until the day my eyes behold the city until the day God calls me home
11:20 Speaker 1Seem to be a lot of songs looking forward to the future. Now, last week, we talked about exalting in the hope of the glory of God and that incorruptible hope heading forward and these songs are both looking forward to that eternal resting place but it's also acknowledging the tribulations. We can exalt in the tribulations because they bring perseverance, perseverance brings proven character and proven character gets you right back to hope. In Jesus name, we're thankful. Let's sing father God, hymn number one forty one.
11:54 Speaker 2Father God I give all thanks and praise to thee father God my hands I humbly raise to thee for thy mighty power and love me amaze me and I stand in awe and worship father God let's sing it again father God I give all thanks and praise to thee father God my hands I humbly raise to thee raise for thy mighty power and love amaze me amaze me and I stand in awe and worship father
13:07 Speaker 1Talk and have a seat. I'm gonna invite the frontline team to come forward and while they're coming forward, welcome back, everybody. There are lots of y'all. There are rows that are filling up. They're only filled from about mid May to mid September and I'm I'm very very thankful that y'all are back.
13:25 So, welcome. It's good to see you. God, thank you for having these return. I thank you that we have one body, one spirit, one baptism that we are one in Christ whether we're here or in South Georgia or in the Northern parts of Canada or Siberia, Romania, or wherever lord that you have a body and it is to the ends of the earth and lord, as we seek to go places that the gospel has not been before, would you show us our way? Would you train us well in the commandments that you've given so that we understand them so that we're living them out and lord so that we may go and make disciples baptizing them and teaching them all things that you command.
14:10 In Jesus name, lord, I ask you to take this offering, this acknowledgement that you have given to us all that we have, every good and perfect gift is from above. And God, we ask you to take back some of what you've given to us so that others may know your son. Would you take this and multiply it, lord, to the efforts of extending your good gospel and advancing your kingdom to the ends of the earth, to every tribe, tongue, and nation so that they may have that opportunity to know you. In Jesus name, amen. So, for those of you, I'm for those of you who have been here, you know that we're up to Romans five.
14:52 We have been going through pretty methodically all the way through Romans. If you've been away and I'm seeing several faces that that have been. Some of you have called and said, hey, we've been keeping up on the internet. We have that availability. If you want to, you can.
15:08 Wherever you are with WiFi, I suppose, or with an inner internet. We're up to Romans five twelve and we're gonna go through six four today and I'm reserving the right to come back and loop back around next week and start back over with chapter six one and we're gonna go forward. I'm hitting it depending on the translation that you have. I'm hitting it in the middle of a paragraph today. In some translations, six four is the end of a paragraph and some, it is in the middle of a paragraph.
15:35 So, I'm just telling you that ahead of time but I feel like it's it's got value especially this morning in the first service, we had Lisa Wacob who's the oldest of the Eric and Colleen Wacob's girls was baptized this morning and so she was baptized and because of that, I wanted to get this up to six four which is about baptism. So, that's the reason I went forward a little bit today but I want you to concentrate on Romans five twelve through 21 especially and it will present this idea that death through Adam is the default for human beings. Death through Adam is our default and life through Christ is available. It's made available by almighty God. He's good and he is merciful and he's gracious and he's loving.
16:26 Death through Adam is the default for human beings. That's the concept of original sin. We'll talk about it a little bit more. This is the main text about original sin that Augustine has plumbed the depths of so many years ago. Saint Augustine and so many since him have confounded themselves trying to articulate.
16:44 I feel like where the Bible is somewhat mysterious, it is okay for us to be somewhat mysterious. When I try to put a period where there's a dot dot dot, I feel like I'm not really doing my job. Leave the dot dot dot, okay? With whom will you identify? I think that this is the part of the passage.
17:04 Death through Adam is the default for every tribe, tongue, and nation. Adam is our federal head as the theologians call him. In Adam's sin against the direct command of God, we all have naturally sinned and by our own choosing, we do it too. Alright. So, with whom will you identify?
17:30 So, we start in five twelve. Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man and death through sin and in this way, death came to all people because all sinned. See what I just explained that before I got to the scripture. That's what I'm backing it up with right there. Just as sin entered the world through one man and if you think, well, that one man is not named, he is named in a few more verses.
17:56 It'll call it out Adam as a type or as a pattern of Christ and death entered through his sin. Now, God had given him a direct command and I like what Ted Rabinold said a few weeks ago that we have a tendency in our society or our society has a tendency to say that God was mean for not allowing Adam that one tree in the garden that he said, don't eat of the fruit of this tree, the knowledge of good and evil. You can have all the rest of this stuff. You can have everything else and it's all good and I made it to be enjoyed but this one thing, he holds back. Ted, the missionary was here two weeks ago, said, if a if a guy, stranger to you, comes up and says, here are 99 really good things which you can enjoy for your own and I'm giving them free of charge but I have one thing that I wanna hold back for myself.
18:47 Would you think that was a good guy or a bad guy? He's a good guy. This is a good God and he has given graciously good things to Adam but he did say, trust me, Adam. You don't wanna do this. Don't do this and he did it.
19:04 To be sure, sin was in the world before the law was given and this is the law of Moses that he's talking about before the law was given to Moses at Sinai. To be sure, sin was in the world. In fact, it says right there that sin was in the world from the very beginning. The first man, our federal head, the one from whom all tribes, tongues, and nations descend just as sin entered the world through one man and death through sin and in this way, death came to all people because all sin, to be sure, sin was in the world before the law was given. We see that if we look at the Old Testament in Genesis, we see that it was there with Adam.
19:43 It was there with Eve. Although Eve had not received the direct command of God. She received it through Adam. She knew better but she was tempted. He was tempted.
19:55 He had received the direct command and that's where death entered into the world. To be sure, sin was in the world before the law was given. So, from all of those generations between Adam and Moses, all that happened in between there, it says, sin was in the world before the law was given. Well, it certainly was. This is a hard verse for a lot of people but sin is not charged against anyone's account where there is no law.
20:24 Okay. If we maybe I'll wait on that. I'll come back to this point, okay? Sin is not charged against anyone's account where there is no law. If you read the Old Testament up to before Moses, you read it and you go, is there anybody that's good?
20:40 Is there anybody that does anything good? Even the best people that we claim. Oh, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Did you read what Abraham did? Did you read what Isaac did?
20:50 Oh my goodness, Jacob? Really? It's bad stuff, bad stuff, bad stuff. There's sin all throughout that period and it says, sin was in the world before the law was given but sin's not charged against anyone's account where there is no law. Nevertheless, death reigned.
21:06 So, when death entered through Adam, everyone all the way up through when the law was given, died. That physical death had Adam not sinned, Adam would still be here and we would not. Do you get that? I think. We would not.
21:23 That's a theologian thing too. That's a. Dot. Or either question mark. I'm not sure but I know that Adam is where the sin entered the world and he has transmitted it to all of us since.
21:33 Nevertheless, death reigned from the time of Adam to the time of Moses. Even over those who did not sin by breaking a command. Now, Adam had been given a direct command and he broke it. Do you get that? Now, after Adam, the direct commanding really picks back up with Moses, the direct commanding.
21:54 There were other examples in there but when the law was given and it was for their good, It was Moses who received it and what were the Israelite children doing when Moses was receiving the law of God on top of Sinai? Breaking every single one of those commands, okay? We'll get to that in a minute too. Nevertheless, death reigned from the time of Adam to the time of Moses. Whether you want to or not, you are identified with Adam.
22:27 You don't really have a choice whether or not you will have been identified with Adam. That was set from the time that he sent. It was part of life. Death became part of life with Adam's sin. From the time of Adam to the time of Moses and even over those who did not sin by breaking the command as did Adam, Who is a pattern of the one to come?
22:49 Now, Adam started with a clean slate. Or you agree with, do you agree with me? He started with a clean slate. He did not have that original sin which we all deal with. Augustine says that we have original sin and he goes on to speculate as to how exactly that's transmitted and there are lots of people who have speculated as to how that is transmitted and with Christ having been the second Adam, he's called in a couple of different places and having been born of a virgin birth, there are lots of people who speculate and would say flatly that that's how it comes about.
23:25 Every single one of us who is born in the natural way receives from Adam, that original sin. Christ started with a clean slate and when he started with a clean slate, he was able, not like Adam, to be obedient. I looked up just the title of Piper's sermon, John Piper's sermon on this passage or he's preached like 17 sermons on this passage but I looked up one of em and I love the title said, Adam's fatal disobedience and Christ triumphant obedience. Adam's fatal disobedience and Christ triumphal obedience and that's really really good. That's what the whole passage is pointing to.
24:06 If you get that today that you can identify with Adam in your disobedience, in his disobedience, and yours or you can identify with Christ in his obedience and yours, okay? So, here we go. Breaking the command as did Adam, who is a pattern of the one to come, but the gift is not like the trespass. The gift of God, salvation, the gift of God is that while we were yet sinners, Christ died on our behalf for all of those who would believe in him would be justified by their faith in his blood, in his death. Are you with me?
24:42 So, the gift, that's the gift it's talking about. The gift of salvation or justification but the gift is not like the trespass. For if the many died by the trespass of the one man, how much more did God's grace and the gift that came by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, overflow to the many. Now, just because we all identify with Adam to begin with, it means we do not deserve salvation. We do not deserve justification.
25:11 If you've been paying any attention for this whole book of Romans, you see, no one is righteous, no not one, nobody deserves the good, gracious gospel that God offers to all. So, God's grace and the gift that came by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, overflows to the many. Nor can the gift of God be compared with the result of one man's sin. The gift of God cannot be compared to the result of one man's sin. It is much much greater.
25:42 The gift of God is much much greater than Adam's sin or than your sin, one person's sin. The judgment followed one sin and brought about condemnation but the gift followed many many trespasses and brought justification. Are you with me? It's a it's a deep and heavy passage. Instead of having 83 slides today or a 116 slides today, I think I have 25.
26:10 We're nearing the end of the passage, okay? It's a simple thing. He's saying the judgment followed that one sin and it's serious. Adam's one sin, eating of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil has been cast down on every single one of us since. Save one.
26:29 Jesus Christ. He starts with a clean slate and he was able to be obedient, even obedient to death, even the death of a cross, This is the gospel. This is the good news that he took the punishment. The judgment followed one sin and brought condemnation for all but the gift followed many trespasses and we could say many trespasses just for each one of us. Now, if you were saying, well, it's not fair.
26:58 It's not fair that I start off with sin against my account. Well, have you done anything since then? Yeah. The gift followed many trespasses. Can I get a witness?
27:11 Yes. But the gift is what brings justification. The the gospel, the theme of this letter, remember, Romans one hundred sixteen and seventeen. I'm not ashamed of the gospel for it's the power unto salvation for all who believe. So, the gift is what brings justification.
27:30 Four, if by the trespass of the one man, that's Adam, death reigned through that one man. Just because of Adam's sin. There's an old Hungarian proverb that goes something like this. Adam ate the apple and our teeth still ache. Adam ate the apple and our teeth still ache.
27:48 It it is something that we have to deal with. Our identification with our federal head. For if by the trespass of the one man, Adam, death reigned through that one man, How much more? How much more will those who receive God's abundant provision of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man Jesus Christ. Now, I told you last week, we're getting to a place where it is transitioning from this foundational theology that all have sinned, fallen short of the glory of God.
28:19 God is good and has offered salvation to anyone who would believe and accept it. And we see again the receive right here. This passage has been misconstrued as a universalist passage too often. So, I wanna say, the letter was written to Christians. Paul believed that they were really Christians.
28:40 Wayward Christians, aggravated Christians, aggravating one another? Yes, but he still believed that they were believers and so when he speaks to them and says, how much more will those who receive God's abundant provision of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man Jesus Christ. He's speaking to people who are supposed to know that. They're supposed to have experienced God's grace. They're supposed to be resting in that grace, standing in that grace like we said last week.
29:06 They're supposed to be at peace with God. How much more will those who receive God's abundant provision of grace and the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man Jesus Christ. Now, this reigning in life through the one man Jesus Christ is making that transition from foundational theology into actual practice of the Christian life. It's starting to talk about it. It'll get into practice instead of doxy, okay?
29:32 It's getting into practice. The practice of the life instead of right thinking, instead of right theology, instead of right understanding. It's getting into right righteous living and he's saying that that is a gift, the gift of righteousness to be able to do well in this world. It has to be through the one man, Jesus Christ. That's the way.
29:54 So, here we are at Romans five seventeen. 18 says this, consequently, just as trespass resulted in condemnation for all people, so also one righteous act resulted in justification and life for all people. We've got Adam and we've got Jesus. We've got Adam contrasted against Jesus. Both of them start with a clean slate.
30:21 One of them did not last very long before he fell into sin and you can see in Cain slaying Abel and ever since then, it got so bad before Noah that God decided to destroy the Earth with the flood. Yeah. Sin is a part of our existence as human beings and we know what it's like to be condemned. We know what it's like to feel that condemnation. So, also, one righteous act resulted in justification and life for all people.
30:50 For just as through disobedience of the one man, the many were made sinners, so also through the obedience of the one man, Jesus, the many will be made righteous. You see the many and many there? He goes back and forth and back and forth with many and many and in some places, he says, all all are in Adam and then he says, all, well, let's get to it. Let you hear it. The law was brought in so that the trespass might increase But where sin increased, grace increased all the more.
31:22 The law was brought in so that trespass might increase. What? What does that mean? So, if you think about it, they lived very crazy wayward lives. Even the best of em and we can see that in Genesis and we go, why in the world do they live that way?
31:40 Well, for one thing, they did not have a law. If you think you have an understanding, it's passed down from generation to generation. How long does it take to get away from mom and daddy's way of thinking? Not long. The Israelites proved that it was a generation or two and they're completely backwards again.
31:57 So, the law was brought about so that trespass might increase. How do you how do we decrease crime? Okay. If you're from Colorado, how do you decrease crime? Legalize it.
32:11 Right. If it's not against the law, it's no crime, okay? So, trespass increases where there is law. Do you do you understand what I'm saying? When I mentioned that all the children of Israel were breaking all of those laws while God was giving them, the first part of these verses says, that it's not been imputed to their account until they know better.
32:35 That's tough. But now they know better The law was brought in so that trespass might increase so that we could see our lack, so that we could see our want, so we could recognize our sins, so we could recognize our shortfall. The law was brought in but where sin increased, grace increased all the more. So, that just as sin reigned in death, so also grace might reign through righteousness to bring eternal life through Jesus Christ our lord. Do you see for every mention of Adam, there's a mention of Christ here.
33:09 It's about either identifying with Adam which is the default position for every single one of us or identifying with Christ for those who believe. He's made the provision. Now, it's up to you to believe it or reject it. First Corinthians 15, also written to Christians, wayward ones, my goodness. Corinth was eaten up with sin and problems.
33:31 And factions. For as in Adam, all die, so also in Christ, all will be made alive. Now, this was written to Christians. All of you who are in Christ will be made alive and all of you who are not in Christ, you're still in Adam and you will die. Spiritual death forever.
33:48 With whom will you identify? And I think that's what the passage is getting at. With whom will you identify? All who identify with Adam will die and that's the default. All who identify with Christ will be made alive.
34:03 By the same power that raised Jesus from the grave. Now, the whole thing's about the gospel that Jesus took our sin upon him and nailed it to that tree. And he broke the power of that sin and then he was resurrected. Now, the same power that raised Jesus from the grave is what will make us alive in him. By our identification with him, by our belief in him, by that.
34:31 Now, practice is what we're getting into but it's still, you gotta get this part right. You've gotta be identified with him. So, what shall we say then? Chapter six says, are we to continue in sin so that grace may increase? Goodness gracious.
34:48 Paul has been dealing with some sophistry for the last couple of chapters where people are saying, oh well, Paul, if you're saying that, then, we ought to just go ahead on sin because for every sin that we commit, it means that God's grace is even bigger because he can get over that. I don't think you understand grace. I don't think you understand your sin if that's the case and Paul says, may it never be. Heck no. Meganoito in Greek.
35:10 Meganoito. Absolutely not. No way, no how. Uh-uh. How shall we who died to sin still live in it?
35:18 How is it? If we understand the depth of our own sin. And God forgives it and we're graciously and mercifully forgiven and we really understand that. You don't just think, I get to do whatever I want. It's more like, God, what would you have me do?
35:42 I love you. Thank you for that. Wow. I'm so humbled by this grace, this goodness. How shall we who died to sin still live in it?
35:53 Or do you not know people that of all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus have been baptized into his death? When he says that, Christ's death, Christ's death is where he took upon him all the sin of everyone who would believe. And put it to death. Do you not know that that's what we've been baptized into? And for Elisa Wakub this morning, she actually followed through in the right or the ordinance or the command of baptism to be baptized.
36:26 Now, we practice believers baptism here and the way that I typically do it is right here. Therefore, we have been buried with him through baptism and we actually do immerse here. If you sprinkle, that's fine with me. I don't really care honestly in the church that I grew up in. It was a small Southern Baptist Church and if you wanted to join, you had to be dumped.
36:48 That's the way it was. Most of it since it was in Georgia, most folks were dunked anyway. That's just the way it was. But if you had professed Christ, you believed in him. He is my higher power.
37:04 I want to identify with Christ. I know what it's like to identify with Adam. I know what disobedience feels like. I want to identify myself with Christ, access the power of God for him to get rid of the sin in my life, for him to gift me, to give to me the righteousness of Christ. Therefore, we have been buried with him through baptized into death so that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the father, we too might walk in newness of life.
37:35 So, this morning, I ask Elisa Wakup, do you profess your faith in Jesus Christ? Are you identifying with him and in command in in obedience to his command? Are you asking to be baptized? And she sheepishly nodded her head but when she went under the water of baptism, she was identifying herself publicly with Christ. So, I said, she is buried with Christ and raised to walk in newness of life.
38:00 That is a typical believer's baptism. That's the way that it goes. I know that there are differing traditions. This church actually does not require immersion baptism to become a member or certainly not to be an attender and you may or may not if you'd like to but right now, right here, it's fifteen till people. We got plenty of time to baptize as many of you as you want to be, okay?
38:28 I'm not joking. I know you didn't bring but one set of clothes. I brought an extra set. You can wear mine. They're big enough for it.
38:35 If you want to be baptized as a a method of showing other people, you are identifying with Christ. I wanna give you the opportunity and I'm serious about it. So, the baptismal is full. Philip and the Ethiopian eunuch in Acts, he's understanding because Philip is explaining the scripture, the the scroll of Isaiah and he starts from that place and he explains how Christ is the fulfillment, is the Messiah, is the anointed one and he's the one who paid the price for sin. If you want to identify with him and the Ethiopian eunuch looks out in in the desert and sees water and said, here, here's water.
39:15 What hinders me from being baptized? Philip said, nothing and I think he dunked him but hey, he might have sprinkled him. It was the desert. It's pretty sure he dunked it but anyway, Is there anybody here who would like to be baptized? To publicly profess faith in Christ If not, we'll sing our closing song and if there is, we'll play two songs.
39:41 Being buried with him in his death is saying and Paul says it multiple times. We haven't gotten to a lot of the passage yet yet where he says to put off the old man, to take it off, and to put on the new man, to wrap yourself or veil yourself, put on a cloak like you're putting on a cloak, the new man. This whole next three chapters is gonna be about either living in the spirit which Jesus did constantly or living in the flesh which Adam did resolutely several times at least. Alright, if there's nobody, would you stand with us? We were looking up baptismal hymns today.
40:22 Oh master, let me walk with thee. I think that this is a plaintiff prayer. Hymn number six sixty five and sing loud if you know it because I'm a little shaky on.
40:36 Speaker 2Oh master, let me walk with thee in lowly paths of service free. Tell me thy secret, in work that keeps plates lead and strong in trust that triumphs in hope that sends a shining ray far down the future's broadening way in peace that only
42:24 Speaker 1have a longer benediction today. It's completely straight from Ephesians. It's one eighteen through 23 and just allow this to soak in if you will. It mirrors that last passage. I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened so that you will know what is the hope of his calling.
42:46 What are the riches of the glory of his inheritance with the saints? And what is the surpassing greatness of his power toward us who believe? These are in accordance with the working of the strength of his might which he brought about in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places. Far above all rule and authority and power and dominion and every name that is named not only in this age but also in the one to come and he put all things in subjection under his feet and gave him Christ as head over all things to the church which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all. In Jesus name, may this be for you.
43:30 Amen.
