Watch or read it

In one paragraph

Pastor Carl opened James 2:14-26 on a Monday night, working through what it means for faith and deeds to belong together. The message was that saving faith is never passive: it shows itself in how we live toward one another, and that movement from faith to action back to God's glory is the whole design. Everything starts with a relationship with God, not with effort or obligation. Pastor Carl's...

Read together

  1. James 2:14-26 the main text read aloud and discussed throughout the sermon
  2. 1 John 4:19 cited to show that we love because God first loved us
  3. Ephesians 2:8-9 quoted to clarify that salvation is by grace through faith, not by works
  4. John 15:5 referenced as a visual of remaining in Christ as the vine producing fruit
  5. John 3 cited for Jesus telling Nicodemus that the Spirit moves like the wind

Talk about it

  1. Pastor Carl described faith and good deeds as inseparable, saying that a natural outflow of a relationship with God is good deeds toward others. What does that look like practically in your own life right now?
  2. James asks what good it does to tell a hungry, unclothed brother or sister to stay warm and eat well without actually helping them. Can you think of a time when you knew what you ought to do but did nothing about it, and what held you back?
  3. Pastor Carl said our actions make our faith complete, the way a missing puzzle piece leaves a puzzle unfinished. Where do you sense your faith might be incomplete because it has not yet moved into action?
  4. Gary shared that a study he did stopped him with the idea that God cannot give a large assignment to a small character, and that he had to let God mold him before he could be used. How have you experienced God shaping you in ways that were different from what you expected or wanted?
  5. Greg said that faith alone saves, but saving faith is never alone, and he described a still small voice nudging us toward action. What makes it hard to act on those nudges, and what has helped you follow through when you have?
