In one paragraph
Carl walked through Philippians 2:12-30 on a Monday evening at First B Jackson, looking at what it means to work out your salvation, shine like lights in the world, and care for the people around you the way Timothy and Epaphroditus did. The thread running through all of it was verse 13: "For God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases Him." Every instruction in...
Read together
- Hebrews 4:16 Carl quoted it as the basis for approaching God boldly to receive mercy and grace
- Philippians 2:12-30 the main passage read and discussed throughout the sermon
- Philippians 2:1-11 referred to as last week's passage providing the motivation for the instructions in chapter two
- John 8:12 Carl cited it as one of his favorite verses to illustrate Jesus as the light of the world
- James 1:19 Blake quoted it from memory as an example of scripture that needs no context to be good holy truth
Talk about it
- Carl came back several times to the idea that following Paul's instructions is a response to what God has first done for us, not a way to earn anything. How does that distinction land with you, and does it change how you think about the Christian life day to day?
- Carl pointed to verse 13 as his favorite verse in the passage: 'For God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases him.' When have you actually felt that at work in your own life, and what did it look like?
- Paul tells the Philippians to do everything without complaining and arguing, and Carl suggested that when we complain and argue it hides the evidence of God's transforming power in our lives. Do you agree with that? Where do you find that hardest to live out?
- Looking at Timothy and Epaphroditus, Carl asked what gave them the attitude to love and serve the church the way they did, and traced it back to the encouragement, comfort and fellowship they had in Christ. Who in your own life has modeled that kind of care, and what do you think was behind it?
- At the end of the evening someone shared that being thankful for everyday things is one thing, but on the spiritual side it feels more like a battle. How do you hold both of those together, and what does it look like for you to keep showing up in that battle?
