In one paragraph

Carl taught from Mark 4:1-32, walking through four parables Jesus told about seeds, a lamp, growing grain, and a mustard seed. The evening was a conversation-style gathering at First Baptist Jackson, with people sharing what stood out to them after the reading. The discussion kept coming back to one question: what does it look like to actually live out what these parables describe? Carl opened by...

Read together

  1. Mark 4:1-32 the main text read aloud covering the parables of the sower, the lamp, the growing seed, and the mustard seed
  2. John 8:12 Gannon cited it directly when connecting the lamp parable to Jesus declaring himself the light of the world
  3. Ephesians 2:8-9 a congregation member referenced it to make the point that faith and salvation are a gift from God, not earned by listening or effort

Talk about it

  1. Gannon pointed out that Jesus scattered seed on every kind of soil, not just the soil that looked promising. When you think about the people in your own life, where do you tend to hold back from sharing your faith, and what makes you hesitant there?
  2. One person in the group said he had always read the parable asking 'what soil type am I?' but had never put himself in the farmer's shoes. How does thinking of yourself as a sower, rather than just a receiver, change the way you approach conversations about faith?
  3. Jim described each type of soil as a state of the heart, and someone followed up by saying we don't actually know the condition of another person's heart. How does that uncertainty affect the way you think about your responsibility when you share the gospel?
  4. Gannon read from the parable of the growing seed that the farmer doesn't understand how the seed sprouts and grows, night and day, asleep or awake. Where in your life right now do you find it hardest to plant a seed and then wait patiently for God to do what only God can do?
  5. Blake said he often uses a short phrase, 'we're living in the light,' drawn from the lamp parable, and that living openly in the grace and love of Jesus leaves nothing to hide. What would it look like practically for you to live more fully in that light this week?
