In one paragraph

This week the pastor opened Second Peter, walking through the first eleven verses as Peter's own compressed sermon to Gentile Christians. He showed how the letter's greeting, its three-part argument, and its closing warning all circle the same tension: God is sovereign and has provided everything needed for a godly life, yet believers are still personally responsible for how they live. the pastor...

Read together

  1. 2 Peter 1:1-11 main passage preached through the entire sermon
  2. Romans 14:23 cited to support the point that all decisions not born of faith are sin and eternally fruitless
  3. John 14:6 quoted to show there is one way to God: I am the way, the truth, and the life
  4. Acts 10 Peter's vision of the sheet with unclean animals, told to take and eat, referenced to show Peter as a good Jewish boy being stretched
  5. Colossians 2:12 quoted in the closing benediction about being buried and raised with Christ in baptism
  6. Colossians 3:1-3 quoted in the closing benediction calling believers to seek things above and set their minds there
  7. Psalm 51 identified as the basis for the closing song Cleanse Me, called David's prayer
  8. Psalm 139 referenced as the other closing song, Search Me O God

Talk about it

  1. The pastor described 'epignosis' as firsthand, experiential knowledge of God rather than just knowing facts about Him. How has your own walk with God moved from knowing about Him to actually knowing Him, and what made the difference?
  2. Peter calls himself both a slave and an apostle of Jesus Christ, and the pastor pointed out that these Gentiles' faith was described as just as precious as Peter's own. What does it mean to you personally that your faith is considered equally precious, regardless of how you came to Christ?
  3. The pastor said that God is sovereign in our salvation, but that man is still responsible to respond. How do you hold those two things together in your own life, and where do you feel the tension between resting in what God has provided and making every effort as Peter calls us to do?
  4. Peter lists eight qualities, from goodness through agape love, and says that without them a believer is nearsighted and blind, forgetting that they have been cleansed from their past sins. Which of those qualities do you find hardest to grow in, and what do you think gets in the way?
  5. The pastor closed by talking about baptism as an early obedient step in striving for godliness, and he mentioned the Ethiopian eunuch who simply said, 'There is water, what is hindering me?' Is there an area of obedience in your own life where you have been hesitating, and what would it look like to take that step?
