Good News of Great Joy for All People

A study guide · December 20, 2022

Watch or read it

In one paragraph

On a Monday night in Advent, the congregation at First Baptist Jackson gathered for dinner and a gospel conversation centered on the birth announcement to the shepherds in Luke 2:8-20. The pastor walked through the passage and then opened the floor for people to share what struck them, and the discussion that followed became part of the message itself. The heart of it all was simple: hear the good...

Read together

  1. Luke 2:8-20 main passage read aloud, the angels announcing Jesus' birth to the shepherds
  2. Isaiah 9:6 quoted as what the shepherds would have known, 'for to us a child is born... prince of peace'
  3. Romans 10:17 cited to show that faith comes by hearing the good news
  4. Psalm 34:8 quoted as an invitation to taste and see that the Lord is good
  5. Psalm 107 cited with the call for the redeemed of the Lord to speak out
  6. Psalm 19 referenced by Ray as what the shepherds likely knew, the heavens telling the glory of God night after night
  7. James 4:6 referenced as saying God gives grace to the humble but opposes the proud
  8. John 10 referenced by the speaker in response to Al's comments about Jesus saying my sheep shall know my voice and the shepherd laying his life down for the sheep

Talk about it

  1. The shepherd's birth announcement was given to ordinary, humble people rather than to religious leaders or the prominent. What does that say to you about who the good news is actually for?
  2. The shepherds heard the message and then went to see for themselves. Can you think of a time when hearing about God's goodness led you to check it out personally, and what did that experience do for your faith?
  3. After everything they had seen and heard, the shepherds still had to go back to their flocks. How do you carry a renewed sense of hope or joy into ordinary, everyday work after a meaningful spiritual moment?
  4. One person in the group pointed out that God told the shepherds, people on the fringe, before telling anyone else. Who are the shepherds in our community today, and what would it look like for us to make sure they hear this good news?
  5. The shepherds heard it, went to see it, and then shared it. Where are you in that pattern right now, and what, if anything, is making the next step feel difficult?
