0:09
I come. And now is is the time to worship. Come. And now is the time to give your heart. Come just as you are to worship.
0:34
Come just as you are are to worship. Worship. God. One day, every tongue will confess. One native tongue will confess you are God.
0:49
One day, every knee will bow, Still, the greatest treasure remains for those that let you choose you now. From the top, come. Now is the time to worship. Come. Now is the time to give your heart.
1:18
Come. Just as are for your night. One day
2:28
God, we give you thanks for this morning, and, we do wanna come before you with a heart that's just ready to praise you. And so we got right off the bat, we confess that we fall short and we're sinners, and and we need a perfect savior, you Jesus, to to rescue us and to save us from the penalty of our sin and give us new life. And that's what you do, God. You give us new life. And the greatest treasure remains for those who choose you now, and it really is true.
2:57
So we give you thanks, and I pray, God, that you tune our heart to to sing your praise and meet with you this morning. In Jesus name, amen. Amen. You can have a seat.
3:09
Alright. Well, welcome. I'm glad y'all are here. I'm actually glad I'm here this week. I was gone last week and I've got a few to going about it.
3:32
Okay. Y'all, most of y'all probably got that on Email. It's it sounds like you've gotten that on Email and it's a pretty quick thing. We're considering some improvements in the kitchen and if you would do that, great. Thank you.
3:45
Please do. This Sunday morning, the girls study is at 10:00 down in the Common Grounds Room. Melissa and Geralyn are doing that for the middle school and high school girls. Monday nights at First B as always is happening at 06:15. Meal music and a message.
4:02
Carl is going through Matthew and that's always good. I'm looking forward to that tomorrow night.
4:08
Pulled pork tomorrow.
4:09
Pulled pork. Does that sound alright? That sounds great. The Turning Point baby bottle campaign, there are some baby bottles out there, and this is for Turning Point Pregnancy Resource Center. It's a big push have big push, sorry about that.
4:30
Sorry. Sorry. Y'all know all about that, I'll skip that one. Alright, family mission trip to Guatemala, May 9 through the sixteenth. KC and Brian McCooey can answer some of your questions about that.
4:47
I can answer some of your other questions about that if you'd want to know what the place is like because I've been there and Tanya has been there and Pascal's been there. I've got pictures I could show you if you want to see the kind of work that they do. It's an incredible place. Hope of Life International in Zacapa, Guatemala and that's May the ninth through the sixteenth, a family trip going there. The World Day of Prayer.
5:08
This is a women's event. Women's World Day of Prayer twenty fifteen. First B host this about every four or five years and this year, we are hosting. March 6 on Friday at twelve noon and tell your friends, tell folks from other churches, everybody, March 6, Friday, '12.
5:28
It's actually for fellas as well. Ladies and gentlemen are welcome to come. Not just ladies event. I made that amount announcement wrong last week. I apologize but it's for everybody.
5:39
Okay. Thank you very much. And this is gonna be weird for some of y'all. I'm advertising for another church. Ridge Life Church, some of y'all saw him in the July fourth parade.
5:50
They had not even launched as a church yet during the July 4 parade. They were hoping to launch in the fall and they have been having trouble finding a place and so, I've been talking with Jeremiah Fite is the is one of the guys who is leading this church and they've been struggling through and it's a great church plant. They've got a good heart. Sunday at 6PM in the Old Wilson Schoolhouse. For right now, that's where they're meeting but if any of y'all would like to go to that or you feel like, you know, encouraging and starting a church plant, helping out would be a good thing for you.
6:24
Consider going to that. 6PM, Sunday evenings, Ridge Life Church at the Old Wilson Schoolhouse and if you want any more information about that, you can ask me afterwards and I'll I'll tell em. I think they need a shot in the arm. I really think they need a shot in the arm and some encouragement and if any of y'all would like to join them on Sunday evenings, I think it'd be a good thing and I think that's the last announcement. So, if you would, stand up.
6:47
Is there anything else? Would you stand up and greet one another and then we will bring you back together with a few songs.
7:22
Soul. When I was sinking down, was sinking down, was sinking down. When I was sinking down, was sinking down. Was sinking down beneath God's righteous round. Christ laid aside his crown for my soul for my soul.
8:00
Christ laid aside his crown for my soul. I'll sing on, I'll sing on. And when from death I'm free, I'll sing and joy for me. And through eternity, I'll sing on, I'll sing on. And through eternity, I'll sing on.
9:46
And you're not a God created by human hands. And you're not a God dependent on any mortal man. And you were not a god in need of. Anything we can hear by your path, that's so sweet.
10:11
Let's sing that line again, shall we? And you're not a
10:15
God created by your hands. You're not a God in any more than men. And you're not a God in the end of it. Anything we can give by your hand, that's so sweet. You were on your throne.
11:54
You are God alone. You're unchangeable. You're unchangeable. You're unshakable. You're unstoppable.
12:06
That's are. You're unshakable. Unshakable. You're unshakable. What
12:53
God, we wanna take a moment just to just to say thank you for being God. And we we don't always realize, how you're working, but indeed you you are and indeed you exist and indeed you love and you care for for us, your children. And, God, sometimes our feelings say otherwise, but it's just true. You just do. You love you love.
13:14
And thank you that you are love and remind us of that once again. Amen. Lord, again, I I thank you for for calling us and and drawing us to yourself, just for for making us aware of you. And, God, there's so many ways to just know that you are. I mean, when we look around and and we're surrounded by these beautiful mountains and and we just see how how life is and that you supply everything, all of our needs.
16:45
You are a creator and sustainer. And, God, for that, we we wanna give you thanks, and we can give you thanks in so many ways. Worship of giving is one with, material and and with finances. But, God, I I pray that throughout the week, you would be working in us our desire, a desire to to want to to give and and worship in other other ways too. And I'm praying that you'd reveal more and more what those things are as as we realize who we are and how we're wired and all those things.
17:20
God, there's so much work to be done. There's so many people to be reached to make you known. And so I pray that you would do this. Would you use these gifts to accomplish your work, not just in here, in Jackson, but God to the ends of the earth. We pray this in Christ's name.
17:38
Amen.
17:39
Being out of the saddle this year a couple of different times is weird for me. I'd I'd look back over the calendar last year. I think I preached 47 times. And it's February and I've missed two Sundays already and it feels a little weird getting out of rhythm and back in. Thank you, Carl.
17:52
The message was great. It's up on the web. If anybody wants to hear it from last week, I appreciate that. We are going to pick right back up where we left off in first Corinthians 15 but I had a bud. I had I had a guy.
18:09
I don't want to tell you all about. When I when I did miss a few weeks ago and I went to Shiloh, Georgia where I'm from. I went to a pastor's conference in Florida and then I went to Shiloh and I told y'all that I'd when I got there, they asked me to preach that evening which I had kind of expected but before that, I was just putting gas in the car, little rental car and at the shallow minute mark. Two fifty yards from where I grew up and this guy saw me from across town and walked to me and he came over there. His name is Bud.
18:42
Bud Durham. My brother used to work with him. He used to work for him and he came over and he's he has a very idiosyncratic way of speaking. Very very southern and he he came up and said, who are you? And I said, well, I'm Ray.
18:59
He said, McDaniel, I know that. I can tell that. I could tell that from across town. So, he walked there just because I looked like somebody. He didn't recognize me and so, he said, we don't ever see you around here no more.
19:11
I said, yeah, I've been gone for a couple of years. Fifteen years. He goes, you told me, brother. I said, yep. He said, what you doing now?
19:21
And I said, well, I'm the preacher at the First Baptist Church at Jackson, Wyoming. He backed up and said, praise the Lord. And I thought how how he was literally taken back and Bud did not look good. He didn't look good at all and he told me a pretty sad story about how things have been going in life but when he said, so you've been gone, you're a missionary in Mexico and all this, yes. He said, my son, the first sermon he ever preached was when he was 14 years old and he's now 20 and he's he's preaching at a little bitty church here and so, bud, I I thought, well, that's cool to just reconnect with somebody I haven't seen in many many years.
20:05
I've got another little quick story. So, there are lots of different connections to Monica that I had. This is a hard one. Sorry. There are three funerals that I've been to lately or three funerals that I've been closely associated with lately.
20:30
Bud's was one of em. Monica's was another one and Anthony's was last week. That's where we went last week. Anthony was a a first cousin of Tanya's and we went down to his memorial in Las Vegas. He died in a motorcycle crash last Tuesday night.
20:49
You know, the Tuesday night before and so, There are three different people that I've been really closely associated with lately who have just died all of a sudden. Bud is one of those guys. Bud, when I talked to him, he said, we, he said, so you're preaching? I said, well, bud, I said, is your son, what's what is it? He goes, you know what?
21:12
I'm a believer. I'm a strong believer and he is a strong believer and it's not because of the way that I've lived my life. And it was really really hard to hear but he said, but I know beyond the shadow of a doubt that I'm heaven bound and know beyond the shadow of a doubt that God saved me and it's because of what he has done. We just sang that a minute ago and I thought, what a weird thing for this guy to share with somebody. He hasn't seen in fifteen years and my dad called two weeks ago during the sermon.
21:45
He would never do that normally but I saw my phone go off and it said, Bud died. But Bud died after having told me exactly where where he was going and what he was putting his trust in. This is a weird sermon. It's a weird week for me. I'm just going to admit it straight upfront.
22:03
We're going to go on. The big idea here is that heresy thrives on felt need and incomplete understanding, and this is one of those lateral sermons. I have I have linear slides, but I wanna look at this. Heresy thrives on felt need and incomplete understanding, and some of that always around death, there seems to be this felt need of people to know more than the Bible tells us and people invent things and they come up with things, self chosen opinions because of that incomplete understanding. Now, we know in part but then we shall know as we are known.
22:42
Paul's already been through that. This was our first slide when we started the Corinthians study. The Thessalonians was great, no sin, fertile ground, mission minded. They trusted Paul. No sin was emphasized.
22:56
They weren't selfish but the Corinthians, we started out just talking about how it was full of weeds, factions were dividing, and they questioned Paul's authority, multiple sins throughout, selfish, pretentious, and immature. Well, I'm gonna switch this black white on black shows up better than black and white. So I changed that. We're gonna look at this. I scanned the whole book this week and was just looking through and saw these multiple sins throughout, and here they are.
23:22
Division, disunity, contentiousness, pride, carnality, losing their foundation and walking away from it. And you know what? Just keep on going. Look at this. It keeps on going.
23:34
All throughout. This is what Paul does. Is that ridiculous? We're up to the fifteenth chapter. These are all of the sins that he has pointed out.
23:49
And it keeps going and he stops us right there and he says, denying the truth of the resurrection is the thing that leads to all of these other ones. Every single one of these other ones seems to hinge on this. Denying the truth of the resurrection leads to all kinds of heresies which is self chosen opinions about thing how things work. God has made a way. He has made a way.
24:21
The good news of the gospel is what he started this chapter with that Christ died for sins. He was buried and he was raised again on the third day. This is continuing his argument that the resurrection is the absolute center point of all human history. It is the spiritual deciding factor. Big idea, heresy thrives on felt need and incomplete understanding.
24:44
Paul says in verse 20, this is what I ended with couple weeks ago. In fact, Christ has been raised from the dead. The first fruits, the guarantee of those who have fallen asleep. Then he goes into verse 21, for as by a man came death, by a man has come also the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam, all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive.
25:14
Now, this is the point right here where heresy number one comes in. Heresy number one is a very popular heresy right now. It's been popular in different times throughout history but right now, people tend to overemphasize the love and mercy of a compassionate God and they believe that everyone will eventually be saved unto eternal life. Rob Bell wrote a book a few years ago, Love Wins. I don't know if y'all read it but he said, he uses this verse and several others to point to the fact that all will come to be saved, all.
25:49
No matter who, no matter what, they've done or what they believe that eventually all will come to be saved and that for as in Adam all die, we know that death is a part of life that entered in the garden at Adam's fall. So also in Christ shall all be made alive. Now, the very next verse says, but each in his own order, Christ, the first fruits, then at his coming, those who belong to Christ. So, it's very specific that it's not all. It's saying that all who will be made alive will be made alive in Christ.
26:23
That's the only way that exists. It is an exclusive thing. It is an exclusive gospel. In a multicultural, multi or plural plurality of religions. It sounds harsh in our day and age but it is the only way.
26:44
Each in his own order. Christ the first fruits, then it has come in those who belong to Christ. For as by man came death, I want to look at this. Eternity past, eternity future. If you can use a timeline on something that deals with eternity.
26:59
We're going to start right here. Creation, beginning the time, God makes Adam and we don't know how long he lived in that garden with Eve before they sinned but at some point, the fall of Adam, our federal head, at some point in that garden, he sins and death enters into the world. That's what that says. As by a man came death, by man has also come the resurrection of the dead. As in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive.
27:31
So, we've got creation beginning of time, fall of Adam, death enters, birth of Christ. Oh my goodness, Christmas, the incarnation of God, the word made flesh to dwell among us, lives a perfect life, dies a perfect sacrificial death, was dead, buried, resurrected, and at that point, Paul says, salvation is guaranteed the first fruits. And Jesus ascended, and when he ascended, just before that, he gave us the great commission, go into all the world, baptizing them and teaching them to obey all that I've commanded you. But each in his own order Christ, the first fruits then is coming those who belong to Christ. This is in contrast to the universalism.
28:21
Only those who are in Christ, only those who are in Christ will be raised with him to eternal life. Then comes the end when he delivers the kingdom to God the father after destroying every rule and every authority and power, for he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet. The last enemy to be destroyed is death, For God has put all things in subjection under his feet but when it says all things are put in subjection, it is plain that he's accepted who put all things in subjection under him. That sounds a lot like that. The wine in front of me from the princess bride I mentioned a few weeks ago.
29:00
Do you all know what I'm talking about? It sounds like it's just going round and round and round, but he's saying that then comes the end, the end. This is that great and mighty day of the Lord. When he delivers, Christ delivers the kingdom of God, the father, after destroying every rule and every authority and every power that kingdoms advance. So, the end and then eternity future.
29:26
The end, all that are in Christ will rise with him. When all things are subjected to him, then the son himself will also be subjected to him who put all things in subjection under him, that God may be all in all, that God may be all in all. Eternity future. God is all in all. Right now, there is an enemy.
29:51
Right now, there is an adversary. He's in this world. There's no doubt about it. But this is not the way it will be forever. Sin will not have its way.
30:03
Death will not have its way. Satan will not have his way. God will be all in all. Now, you are here. We have all of these warnings.
30:14
We have everything that Paul has written. We have the gospels. We are between the time that Christ arose and the time that he will come back. Heresy thrives on felt need and incomplete understanding. We do see in part, we do know in part, we do prophecy or proclaim the truth in part.
30:39
We cannot proclaim it all. One of the hardest things to do is preach a funeral. It's not so hard if the person is a believer and you know it, and they knew it. That's not so hard because that's a celebration. If you don't know it though, it is really, really hard.
30:58
Assurance is something that you long for. The next verse kinda captivated my whole attention for the past two weeks. First Corinthians fifteen twenty nine. This is one of those arcane, weird verses. It's a it's a strange verse.
31:17
Otherwise, what do people mean by being baptized on behalf of the dead? If the dead are not raised at all, why are people baptized on their behalf? Ain't that weird? So, Paul's having this argument that he's going this almost legal argument where he says, Christ is crucified for sin, buried, resurrected, and then he goes into and if he hasn't been, then this is true, this is true, this is true, this is true, then he makes a few positive arguments and he goes back to it in this verse and he says, I mean, what do people even mean by being baptized for the dead? He's saying that even these bozos agree that there's a resurrection because they testify to it by the fact that they baptized for their dead.
32:05
Grammatically, I have studied this week and there are 400 possibilities for what this means. I will not go through even 40 of em with you. The King James says, and this is a really good translation of this and I think that this is the key to this. Else, what shall they do which are baptized for the dead if the dead rise not at all? Why are they then baptized for the dead?
32:33
Now, Paul, this whole book, all of those sins I was talking about, that huge list, 70 something sins that he's hit, he's been saying, you, you, you, or we. The whole time, he's been saying, you, Christians, remember how he started off? Grace and peace be to you. He believes that they're believers in Corinth Christians, Christians, you, you, you, and then he includes himself. We, we, we and then he says, I, right after this, but in this, he's not pointing to a Christian practice.
33:07
He's pointing to, what are they? He's distancing himself and them from it. What shall they do which are baptized for the dead if the dead rise not at all? So, this is one weird, arcane, strange verse. Which heresy number two comes from?
33:25
Proxy baptism, the practice of baptizing living people on behalf of dead people to afford them the chance to convert postmortem after death. It is appointed for man once to die and then the judgment. That's pretty clear that you don't get a chance after death, but proxy baptism has been practiced since about 1840 by the Mormon church. This hermeneutically, it's just crazy. This is one verse.
33:59
In an argument where he's saying, this is this is just another argument. People have a sense that there will be a resurrection and so they're doing something. He doesn't say it's good. He doesn't say it's bad. He just says that people are doing it.
34:16
The on behalf of, I will say, grammatically, it can be on behalf of. It can be over. It can be four. There are a lot of different arguments for why this is. I mean, tons of dissertations and monographs and everything have been written about this verse but everybody agrees that it's the only place in the Bible this is ever mentioned.
34:35
Old Testament or New Testament. It was only practiced by a couple of groups that were considered to be heretical groups. The Marcianites and the Corinthians in the 100 and they read this and assumed, hey, we should be doing this. They didn't get the argument. They took it away from its context.
35:00
Felt need and incomplete understanding. Have you all been to a funeral lately where you didn't know if the person was a believer or not a believer? That is one of the most uncomfortable places to be in the world. And when you're there and you're thinking about it, you your soul really cries out for more than we know and so there's a felt need there. I've got to have something.
35:26
Joseph Smith took this verse and at a funeral, the first time that this was ever practiced, it was at a funeral by someone who had not been baptized. And he said this, that proxy baptism is the greatest responsibility in this world which God has laid upon us. Not the advance of the kingdom, not the advance of the gospel. This proxy baptism is the greatest responsibility in this world that God has laid upon Can you get that? From that one verse where he doesn't say that the people were Christians, that it was a proper practice, it was a good thing.
36:07
No. Heresy thrives on felt need. I've gotta answer this question about the destiny of this person's soul. I've gotta do something about it. I need a religious way of doing something that can help that person.
36:23
I wanna do something. Not what God has said. It is by belief. It's by trust and what Christ has done in this life. I will go into heresy three, purgatory.
36:39
A place or a condition of temporal punishment for a Christian's soul to be cleansed of his sins that had not been fully satisfied during this life. There is nowhere in the Bible that mentions purgatory ever, but it's somewhere else that we feel the need to do something, to create a doctrine, but that in itself says that the sacrifice of Christ is not enough, that I have to do something if I didn't do, and it's not about that. Reincarnation, heresy four. The idea that one will come back after death as something or someone else. All these are seeking to fulfill that felt need, but they come from a place of incomplete understanding.
37:22
What God has given us is the gospel. Christ dead, buried, raised again. That's what we have and here you are. Between the time that Paul writes this, between the time that the gospel writers write it, and the time when Jesus comes back. Now, as I was looking through this and I was thinking, you know, preaching sermons and preaching funerals, this is one of my favorite verses.
37:49
I love this. Let the redeemed of the Lord say so, whom he hath redeemed from the hand of the enemy. Let him say so. So, today, right now, as a matter of fact, the only point of this whole sermon is for you to say so. Tell somebody that loves you, that is gonna be sitting there at your funeral.
38:08
Tell them that you believe in Jesus, that you trust in his sacrifice as sufficient for every sin you've ever committed, that he is the one who has redeemed you. Bud left a message on my phone after I got back here. Which I played for Carl and Renzi and said, pray for Bud and Bud is right now present with the Lord and I have every confidence that Anthony is too but it's so much more comforting if you know. I want to tell all of y'all right now. I believe in Jesus, okay?
38:44
I'm telling you that there's a song, let the blood of Calvary speak for me. It says, when the harvest has been gathered and all my work is done, when the last mile is traveled and I've sung my final song. When I'm called to give an answer, at heaven's judgment seat, just let the blood of Calvary speak for me. There is nothing good that I have done to deserve it. There may be a friend who'd witness and speak a word so kind but their voices would seem so feeble at such an awesome time.
39:19
When I'm called to give an answer at heaven's judgment seat, just let the blood of Calvary speak for me. In Jesus name, would y'all stand up? And before the band starts playing, tell somebody if you believe in Jesus.
39:33
What a great message. What a great message. Remember the song that we sang? We're not gonna sing that one again, but it's not because of who I am, but because of what you've done. It's not because of what I've I've done, but because of who you are.
39:49
We're trusting solely in the work of Jesus. John five twenty four, truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgement but has passed from death to life. Let's sing blessed assurance.
40:34
Or know this be her air or washed in his blood. This is our story and it's our song. Let's sing. This is my story. This is my song, raising my savior all the day long.
40:56
This is my story. This is my song, praising my savior all the day long. Perfect submission, all is at risk. I am my savior, not being there watching and waiting, looking up, filled with his goodness. I lost his love.
41:43
It's our story, our song. This is my story. This is my song, raising my
42:25
Amen. Lord, would you please, lord, bless us this week. So often we hear from evangel evangelistical gatherings that we should be asking people if they knew where they'd spend eternity lord. Would you turn that around on us and just let us let people know that we do know? I'm gripped by it lord.
42:52
Let the redeemed of the Lord say so. In Jesus name, amen. Amen. Had three different people that have made an impact and one of em is Bud. Bud is a guy.
43:06
When I went recently, I said I've missed a couple Sundays already here. I went to Shiloh, Georgia which is where I'm from after the pastor's conference in Jacksonville and I was pumping gas, just putting gas in the car in Shiloh, Georgia at the Shiloh Minute Mark, two fifty yards from the house I grew up in and a guy saw me from across town. A shallow is three miles wide, three miles long and half a mile wide and he saw me from across the way and he walked all the way over there slowly and just about time I was finishing pumping up the gas, he said, who are you? And I said, well, I'm Ray. He goes, McDaniel, I could tell that from across the street because we all look alike and he said, I ain't seen you around a long time.
43:57
You're Toby's brother, right? I said, yes. He said, I see Toby from time to time. He said, what is it you're doing now? You haven't been around here in how long?
44:05
I said, fifteen years and he said, what is it you're doing? I said, well, I'm the pastor at the First Baptist Church of Jackson, Wyoming and he literally backed up two steps and said, praise the Lord. Which I thought, that's kind of cool and then I talked to him for a little longer than that and he said, my son has been, he said, the first time he got a chance ever to preach, he was 14 years old and it was a youth Sunday or something. So, he preached and now, he's 20 years old, Bud said about his son, 20 years old. Now, he's preaching in a regular on a regular basis for this tiny little church and he said, well, I'm glad to hear it.
44:45
That was his, that's, that was his thing about me. I said, well, I am too. I'm I'm loving it. I'm enjoying it. Didn't expect to enjoy the preaching, didn't expect that so much.
44:53
He said, well, he said, not because of anything I've ever done. Gonna make me cry, bud. Not because of anything I've ever done but because of what Jesus did, I know I'm his and I thought, how profound? I hadn't seen this guy in fifteen years and he comes to me and that's that's the conversation we had and then, he asked me for my phone number and I thought that was kind of strange but he wanted it and so he he's called me several times since I came back. He called me two or three times and I I called him back.
45:25
Got a message that I saved on my phone from him and he just said, we're proud of you. We love you and I thought, man, bud. That's one guy. Another one, last weekend, you know, we went to Las Vegas for a memorial for a funeral for Tanya's first cousin, Anthony and Anthony is a great great guy and we loved him. Tanya always had a very special close connection with Anthony her whole life.
45:58
He was, she was 14 when he was born and he they had grown up. He had grown up with her. I've been in this family since he was six years old and we were going down for this funeral and it was a very sudden thing. He died in a motorcycle crash two Tuesday nights ago and it was all of a sudden life stopped. The other one was Monica who was in housekeeping at the hospital and I used to see her all the time because I visit people at the hospital a lot.
46:34
And she was a housekeeper for Greg and Deborah Buckingham at their house. And she moved out here when my brother-in-law and his dad, when they moved out to start a business, she and her husband moved out. And all these connections to this lady, I barely knew her. Knew her, didn't even really know her name but I just knew her in passing and knew her to see her only and I ended up preaching at her funeral two weeks ago. Bud had that spontaneous conversation with me and a couple weeks ago while I was preaching, I'd only been home a week and a half from that trip to Florida and Georgia and my phone buzzed during the service which is nobody, you don't call a preacher during the service, you know?
47:20
But my dad had texted which he never does and it said, Bud died. Yep. So, this is why this is a weird setup like I said for a sermon. When people die and when they die suddenly, there is such great comfort and assurance in knowing that where their faith was. And when there's not that, it can be very very uncomfortable and very difficult.
47:46
So, the big idea here, this this may sound very strange but the big idea here is that heresy thrives on felt need and incomplete understanding. Now, all of us understand incompletely. Paul has just covered that in the 13 chapter 13, the love chapter. He says, now we know in part and we proclaim in part but then, we shall know just as we are known by God himself and so our our understanding will one day be complete but the felt need for doing something religious is very very strong and it makes us do very unusual and strange things and I just want to go back for a minute. So, the Thessalonian Church, remember when we were in Thessalonians and there was no sin and it was just great.
48:41
They're knocking it out of the park, doing everything fantastic. It was fertile ground for the gospel. They're mission minded. They trusted Paul's authority and he was so proud of them and you could tell the love that they had for him and he had for them. There was no sin emphasized whatsoever, not selfish.
48:55
They were sincere and they cared about others. Now, at the end of the Thessalonian letters, we had that section about, I don't want you to be ignorant about the people who have fallen asleep in Christ. You remember that? That's one of the greatest areas of comfort. I I have been using that one a lot lately in these funerals but the Corinthian church, my goodness, it's full of weeds, factions, divided them.
49:18
There some of them were questioned in Paul's authority. There are multiple sins throughout and they were very selfish and pretentious and immature and we've seen that because we've been going with them for 15 chapters now. Now, change this one over to white on black shows up better on the screen. So, I just changed it over but the multiple sins throughout, I want you to look at this. So, these multiple sins that Paul's mentioning in Corinth are division, disunity, contentiousness, pride, but look at how many of em there are.
49:48
Losing their foundation is very very important and walking away from it. He says at the very beginning, you who are redeemed and sanctified. You who are Christians and he says that and then he says, we, including himself and them together as we are believers, we are. But the losing their foundation and walking away from it is something that's really big but look at how many. He goes on.
50:15
Defiling their temples, worldly, proud, puffed up, sexually immoral. Look at how this goes on. Yeah. It's a lot. Denying the truth of the resurrection though is the last one that we came to and that he says that that in itself leads to all of that other stuff.
50:47
Dostoevsky said that if if there is no god, then all things are permissible to me. You remember his often quoted refrain from one of their letters to him that all things are permissible to me. If there is no truth in the resurrection or if they deny the truth of the resurrection, then whatever else goes and he saw that and so he's pointing to, this is your problem. You've walked away from your foundation. You've walked away from the thing that's important.
51:17
You're trying to come up with different ways of explaining. Heresies, I mentioned a few weeks back is a self chosen opinion and heresy thrives on felt need and an incomplete understanding. This this sermon could be about the sufficiency of God's word and that's one way that I was thinking about preaching it because this is what we have. The 66 books of this Bible is what we have. This is the truth.
51:45
It could be about the sufficiency of Christ because we don't need to invent heresies and ways of making our self feel better about those who have passed. Heresy thrives on felt need and incomplete understanding. Honestly, one verse out of all these that we're studying today eclipsed everything else for me and I kind of threw myself in the verse 29 but we're going to go before that. We'll get verse 20 is what we close with the other week. He's made an argument that Christ died for our sin, was buried, and raised the third day and that's it.
52:18
That's the gospel right there. And then he makes these arguments that and if he hasn't, then we're still in our sin that we're most to be pitied indeed. All of these things and then he gets to this and like I said, verse 20 flips everything up down upside down because in fact, Christ has been raised from the dead. He is the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep and we talked about first fruits being the guarantee that more was to come. So, Christ is the first fruits, the first one of those who have fallen asleep, died, buried, and resurrected.
52:52
So, here we are in '21. For as by a man came death, by a man has come also the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam, all die, so also in Christ, shall all be made alive. The all there leads us to heresy number one. Heresy number one is a popular heresy right now.
53:17
It's a very popular thing. There's a book written a couple of years ago called Love Wins by Rob Bell and he is saying that eventually, God will save absolutely everybody no matter what they believe, no matter what they do, no matter how they treated his son or the gospel in this life. Everybody will eventually be saved. The belief that everyone will be saved to eternal life is universalism and it is hogwash, heresy. This verse for as in Adam all die and we do know that all are going to die.
53:54
That's we've it's appointed for man wants to die and then the judgment, right? We know that and we know that death entered through one man, Adam. So, also in Christ shall all be made alive. This next verse sheds some more light on it. It says, each in his own order, Christ, the first fruits, then at his coming, those who belong to Christ.
54:17
As by amen came death. So, let's look at this. Timelines, y'all love timelines. You've told me you do anyway. Eternity past, eternity future.
54:28
Creation, the beginning of time is right there and we don't really know how long it was between the time God created the world and created Adam and Eve and then when the fall was. We don't know what the time period was there but eventually, Adam did sin and that is where death entered. They were expelled from the garden and death entered right there. For as in Adam all die, he was our federal head, theologians call it and in him, we all sinned. Adam ate the apple and our teeth still ache.
55:04
As in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive. So, we have from creation in the fall, we have the span of time before the birth of Christ, the incarnation of God. Thirty years approximately before the crucifixion, he lived a perfect life. He died a perfect sacrificial death. He was buried and resurrected and Paul says, first fruits, salvation right there is guaranteed in the resurrection.
55:37
Jesus' ascension just before he ascended, he gave us the great commission and said, for us to go and teach people to obey all that he has commanded us. This ascension is important too. Each in his own order Christ, the first fruits, then at the coming, those who belong to Christ and then comes the end. When he delivers the kingdom of God, the father, to God the father after destroying every rule and every authority and every power for he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet. The last enemy to be destroyed is death.
56:15
And death is the one that because in the last three weeks, I've been a part of three different funerals. It's the one that this idea of heresy is so closely connected with things that we feel so deeply need an exact understanding. We have ambiguity about death. We don't like it and so we try to invent some things. The last enemy to be destroyed is death.
56:41
For God has put all things in subjection under his feet but when it says all things are put in subjection, it is plain that he is accepted who put all things in subjection under him. He's talking about God has put all things in subjection under Christ's feet. It's plain that he's accepted who put all things under subjection to him. This end right there, the end is when all in Christ will arise. So, the Lord will descend and we will be caught up with him in the air who are his, the in Christ.
57:16
When all things are subjected to him, then the son himself will also be subjected to him who put all things in subjection under him that God may be all in all. Some of that is just sounds like gobbledygook and I realize that it's hard to follow but he's saying that at the end, then Jesus will come back for his own and then, it will be the blissful, eternal existence of those who are called by his name and that is also the place where the eternity of torment begins for those who are not his. It's a difficult thing but so that God may be all in all. An in unhindered by Satan, unhindered by evil, unhindered by sin, we will be with him. Those of us who believe in him.
58:04
So, God is all in all into eternity future and you are here. This is to me, the more I thought about it, the more I thought about this timeline. We are between a time where we do have this Bible. We do have the word of God. We have it and we're sure Paul has written us about how important it is about the resurrection.
58:30
He's written how important it is, the crucifixion. And it's not yet when Christ has come back. We're in this weird place in history where we know this and we can make this decision based on the facts. We've got it written down right here. Now, the big idea, heresy thrives on felt need and incomplete understanding.
58:52
This next verse is aggravating. Grammatically, it's ambiguous. It's just a weird verse. It seems unusual. It seems out of context a little bit.
59:04
If you're reading along, you've got this argument for death, burial, and resurrection of Christ and then as you go forward, he's arguing for it and he digresses a bit right here and he says, otherwise, what do people mean by being baptized on behalf of the dead? If the dead are not raised at all, why are people baptized on their behalf? And we go, what? Why would anybody be baptized for the dead? That doesn't make any sense.
59:28
It doesn't go along with anything else in the New Testament at all. There's not a single other instance of baptism for the dead in old or New Testament anywhere. This is one grammatically ambiguous weirdo verse. Else what shall they do which are baptized for the dead? If the dead rise not at all, why are they then baptized for the dead?
59:51
Remember I said that Paul was saying throughout you and we and I. He's been saying that first person, second person the whole time. You, I, we, and he has not been using they a whole lot. Well, he uses they here. He's saying that these people, I'm writing to Christians.
1:00:12
This is somebody else but he's making an argument something like this. He's going on and on about the resurrection and if we're, if Christ has not been resurrected, we're most to be pitied indeed. All of these things and then, he says, but in fact, Christ has been raised and then he digresses. One more time and when he digresses, he said, even these bozos, they're looking forward to resurrection and they wouldn't even be baptizing for the dead. Does that make sense to you?
1:00:37
Are you with me? There are 400 grammatical possibilities for what this first means. 400 have been proposed. 400 and something. I won't even go over four of em with you.
1:00:48
It's one verse. Heresy number two comes from this verse. Proxy baptism. This is the practice of baptizing living people on behalf of dead people to afford them the chance to convert postmortem. This is hogwash.
1:01:05
This is heresy. This is very hard to take because that one verse, this is it. That one verse is the only one that says anything about it. There is no archaeological proof. There's no biblical proof.
1:01:18
There's nothing else anywhere that says that there were Christians that were baptized for the dead in the time of the New Testament. Now, in about a hundred and forty AD, fifty something years after the last of the New Testament books was written. There was a group called the Marcianites and Marcian had his own canon, 10 of the letters of Paul, and the Gospel of Luke. That was it. That was his Bible.
1:01:45
He threw out the Old Testament completely feeling like that God of wrath was not even related at all to the New Testament God of love. So, he had no Old Testament, 10 of Paul's letters, and an edited copy of Luke. That's what he took and they believe that people could be converted postmortem and they did baptism for the dead but they did it based on this one verse. The on behalf of is the main thing that people argue over because it's hooper. Hooper is the word there and it can mean on behalf of, it can mean for, it can also mean over.
1:02:25
So, this, like I said, the grammatical ambiguities here are compounded. His argument though is the resurrection is something that is self evident. It is going to come to pass. I want you to see this. Because of where we live right here, it's a very very much a a Mormon background.
1:02:50
In this valley, all the way down towards Las Vegas, the I 15 Corridor all the way to Canada to Las Vegas is a very is a Mormon stronghold. Joseph Smith said about baptism for the dead. From this one verse, first Corinthians fifteen twenty nine is the only verse in the Bible that talks about this at all. He says that this is the greatest responsibility in the world that God has laid upon us. Is that ridiculous?
1:03:17
You know, when he said this and when he said that it needed to be done, he was preaching a funeral. He was preaching a funeral and it was somebody that he felt like was a good follower of his teaching but had never had the opportunity to be baptized and so he held on to because of this felt need for this guy because he believed that you must be born of water in the spirit and he believed that to mean baptism, not birth and rebirth. Baptism in water, baptism. So they started the practice of baptism for the dead in around the eighteen forties. So for past hundred and sixty something, hundred and seventy something years, there it's it's not a revival.
1:04:00
It's not something from old, you know, New Testament days that is revived. It's something that a heresy from the one forties did and the one fifties, the Corinthians also did that. But the Mormon church sees this as the greatest responsibility in the world that God has laid upon us. That's why the genealogy is so incredibly important to Mormons. They're baptizing people for the dead.
1:04:27
Adolf Hitler has been baptized. All of the American statesmen, pretty much everybody, they have attempted to baptize him for the dead and they're very specific that but they still have the choice after death, postmortem conversion. They could still choose to not accept it. It's just weird to me that heresy thrives on this felt need. We need to be able to do something and our incomplete understanding and we all have incomplete understanding.
1:05:05
I I hope that this comes across as loving as I mean it to, that we cannot see it all, but we do have this. We do have what's written here. Heresy three, purgatory. A place or a condition of temporal punishment for a Christian soul to be cleansed of sins that had not been fully satisfied during this life. And when cross of when that Christ died on the cross and when he said it is finished, did he mean it?
1:05:37
He meant it. There is nothing that we can do to earn it. There's nothing that we can do to earn the absolution of our sins. Heresy four, reincarnation. These are all connected to death.
1:05:55
The idea that one will come back after death is something or someone else. That is not biblical in any way. There's not anything that points to it at all. Some people have proposed that John the Baptist coming back as Elijah. I mean, Elijah coming back as John the Baptist would be the only possible one biblically but it's not.
1:06:15
Our felt need to be able to put that grief somewhere to feel like that person is better off after death is what drives some very unusual and strange, weird beliefs. And we spun out of control on some of these. You're here. You have the gospels. You have Paul's writings.
1:06:40
You have all four gospels. They're not edited. You have everything that God says, the sufficiency of his word, the sufficiency of scripture, the sufficiency of Christ in his satisfactory atonement, his vicarious atonement for you. You have everything that you need to make the decision to put your trust and your faith in him. And it's before the end and it's before your death right now.
1:07:11
Now, bud, I was so glad that I talked to bud. I'm so glad he crossed the street to tell me that. I I do have confidence that Anthony is in heaven. I do have that confidence but the whole point of this sermon this morning in the first service, they laughed about it. Mine, my whole point this morning is this, I can't tell you the joy I was filled with to know that Bud is with Jesus.
1:07:37
Bud had had a hard time in this life but he's not having a hard time now. Let the redeemed of the Lord say so. Whom he hath redeemed from the hand of the enemy, let him say so. Today, would you please give give the satisfaction to me and to the people who love you to just say to the people who love you that I put my faith in Jesus. I'm saying it to y'all right now.
1:08:05
I put my faith in Jesus. That's it. I I think of the song. It's called Let the Blood of Calvary Speak for Me. When the harvest has been gathered and all my work is done, when the last mile is traveled and I've sung my final song, when I'm called to give an answer at heaven's judgment seat, just let the blood of Calvary speak for me.
1:08:28
There may be some friends who'd witness and speak a word so kind, but their voices would seem so feeble at such an awesome time. When I'm called to give an answer at heaven's judgment seat, let the blood of Calvary speak for me. There's nothing that I've done to deserve his salvation, but it is accessible to me and I can accept it and I do. So would you tell somebody, and I mean it, right now. When Judy's coming up and we're going to start playing, would you just turn to your loved one and say, that's me.
1:08:58
I trust Jesus. It's not anything that I've done but I trust him. A lot of times in evangelism explosion and in other evangelism focuses that we've gone through over the years. It's been to ask somebody, do you know where you would go if you were to die tonight where you would spend eternity and that's fine but let's turn that around backwards though and just say, if you do know, tell em that. I do know where I would go.
1:09:26
Would you stand with me and we're going to sing, turn your eyes upon Jesus.
