Heresy Thrives on Felt Need

A study guide · February 22, 2015 · 1 Corinthians

In one paragraph

Pastor Ray opened this message from 1 Corinthians 15 in the middle of a hard stretch of weeks: three people connected to him and Tanya had died in rapid succession, including a man named Bud who had told Ray exactly where his trust was placed, and then died shortly after. That personal weight shaped everything that followed. The big idea he kept returning to was this: heresy thrives on felt need...

Read together

  1. 1 Corinthians 15:20 Christ raised as first fruits, guarantee of those who have fallen asleep
  2. 1 Corinthians 15:21-22 as by a man came death, by a man came resurrection; as in Adam all die, so in Christ all made alive
  3. 1 Corinthians 15:23 each in his own order, Christ first fruits, then at his coming those who belong to Christ
  4. 1 Corinthians 15:24-27 then comes the end, he delivers the kingdom to the Father after destroying every rule and authority, last enemy destroyed is death
  5. 1 Corinthians 15:28 when all things subjected to him, the Son also subjected, that God may be all in all
  6. 1 Corinthians 15:29 what do people mean by being baptized on behalf of the dead, used to address proxy baptism heresy
  7. Hebrews 9:27 it is appointed for man once to die and then the judgment, used against postmortem conversion
  8. John 5:24 whoever hears my word and believes has eternal life and has passed from death to life
  9. Psalm 107:2 let the redeemed of the Lord say so, whom he hath redeemed from the hand of the enemy

Talk about it

  1. Pastor Ray described heresy as a 'self-chosen opinion' that thrives on felt need and incomplete understanding. Where have you seen that pattern show up, either in beliefs you've encountered or in your own thinking when you were facing something painful or uncertain?
  2. Pastor Ray walked through the timeline from creation to eternity future and argued that 'each in his own order, those who belong to Christ' makes universalism impossible. How do you personally hold together the exclusivity of the gospel with genuine love for people you are not sure are believers?
  3. Looking at the long list of sins Paul addressed in Corinth, Pastor Ray said that denying the resurrection is what leads to all the others. Do you agree that what we believe about the resurrection shapes everything else about how we live? Why or why not?
  4. Pastor Ray talked about how uncomfortable it is to sit at a funeral not knowing where the person stood with Jesus, and how that discomfort can drive people toward proxy baptism, purgatory, reincarnation, and other inventions. How do you sit with that discomfort without reaching for something the Bible does not offer?
  5. The closing challenge was simple: tell the people who love you that you trust Jesus, so they do not have to wonder. Who in your life does not know where you stand, and what is keeping you from telling them?
