In one paragraph

This message came from the "Harmony of the Gospels" series and covered Jesus cleansing the temple and cursing the fig tree, the events of Holy Monday, the day after the triumphal entry. Pastor Carl argued that Jesus is a purifier, and that what he did in the temple that week was exactly what the prophet Malachi said he would do. The sermon pressed the congregation to ask what Jesus might want to...

Read together

  1. John 2:13-22 first temple cleansing, Jesus drives out sellers and money changers, disciples remember Psalm 69, Jesus speaks of raising the temple in three days
  2. John 20:31 John states his gospel was written so that readers may believe and have life in Jesus' name
  3. John 2:11 first disciples came to believe in Jesus at the wedding at Cana
  4. Psalm 69 disciples remembered it was written, zeal for your house will consume me
  5. Malachi 3:1-3 messenger prepares the way, Lord comes suddenly to his temple, he is like a refiner's fire and will purify the sons of Levi
  6. Mark 11:12-13 Jesus finds a fig tree in leaf but no fruit, it was not the season for figs
  7. Isaiah 56:7 Jesus quotes my house will be called a house of prayer for all the nations
  8. Isaiah 56:1-8 God promises to bring foreigners and eunuchs to his holy mountain, his house a house of prayer for all peoples
  9. Jeremiah 7:1-11 God warns Judah to amend their ways, asks has this house become a den of robbers, which Jesus quotes against the chief priests and scribes
  10. Micah 6:8 to do justice, to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God, recalled when reading Isaiah 56:1
  11. Psalm 67 read responsively as a prayer for God to bless his people so all nations may know him
  12. Psalm 139 search me, oh God, and know my heart today, basis for the closing hymn Cleanse Me
  13. Matthew 5:16 let your light shine before others so they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven, spoken as benediction

Talk about it

  1. The pastor said he believes Jesus cleansed the temple twice, once early in his ministry and once in the final week before the cross. What details from the two accounts struck you as different, and does the distinction change how you read either story?
  2. Isaiah 56 describes God welcoming foreigners and eunuchs, people who would have felt like outsiders, into his house of prayer. Who are the people today who might feel like they are on the outside looking in, and what does that passage say to them?
  3. Jesus quoted Jeremiah 7 when he called the temple a den of robbers, and D. A. The preacher described it as a warning against superstitious reverence for a holy place while holding onto wickedness that dishonors it. Where do you see that tension showing up in your own life or in church culture?
  4. The pastor asked directly: if your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, what might Jesus be trying to forcibly drive out of your life right now? How did you sit with that question during the sermon?
  5. The fig tree was full of leaves but had no fruit, and the pastor connected that to the triumphal entry being a big show that turned to 'crucify him' by the end of the week. What does fruitless religious activity look like in practice, and how do you tell the difference between genuine faith and a good-looking show?
