In one paragraph
The message traced the Greek word peripateo, "to walk," through John 6 and its parallel accounts in Mark and Matthew, asking whether we will walk with Jesus the way he actually is rather than for what we want him to do for us. Pastor Blake used the feeding of the 5,000, Jesus walking on water, and the Bread of Life discourse to show a single through-line: crowds followed Jesus for the wrong...
Read together
- Psalm 150 opening call to worship, let everything that has breath praise the Lord
- John 8:36 if the Son sets you free, you are free indeed, tied to baptism song
- Psalm 23 even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, his presence drives out fear
- Amos 3:3 can two walk together unless they be agreed, rhetorical question about walking with God
- Deuteronomy 18:15 Moses said the Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me
- John 6:26-65 discourse on the bread of life, assigned as homework
- John 6:66-69 many disciples leave, Peter confesses you have the words of eternal life
Talk about it
- Pastor Blake pointed out that the crowd wanted to make Jesus king because of what he could do for them, not because of who he is. Where do you notice that temptation in your own life, wanting Jesus for what he provides rather than for himself?
- Mark tells us the disciples gained nothing from the feeding of the five thousand, and their hearts were hardened, even after watching Jesus calm a storm before. Why do you think it is so hard for us to carry forward what God has already shown us?
- Peter stepped out of the boat when Jesus said come, but took his eyes off Jesus when he saw the wind and began to sink. Can you think of a time when focusing on the circumstances around you pulled your attention away from Christ?
- Pastor Blake said that the contrary wind experience may actually be better for us even though Christ could relieve it immediately. Do you agree with that? What has a season of rowing against the wind taught you that calm water could not?
- After the hard teaching on the bread of life, many disciples walked away, and Jesus asked the twelve, you do not want to leave also, do you? Peter answered, Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. What keeps you walking with Jesus when his teachings are difficult or his ways do not match what you were hoping for?
