Joy Despite Imprisonment

A study guide · July 5, 2026 · Philippians

Watch or read it

In one paragraph

The guest preacher (whose wife Lauren read the Scripture) walked First B Jackson through Philippians 1:3-11, the opening paragraph of a letter Paul wrote from prison to a church he loved deeply. He traced Paul's gratitude for the Philippians, his confidence that God would finish the work He started in them, and his prayer that their love would grow not as a vague feeling but paired with knowledge...

Read together

  1. Philippians 1:3-11 main text of the sermon, read aloud and expounded throughout
  2. Acts 16 background on the founding of the Philippian church, including Lydia, the slave girl, and the jailer
  3. 2 Corinthians 8:1-9 used to illustrate the Philippian church's generosity and sacrificial giving despite poverty and affliction
  4. 1 Corinthians 13 referenced to show that without love, knowledge and other gifts amount to nothing

Talk about it

  1. Paul was joyful and thankful for the church in Philippi even while sitting in prison. What does that tell us about where he was finding his joy, and what does that challenge in the way you normally look for joy?
  2. The sermon described koinonia as more than just partnership, including friendship, co-laboring, and shared mission. When you think about your relationships inside this church, do they feel more like casual coffee or something closer to what Paul is describing? What makes the difference?
  3. Paul was confident that God would complete the work He started in the Philippians, but the sermon also said that assurance does not lead to laziness. How do you hold those two things together in your own walk?
  4. The sermon laid out what happens when you have knowledge and discernment without love, and what happens when you have love without knowledge and discernment. Which side do you think you lean toward, and what does that cost you or the people around you?
  5. Carolyn's example was held up of someone who, even in her last days, is pressing on to share the gospel rather than pulling back. What does that kind of faithfulness look like in the ordinary rhythms of your own life right now?
