In one paragraph

The pastor opened Hebrews 7:1-10 after building toward it for several weeks, and the sermon centers on who Melchizedek was, what the text actually says about him, and why the writer of Hebrews brings him up at all. The driving concern throughout is staying inside what scripture says rather than going beyond it, especially with a figure as mysterious as this one. The sermon began by placing...

Read together

  1. Genesis 14:17-20 Primary Old Testament text about Melchizedek meeting Abraham, receiving tithes and blessing him
  2. Psalm 110:4 The Lord swears that the Messiah is a priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek
  3. John 8:31-59 Read at length to show Jews clinging to Abraham while Jesus argued he was greater than Abraham
  4. John 17 Jesus's high priestly prayer cited for the phrase sanctify them by your truth, your word is truth
  5. Hebrews 7:1-10 The passage under study, presenting Melchizedek as priest and king superior to Abraham

Talk about it

  1. Pastor Kyle said the writer of Hebrews calls Melchizedek's lack of recorded genealogy significant, and that 'heresy always thrives when there is scarce biblical evidence and felt need.' Where have you seen that play out, either in something you've encountered or in your own thinking about a passage?
  2. Pastor Kyle urged the congregation to stay with what the text actually says about Melchizedek rather than leaping to conclusions, even appealing ones like the pre-incarnate Christ. How do you personally guard against reading into a passage what you want to find there?
  3. In John 8, Jesus tells the crowd that Abraham 'rejoiced to see our day' and that before Abraham was born, 'I am.' The crowd could not receive that because, as Pastor Kyle put it, they were 'stuck in their own opinion.' What things in our own backgrounds or traditions can act like that, making it hard to hear what Scripture is actually saying?
  4. Pastor Kyle described someone who shifted from praying 'God, if this is your will, I want it' to 'God, I want your will, show me and I will walk in it,' and then something unexpected opened up. Have you experienced a moment where letting go of your expected outcome led somewhere you did not anticipate?
  5. At communion Pastor Kyle prayed that the congregation would 'no longer denominate but move toward the center of the gospel.' With thirty-something denominations represented on a given Sunday, what does it look like in practice to hold your tradition loosely without just abandoning what you believe to be true?
