Watch or read it

In one paragraph

Mahindra, a missionary from Durban, South Africa and longtime friend of First B, brought the message this past Sunday. Drawing from John 13, he walked through Jesus washing the disciples' feet on the night before His death and showed what that scene says about the nature of real ministry. He has spent thirty-two years with Crossroads KwaZulu-Natal, and the stories he told came straight from that...

Read together

  1. John 13:1-5, 12-17 primary text read aloud, Jesus washing the disciples' feet and commanding them to do likewise
  2. Isaiah 53 mentioned as giving a rendering of the life of Christ in connection with the servant of all
  3. John 3:16 quoted to show God's love in giving his only begotten Son
  4. John 3:17 quoted to show Christ came not to condemn the world but to save it
  5. Romans 5:8 quoted to show God demonstrated his love in that while we were yet sinners Christ died for us

Talk about it

  1. Mahindra said that Jesus washing the disciples' feet was his way of telling them, indirectly, 'this is what your life is going to look like.' Where in your own life have you resisted or been slow to accept that kind of downward call?
  2. Mahindra asked, 'What is your water bucket and towel?' meaning the ordinary, everyday thing God has put in your hands right now. What is yours, and what would it look like to draw God into it?
  3. Mahindra prays each morning to be 'profoundly aware of God's presence' so he does not miss the opportunities God places in front of him. What gets in the way of that kind of awareness for you during a normal week?
  4. The story of Baba Johannes shows a man who heard God and acted, and whose obedience changed many lives before he died just six months later. What does that story stir up in you about faithfulness and outcomes?
  5. Mahindra closed with the idea that 'we love people until they ask us why.' Can you think of a time when someone showed you that kind of unexplained love, or when you showed it to someone else? What happened?
