In one paragraph

This message came from Hebrews 1:4 through 2:1, with Pastor Carl walking the congregation through the author's argument that Jesus is superior to the angels. Before getting into the text, he shared photographs and a detailed account of the church's mission trip to Gillette, Wyoming, where a team helped a church plant led by Scott Eichen prepare its building for its first service. The sermon closed...

Read together

  1. Hebrews 1:1-4 Read aloud as the Exordium, the introduction to Hebrews, describing Jesus as the radiance of God's glory and exact representation of His nature
  2. Hebrews 1:5 "For to which of the angels did He ever say, You are My Son, today I have begotten You" - used to show Jesus is superior to angels
  3. Hebrews 2:1-3 "For this reason we must pay closer attention to what we have heard so that we do not drift away" - the application and warning passage
  4. Psalm 2:7 "You are My Son, today I have begotten You" - cited as backing for Hebrews 1:5
  5. 2 Samuel 7:14 "I will be a father to him and he shall be a son to me" - cited to show the Davidic line pointing to Jesus
  6. Psalm 97:7 "Worship Him all you gods" - cited in context of angels being commanded to worship Jesus
  7. Psalm 104:4 "He makes the winds His messengers and flaming fire His ministers" - cited to show angels as servants doing God's will
  8. Psalm 45:6-7 "Your throne, O God, is forever and ever" and "You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness, therefore God has anointed You" - cited to show Jesus elevated above all companions
  9. Isaiah 61:1-3 The suffering servant passage, cited in relation to the anointing of the Messiah and the oil of gladness
  10. Luke 4:17-21 Jesus reads from Isaiah 61 in the Nazareth synagogue, stops at "the favorable year of the Lord" and declares the scripture fulfilled
  11. Psalm 102:25-27 "Of old You founded the earth and heavens are the work of Your hands, they will perish but You remain" - cited to show the eternal nature of Christ
  12. Isaiah 51:6 "Lift up your eyes to the sky...the sky will vanish like smoke and the earth will wear out like a garment...but My salvation will be forever" - cited alongside Psalm 102
  13. Psalm 110:1 "The Lord says to my Lord, sit at My right hand until I make Your enemies a footstool" - cited to show Jesus seated at God's right hand, superior to angels
  14. Hebrews 13:8 "Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever" - cited as the other end of the chiastic structure matching Psalm 102
  15. Deuteronomy 33:2 "The Lord came from Sinai...He came from the midst of ten thousand holy ones" - cited to show angels as holy ones associated with the giving of the law
  16. Galatians 3:19 "Why the law then? It was added because of transgressions, having been ordained through angels" - cited to show the law was given through angelic agency
  17. Acts 7:51-53 Stephen's speech accusing the Jews of resisting the Holy Spirit and receiving the law as ordained by angels
  18. Psalm 103:20-22 "Bless the Lord you His angels, mighty in strength, who perform His word" - cited to show angels as ministering servants of God
  19. 2 Timothy 1:12 "I know whom I have believed" - cited as the source of the hymn sung during the service
  20. John 1:1 "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God" - cited in relation to Jesus upholding all things by His word

Talk about it

  1. Pastor Nathan described how the people of that time had become so focused on angels as messengers that they were missing the message those angels were carrying. Where in your own life do you find yourself paying more attention to something that points to God than to God himself?
  2. The author of Hebrews builds his entire case for Jesus being better than angels by walking through scriptures his readers already knew and believed. How does it change the way you read the Old Testament to see it as something that was always pointing toward Jesus?
  3. Pastor Nathan quoted John Piper's idea that in the Christian life there is only forward or reverse, no neutral, and that if you stop actively moving toward God in a culture that runs the other direction, you drift. Do you agree with that picture? What does drifting look like in practice?
  4. Jesus read from Isaiah 61 in the synagogue at Nazareth and stopped before the line about the day of vengeance, declaring that the favorable year of the Lord had come. What does it mean to you personally that we are living in that favorable year right now, before the judgment?
  5. The closing warning in Hebrews 2 asks, how will we escape if we neglect so great a salvation? Pastor Nathan said the takeaway from everything in this passage is to pay closer attention to what we have heard so that we do not drift away. What is one concrete thing that helps you stay close to that message week to week?
