0:02
Speaker 2Good morning, everyone. How is everybody? You're here. You made it through the snow. I'm glad to see you.
0:11
What do you say we stand up? We're worshiping song From Psalm 92, instead of saying it we're going to sing it. It's a song to be sung on the Sabbath. It's good to give praise to God. Amen.
0:26
Wait. Let's sing that again. It is good to praise Alright. Let's sing. It is good.
3:25
Speaker 1Amen. Y'all can have a seat. We have, it's good to be back. It's good to be back. I know the language I'm supposed to start off in and everything is really really nice here.
3:37
It's good to see y'all. I know it is very, very different where we've been for the past two weeks. I'll mention it a few times probably in the sermon today but if y'all didn't know, Carl and Tanya and Pascal and I were all in Africa for the past two weeks, two and a half weeks ago, we left and so we're getting back. Our bodies are here but our brains will be arriving sometime soon, I hope. We're gonna go forward in the word today and the next week probably do a little bit more of a report but I've got some announcements right here.
4:07
Somewhere up here. A little clicker doesn't seem to wanna there's Monday nights at first b.
4:11
Speaker 2We are on tomorrow. So it'll be like a song and scriptural testimony. I wanna end in communion but that's tomorrow and there is let's see, Christian and Lisette are going to be cooking And so know the doors open, 06:00.
4:27
Speaker 1Meal music and an interactive message. Alright. Perfect. We have Awana that's happening at the same time. There's always room for one more.
4:34
That's picture of the stairwell right there. It's one of the places where they do listening for kids reciting memory verses, but there is always room for more. Join us for scripture and games and fun. Starts off right here in this room and then moves throughout the church on the evening, starting about 05:45 going till 07:30. For three year olds through fifth grade, I wanna because kids matter to God.
4:56
We've got an oil change fundraiser. Have you all heard about this? Have you heard about this? Okay. There have been this slide's come up in the past couple of weeks.
5:04
Richard Largie is a mechanic, and Richard and Andre are going to Ghana. And to gain us some money for going to Ghana, they are doing this oil change fundraiser. So if you would like for do that, there's detail there are details in the bulletin and on our website. The baby bottle campaign for Turning Point is happening again. There are baby bottles back there in the on top of the burlap table back there.
5:27
In a washtub, there are baby bottles. If you would grab one of those up, we'd appreciate it if you'd fill it with change or dollar bills or checks, whatever, and send those back to Turning Point. It would help them. It's a big portion of their budget to be able to receive this way. So if you would, baby bottles are back there in the back corner.
5:47
Community Bible Studies prayer group is meeting still on Wednesdays, 09:30 in the morning and 06:30 in the evening. That is going well. I appreciate them this past week. They, I know that several of you are praying for us in that CBS prayer group because they sent us text messages and let us know that. Connect hours happen in between the services.
6:04
If you would like to grab some coffee or some breakfast in between or just connect with some people from this service or from the next. 10:00 connect hour is happening down the hall. And I think I'm a little bit out of the loop as to what's going on around here, but all the announcements typically are in the bulletin. Nick does a good job with making sure that that's happening. So if there's anything else that should be in the paper bulletin, got on your way in.
6:29
And if you didn't get one, grab one on your way out. Yes, sir. Yes. There is. Thank you for reminding me.
6:36
So Bernadette is going. You wanna say something about that?
6:39
Speaker 3Oh, sure. If I haven't met you, my name is Bernadette. Yeah. I'm actually going to YWAM in Townsville, Australia in less than two months, which in case you don't know is Youth With A Mission. I'll be doing like, almost a missionary training school for three months where I'll just be studying the word and just learning about the person of Christ, and it's gonna be so cool.
7:03
And then the next three months will be a missions outreach, most likely in Papua New Guinea. So God has just enabled me with the trust for that. But I am still waiting on some of the funds for that. So I am starting a babysitting fundraiser. So if you have kids or know people who have kids, I am CPR certified and I would love to watch your kids if you're overdue for a date night or just wanna go skiing or something like that.
7:31
But yeah, I have information on all three of the bulletin boards outside, and it has my number. Feel free to call me, text me. Yeah.
7:39
Speaker 1Bernadette Spotts. Thank you very much, Bernadette. And I think that that's it. Would you all stand up and greet one another, and we'll bring you back together with Pepe song. Thank you, Carl.
7:51
I knew I'd forget if it weren't up there.
12:12
Speaker 2Amen. That's a new one. You're probably like, yeah, that's a new one. But are are the lyrics not good in that song? There you Truly?
12:20
You will carry me safe to shore. I grew up near Lake Superior, and so those big lighthouses and lakes Lake Superior can be a very very rough rough lake and just the image of that. The God this being this lighthouse on the shore drawing us into safety. Amen. So in Kenya, we got to kind of rub elbow elbows with some of the the Kenyan some Kenyan worship music.
12:46
And the Kenyans recognized our hymns and knew many of them. And so I said, oh, this is so much fun. Let's what do you say we sing some in English and some in Swahili? And they agreed to to do that. And so I got to learn a chorus of how great thou art in Swahili.
13:03
And I thought, I'm taking this home, and I'm I know I'm gonna butcher it. I know we're gonna butcher it. I'm sorry if anybody's watching from Kenya. What we're doing our best here, but I wanna tell you one of the most beautiful things about being there was to see the different expressions of of worship. Mhmm.
13:22
I tell you what Kenyans can really move my friends. We got some work to do. We got some work to do. But it was beautiful to hear them sing in their own language and and a lot of times I was like, hey listen, could could I just hear you? I get tired of hearing myself and it was so beautiful to hear to hear worship in their in their native tongue.
13:45
So anyway, here's the chorus of of How How Great Thou Art. Ray's gonna help me. He's the language guy. I'm not. I'm a rhythm person.
13:56
Speaker 1I'm not.
13:56
Speaker 2It it goes a little something like. What do you think? Should we try it on for size? I mean, come on. Right?
14:54
Alright. Let's try it out. Oh, Lord. How true. How great you are in every language, in every place, in every tribe, and nation, and tongue.
17:37
I thank you, Lord, that you are a light to the world, drawing us in, not just here, but everywhere. Praise you for that. Praise you for being the big, great, awesome God that you are. Ever present, ever knowing, all powerful, our righteous judge, our savior, our friend, our redeemer. And thank you Lord for giving us access to yourself through your word.
18:03
We get to know you through your word. Who you are? What you do? Thank you that your words they bring life. Second Timothy three, all scripture is God breathed and it's useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, training in righteousness so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.
18:26
Let's sing a bit. Let's sing that again. We'll make it our prayer, our song. Let's hear God's word. Your words give us life Let's sing that chorus again.
21:48
Your words. Amen to that. You may be seated, and I'm gonna ask Ray if you would you would pray for us.
22:21
Speaker 1God almighty, we come before you humbled this morning. Lord, I'm just thankful to be a part of the the family of God, the the worldwide church, the church triumphant, lord, those who have put their trust in you from the beginnings of time, lord, until a time has its end on that great mighty day of the Lord. God, we're humble before you and so we come to this time right now where we want to give back lord so that others may come to know the peace that we have come to know that others may get to hear your good good news. The gospel that Jesus Christ has made the way, that he is the one mediator between God and man, that he has made the way for our sins be forgiven and for us to have access to the marvelous kingdom of light. In Jesus name, lord, we come before you right now asking that you would take the tithes and offerings and the time and the skills and the talents and the other resources that we place in your trust, lord.
23:24
That you'd take those, that you would multiply em, that you would advance your kingdom through them. So, God, would you do what only you can do? Multiply these and lord, through your obedient servants, spread your good news where it is currently not. Your omnipresence and your omniscience. Lord, you know it and you know how to get there.
23:46
We are plan A, lord. There is no plan B. So, God, I pray that we'd have soft and malleable hearts and that you'd use those lord. Press us with the steps that you have already prepared that we should walk in em. In Jesus name, take this offering and do with it as you will so that your kingdom may be on earth as it is in heaven.
24:06
Amen. Amen. So, it's time. Peak Children's Church is starting downstairs right now. That's fun.
29:01
How are y'all? How's everybody this morning? Fantastic. Alright. It has been snowing since we left, hasn't it?
29:08
That's what I've heard. Every time I've heard anything about here, it has been, it's still snowing. It's still snowing. It's been it's been great. Ten hours time difference is one of those weird ones that just as disorienting as it can be.
29:22
So, first night, we got back on Friday back in the Jackson about 04:30 or five in the afternoon after having driven from Salt Lake City. We flew in the night before. Got in at midnight. And so yeah. It's been amazing at about 11:45 or twelve when I wake up to just have all these flashes of what feels like brilliance.
29:44
And then two hours later, have no idea what I was thinking. I couldn't physically move enough to write. I am more and more convinced than I've told y'all this a thousand times. I'm more more convinced about scripture and just sticking with what it says and it was a huge blessing. I I hope next week that we'll talk a little bit about the trip but the scripture has been amazing.
30:07
Movuno Church, we helped out with Movuno Church and with my Isha Mafia Learning Center. I'll get to that at the end of this message but watching God work and just thinking that his praise never ends. When we hear your praise will never end, you know, his praise never ends. We hear that. We think, yeah, praise never ends but we go to sleep.
30:27
You know, his praise really never ends. I know that you know that because you understand how time works, you know, but with the sun coming up on the other side of the Earth, it's just overwhelming for me. Time and space is one of those things that's just overwhelming. How that work? Is my slide is, are my slides in there, Blake?
30:44
Good. Alright, here we go. Second Timothy four one through eight is what we're going to cover today. Preaching the word is what we're going to talk about primarily. It's just eight verses and we're going to walk through them like this.
30:59
I solemnly charge you. Now, I'm standing up here preaching and I'm saying, I solemnly charge you and I could do that and it would be for y'all. In this case, this U is for Timothy. Ho It's still time for the children. If y'all, if there's any child left in it, no, I'm just kidding.
31:18
I'm not going to say anything that's inappropriate for children but I suddenly charge you, the you there is Timothy. It's Paul speaking to Timothy, speaking to him from his Roman imprisonment. He knows that his time is running out. He knows that and so, he is upping his rhetoric a bit here with Timothy. You don't just commonly go up to somebody and say, I solemnly charge you but he does.
31:44
In this case, he says it and it's like legal verbiage even and he says, I solemnly charge you. Step back for just a second. I've already been talking for three chapters. You know, they would have read this all at once but when this paragraph starts and he says, back up and take a breath, Timothy. This is serious business.
32:02
I solemnly charge you. In the presence of God and Jesus Christ, if you're it's not exactly an oath. You know, it's not an oath where he's saying, buy, you know, Zeus' beard or so and so sword or whatever. He's saying, by the presence of God in Christ Jesus in this. I'm solemnly charging.
32:26
This is something that serious business Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead Christ Jesus the instrument of God's salvation. When he reappears, he's coming in judgement, right? Christ Jesus, who's the judge, the living and the dead, living and dead is everybody. Everybody who has ever lived, those who are dead and those who are still alive. I solemnly charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus.
32:53
They're watching us right now. Omnipresent wherever and Jesus is coming back and he'll be coming in judgement to judge the living and the dead and by his appearing and by his kingdom, it's it's do you notice how serious this is? That's what he's saying, Timothy. Take it seriously. Now, I'm going to take that and you remember, have you seen the bumper sticker that says, Jesus is coming?
33:17
Try to look busy. That's the opposite of this, okay? He's saying, Jesus is coming soon. Be about his business and he's about to tell him what it is. Who's the judge living in the dead and by his appearing in his kingdom, Timothy, preach, preach, preach, preach.
33:37
The word there is karuso. Karuso. Karigma is karigma is about proclamation or preaching. Karuso. It is to herald like Hark, the herald angels sing, glory to God in the highest and on earth.
33:52
Peace and goodwill towards men, right? Properly, is to herald to proclaim or announce a message publicly with conviction and persuasion. I love that. Ked Russo is to herald and in the New Testament, it refers to preaching the gospel as the authoritative and binding word of God. There is only one set of good news.
34:14
There are other good news that flows from it but the good news of the gospel is that God has made a way. Jesus took on and the power of the spirit. He took on God's direction and command to come to Earth and to live a perfect life. Tempted in every way just as we're tempted but yet without sin and then to offer that perfect record for who whatsoever would believe. That's the good news of the gospel and to Caruso is to proclaim that.
34:47
Now, in this society, as in our societies, they recognized in that place that there were many gods, you know, a pantheon of gods and they were all kind of screwed up. Quite honestly, they were just amplified human personalities. More a lot like our superheroes now. With flaws and foibles and all kinds of problems but there's one almighty God. All the other gods, they are the works of man.
35:13
This is one of the songs we sang over and over over there. I don't know it. It's gone. Sing it over and over and over again. My brain is going to arrive sometime this week, I hope.
35:32
Preach the word. What are you preaching? What are you proclaiming? It's the word. The word, the word of God.
35:38
Now, he has just said the the previous chapter in our Bibles but also it's just a sentence before he started this one, right? All scriptures inspired by God. It's profitable for teaching and for reproof and for correction and for training and righteousness. This is why we pour so much time and effort into Awana, into pouring scripture into the hearts and minds of kids at Maisha Moppi Learning Center in Nakuru, Kenya. That's why they spend so much time putting scripture in because it's profitable for us for reproof, correcting behavior, for correction, for training, and righteousness.
36:17
Do you want to be right and win the argument or do you want to be righteous? Oh, oh that we would want to be righteous and the scripture has the power to help that process so that we, the man, men and women of God, may be adequate or fully equipped, fully equipped complete, and equipped for every good work. He says to Timothy, preach the word. Don't get far from what it says. He said in Corinthians, to go don't go beyond what it says because they were going beyond what it says.
36:49
They were extrapolating from it and making up some stuff and Paul says, don't go beyond what's written. Preach the word, he says to Timothy. Be ready in season and out of season. Is that hunting season? Tourist season?
37:05
Interesting, the the word right there is kairos. Kairos is a a time in Greek, but there's chronos time, which is just about 01:00, 02:00, 03:00. Right? And then, there is Kairos which is an opportune time at just the right time. Jesus was born.
37:25
At just the right time, God steps in. Christ was born of a virgin. That that passage is Kairos in an opportune moment. So, the word here for in season is you Kairos, meaning good time at a good and opportune time. Preach the word, Timothy.
37:42
Be ready and alert. Show up. Be there. Be present at a good time and then out of season is Akai Ross. When it's not a good time.
37:53
Timothy it comes with the job, buddy. Be ready when it's a good time and be ready when it's not a good time. Preach the word. Have it at the ready at all times. Good times and bad times.
38:05
Be ready. Preach, proclaim, herald the word of God. Don't shy away from what is written. Don't trim the sails towards society. Where Timothy was, people were refuting good, sound doctrine.
38:26
They're beginning to and Paul says, that's going to get worse in just a minute. Preach the word. Be ready in season and out of season. Reprove. Reprove.
38:35
Rebuke. Exhort. So, these are the punchy imperatives all in a row and it is straight up. For those of you who are going to be leading in any capacity really, these are the things to do. Preach the word.
38:53
Proclaim what it says. Be ready good times and bad times. Reprove, rebuke, exhort. I actually took the dictionary definition and I didn't put them down because this is one of those brilliant moments in the middle of the night. And I thought, if you don't know what reprove means, you kinda need to know what reprove means.
39:15
And watch it not show up. Thank you. Express sharp oh, that's rebuke. Sorry. Thank you very much.
39:29
Criticize or correct. Thank you. It is to reprimand or censure someone to criticize or correct and to reprove is what you can do with the word. Don't just do it just because you disagree with them or disagree with their personality or because you have personality conflict but when it comes down to someone who is refuting what scripture says, by the way they live or by the way, that they are speaking primarily in this case. Be ready.
39:57
Good time or bad to reprove, criticize, or correct death. Let me go to the rebuke. Rebuke is to express sharp disagreement with because of their behavior or actions primarily. So, reprove is more reprove when they're saying or teaching something in error, I think. And rebuke is the way that they're acting.
40:26
Exhort. Exhort is to encourage toward the good. It's not just to be naysayers and always on the anti but to exhort is to encourage towards or that would be the section in three sixteen and seventeen. It says, for training in righteousness for bringing people along and then he ends it like this after these punchy boom boom boom preach the word be ready Rebuke, repre exhort Then he says, do that with great patience and instruction Great patience and instruction these are how these should be done. I like the words kind of another good translation with that is with all long suffering and most painstaking teaching activity the didash, the didactic teaching You can rebuke, reprove, and exhort from the Bible but do so patiently and with a teaching for change, teaching to communicate for change and transformation So, I got two old two examples.
41:32
One of them is an old testament, one's a new testament, one Nathan rebukes David. Y'all remember the story? I put the whole story up here but I think y'all probably remember it. David sees a lady bathing. He was on a roof to get to see her bathing, right?
41:44
And then he didn't have any accountability really with anybody and call anybody and say, hey, man. I just help me out here. He didn't do that. Want to find out who she was. Found out who she was.
41:57
He committed adultery with her. Then he found out who her husband was and here we go. Then the Lord sent Nathan to David and he came to him and said, David, there were two men in one city and one was rich, another one was poor, the rich man had great many flocks and herds, but the poor man had nothing except one little ewe lamb. David's king of Israel, right? David's got.
42:22
But which he bought and he nourished and it grew up together with him and his children and it would eat of this bread and drink of his cup and lie his bosom and was like a daughter to him. Now, traveler came to the rich man and he was unwilling to take from his own flock or his own herd to prepare for the wayfarer who come to him. Rather, he took the poor man's eulam and prepared it for the man who'd come to him and then David's anger burned greatly against that man. And he said to Nathan, as the Lord lives, surely, the man who's done this deserves to die. He must make restitution for the lamb fourfold because he did this thing and he had no compassion and Nathan said to David, you are the man.
43:03
You see how he's patient? He didn't just blast him right out of the door but he taught and he thought, how am I going to tell the king this? Took some courage actually to tell the king this but the Lord's word came to Nathan and he sent him to David and so he did with God's blessing say, you are the man and thus says the Lord God of Israel, it is I, who anointed you king over Israel and it's I who delivered you from the hand of Saul, and I also gave you your master's house and your master's wives into your care, and I gave you the house of Israel and Judah, and if that had been too little, I would have added to you many more things like these. Why have you despised the word of the Lord by doing evil in his sight? You struck down Uriah the Hittite with the sword.
43:48
You've taken his wife to be your wife. No. You killed him with the sword and the sons of Ammon, they are therefore. The sword will never depart from your house because you despise me and you've taken the wife of Uriah, the Hittite to be your own. Thus says the Lord God, behold, I'll raise up evil against you.
44:01
He keeps on going. Is this, he's teaching him and he's showing. Praise God. David did repent. Right here, he says, Then David said to Nathan, I've sinned against the Lord rather than saying, I'm the king and do whatever I want to.
44:19
Nope, you're right, Nathan. I've sinned against the Lord and then we have Psalm 51. You want to go to Psalm 51 this afternoon and look at that and go, oh, that's a contrite heart. That's where we want to be. Whenever we recognize that we have sinned, that's where we want to go.
44:32
I have sinned against the Lord and Nathan said to David, the Lord has taken away your sin. You shall not die. He's not going to kill you over this, David. First Corinthians five, first Corinthians, there's a lot of trouble in the Corinthian church. It's actually reported that there's immorality among you and immorality is such a kind that doesn't even exist among the Gentiles.
44:51
Someone has taken his father's wife and you've become arrogant, you've not mourned instead so that the one who had done this deed would be removed from your midst. For I on my part, though absent in the body, I'm not there with you. I'm writing this letter because I can't even believe what's going on. I've judged him. Who's committed who is so committed this and as though our present in the name of our Lord Jesus, when you're assembled and I with you, the power of the Lord Jesus, I have decided to deliver such one to Satan for the destruction of the flesh so that his spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus.
45:26
He said, that's not something that should be happening. You gotta call this kind of stuff out. That's reprove. Does it sound like sharp disagreement? That's rebuke, right?
45:36
He's encouraging them to do something about it and in second Corinthians, he writes another letter and he says this, okay, if any has caused sorrow, he's caused sorrow not to me but in some degree in order not to say too much to all of y'all. Sufficient for such one as this as punishment which was inflicted by the majority. They really took Paul seriously and then they cast this guy out and he's calling him back. I'm getting to the patients and teaching spirit here. So, then on the contrary, you should rather forgive now and comfort him.
46:05
Otherwise, such a one might be overwhelmed by excessive sorrow. Wherefore, I urge you to reaffirm your love for him. For to this end, I also wrote so that I might put you to the test whether you're being obedient in all things but one whom you forgive anything. I forgive also. He was saying, you don't have to do this for me.
46:22
I'm trying to get you to bring a brother back. Do you get what I'm saying? That's the goal of reproving and rebuking and exhorting with great patience and instruction. It's the truth with love. Are you with me?
46:35
That's the one I did learn. Are we together? Church, I'll I'll go into it more next week but I can't tell you the blessing and this morning, when I was wide awake, I watched their Facebook Live. They started doing Facebook Live this week. It's kind of nice.
46:53
So, pastor Josh had Movuno Church had a great message and it turned out it was on Nathan and David and Bathsheba. All scriptures inspired by God. It's profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness so that the man of God may be adequate. I I said last time that I presented this that adequate fully trained or fully complete or absolutely perfect. If you were to put that right there, that to me says, oh my goodness, I'm a let somebody else who has more understanding about this do this but that is concentrating on the now.
47:26
You concentrate on scripture and concentrate on letting it lead you and bend your will to its requirements rather than bending its words to your requirements. Are you with me? You're going to either bend it or it's going to bend you. So that you may be ready and equipped for every good work as they come. Okay.
47:48
For the time will come and this is why Paul says this with such solemnity. The time will come when they won't even endure sound doctrine. They won't even listen to it at all. They're going to stop listening to it completely He had already said this last chapter, realize this in the last days, difficult times are going to come. People are to be lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, revilers, disobedient parents, ungrateful, unholy, unloving, irreconcilable, malicious gossips without self control, brutal, haters are good, treacherous, reckless, conceded, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, and holding to a form of godliness or spirituality.
48:24
They've also denied its power. The time is coming when they won't endure sound doctrine but wanting to have their ears tickled. It really says that. Wanting to have their ears tickled or scratched and itching. There's an itching in their ears and they want to be scratched.
48:43
They want what they want. They want to hear what they want to hear. In our polarized time, have you all noticed that news is tickling ears? One is tickling the left ear and one is tickling the right ear. Wanting to have their ears tickled.
49:03
They will accumulate for themselves. Teachers, experts, teachers in accordance to their own desires. They're going to find people that will tell them what they want to hear. Jeremiah's time, Old Testament example here. An appalling and a horrible thing has happened in the land.
49:22
The prophets prophesy falsely. And the priest rule on their own authority, not the authority of scripture, not the authority that God has given but on their own authority and my people love it. So, let me bring that out and my people love it so. The prosperity gospel is growing by leaps and bounds. Why?
49:47
Because the people love it. So, that is a horrible thing that has happened in the land but what will you do at the end of it? That's Jeremiah five. And so, when it says the time is coming, that time has always been coming and and we see that it happens in cycles sometimes too where there's repentance and restoration They will accumulate for themselves teachers in accordance with their own desires and they will turn away their ears from the truth and they will turn aside to myths I wanted to lay out truth and myths. Do you all know there are a lot of myths Do you know that there are and there are things that people believe I printed out page after page after page after page of stuff but I I think suffice it to say, we have an enduring word of God.
50:39
We sang about it this morning. The grass wither, the flower will fall but the word of our lord will last forever. So, don't go beyond what it says. Don't make up something that is more convenient. Don't proof text and preach six words in a row that are half a verse so that you can get your point across that you want to make.
50:57
Does that make sense? He's saying, just preach the truth. They will turn away their ears from the truth and they will turn aside the myths and then Paul says, but you, but you, you, Timothy, you worry about yourself. You, you, you be sober in all things. Don't get overwhelmed.
51:16
Don't let the circumstances get the best of you and don't numb yourself from the circumstances that are surrounding you. Be sober in all things and endure hardship. Does that sound like prosperity? Gospel? No.
51:32
It's not going to be easy. Endure hardship. Stick with it. Do the work of an evangelist. This is there evangelist, the words only used three times in the New Testament but you like the verb for evangelize is used all over the place but he said, you, Timothy, do the work of an evangelist.
51:49
You do have to correct and you do have to reprove and you do have to encourage. You do have to do the things that you do in this role that I'm asking you but don't ever turn aside from presenting the only way that there is. Don't ever turn aside from presenting the gospel to the lost, okay? The good news is for everyone who will believe and don't ever turn aside from that just to argue about words. Be sober in all things endure hardship.
52:17
Do the work of an evangelist. Fulfill your ministry Basically, says, fill it up Fill it up Fill up your ministry Do it all and how or what does he mean? Well, the clearest context for what it is is do the work of an evangelist Fulfill your ministry. That was one of the giftings that God had given him and Paul's reminded him a couple times already and Timothy to rekindle the fire that is within you that was set ablaze Rekindle this fire that's among that's in you We laid hands on you to do a work and it was most people believe, the work of an evangelist. So, he's saying, fulfill that ministry.
52:53
He's also saying, endure hardship. It's part of ministry and be sober. That's a part of this too. Don't get intoxicated Spirit metaphorically speaking or physically speaking and then Paul says this boy, it's been a while since I've been up here in Africa. They let me go whenever long I wanted to.
53:15
Very quickly, there are three tenses here. Paul talks about past, present, and future tenses and he says, for I, this is, but you, Timothy, do this because I, here I am, I'm your teacher, I'm your spiritual dad. I, I'm already being poured out like a drink offering. I'm already being poured out. I can tell my life is ebbing away and I'm sitting under the possibility of harsh judgment for doing what I have done.
53:42
I'm already being poured out as a drink offering in the time of my departure has come. My ship is about to sail. I have fought the good fight. Oh, the Greek word order and this is actually, I think, kind of powerful too. He says, the good fight, I fought.
53:57
Isn't that better? The grand fight, I fought it. It reduces the amount of ego that you hear in that. I fought the good fight. That sounds but the good fight.
54:11
I fought. The race course, I finished it. The faith, I've kept it. Praise God. I've kept it.
54:22
I've held on to it. He has preached for so long that those who persevere to the end will be saved. And he's saying I've kept the faith. I'm in the future. So that is the that is the I am being poured out as the present and then the I have finished the course.
54:41
I have kept the faith. I have fought the good fight. That's the past and then he says, in the future, there is laid up for me a crown, a crown of righteousness, a wreath of righteousness. If you long for righteousness, you will be filled Jesus will. The Lord, the righteous judge, he will award that to me on that day and again, in a diminishment of ego and self, he says, not only me but also all of those who have loved his appearing.
55:09
The church triumphant. Everyone who's ever put their trust in Christ will receive this. They'll know what it's like to be filled with righteousness. That's the end of what I want to cover today. We're going forward next week with the personal greetings but I thought that personal greetings made more sense for me to talk about personal stuff from what happened over in Africa this week.
55:32
We do have communion right now and so if you are a part of the church triumph and I do not care about your deno affiliation. I do not care about your church membership. I'm going to give you the same charge that Jesus gave as far as whoever has put your trust in Jesus may take this table. It's completely wide open and so if you put your faith in Christ, you're welcome to do this. Can I get the elders to come forward and we'll do a distribution and Florine, would you play something pretty?
56:02
Thank you. Would y'all pray with me as they're coming forward? God, I thank you for I thank you for your word. I thank you that we have something to proclaim that we're not just blown about by every wind of society or new thinking or doctrine of our contemporaries. Lord, I thank you that we have something that is unchanging and can be proclaimed.
56:30
I thank you that in the beginning was the word. The word was with God. The expression of God towards us, Jesus Christ came, lived the perfect life, and made a perfect sacrificial death for all who would believe. Lord, I pray that you would bless each one who has made that step, that profession of faith, Lord. And I pray that you'd bless us to know that it is not us, but it's you that makes this possible.
57:02
This new life in you. In Jesus name, lord, I ask you to bless this cup as we distribute it or this bread as we distribute it. In Jesus name, we thank you for your broken body that was surrendered and given up voluntarily for us, for our sins to be forgiven. Jesus name, amen. On the same night that Jesus was betrayed, he took bread after supper and after he given thanks, he broke it and he said to his disciples that were there assembled with him and I'm saying it to you here today.
1:00:28
That this is the body of Christ. He said, this is my body which is given for you. Take this and eat and do it as often as you will in remembrance of me. I thank you lord that we don't serve a high priest that doesn't know what it's like to live. Here, I thank you for your perfect life well lived but I thank you lord for your redemptive blood that was spilled and so we remember that too.
1:01:08
Right now, lord, I pray that you bless this little cup of juice as we distribute it that each person that is trusted in your redeeming blood lord would take this and it would center us and it would help us to remember you. But God for each one who must let this pass because they just are unconvinced and not persuaded, lord, that that is true or good. For everyone of those, lord, I pray that you'd give em the grace of a soft and malleable heart and the lives of the people that are sitting in this room around them. Might sway them and change their mind and bring them into a right relationship with you lord. Would you do your work?
1:01:51
Amen. In the same way that he had taken the bread, he took the cup after supper and he said to them that this is the new covenant in my blood. I just have been thinking here just a minute ago that Paul's solemn charge. This was a solemn charge to his disciples. This is the new covenant in my blood.
1:05:34
Take this and drink and do it as often as you will in remembrance of me.
1:05:44
Speaker 2I
1:05:49
Speaker 1think Carl, I'm just going to do the doxology. How about that? Okay. And next week, Blake, if you want to go back to the very last slides that I didn't use, the last few. So, four of us were ministering in Nakuru, Kenya last week.
1:06:05
If you want to know more about that, we're at the Maisha Moppi Learning Center and I'll talk about it next week. We did some of these things. Hilton's Heroes, the organization we went through and it was fun. It was good but there was it was a varied experience and I'm hoping that in this week, I can compress that down to where it'll be punchy and good. It won't be a missionary slideshow, okay?
1:06:28
That's the worst part of church you ever remember growing up then, I'm telling you, worship experience, we did this there too alongside this church and I just want to say, I think it's going to be something at personal greetings for the end of Paul. I think this is going be something that's enjoyable and to everybody at Movuno Church, nice to see y'all. Would you stand with me and sing Doxology? Praise God from whom all blessings flow. Praise him all creatures here below.
1:07:02
Praise him above ye heavenly host. Praise father, son, and holy ghost Amen. And now, we pray. Restore to me the joy of your salvation. Did you see that it's the joy of your salvation?
1:07:28
It's God's salvation that he hands out and he can restore to you the joy of his salvation and grant me a willing spirit to sustain me from Psalm 51. In Jesus name, I pray that he'd do that. Amen.
