Preach the Word
A study guide · February 24, 2019 · 2 Timothy
In one paragraph
This message came from 2 Timothy 4:1-8, with Pastor Josh preaching his first Sunday back after two and a half weeks in Nakuru, Kenya. He walked through Paul's final charge to Timothy, centering on what it means to preach the word faithfully when the world around you would rather hear something easier. The sermon moved from the weight of that charge to what it looks like in practice, and closed...
Read together
- Psalm 92 sung at the opening of the service as a worship song for the Sabbath
- 2 Timothy 3:16-17 all Scripture is God-breathed and profitable for teaching, rebuking, correcting, training in righteousness, so the servant of God may be fully equipped
- 2 Timothy 4:1-8 the primary passage preached, covering the solemn charge to preach the word, the coming time of itching ears, and Paul's crown of righteousness
- 1 Corinthians 4 referenced as Paul telling the Corinthians not to go beyond what is written
- 2 Samuel 12:1-13 Nathan rebukes David with the parable of the ewe lamb as an example of patient reproving and teaching
- Psalm 51 cited as David's contrite response after Nathan's rebuke, and quoted at the close in the benediction prayer
- 1 Corinthians 5:1-5 Paul rebukes the Corinthian church for tolerating immorality and calls for the offender to be removed
- 2 Corinthians 2:5-8 Paul urges the Corinthians to forgive and restore the man who was cast out, as an example of patience and teaching after rebuke
- Jeremiah 5:30-31 prophets prophesying falsely and priests ruling on their own authority, with the people loving it, used as an Old Testament parallel to itching ears
- Isaiah 40:8 the grass withers and the flower falls but the word of the Lord lasts forever, referenced during the warning against turning to myths
Talk about it
- Paul tells Timothy to preach the word 'in season and out of season,' meaning in good times and bad times. When have you found it hardest to stay ready to share or live out what Scripture says, and what made that season difficult?
- Pastor Mark described 'karuso' as heralding the gospel as the authoritative and binding word of God. In your own life, what is the difference between sharing an opinion and actually heralding something? What does it take to move from one to the other?
- Nathan rebuked David not with a direct accusation but through a story, approaching him with patience and a teaching spirit. Can you think of a time when someone corrected you in a way that actually changed you, and what made their approach effective?
- Paul warns that people will accumulate teachers who tell them what they want to hear, turning away from truth toward myths. Where do you see that pressure in your own life to seek out voices that confirm what you already believe rather than voices that challenge you?
- Paul closes by saying the crown of righteousness is laid up not only for him but for all who have loved Christ's appearing. How does keeping the return of Jesus in view actually change the way you do ordinary things day to day?
