Surely Not I, Lord

March 10, 2024 · Harmony of the Gospels

Scripture referenced 18 passages

The passage this message was preached from, in full, with every other passage it reached for.

  • Isaiah 25 opening verse used to call the congregation to worship, 'Lord, you're my God and I will exalt you'

1 Yahweh, you are my God. I will exalt you! I will praise your name, for you have done wonderful things, things planned long ago, in complete faithfulness and truth.

2 For you have made a city into a heap, a fortified city into a ruin, a palace of strangers to be no city. It will never be built.

3 Therefore a strong people will glorify you. A city of awesome nations will fear you.

4 For you have been a stronghold to the poor, a stronghold to the needy in his distress, a refuge from the storm, a shade from the heat, when the blast of the dreaded ones is like a storm against the wall.

5 As the heat in a dry place will you bring down the noise of strangers; as the heat by the shade of a cloud, the song of the dreaded ones will be brought low.

6 In this mountain, Yahweh of Armies will make all peoples a feast of choice meat, a feast of choice wines, of choice meat full of marrow, of well refined choice wines.

7 He will destroy in this mountain the surface of the covering that covers all peoples, and the veil that is spread over all nations.

8 He has swallowed up death forever! The Lord Yahweh will wipe away tears from off all faces. He will take the reproach of his people away from off all the earth, for Yahweh has spoken it.

9 It shall be said in that day, “Behold, this is our God! We have waited for him, and he will save us! This is Yahweh! We have waited for him. We will be glad and rejoice in his salvation!”

10 For in this mountain Yahweh’s hand will rest. Moab will be trodden down in his place, even like straw is trodden down in the water of the dunghill.

11 He will spread out his hands in the middle of it, like one who swims spreads out hands to swim, but his pride will be humbled together with the craft of his hands.

12 He has brought the high fortress of your walls down, laid low, and brought to the ground, even to the dust.

Matthew 26:1-5

Jesus tells disciples Passover is coming and he will be handed over; chief priests and elders plot to arrest and kill him

1 When Jesus had finished all these words, he said to his disciples,

2 “You know that after two days the Passover is coming, and the Son of Man will be delivered up to be crucified.”

3 Then the chief priests, the scribes, and the elders of the people were gathered together in the court of the high priest, who was called Caiaphas.

4 They took counsel together that they might take Jesus by deceit, and kill him.

5 But they said, “Not during the feast, lest a riot occur among the people.”

parallel account of chief priests and scribes seeking to arrest Jesus covertly, not during the festival

1 It was now two days before the feast of the Passover and the unleavened bread, and the chief priests and the scribes sought how they might seize him by deception, and kill him.

2 For they said, “Not during the feast, because there might be a riot among the people.”

3 While he was at Bethany, in the house of Simon the leper, as he sat at the table, a woman came having an alabaster jar of ointment of pure nard—very costly. She broke the jar, and poured it over his head.

4 But there were some who were indignant among themselves, saying, “Why has this ointment been wasted?

5 For this might have been sold for more than three hundred denarii, and given to the poor.” They grumbled against her.

6 But Jesus said, “Leave her alone. Why do you trouble her? She has done a good work for me.

7 For you always have the poor with you, and whenever you want to, you can do them good; but you will not always have me.

8 She has done what she could. She has anointed my body beforehand for the burying.

9 Most certainly I tell you, wherever this Good News may be preached throughout the whole world, that which this woman has done will also be spoken of for a memorial of her.”

10 Judas Iscariot, who was one of the twelve, went away to the chief priests, that he might deliver him to them.

11 They, when they heard it, were glad, and promised to give him money. He sought how he might conveniently deliver him.

12 On the first day of unleavened bread, when they sacrificed the Passover, his disciples asked him, “Where do you want us to go and prepare that you may eat the Passover?”

13 He sent two of his disciples, and said to them, “Go into the city, and there you will meet a man carrying a pitcher of water. Follow him,

14 and wherever he enters in, tell the master of the house, ‘The Teacher says, “Where is the guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?”’

15 He will himself show you a large upper room furnished and ready. Get ready for us there.”

16 His disciples went out, and came into the city, and found things as he had said to them, and they prepared the Passover.

17 When it was evening he came with the twelve.

18 As they sat and were eating, Jesus said, “Most certainly I tell you, one of you will betray me—he who eats with me.”

19 They began to be sorrowful, and to ask him one by one, “Surely not I?” And another said, “Surely not I?”

20 He answered them, “It is one of the twelve, he who dips with me in the dish.

21 For the Son of Man goes, even as it is written about him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would be better for that man if he had not been born.”

22 As they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had blessed, he broke it, and gave to them, and said, “Take, eat. This is my body.”

23 He took the cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave to them. They all drank of it.

24 He said to them, “This is my blood of the new covenant, which is poured out for many.

25 Most certainly I tell you, I will no more drink of the fruit of the vine, until that day when I drink it anew in God’s Kingdom.”

26 When they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.

27 Jesus said to them, “All of you will be made to stumble because of me tonight, for it is written, ‘I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered.’

28 However, after I am raised up, I will go before you into Galilee.”

29 But Peter said to him, “Although all will be offended, yet I will not.”

30 Jesus said to him, “Most certainly I tell you, that you today, even this night, before the rooster crows twice, you will deny me three times.”

31 But he spoke all the more, “If I must die with you, I will not deny you.” They all said the same thing.

32 They came to a place which was named Gethsemane. He said to his disciples, “Sit here, while I pray.”

33 He took with him Peter, James, and John, and began to be greatly troubled and distressed.

34 He said to them, “My soul is exceedingly sorrowful, even to death. Stay here, and watch.”

35 He went forward a little, and fell on the ground, and prayed that, if it were possible, the hour might pass away from him.

36 He said, “Abba, Father, all things are possible to you. Please remove this cup from me. However, not what I desire, but what you desire.”

37 He came and found them sleeping, and said to Peter, “Simon, are you sleeping? Couldn’t you watch one hour?

38 Watch and pray, that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”

39 Again he went away, and prayed, saying the same words.

40 Again he returned, and found them sleeping, for their eyes were very heavy, and they didn’t know what to answer him.

41 He came the third time, and said to them, “Sleep on now, and take your rest. It is enough. The hour has come. Behold, the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.

42 Arise, let us be going. Behold, he who betrays me is at hand.”

43 Immediately, while he was still speaking, Judas, one of the twelve, came—and with him a multitude with swords and clubs, from the chief priests, the scribes, and the elders.

44 Now he who betrayed him had given them a sign, saying, “Whomever I will kiss, that is he. Seize him, and lead him away safely.”

45 When he had come, immediately he came to him, and said, “Rabbi! Rabbi!” and kissed him.

46 They laid their hands on him, and seized him.

47 But a certain one of those who stood by drew his sword, and struck the servant of the high priest, and cut off his ear.

48 Jesus answered them, “Have you come out, as against a robber, with swords and clubs to seize me?

49 I was daily with you in the temple teaching, and you didn’t arrest me. But this is so that the Scriptures might be fulfilled.”

50 They all left him, and fled.

51 A certain young man followed him, having a linen cloth thrown around himself over his naked body. The young men grabbed him,

52 but he left the linen cloth, and fled from them naked.

53 They led Jesus away to the high priest. All the chief priests, the elders,…

Luke 21

Jesus teaching in the temple by day, spending nights on the Mount of Olives; chief priests seeking to put him to death

1 He looked up, and saw the rich people who were putting their gifts into the treasury.

2 He saw a certain poor widow casting in two small brass coins.

3 He said, “Truly I tell you, this poor widow put in more than all of them,

4 for all these put in gifts for God from their abundance, but she, out of her poverty, put in all that she had to live on.”

5 As some were talking about the temple and how it was decorated with beautiful stones and gifts, he said,

6 “As for these things which you see, the days will come, in which there will not be left here one stone on another that will not be thrown down.”

7 They asked him, “Teacher, so when will these things be? What is the sign that these things are about to happen?”

8 He said, “Watch out that you don’t get led astray, for many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am he,’ and, ‘The time is at hand.’ Therefore don’t follow them.

9 When you hear of wars and disturbances, don’t be terrified, for these things must happen first, but the end won’t come immediately.”

10 Then he said to them, “Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom.

11 There will be great earthquakes, famines, and plagues in various places. There will be terrors and great signs from heaven.

12 But before all these things, they will lay their hands on you and will persecute you, delivering you up to synagogues and prisons, bringing you before kings and governors for my name’s sake.

13 It will turn out as a testimony for you.

14 Settle it therefore in your hearts not to meditate beforehand how to answer,

15 for I will give you a mouth and wisdom which all your adversaries will not be able to withstand or to contradict.

16 You will be handed over even by parents, brothers, relatives, and friends. They will cause some of you to be put to death.

17 You will be hated by all men for my name’s sake.

18 And not a hair of your head will perish.

19 “By your endurance you will win your lives.

20 “But when you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then know that its desolation is at hand.

21 Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. Let those who are in the middle of her depart. Let those who are in the country not enter therein.

22 For these are days of vengeance, that all things which are written may be fulfilled.

23 Woe to those who are pregnant and to those who nurse infants in those days! For there will be great distress in the land, and wrath to this people.

24 They will fall by the edge of the sword, and will be led captive into all the nations. Jerusalem will be trampled down by the Gentiles, until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.

25 There will be signs in the sun, moon, and stars; and on the earth anxiety of nations, in perplexity for the roaring of the sea and the waves;

26 men fainting for fear, and for expectation of the things which are coming on the world: for the powers of the heavens will be shaken.

27 Then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory.

28 But when these things begin to happen, look up, and lift up your heads, because your redemption is near.”

29 He told them a parable. “See the fig tree, and all the trees.

30 When they are already budding, you see it and know by your own selves that the summer is already near.

31 Even so you also, when you see these things happening, know that God’s Kingdom is near.

32 Most certainly I tell you, this generation will not pass away until all things are accomplished.

33 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will by no means pass away.

34 “So be careful, or your hearts will be loaded down with carousing, drunkenness, and cares of this life, and that day will come on you suddenly.

35 For it will come like a snare on all those who dwell on the surface of all the earth.

36 Therefore be watchful all the time, praying that you may be counted worthy to escape all these things that will happen, and to stand before the Son of Man.”

37 Every day Jesus was teaching in the temple, and every night he would go out and spend the night on the mountain that is called Olivet.

38 All the people came early in the morning to him in the temple to hear him.

Judas goes to chief priests asking what they will give him to betray Jesus; thirty pieces of silver

6 Now when Jesus was in Bethany, in the house of Simon the leper,

7 a woman came to him having an alabaster jar of very expensive ointment, and she poured it on his head as he sat at the table.

8 But when his disciples saw this, they were indignant, saying, “Why this waste?

9 For this ointment might have been sold for much, and given to the poor.”

10 However, knowing this, Jesus said to them, “Why do you trouble the woman? She has done a good work for me.

11 For you always have the poor with you; but you don’t always have me.

12 For in pouring this ointment on my body, she did it to prepare me for burial.

13 Most certainly I tell you, wherever this Good News is preached in the whole world, what this woman has done will also be spoken of as a memorial of her.”

14 Then one of the twelve, who was called Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests,

15 and said, “What are you willing to give me, that I should deliver him to you?” They weighed out for him thirty pieces of silver.

16 From that time he sought opportunity to betray him.

17 Now on the first day of unleavened bread, the disciples came to Jesus, saying to him, “Where do you want us to prepare for you to eat the Passover?”

18 He said, “Go into the city to a certain person, and tell him, ‘The Teacher says, “My time is at hand. I will keep the Passover at your house with my disciples.”’”

19 The disciples did as Jesus commanded them, and they prepared the Passover.

20 Now when evening had come, he was reclining at the table with the twelve disciples.

21 As they were eating, he said, “Most certainly I tell you that one of you will betray me.”

22 They were exceedingly sorrowful, and each began to ask him, “It isn’t me, is it, Lord?”

23 He answered, “He who dipped his hand with me in the dish, the same will betray me.

24 The Son of Man goes, even as it is written of him, but woe to that man through whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would be better for that man if he had not been born.”

25 Judas, who betrayed him, answered, “It isn’t me, is it, Rabbi?” He said to him, “You said it.”

26 As they were eating, Jesus took bread, gave thanks for it, and broke it. He gave to the disciples, and said, “Take, eat; this is my body.”

27 He took the cup, gave thanks, and gave to them, saying, “All of you drink it,

28 for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is poured out for many for the remission of sins.

29 But I tell you that I will not drink of this fruit of the vine from now on, until that day when I drink it anew with you in my Father’s Kingdom.”

30 When they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.

31 Then Jesus said to them, “All of you will be made to stumble because of me tonight, for it is written, ‘I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.’

32 But after I am raised up, I will go before you into Galilee.”

33 But Peter answered him, “Even if all will be made to stumble because of you, I will never be made to stumble.”

34 Jesus said to him, “Most certainly I tell you that tonight, before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times.”

35 Peter said to him, “Even if I must die with you, I will not deny you.” All of the disciples also said likewise.

36 Then Jesus came with them to a place called Gethsemane, and said to his disciples, “Sit here, while I go there and pray.”

37 He took with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and began to be sorrowful and severely troubled.

38 Then he said to them, “My soul is exceedingly sorrowful, even to death. Stay here, and watch with me.”

39 He went forward a little, fell on his face, and prayed, saying, “My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass away from me; nevertheless, not what I desire, but what you desire.”

40 He came to the disciples, and found them sleeping, and said to Peter, “What, couldn’t you watch with me for one hour?

41 Watch and pray, that you don’t enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”

42 Again, a second time he went away, and prayed, saying, “My Father, if this cup can’t pass away from me unless I drink it, your desire be done.”

43 He came again and found them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy.

44 He left them again, went away, and prayed a third time, saying the same words.

45 Then he came to his disciples, and said to them, “Sleep on now, and take your rest. Behold, the hour is at hand, and the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.

46 Arise, let’s be going. Behold, he who betrays me is at hand.”

47 While he was still speaking, behold, Judas, one of the twelve, came, and with him a great multitude with swords and clubs, from the chief priests and elders of the people.

48 Now he who betrayed him gave them a sign, saying, “Whoever I kiss, he is the one. Seize him.”

49 Immediately he came to Jesus, and said, “Hail, Rabbi!” and kissed him.

50 Jesus said to him, “Friend, why are you here?” Then they came and laid hands on Jesus, and took him.

51 Behold, one of those who were with Jesus stretched out his hand, and drew his sword, and struck the servant of the high priest, and struck off his ear.

52 Then Jesus said to him, “Put your sword back into its place, for all those who take the sword will die by the sword.

53 Or do you think that I couldn’t ask my Father, and he would even now send me more than twelve legions of angels?

54 How then would the Scriptures be fulfilled that it must be so?”

55 In that hour Jesus said to the multitudes, “Have you come out as against a robber with swords and clubs to…

Luke 22

Satan enters Judas; he discusses with chief priests how to betray Jesus away from the crowd

1 Now the feast of unleavened bread, which is called the Passover, was approaching.

2 The chief priests and the scribes sought how they might put him to death, for they feared the people.

3 Satan entered into Judas, who was also called Iscariot, who was counted with the twelve.

4 He went away, and talked with the chief priests and captains about how he might deliver him to them.

5 They were glad, and agreed to give him money.

6 He consented, and sought an opportunity to deliver him to them in the absence of the multitude.

7 The day of unleavened bread came, on which the Passover must be sacrificed.

8 Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, “Go and prepare the Passover for us, that we may eat.”

9 They said to him, “Where do you want us to prepare?”

10 He said to them, “Behold, when you have entered into the city, a man carrying a pitcher of water will meet you. Follow him into the house which he enters.

11 Tell the master of the house, ‘The Teacher says to you, “Where is the guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?”’

12 He will show you a large, furnished upper room. Make preparations there.”

13 They went, found things as Jesus had told them, and they prepared the Passover.

14 When the hour had come, he sat down with the twelve apostles.

15 He said to them, “I have earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer,

16 for I tell you, I will no longer by any means eat of it until it is fulfilled in God’s Kingdom.”

17 He received a cup, and when he had given thanks, he said, “Take this, and share it among yourselves,

18 for I tell you, I will not drink at all again from the fruit of the vine, until God’s Kingdom comes.”

19 He took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke, and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body which is given for you. Do this in memory of me.”

20 Likewise, he took the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you.

21 But behold, the hand of him who betrays me is with me on the table.

22 The Son of Man indeed goes, as it has been determined, but woe to that man through whom he is betrayed!”

23 They began to question among themselves, which of them it was who would do this thing.

24 There arose also a contention among them, which of them was considered to be greatest.

25 He said to them, “The kings of the nations lord it over them, and those who have authority over them are called ‘benefactors.’

26 But not so with you. But one who is the greater among you, let him become as the younger, and one who is governing, as one who serves.

27 For who is greater, one who sits at the table, or one who serves? Isn’t it he who sits at the table? But I am among you as one who serves.

28 But you are those who have continued with me in my trials.

29 I confer on you a kingdom, even as my Father conferred on me,

30 that you may eat and drink at my table in my Kingdom. You will sit on thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.”

31 The Lord said, “Simon, Simon, behold, Satan asked to have all of you, that he might sift you as wheat,

32 but I prayed for you, that your faith wouldn’t fail. You, when once you have turned again, establish your brothers.”

33 He said to him, “Lord, I am ready to go with you both to prison and to death!”

34 He said, “I tell you, Peter, the rooster will by no means crow today until you deny that you know me three times.”

35 He said to them, “When I sent you out without purse, and wallet, and shoes, did you lack anything?” They said, “Nothing.”

36 Then he said to them, “But now, whoever has a purse, let him take it, and likewise a wallet. Whoever has none, let him sell his cloak, and buy a sword.

37 For I tell you that this which is written must still be fulfilled in me: ‘He was counted with transgressors.’ For that which concerns me has an end.”

38 They said, “Lord, behold, here are two swords.” He said to them, “That is enough.”

39 He came out, and went, as his custom was, to the Mount of Olives. His disciples also followed him.

40 When he was at the place, he said to them, “Pray that you don’t enter into temptation.”

41 He was withdrawn from them about a stone’s throw, and he knelt down and prayed,

42 saying, “Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me. Nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done.”

43 An angel from heaven appeared to him, strengthening him.

44 Being in agony he prayed more earnestly. His sweat became like great drops of blood falling down on the ground.

45 When he rose up from his prayer, he came to the disciples, and found them sleeping because of grief,

46 and said to them, “Why do you sleep? Rise and pray that you may not enter into temptation.”

47 While he was still speaking, behold, a multitude, and he who was called Judas, one of the twelve, was leading them. He came near to Jesus to kiss him.

48 But Jesus said to him, “Judas, do you betray the Son of Man with a kiss?”

49 When those who were around him saw what was about to happen, they said to him, “Lord, shall we strike with the sword?”

50 A certain one of them struck the servant of the high priest, and cut off his right ear.

51 But Jesus answered, “Let me at least do this”—and he touched his ear, and healed him.

52 Jesus said to the chief priests, captains of the temple, and elders, who had come against him, “Have you come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs?

53 When I was with you in the temple daily, you didn’t stretch out your hands against me. But this is your hour, and the power of darkness.”

54 They seized him, and led him away, and brought him into the high priest’s house. But Peter followed from a distance.

55 When they had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard, and had sat down together, Peter sat among them.

56 A certain servant girl saw him as he sat in the light, and looking intently at him, said, “This man also was with him.”

disciples ask where to prepare the Passover; Jesus directs them to a certain man in the city

Mark 14

Jesus sends two disciples to follow a man carrying a pitcher of water to find the upper room

Luke 22

Jesus sends Peter and John to prepare the Passover; they find everything as he told them; Jesus says he has eagerly desired to eat this Passover before he suffers

40 When he was at the place, he said to them, “Pray that you don’t enter into temptation.”

before the Passover feast, Jesus knowing his hour had come, loved his own to the very end; devil had put betrayal in Judas's heart

1 Now before the feast of the Passover, Jesus, knowing that his time had come that he would depart from this world to the Father, having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end.

2 During supper, the devil having already put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, to betray him,

3 Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he came from God, and was going to God,

4 arose from supper, and laid aside his outer garments. He took a towel, and wrapped a towel around his waist.

John 13:5-20

Jesus washes the disciples' feet

5 Then he poured water into the basin, and began to wash the disciples’ feet, and to wipe them with the towel that was wrapped around him.

6 Then he came to Simon Peter. He said to him, “Lord, do you wash my feet?”

7 Jesus answered him, “You don’t know what I am doing now, but you will understand later.”

8 Peter said to him, “You will never wash my feet!” Jesus answered him, “If I don’t wash you, you have no part with me.”

9 Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head!”

10 Jesus said to him, “Someone who has bathed only needs to have his feet washed, but is completely clean. You are clean, but not all of you.”

11 For he knew him who would betray him, therefore he said, “You are not all clean.”

12 So when he had washed their feet, put his outer garment back on, and sat down again, he said to them, “Do you know what I have done to you?

13 You call me, ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord.’ You say so correctly, for so I am.

14 If I then, the Lord and the Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet.

15 For I have given you an example, that you also should do as I have done to you.

16 Most certainly I tell you, a servant is not greater than his lord, neither one who is sent greater than he who sent him.

17 If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them.

18 I don’t speak concerning all of you. I know whom I have chosen. But that the Scripture may be fulfilled, ‘He who eats bread with me has lifted up his heel against me.’

19 From now on, I tell you before it happens, that when it happens, you may believe that I am he.

20 Most certainly I tell you, he who receives whomever I send, receives me; and he who receives me, receives him who sent me.”

at the last supper Jesus says one of them will betray him; disciples each say 'surely it is not I, Lord'

parallel account of Jesus announcing the betrayal at supper; one who dips bread with him in the bowl

Jesus says the hand of the one betraying him is with his on the table; disciples debate which of them it would be

57 He denied Jesus, saying, “Woman, I don’t know him.”

Jesus troubled in spirit, identifies the betrayer by handing a piece of bread to Judas; Satan enters Judas; Judas leaves into the night

21 When Jesus had said this, he was troubled in spirit, and testified, “Most certainly I tell you that one of you will betray me.”

22 The disciples looked at one another, perplexed about whom he spoke.

23 One of his disciples, whom Jesus loved, was at the table, leaning against Jesus’ breast.

24 Simon Peter therefore beckoned to him, and said to him, “Tell us who it is of whom he speaks.”

25 He, leaning back, as he was, on Jesus’ breast, asked him, “Lord, who is it?”

26 Jesus therefore answered, “It is he to whom I will give this piece of bread when I have dipped it.” So when he had dipped the piece of bread, he gave it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot.

27 After the piece of bread, then Satan entered into him. Then Jesus said to him, “What you do, do quickly.”

28 Now no man at the table knew why he said this to him.

29 For some thought, because Judas had the money box, that Jesus said to him, “Buy what things we need for the feast,” or that he should give something to the poor.

30 Therefore having received that morsel, he went out immediately. It was night.

31 When he had gone out, Jesus said, “Now the Son of Man has been glorified, and God has been glorified in him.

32 If God has been glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself, and he will glorify him immediately.

33 Little children, I will be with you a little while longer. You will seek me, and as I said to the Jews, ‘Where I am going, you can’t come,’ so now I tell you.

34 A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also love one another.

35 By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

36 Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, where are you going?” Jesus answered, “Where I am going, you can’t follow now, but you will follow afterwards.”

37 Peter said to him, “Lord, why can’t I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you.”

38 Jesus answered him, “Will you lay down your life for me? Most certainly I tell you, the rooster won’t crow until you have denied me three times.

14:12 Most certainly I tell you, he who believes in me, the works that I do, he will do also; and he will do greater works than these, because I am going to my Father.

14:13 Whatever you will ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.

14:14 If you will ask anything in my name, I will do it.

Recap

The message in order, in a few minutes of reading.

Pastor Ryan walked the congregation through Holy Week from Tuesday night into Thursday, tracing the conspiracy against Jesus, the betrayal by Judas, and the Last Supper across Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. The focus kept returning to one question: what has each person purposed in their heart? The sermon closed with a reading assignment from John 13 through 17 to carry the congregation into Good Friday the following week.

What was said

The chief priests and scribes had already made up their minds. They wanted Jesus removed quietly, without a riot, because a riot would cost them the measure of power Rome had allowed them. Their plotting was not impulsive; it was calculated, driven entirely by self-preservation.

Judas came to them. Pastor Ryan noted that the best construction you can put on Judas is that he genuinely wanted Jesus to establish an earthly kingdom and thought he could force the situation. He may have believed he knew better than Jesus when and how the kingdom should come. But whatever his reasoning, he had purposed in his heart what he would do, and then he sat at the table and said, "Surely it's not I, Rabbi," while knowing it was him.

The other disciples said the same words, "Surely not I, Lord," and those words meant something completely different coming from them. Pastor Ryan pointed out that it is actually a humble response, the response of someone who does not want to be the one who fails his Lord, who hopes it is not him, who asks to be shown his missteps. That is the posture the sermon kept returning to.

John fills in what the other three gospels leave more vague. Before the supper, Jesus washed the disciples' feet. Pastor Ryan made the point simply: if you knew you had one day left, Jesus washed feet. He served. Then at the table, he identified Judas by handing him the piece of bread, and told him to go and do what he was going to do. Judas left, and it was night.

After Judas was gone, the disciples fell into an argument about which of them was the greatest. Jesus answered by pointing back to what he had just done: the one who leads must be like the servant, because he himself was among them as the one who serves. The kings of the Gentiles lord over people and call it benevolence, he told them. It is not to be that way among you.

Pastor Ryan brought it to the present by asking what each person has purposed in their heart. The chief priests, the scribes, and Judas all purposed in their hearts to look out for themselves and their own understanding of how things should go. The disciples who said "surely not I, Lord" had purposed in theirs to follow, even when it was hard, and to ask to be corrected when they drifted. The sermon held both possibilities in front of the room and asked which one each person was living out.

Doing a Bible study?

Here is a guide we have prepared for you: the passages in order, questions for the group, and room to write.

  1. Glenn shared that a moment between high school and college, away from everyone who knew him, became a turning point where he decided who he was going to be in Christ. Can you think of a moment in your own life when you had to decide whether your faith was really your own?
  2. Pastor Ryan pointed out that when Jesus said one of you will betray me, the disciples responded with 'surely not I, Lord,' and he called that a humble response. What does it tell us about where the disciples were in their walk with Jesus that their first instinct was to worry it might be themselves?

Asking Ryan. Good morning, everybody. How are we doing? We look a little sleepy. There's a verse, I think, something about Waco sleeper, but I won't use that one this morning.
Would you stand with me? And here here is a verse to encourage us to worship together in song. It's Isaiah 25 and it says, Lord, you're my God and I will exalt you. I'm gonna lift you up. I'm gonna sing to you.
I'm gonna give thanks to your name for you have worked wonders. You've worked wonders, plans formed long ago with perfect faithfulness. Would you join us in singing evidence? I've seen the evidence of your goodness all over my life.
Alright. All throughout my history. All throughout my history. Your faithfulness has walked beside me. The winter storms made way for spring.
Amen
Amen. Y'all can have an announce y'all can have an announcement. Just one. Just one. What is it, Carl?
There we go.
Awana is on tomorrow at 05:45, and Naomi is gonna be there early to cook for volunteers at 05:15. But kids, come at 05:45. It's a regular club night.
Alright. Cool. There are sign up sheets. I saw somebody down there investigating and looking over their calendar to see when the when the times might line up for them to be able to do connect hour. Feel free to do that.
Addie Hair is down there this morning, and she is in charge of that. That's her phone number if you'd like to sign up for connect hour or for helping out with Awana. There's a men's gathering study on Thursdays at 11:55 in the Fellowship Hall, kind of a stop at one, so you can know it's gonna end at 01:00. Come and go as you need it. That's fun.
They're going through the book. We're going through the book of James. I've missed the past couple, but come and go as you need to. And I think that's it. Yes.
Nick. Thank you to all volunteers who came yesterday. We had a very, very large, very large funeral for Kelly Krausz, and we had a lot of people that just showed up to help out with everything associated with that. Okay. And so if you have a gathering at your house this evening and you would like to take some sandwiches, there are plenty of them here.
That's good. So you can let Nick know and he will direct you towards. And the the work does not normally cater, but they catered yesterday. And and it's that we have a lot of food left over. So I think that's it.
That's good. How are you all doing this morning? I bet that 11:00 service is gonna fill up today. Yeah. Yeah.
We've got this is the way to do it. Would you stand and we're gonna, keep on singing God's praises.
I love you, Lord, for your mercy never fails me. All my days, I've been held in your hands. From the moment that I wake up until I lay my hand, I will sing of the
goodness of God. Let's sing of his faithfulness all around us.
I love your voice. You have led me through the fire. In darkest night, you are close like no other. I've known you as a father. I've known you as a friend.
And I've lived in the goodness of God.
And Lord, if we look back, we can see your goodness in the in the valleys and on the and on the mountaintops too. Lord, thank you for being with us and leading us through. And and I think specifically through very, very difficult and and dark times. Thank you, Lord, that you are there. You are present.
You are active. You are working. Even when we can't understand why why hard things are happen, we we know that you are with us and that you are faithful, that you are loving, that you're kind, that you're gracious, that you're working all things for our good, for your glory. Would you remind us of that this morning, God, as we sing to you? In Jesus' name.
Amen.
Joy seeping me through pain. I mountain I could not climb. In desperation, I turned to heaven and spoke your name
Jesus
Christ, my living hope.
His resurrection Man, you can have a seat here for a moment. This is the worship through giving part of the service, and I'll invite the ushers to come on forward, and we're going to sing the Lord's prayer. But before we sing it, I thought we could say it together. Maybe some of you grew up with that tradition in your church of saying the Lord's prayer. But would you join me?
I'll start us off, and would you join in? It's our father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.
Right here in my heart. Father, let you came and come. Father, let you be done. Earth has an heaven right
It's time. Children's Church is downstairs.
Kim?
Who? Glenn. Alright. Glenn. There he is.
Okay. It's it's my day. So probably as most of you have heard, just some of the elder board periodically over the last few weeks, and I think we have one more. Just sharing a little about our test
Hello? There we go.
It's got a red light, but we'll see how we go. So anyway, today's my day. So I'm glad to share a little about
There you go. Okay.
Oh, alright. So anyway, I my name is Glenn Owings. My wife is Liz. We have four kids, Logan, Caleb, Timber, and Sealy. We've been coming to First Bee since about 2015.
Growing up, I grew up in Missoula, Montana. My folks were strong believers and grew up going to church there. I think, kind of as I, you know, think back to my testimony, anytime I tell people about my background, I think of some key role models and key kind of benchmark moments that were decisional for me. And important kind of inflection points of, you know, where it was like really decision time for me, and my faith. You know, I think the first and most important role models for me were my dad and my granddad and their faith.
My grandfather was the first in our family and in his family to become a believer, and that legacy really was important to us. And he was, until the day he died, just amazing about sharing his faith. Totally unashamed, had a lot of just miraculous miraculous interventions of God in his life. And so, that was really important to me. And then as I kind of grew into a little bit older, and in the high school years, I had some mentors through school and youth activities that were just really important to my life.
And showed me what it was like to be a loving husband, and really serve God living out their faith, and what that looked like in a meaningful way. And so, those were some things that are really important. And then, I think as one really important moment in my life is between high school and college, I went on a mountaineering school for thirty days in the wilderness. A group of people I didn't know, and it was like, I could have been anybody to these people, right? And it was like, who am I gonna be?
What's my identity gonna be? Is it gonna be what I know is true? Or am I gonna kind of fall into line with this other crew? And so, at that moment, I really remember deciding like, this is me. This is my faith.
And this is my identity as in Christ. And that is who I want to be. So, was a big moment. And then, know, Liz and I got married really young. We had kids really young.
I mean, we've always tried and we have to always keep pushing to push back against the things of the world, and comfort, and worldly goals. And we try to keep pushing forward toward what God has for us, and whether that makes sense in a worldly perspective or not. So, that's really what we try to do, and that's kind of where we're going. So, everybody's kind of said some strengths they have or some things like that. Mine are probably discernment, leadership, and service.
I love to serve and be helpful. So, anyway, that's it. Thank you all.
Thank you, Glenn. Surely not our Lord. We're back to our harmony of the gospel study. We've concentrating for a long time on Matthew, Mark, and Luke and looking at these things. I I will say before we even begin, this week was a extreme ministry week.
Extreme ministry week with serving the Krausz family and preparing for honoring memorial yesterday, but also there was a pretty significant auto automotive wreck in the middle of the week. Ben Upton is fine. If you're wondering, if you've heard he was in a wreck, he's fine. He's recovering, but it was a it was a it was an all nighter Wednesday night to Thursday morning. And he is fine in surgery, has repaired now femur and ankle and a few other various little injuries, but that that could have been so much worse than it was.
Taxing on us as it was, it could have been so much worse. So I'm trying to get back into this study and normally I break it down, I go verse by verse. We're going section by section today instead of verse by verse. But this harmony of the gospels. I'm gonna start off and go through each one of them.
We're at that place of we're finishing up Tuesday night and Wednesday of Holy Week, and then we're getting into Thursday. I'm gonna give you an assignment at the end of the time and if I forget, Carl remind me. There's an assignment before next week. I want for us to really engage the scripture before Easter this year. So I've got a couple more Sundays here and I'm gonna cover Wednesday, Thursday and then before Easter, I wanna cover Good Friday.
So that's what we're getting in. Today is a little bit of Tuesday, all of Wednesday, tiny little bit of Thursday and then we'll cover Good Friday next week. So here we are, Matthew twenty six one through five, Mark 14 and Luke 21. When Jesus had finished all these words, you remember what happened last week? Two whole chapters of Matthew.
Right? Two whole chapters of the eschatology stuff at the end of Matthew. When Jesus had finished all these words, he said to his disciples, you know that after two days of Passover is coming, son of man is gonna be handed over for crucifixion. That's as plain spoken as it can be, still surprised us. At that time, the chief priest and the elders of the people were gathered together in the courtyard of the high priest named Caiaphas, where two days from now, we're gonna see a kangaroo court playing out.
They plotted together to arrest Jesus covertly and kill him. That was their plan. They made the plan. But they were saying not during the festival though, otherwise a riot might occur among the people. We don't want that.
Rome, the government above us. We don't want to cause trouble because that'll be oppressive for us and we don't want that. Mark says, now the Passover and Festival of Unleavened Bread was two days away. The chief priests and scribes were seeking how to arrest him covertly and kill him, but they were saying, not during the festival. We don't want to do this right now.
Otherwise, there'll be a riot of the people. Riots are bad for us. We don't want that to happen. They had a measure of power, but they had the Roman government over them. Anything but a riot.
We don't want a riot. Luke. Now during the day, he was teaching in the temple, but at evening, he'd go out and spend the night on the mountain that's called Olivet. That's what we had last week was Olivet discourse and all the people would get up very early in the morning. They'd come to the him, see him in the temple and to listen to him.
Now the feast of unleavened bread which is called the Passover was approaching and the chief priest and the scribes are trying to find a way to put him to death since they were afraid of the people. Jesus had gained a crowd, they were taking the attention off of these rulers and they didn't like that. And so they were conspiring. They had already decided in their mind what they're gonna do. This is what we want.
That's what we're going for. Alright. Next. One of the 12 named Judas Iscariot went to those chief priests and said, what are you willing to give me to betray him to you? It's known that they're conspiring against him.
It's known the politics of the situation, and they set out for him 30 pieces of silver. From then on, he looked for a good opportunity to betray Jesus. Now, the chief priests and scribes, they had already set their minds. They're trying to kill Jesus, but they're doing it in an opportune way that will not cause them any political damage. Judas looks and he's going, I might gain from this.
That's what it sounds like in Matthew. Let's see what Mark Mark says, then Judas Iscariot who was one of the 12 went off to the chief priest in order to betray him to them, and they were delighted when they heard this. This is the easiest way it could happen. One of his own betrays him. Yeah.
That's great. And they were delighted when they heard this. They promised to give him money, and he began seeking how to betray him at an opportune time. So he was looking for the moment. Luke brings us Luke is a doctor.
Luke brings us spiritual into this. He says, and Satan entered Judas, the one called Iscariot who belonged to the number of the 12. And he left and he discussed with the chief priests and officers how he was to betray him to them, and they were delighted. They were delighted. How are we gonna get him?
I mean, he's got people around him all the time. They're always around him, and he's got a loyal band all around him all the time. Peter's rough to deal with. They were delighted. They agreed to give him money and so he consented.
Oh, so now Judas is consenting. Right? He has purposed in his heart what it is that he'll do. Chief priests and scribes already have. Now Judas has too.
So he consented. He began looking for good opportunity to betray him to them away from the crowd. Let's not do this where it will cause a riot. Alright. Next.
This is how much we're covering with the next. Now on the first day of the unleavened bread, this is the next day. Okay? So this by the way, up until this point, it's spy Wednesday. That's what they call it.
If you're looking at Good Friday, Maundy Thursday, spy Wednesday is the day that Judas conspired. That's traditionally, we just add that name. But now on the first day of the unleavened bread, the disciples came to Jesus and said, well, where do you want us to prepare for you to eat the Passover? And he said, go into the city to a certain man, say to him the teacher says, my time is near. I'm keeping the Passover at your house with my disciples.
And the disciples did as Jesus had directed him. This is kind of vague, isn't it? And they prepared the Passover. Now when evening came, Jesus was reclining at the table with the 12. That's Matthew.
Mark says, the first day of the unleavened bread, same time period, Thursday morning at some point, when the Passover lamb was being sacrificed, his disciples said to him, where do you want us to go and prepare for you to eat the Passover? And he sent two of his disciples, now it's narrowing it down, two of them, and said to them, go into the city, there's a man carrying a pitch of water, pitcher of water and he will meet you and you follow him and wherever he enters, say to the owner of the house, the teacher says, where is my guest room in which I may eat the Passover with my disciples? And he himself will show you a large upstairs room, the upper room. Large upstairs room, furnished and ready and prepare for us there, you two disciples. And those two disciples left and they came to that city and found everything just as he had told them, big surprise there.
And they prepared the Passover. And when it was evening, he came with the 12. When you see an asterisk in the New American Standard Bible, the little asterisk is not statistical. It it means that that's a historical present. It's a storytelling device.
So if I were to say, and his disciples say to him, when it was evening, he comes with the 12. It's like in the moment, gets you in the flow of the story. I keep breaking it up by changing books, but it's it's a story making, storytelling device. Now, the first day of the unleavened bread came on which Passover lamb was to be sacrificed and so Jesus sent Peter and John. So it gets it's vague in Matthew, the disciples went.
Mark says two of them went. It wasn't Judas. Okay? Judas was looking for a time to betray him and he sent two of them and they were Peter and John. He said, y'all go and prepare.
Y'all heard the y'all, didn't you? Y'all go and prepare the Passover for us so that we may eat it and they said to him, where do you want for us to prepare it? And he said, when you enter the city, a man carrying a pitcher of water will meet you. Jesus had already kind of set this up with the folks ahead of time, but the disciples didn't know. Right?
Jesus is working even when you don't see it. He is doing stuff even when you don't recognize it. He is going ahead of you. And he said, when you've entered the city, man will carry a pitch of water. Follow him into the house.
It's a little cloak and dagger and you shall say to the owner of that house. The teacher says to you, where is the guest room in which I may eat the Passover with my disciples? And he'll show you a large furnished upstairs room, prepare it there. And they left and they found everything just as he had told them. They were obedient and they found everything just as he had told them and they prepared the Passover.
Now when the hour came, he reclined at the table and the apostles with him and he said to them, I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. He's telling them again, it's coming. Festive time of year, it's somber too, but it's a festive time when they remember God's deliverance. I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer for. I say to you, I shall not eat it again until it's fulfilled in the kingdom of God.
I won't be here this time next year. Right? I'm gonna switch over to John. I don't do that very often in the synoptic gospel study, but John John seems to fill in the details where the Matthew, Mark, and Luke leave some things out. Now, before the feast of the Passover, Jesus knowing that his hour had come.
Oh, how many times in the book of John up to this point it say, my hour has not yet come. My hour has not yet come. My hour has not yet come. But now, before the feast of the Passover, Jesus knowing that his hour had come, that he would depart from this world to the father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the very end.
And during supper, the devil having already put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon to betray him. And we know he has already decided that. He's already assented to it. He's already made the deal. During supper, the devil having already put it into the heart of Judas, the son of Simon to betray him Jesus, knowing that the father handed over all things over to him.
He has all the authority in heaven and on earth, and that he had come forth from God and he was going back to God. He got up from supper and he laid his outer garments aside and he took out a towel and he tied it around himself. I read something the other day that said, if you knew you had one day left on earth, what would you do? Jesus washes feet. Jesus washes feet.
He serves. Jesus washes the disciples feet. You can read that yourself. John thirteen five through 20 is that. And you all heard Hunter Summons about it if you've been in church for a long time.
But Jesus washes the disciples feet. This next section, I'm gonna read from all of them. And you see how the synoptics have a bit of information and John gives a bit more. That's where I'm trying to get to today. So we have seen the chief priests and scribes have made up their mind.
They are in power. They want to remain in power. They don't want anything that threatens that power. Judas sees an opportunity. Now, in the book of John, we see John say, Judas pilfered from the money bag here and there.
And we hear Judas having some worldly inclinations. A lot of people, I think the best that we can assume for Judas was that he did want for Jesus to establish his kingdom here on earth, and so he was making the moves necessary to force Jesus's hand. That's the best we can think of for Judas. Okay? He wanted to set in motion the events that would put Jesus in the place of earthly power.
And so he did what he did, might have taken the 30, but it really wasn't about the money. It was more about taking over the control, kicking these dirty Romans out. Here we go, Matthew. And as they were eating, last supper, he said, truly I say to you that one of you will betray me. But being deeply grieved, they began saying to him, each one of them, surely it's not I, Lord.
That's actually a humble response to one of you will betray me. That's a pretty humble response is to go, oh, I hope it's not me. Really, I don't want to do that. He's my Lord. I don't wanna do anything that would cause him any trouble.
I don't want to do anything that would that would bring me out. I believe this is God's man. I believe this is the Messiah, the anointed one. I don't wanna do anything contrary to him. One of y'all is gonna betray me.
Lord, surely it's not I. Please tell me it's not me. That's a humble response. That's not a that that's somebody who's made the decision to follow after Christ even when it's difficult and finding out that it's going to be hard. Finding out there's gonna be a there's gonna be a betrayal saying, I don't want that to be me.
Please Lord, no. Surely, it's not I, Lord. And he answered, he who dipped his hand with me in the bowl is the one who'll betray me. They're eating together. Table fellowship is so important in the New Testament.
To be eating together is a is a communal act. Right? We are communing together. Communion. We we call it communion.
Right? He's right here with us. He's been with us a long time and he's dipped his hand with me in the bowl. He's the one who betrayed me. The son of man is going away just as as it is written about him, but woe to the man by whom the son of man is betrayed.
Woah. It would have been good for that man if he had not been born. And Judas who was betraying him said, surely it's not I, Rabbi. Surely it's not me. He said the same thing everybody else said, but he had purposed in his heart to betray him.
He knew it was happening. He was trying to conceal it, and Jesus says to him, you've said it yourself. Not only have you made the decision, now you're lying about it and trying to cover it up. Mark, and as they were reclining the table of need, Jesus said, truly, I say to you that one of you will betray me, one who is eating with me right now. And they began to be grieved and to say to him one by one, surely not I.
Oh, that is so upsetting to think I might betray my Lord, my master. But he said to him, it is one of the 12, the one who dips bread with me in this bowl. For the son of man is going away just as it is written about him, but woe to that man by whom the son of man is betrayed. It would be would have been good for that man if he had not been born. Luke, but behold the hand of the one betraying me is with mine on this table.
Now, they were all sitting with him right at the table. This leads to the surely not I, I'm right here with you. I've been with you Lord. For indeed the son of man is going as it has been determined. It's happening, but woe to the man by whom it is betrayed, he is betrayed.
And they began to debate among themselves which one of them it was gonna be, who's gonna do this. I bet it's gonna be you. No. I hope it's not me. I hope it's not me.
Please don't let it be me. Now this is the same place where Jesus says, Peter, you're gonna deny me three times. Right? So that's coming. That's just a just a little ways away from right here.
My whole well, let's keep going. Let's let let's keep letting the scripture talk and I'll I'll wrap up. When Jesus had said these things, he became troubled in spirit and he testified. This is from John. After he had girded himself and washed their feet.
When Jesus had said these things, he became troubled in spirit and he testified and he said, truly, truly, I say to you that one of you will betray me, barely, barely. I learned Spanish by the way by trying to read the Bible in Spanish. And there's something you hit a lot, and it's truly truly, verily, verily. Right? Truly, truly, I say to you.
And I I hit that and I go, wow. Truly, truly, like this is gonna happen. There's no doubt about it. That would that would put me in the place of surely not I, Lord. Please, don't let it be me.
What do I need to do? Now Judas had purposed in his heart, he was gonna betray him. The chief priests and scribes had purposed in their heart, they were gonna betray him quietly so that they didn't get their power interrupted. Well, the disciples began looking at one another at a loss to know of which one he was speaking. And lying back on Jesus' chest was one of his disciples whom Jesus loved.
If you remember Leonardo's painting of the last supper, John is leaning back on Jesus. He's leaning back on him. One of his disciples whom Jesus loved. And so Simon Peter nodded to this disciple, Peter to John. They're the ones who set up the room.
Right? They're the ones sent out ahead. He says, ask him. Just ask him. You're right there next to him.
Ask him how it's gonna be. Tell us who it is of whom he is speaking. He then simply leaned back on Jesus and said, Lord, who is it? And Jesus answered, the man is the one for whom I shall dip the piece of bread and give it to him. And the others, it might seem a little vague, but he's saying, I'm handing it over to him.
And so then, when he had dipped the piece of bread, he took it, he gave it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, and after this, Satan entered into him. After this, now, he's already been visited with the temptation. He's already purposed in his heart that he's gonna do it. Therefore, Jesus said to him, what you are doing, do quickly. Go now.
Now, none of those reclining at the table knew for what purpose he had said this to Judas. For some were assuming since Judas kept the money box that Jesus was saying to him, buy the things we need for the feast or else that he was gonna go give something to the poor that was would have been normal. So after receiving the piece of bread, he left immediately and it was night. Let's go back to Luke to carry on the story. And the dispute also developed among them as to which one of them was regarded as being the greatest.
And he said to him, the king he said to them, Jesus said to the 11 disciples at this point, the kings of the Gentiles rule or domineer over them. It is a top down authority structure and those who have authority over them are called benefactors because we're so benevolent and we give, but they're oppressing them too. It's not this way for you though. Rather, the one who is the greatest among you must become like the youngest, the one with no power, and the leader must be like the servant. He just washed their feet.
He showed them the example. For who is greater, the one who reclines at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who reclines at the table? But I'm telling you, I'm among you as the one who serves. Y'all are the ones who have stood by me in my trials.
Judas is out of the room at this point. Y'all are the ones who have stood by me in my trials and just as my father has granted me a kingdom, I'm granting that to you that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom forevermore and you will sit on thrones judging the 12 tribes of Israel. These folks who have purposed in their heart to set themselves up against Jesus have set themselves up against God. That includes the chief priests and scribes, it includes Judas, it will include a lot of people who are looking for looking out for themselves, who would gain his life or lose it, the one who would give his life will gain it. This is this is that place where what have we purposed in our heart?
What have we purposed in our heart? If we are his disciples, what are we looking out for? Are we looking out for his purposes? Are we serving him? Are we serving our own purposes?
May we all answer the question because we will. We we do betray our faith. We do betray our master. But can it be a surprise? Can it be surely not our Lord?
I don't want to do that. Would you show me where would you show me my missteps? Would you show me? I don't want to make the decision. I don't want to be tempted and go for it.
I don't want to be pulled off to the side. I don't wanna be doing the devil's work. I wanna be doing your work, Lord. Well, he's told us how to do his work. He says, be serving one another.
Be serving one another. Put yourself last. Put his will first. Seek how we may serve him. Surely not I, Lord.
Would you pray with me? God, I pray that as Easter approaches, we look to see the humble walking forward of heading towards Calvary, heading towards the cross, heading towards the trouble. I see that you are deeply troubled, the text says. You are deeply troubled and you showed them the way, all the way to the very end. Washing feet was not the ultimate example.
Giving over your life was the ultimate example. The political realities, were there. There's a pressure cooker experience, and when you mentioned that one of you will betray me, there was one of them that knew who it was. Lord, may we not ever make a deal with the devil. May we never for our own purposes, because we think we know better than you ever make a deal with the devil.
Giving Judas the benefit of the doubt and thinking that he knew better about when your kingdom would come. When is it gonna be? When is it gonna be? When is it gonna be? When's it gonna be on the Olivet Discourse?
When's it gonna be? When's it gonna be? And wanting to push that forward, may we be the servants of all. May we be looking out towards a lost and dying world and seeking to serve them, Lord. Seeking to serve and seeing how we can bring them into the kingdom.
Would you show us your will for us? Would you show us your way? And Lord, may it never be that we would make a deal with the devil and try to cover it up. In Jesus name, Lord, I pray that you would bring us into complete unity and complete harmony. I mean that across this congregation, but also across denominations, and that you would heal all of the rifts of the past, that you would bring us together, Lord.
In Jesus name, amen. I'm gonna invite the band back up, but Carl just reminded me. I have an assignment for you. So John 13 through 16 is the upper room discourse. The upper room discourse is what happens before the crucifixion.
He's got time. Judas is out of the room. Those who are gathered there are of the place of going, surely it's not me. I don't ever wanna be guilty of that, Lord. We are all in that place.
I'm assuming all of us are in that place. We don't wanna be guilty of stepping away from what he has for us. We wanna walk in the steps that God has established in advance. If that's the case, read John 13 through 16, all the chapters 13 through 16, and then 17 is where he steps out into the garden. Watch and pray, stay with him, listen to what he prays, and all of that will proceed next week's sermon.
We're gonna get to Good Friday. So I'm asking you to finish Thursday on your own. Do you get that? John 13 through 17. It's four chapters of scripture.
That's better than me preaching it in fifteen minutes. Okay. Alright. Would you stand? And we're gonna close with holy water.
God, I need it every day. It's the only thing that ever really makes me want change. Oh, I don't wanna abuse your grace. God, I need it every day.
So as we sing that song, I I started thinking about that foot washing, the holy water foot washing. He said to Peter, if if you don't let me wash you, I don't you don't have anything to do with me. Right? If you don't let me do the washing, you don't have anything to do with me. So may it never be that we make a deal with the devil, and may we allow Christ to wash and make us clean.
May we trust in that. He says that if we will humble ourselves before him, if we will ask for his forgiveness, he will give it to us. Lord Jesus, may we live knowing that we have been forgiven and that we can be forgiving. Would you allow us to live in that place where we have taken your word for it that you will repay. Everyone in this room and everyone in this world will be either justly condemned or mercifully forgiven.
We want to allow for you to do that. You have commanded us to forgive. Would you allow us to just lay it down and move through it? In Jesus name we pray. Amen.
May God bless and keep you and make his face to shine upon you and give you peace that is transferable, that you can give it to others. In Jesus name, amen.
