  • Matthew 26 Primary synoptic text for the Last Supper and betrayal narrative

1 When Jesus had finished all these words, he said to his disciples,

2 “You know that after two days the Passover is coming, and the Son of Man will be delivered up to be crucified.”

3 Then the chief priests, the scribes, and the elders of the people were gathered together in the court of the high priest, who was called Caiaphas.

4 They took counsel together that they might take Jesus by deceit, and kill him.

5 But they said, “Not during the feast, lest a riot occur among the people.”

6 Now when Jesus was in Bethany, in the house of Simon the leper,

7 a woman came to him having an alabaster jar of very expensive ointment, and she poured it on his head as he sat at the table.

8 But when his disciples saw this, they were indignant, saying, “Why this waste?

9 For this ointment might have been sold for much, and given to the poor.”

10 However, knowing this, Jesus said to them, “Why do you trouble the woman? She has done a good work for me.

11 For you always have the poor with you; but you don’t always have me.

12 For in pouring this ointment on my body, she did it to prepare me for burial.

13 Most certainly I tell you, wherever this Good News is preached in the whole world, what this woman has done will also be spoken of as a memorial of her.”

14 Then one of the twelve, who was called Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests,

15 and said, “What are you willing to give me, that I should deliver him to you?” They weighed out for him thirty pieces of silver.

16 From that time he sought opportunity to betray him.

17 Now on the first day of unleavened bread, the disciples came to Jesus, saying to him, “Where do you want us to prepare for you to eat the Passover?”

18 He said, “Go into the city to a certain person, and tell him, ‘The Teacher says, “My time is at hand. I will keep the Passover at your house with my disciples.”’”

19 The disciples did as Jesus commanded them, and they prepared the Passover.

20 Now when evening had come, he was reclining at the table with the twelve disciples.

21 As they were eating, he said, “Most certainly I tell you that one of you will betray me.”

22 They were exceedingly sorrowful, and each began to ask him, “It isn’t me, is it, Lord?”

23 He answered, “He who dipped his hand with me in the dish, the same will betray me.

24 The Son of Man goes, even as it is written of him, but woe to that man through whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would be better for that man if he had not been born.”

25 Judas, who betrayed him, answered, “It isn’t me, is it, Rabbi?” He said to him, “You said it.”

26 As they were eating, Jesus took bread, gave thanks for it, and broke it. He gave to the disciples, and said, “Take, eat; this is my body.”

27 He took the cup, gave thanks, and gave to them, saying, “All of you drink it,

28 for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is poured out for many for the remission of sins.

29 But I tell you that I will not drink of this fruit of the vine from now on, until that day when I drink it anew with you in my Father’s Kingdom.”

30 When they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.

31 Then Jesus said to them, “All of you will be made to stumble because of me tonight, for it is written, ‘I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.’

32 But after I am raised up, I will go before you into Galilee.”

33 But Peter answered him, “Even if all will be made to stumble because of you, I will never be made to stumble.”

34 Jesus said to him, “Most certainly I tell you that tonight, before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times.”

35 Peter said to him, “Even if I must die with you, I will not deny you.” All of the disciples also said likewise.

36 Then Jesus came with them to a place called Gethsemane, and said to his disciples, “Sit here, while I go there and pray.”

37 He took with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and began to be sorrowful and severely troubled.

38 Then he said to them, “My soul is exceedingly sorrowful, even to death. Stay here, and watch with me.”

39 He went forward a little, fell on his face, and prayed, saying, “My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass away from me; nevertheless, not what I desire, but what you desire.”

40 He came to the disciples, and found them sleeping, and said to Peter, “What, couldn’t you watch with me for one hour?

41 Watch and pray, that you don’t enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”

42 Again, a second time he went away, and prayed, saying, “My Father, if this cup can’t pass away from me unless I drink it, your desire be done.”

43 He came again and found them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy.

44 He left them again, went away, and prayed a third time, saying the same words.

45 Then he came to his disciples, and said to them, “Sleep on now, and take your rest. Behold, the hour is at hand, and the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.

46 Arise, let’s be going. Behold, he who betrays me is at hand.”

47 While he was still speaking, behold, Judas, one of the twelve, came, and with him a great multitude with swords and clubs, from the chief priests and elders of the people.

48 Now he who betrayed him gave them a sign, saying, “Whoever I kiss, he is the one. Seize him.”

49 Immediately he came to Jesus, and said, “Hail, Rabbi!” and kissed him.

50 Jesus said to him, “Friend, why are you here?” Then they came and laid hands on Jesus, and took him.

51 Behold, one of those who were with Jesus stretched out his hand, and drew his sword, and struck the servant of the high priest, and struck off his ear.

52 Then Jesus said to him, “Put your sword back into its place, for all those who take the sword will die by the sword.

53 Or do you think that I couldn’t ask my Father, and he would even now send me more than twelve legions of angels?

54 How then would the Scriptures be fulfilled that it must be so?”

55 In that hour Jesus said to the multitudes, “Have you come out as against a robber with swords and clubs to…

Mark 14

Parallel synoptic account of the Last Supper and betrayal narrative

1 It was now two days before the feast of the Passover and the unleavened bread, and the chief priests and the scribes sought how they might seize him by deception, and kill him.

2 For they said, “Not during the feast, because there might be a riot among the people.”

3 While he was at Bethany, in the house of Simon the leper, as he sat at the table, a woman came having an alabaster jar of ointment of pure nard—very costly. She broke the jar, and poured it over his head.

4 But there were some who were indignant among themselves, saying, “Why has this ointment been wasted?

5 For this might have been sold for more than three hundred denarii, and given to the poor.” They grumbled against her.

6 But Jesus said, “Leave her alone. Why do you trouble her? She has done a good work for me.

7 For you always have the poor with you, and whenever you want to, you can do them good; but you will not always have me.

8 She has done what she could. She has anointed my body beforehand for the burying.

9 Most certainly I tell you, wherever this Good News may be preached throughout the whole world, that which this woman has done will also be spoken of for a memorial of her.”

10 Judas Iscariot, who was one of the twelve, went away to the chief priests, that he might deliver him to them.

11 They, when they heard it, were glad, and promised to give him money. He sought how he might conveniently deliver him.

12 On the first day of unleavened bread, when they sacrificed the Passover, his disciples asked him, “Where do you want us to go and prepare that you may eat the Passover?”

13 He sent two of his disciples, and said to them, “Go into the city, and there you will meet a man carrying a pitcher of water. Follow him,

14 and wherever he enters in, tell the master of the house, ‘The Teacher says, “Where is the guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?”’

15 He will himself show you a large upper room furnished and ready. Get ready for us there.”

16 His disciples went out, and came into the city, and found things as he had said to them, and they prepared the Passover.

17 When it was evening he came with the twelve.

18 As they sat and were eating, Jesus said, “Most certainly I tell you, one of you will betray me—he who eats with me.”

19 They began to be sorrowful, and to ask him one by one, “Surely not I?” And another said, “Surely not I?”

20 He answered them, “It is one of the twelve, he who dips with me in the dish.

21 For the Son of Man goes, even as it is written about him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would be better for that man if he had not been born.”

22 As they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had blessed, he broke it, and gave to them, and said, “Take, eat. This is my body.”

23 He took the cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave to them. They all drank of it.

24 He said to them, “This is my blood of the new covenant, which is poured out for many.

25 Most certainly I tell you, I will no more drink of the fruit of the vine, until that day when I drink it anew in God’s Kingdom.”

26 When they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.

27 Jesus said to them, “All of you will be made to stumble because of me tonight, for it is written, ‘I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered.’

28 However, after I am raised up, I will go before you into Galilee.”

29 But Peter said to him, “Although all will be offended, yet I will not.”

30 Jesus said to him, “Most certainly I tell you, that you today, even this night, before the rooster crows twice, you will deny me three times.”

31 But he spoke all the more, “If I must die with you, I will not deny you.” They all said the same thing.

32 They came to a place which was named Gethsemane. He said to his disciples, “Sit here, while I pray.”

33 He took with him Peter, James, and John, and began to be greatly troubled and distressed.

34 He said to them, “My soul is exceedingly sorrowful, even to death. Stay here, and watch.”

35 He went forward a little, and fell on the ground, and prayed that, if it were possible, the hour might pass away from him.

36 He said, “Abba, Father, all things are possible to you. Please remove this cup from me. However, not what I desire, but what you desire.”

37 He came and found them sleeping, and said to Peter, “Simon, are you sleeping? Couldn’t you watch one hour?

38 Watch and pray, that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”

39 Again he went away, and prayed, saying the same words.

40 Again he returned, and found them sleeping, for their eyes were very heavy, and they didn’t know what to answer him.

41 He came the third time, and said to them, “Sleep on now, and take your rest. It is enough. The hour has come. Behold, the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.

42 Arise, let us be going. Behold, he who betrays me is at hand.”

43 Immediately, while he was still speaking, Judas, one of the twelve, came—and with him a multitude with swords and clubs, from the chief priests, the scribes, and the elders.

44 Now he who betrayed him had given them a sign, saying, “Whomever I will kiss, that is he. Seize him, and lead him away safely.”

45 When he had come, immediately he came to him, and said, “Rabbi! Rabbi!” and kissed him.

46 They laid their hands on him, and seized him.

47 But a certain one of those who stood by drew his sword, and struck the servant of the high priest, and cut off his ear.

48 Jesus answered them, “Have you come out, as against a robber, with swords and clubs to seize me?

49 I was daily with you in the temple teaching, and you didn’t arrest me. But this is so that the Scriptures might be fulfilled.”

50 They all left him, and fled.

51 A certain young man followed him, having a linen cloth thrown around himself over his naked body. The young men grabbed him,

52 but he left the linen cloth, and fled from them naked.

53 They led Jesus away to the high priest. All the chief priests, the elders,…

Luke 21

Cited as part of the harmony of gospels study for this passage

1 He looked up, and saw the rich people who were putting their gifts into the treasury.

2 He saw a certain poor widow casting in two small brass coins.

3 He said, “Truly I tell you, this poor widow put in more than all of them,

4 for all these put in gifts for God from their abundance, but she, out of her poverty, put in all that she had to live on.”

5 As some were talking about the temple and how it was decorated with beautiful stones and gifts, he said,

6 “As for these things which you see, the days will come, in which there will not be left here one stone on another that will not be thrown down.”

7 They asked him, “Teacher, so when will these things be? What is the sign that these things are about to happen?”

8 He said, “Watch out that you don’t get led astray, for many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am he,’ and, ‘The time is at hand.’ Therefore don’t follow them.

9 When you hear of wars and disturbances, don’t be terrified, for these things must happen first, but the end won’t come immediately.”

10 Then he said to them, “Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom.

11 There will be great earthquakes, famines, and plagues in various places. There will be terrors and great signs from heaven.

12 But before all these things, they will lay their hands on you and will persecute you, delivering you up to synagogues and prisons, bringing you before kings and governors for my name’s sake.

13 It will turn out as a testimony for you.

14 Settle it therefore in your hearts not to meditate beforehand how to answer,

15 for I will give you a mouth and wisdom which all your adversaries will not be able to withstand or to contradict.

16 You will be handed over even by parents, brothers, relatives, and friends. They will cause some of you to be put to death.

17 You will be hated by all men for my name’s sake.

18 And not a hair of your head will perish.

19 “By your endurance you will win your lives.

20 “But when you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then know that its desolation is at hand.

21 Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. Let those who are in the middle of her depart. Let those who are in the country not enter therein.

22 For these are days of vengeance, that all things which are written may be fulfilled.

23 Woe to those who are pregnant and to those who nurse infants in those days! For there will be great distress in the land, and wrath to this people.

24 They will fall by the edge of the sword, and will be led captive into all the nations. Jerusalem will be trampled down by the Gentiles, until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.

25 There will be signs in the sun, moon, and stars; and on the earth anxiety of nations, in perplexity for the roaring of the sea and the waves;

26 men fainting for fear, and for expectation of the things which are coming on the world: for the powers of the heavens will be shaken.

27 Then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory.

28 But when these things begin to happen, look up, and lift up your heads, because your redemption is near.”

29 He told them a parable. “See the fig tree, and all the trees.

30 When they are already budding, you see it and know by your own selves that the summer is already near.

31 Even so you also, when you see these things happening, know that God’s Kingdom is near.

32 Most certainly I tell you, this generation will not pass away until all things are accomplished.

33 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will by no means pass away.

34 “So be careful, or your hearts will be loaded down with carousing, drunkenness, and cares of this life, and that day will come on you suddenly.

35 For it will come like a snare on all those who dwell on the surface of all the earth.

36 Therefore be watchful all the time, praying that you may be counted worthy to escape all these things that will happen, and to stand before the Son of Man.”

37 Every day Jesus was teaching in the temple, and every night he would go out and spend the night on the mountain that is called Olivet.

38 All the people came early in the morning to him in the temple to hear him.

John 13:5-20

Jesus washing the disciples feet, given as a reading assignment

5 Then he poured water into the basin, and began to wash the disciples’ feet, and to wipe them with the towel that was wrapped around him.

6 Then he came to Simon Peter. He said to him, “Lord, do you wash my feet?”

7 Jesus answered him, “You don’t know what I am doing now, but you will understand later.”

8 Peter said to him, “You will never wash my feet!” Jesus answered him, “If I don’t wash you, you have no part with me.”

9 Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head!”

10 Jesus said to him, “Someone who has bathed only needs to have his feet washed, but is completely clean. You are clean, but not all of you.”

11 For he knew him who would betray him, therefore he said, “You are not all clean.”

12 So when he had washed their feet, put his outer garment back on, and sat down again, he said to them, “Do you know what I have done to you?

13 You call me, ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord.’ You say so correctly, for so I am.

14 If I then, the Lord and the Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet.

15 For I have given you an example, that you also should do as I have done to you.

16 Most certainly I tell you, a servant is not greater than his lord, neither one who is sent greater than he who sent him.

17 If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them.

18 I don’t speak concerning all of you. I know whom I have chosen. But that the Scripture may be fulfilled, ‘He who eats bread with me has lifted up his heel against me.’

19 From now on, I tell you before it happens, that when it happens, you may believe that I am he.

20 Most certainly I tell you, he who receives whomever I send, receives me; and he who receives me, receives him who sent me.”

Upper room discourse, part of five-chapter reading assignment

1 Now before the feast of the Passover, Jesus, knowing that his time had come that he would depart from this world to the Father, having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end.

2 During supper, the devil having already put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, to betray him,

3 Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he came from God, and was going to God,

4 arose from supper, and laid aside his outer garments. He took a towel, and wrapped a towel around his waist.

21 When Jesus had said this, he was troubled in spirit, and testified, “Most certainly I tell you that one of you will betray me.”

22 The disciples looked at one another, perplexed about whom he spoke.

23 One of his disciples, whom Jesus loved, was at the table, leaning against Jesus’ breast.

24 Simon Peter therefore beckoned to him, and said to him, “Tell us who it is of whom he speaks.”

25 He, leaning back, as he was, on Jesus’ breast, asked him, “Lord, who is it?”

26 Jesus therefore answered, “It is he to whom I will give this piece of bread when I have dipped it.” So when he had dipped the piece of bread, he gave it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot.

27 After the piece of bread, then Satan entered into him. Then Jesus said to him, “What you do, do quickly.”

28 Now no man at the table knew why he said this to him.

29 For some thought, because Judas had the money box, that Jesus said to him, “Buy what things we need for the feast,” or that he should give something to the poor.

30 Therefore having received that morsel, he went out immediately. It was night.

31 When he had gone out, Jesus said, “Now the Son of Man has been glorified, and God has been glorified in him.

32 If God has been glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself, and he will glorify him immediately.

33 Little children, I will be with you a little while longer. You will seek me, and as I said to the Jews, ‘Where I am going, you can’t come,’ so now I tell you.

34 A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also love one another.

35 By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

36 Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, where are you going?” Jesus answered, “Where I am going, you can’t follow now, but you will follow afterwards.”

37 Peter said to him, “Lord, why can’t I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you.”

38 Jesus answered him, “Will you lay down your life for me? Most certainly I tell you, the rooster won’t crow until you have denied me three times.

1 “Don’t let your heart be troubled. Believe in God. Believe also in me.

2 In my Father’s house are many homes. If it weren’t so, I would have told you. I am going to prepare a place for you.

3 If I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and will receive you to myself; that where I am, you may be there also.

4 Where I go, you know, and you know the way.”

5 Thomas said to him, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going. How can we know the way?”

6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me.

7 If you had known me, you would have known my Father also. From now on, you know him, and have seen him.”

8 Philip said to him, “Lord, show us the Father, and that will be enough for us.”

9 Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you such a long time, and do you not know me, Philip? He who has seen me has seen the Father. How do you say, ‘Show us the Father?’

10 Don’t you believe that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? The words that I tell you, I speak not from myself; but the Father who lives in me does his works.

11 Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me; or else believe me for the very works’ sake.

12 Most certainly I tell you, he who believes in me, the works that I do, he will do also; and he will do greater works than these, because I am going to my Father.

13 Whatever you will ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.

14 If you will ask anything in my name, I will do it.

15 If you love me, keep my commandments.

16 I will pray to the Father, and he will give you another Counselor, that he may be with you forever,—

17 the Spirit of truth, whom the world can’t receive; for it doesn’t see him, neither knows him. You know him, for he lives with you, and will be in you.

18 I will not leave you orphans. I will come to you.

19 Yet a little while, and the world will see me no more; but you will see me. Because I live, you will live also.

20 In that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you.

21 One who has my commandments, and keeps them, that person is one who loves me. One who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him, and will reveal myself to him.”

22 Judas (not Iscariot) said to him, “Lord, what has happened that you are about to reveal yourself to us, and not to the world?”

23 Jesus answered him, “If a man loves me, he will keep my word. My Father will love him, and we will come to him, and make our home with him.

24 He who doesn’t love me doesn’t keep my words. The word which you hear isn’t mine, but the Father’s who sent me.

25 I have said these things to you, while still living with you.

26 But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things, and will remind you of all that I said to you.

27 Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you; not as the world gives, give I to you. Don’t let your heart be troubled, neither let it be fearful.

28 You heard how I told you, ‘I go away, and I come to you.’ If you loved me, you would have rejoiced, because I said ‘I am going to my Father;’ for the Father is greater than I.

29 Now I have told you before it happens so that, when it happens, you may believe.

30 I will no more speak much with you, for the prince of the world comes, and he has nothing in me.

31 But that the world may know that I love the Father, and as the Father commanded me, even so I do. Arise, let us go from here.

John 15

Upper room discourse, part of five-chapter reading assignment

1 “I am the true vine, and my Father is the farmer.

2 Every branch in me that doesn’t bear fruit, he takes away. Every branch that bears fruit, he prunes, that it may bear more fruit.

3 You are already pruned clean because of the word which I have spoken to you.

4 Remain in me, and I in you. As the branch can’t bear fruit by itself, unless it remains in the vine, so neither can you, unless you remain in me.

5 I am the vine. You are the branches. He who remains in me, and I in him, the same bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.

6 If a man doesn’t remain in me, he is thrown out as a branch, and is withered; and they gather them, throw them into the fire, and they are burned.

7 If you remain in me, and my words remain in you, you will ask whatever you desire, and it will be done for you.

8 “In this is my Father glorified, that you bear much fruit; and so you will be my disciples.

9 Even as the Father has loved me, I also have loved you. Remain in my love.

10 If you keep my commandments, you will remain in my love; even as I have kept my Father’s commandments, and remain in his love.

11 I have spoken these things to you, that my joy may remain in you, and that your joy may be made full.

12 “This is my commandment, that you love one another, even as I have loved you.

13 Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.

14 You are my friends, if you do whatever I command you.

15 No longer do I call you servants, for the servant doesn’t know what his lord does. But I have called you friends, for everything that I heard from my Father, I have made known to you.

16 You didn’t choose me, but I chose you, and appointed you, that you should go and bear fruit, and that your fruit should remain; that whatever you will ask of the Father in my name, he may give it to you.

17 “I command these things to you, that you may love one another.

18 If the world hates you, you know that it has hated me before it hated you.

19 If you were of the world, the world would love its own. But because you are not of the world, since I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you.

20 Remember the word that I said to you: ‘A servant is not greater than his lord.’ If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you. If they kept my word, they will also keep yours.

21 But all these things will they do to you for my name’s sake, because they don’t know him who sent me.

22 If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not have had sin; but now they have no excuse for their sin.

23 He who hates me, hates my Father also.

24 If I hadn’t done among them the works which no one else did, they wouldn’t have had sin. But now have they seen and also hated both me and my Father.

25 But this happened so that the word may be fulfilled which was written in their law, ‘They hated me without a cause.’

26 “When the Counselor has come, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, he will testify about me.

27 You will also testify, because you have been with me from the beginning.

John 16

Upper room discourse, part of five-chapter reading assignment

1 “I have said these things to you so that you wouldn’t be caused to stumble.

2 They will put you out of the synagogues. Yes, the time comes that whoever kills you will think that he offers service to God.

3 They will do these things because they have not known the Father, nor me.

4 But I have told you these things, so that when the time comes, you may remember that I told you about them. I didn’t tell you these things from the beginning, because I was with you.

5 But now I am going to him who sent me, and none of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’

6 But because I have told you these things, sorrow has filled your heart.

7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth: It is to your advantage that I go away, for if I don’t go away, the Counselor won’t come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you.

8 When he has come, he will convict the world about sin, about righteousness, and about judgment;

9 about sin, because they don’t believe in me;

10 about righteousness, because I am going to my Father, and you won’t see me any more;

11 about judgment, because the prince of this world has been judged.

12 “I have yet many things to tell you, but you can’t bear them now.

13 However when he, the Spirit of truth, has come, he will guide you into all truth, for he will not speak from himself; but whatever he hears, he will speak. He will declare to you things that are coming.

14 He will glorify me, for he will take from what is mine, and will declare it to you.

15 All things whatever the Father has are mine; therefore I said that he takes of mine, and will declare it to you.

16 A little while, and you will not see me. Again a little while, and you will see me.”

17 Some of his disciples therefore said to one another, “What is this that he says to us, ‘A little while, and you won’t see me, and again a little while, and you will see me;’ and, ‘Because I go to the Father’?”

18 They said therefore, “What is this that he says, ‘A little while’? We don’t know what he is saying.”

19 Therefore Jesus perceived that they wanted to ask him, and he said to them, “Do you inquire among yourselves concerning this, that I said, ‘A little while, and you won’t see me, and again a little while, and you will see me?’

20 Most certainly I tell you, that you will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice. You will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will be turned into joy.

21 A woman, when she gives birth, has sorrow, because her time has come. But when she has delivered the child, she doesn’t remember the anguish any more, for the joy that a human being is born into the world.

22 Therefore you now have sorrow, but I will see you again, and your heart will rejoice, and no one will take your joy away from you.

23 “In that day you will ask me no questions. Most certainly I tell you, whatever you may ask of the Father in my name, he will give it to you.

24 Until now, you have asked nothing in my name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be made full.

25 I have spoken these things to you in figures of speech. But the time is coming when I will no more speak to you in figures of speech, but will tell you plainly about the Father.

26 In that day you will ask in my name; and I don’t say to you, that I will pray to the Father for you,

27 for the Father himself loves you, because you have loved me, and have believed that I came from God.

28 I came from the Father, and have come into the world. Again, I leave the world, and go to the Father.”

29 His disciples said to him, “Behold, now you are speaking plainly, and using no figures of speech.

30 Now we know that you know all things, and don’t need for anyone to question you. By this we believe that you came from God.”

31 Jesus answered them, “Do you now believe?

32 Behold, the time is coming, yes, and has now come, that you will be scattered, everyone to his own place, and you will leave me alone. Yet I am not alone, because the Father is with me.

33 I have told you these things, that in me you may have peace. In the world you have oppression; but cheer up! I have overcome the world.”

John 17

Jesus praying in the garden after leaving the upper room, part of reading assignment

1 Jesus said these things, and lifting up his eyes to heaven, he said, “Father, the time has come. Glorify your Son, that your Son may also glorify you;

2 even as you gave him authority over all flesh, so he will give eternal life to all whom you have given him.

3 This is eternal life, that they should know you, the only true God, and him whom you sent, Jesus Christ.

4 I glorified you on the earth. I have accomplished the work which you have given me to do.

5 Now, Father, glorify me with your own self with the glory which I had with you before the world existed.

6 I revealed your name to the people whom you have given me out of the world. They were yours, and you have given them to me. They have kept your word.

7 Now they have known that all things whatever you have given me are from you,

8 for the words which you have given me I have given to them, and they received them, and knew for sure that I came from you, and they have believed that you sent me.

9 I pray for them. I don’t pray for the world, but for those whom you have given me, for they are yours.

10 All things that are mine are yours, and yours are mine, and I am glorified in them.

11 I am no more in the world, but these are in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, keep them through your name which you have given me, that they may be one, even as we are.

12 While I was with them in the world, I kept them in your name. Those whom you have given me I have kept. None of them is lost, except the son of destruction, that the Scripture might be fulfilled.

13 But now I come to you, and I say these things in the world, that they may have my joy made full in themselves.

14 I have given them your word. The world hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.

15 I pray not that you would take them from the world, but that you would keep them from the evil one.

16 They are not of the world even as I am not of the world.

17 Sanctify them in your truth. Your word is truth.

18 As you sent me into the world, even so I have sent them into the world.

19 For their sakes I sanctify myself, that they themselves also may be sanctified in truth.

20 Not for these only do I pray, but for those also who will believe in me through their word,

21 that they may all be one; even as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be one in us; that the world may believe that you sent me.

22 The glory which you have given me, I have given to them; that they may be one, even as we are one;

23 I in them, and you in me, that they may be perfected into one; that the world may know that you sent me, and loved them, even as you loved me.

24 Father, I desire that they also whom you have given me be with me where I am, that they may see my glory, which you have given me, for you loved me before the foundation of the world.

25 Righteous Father, the world hasn’t known you, but I knew you; and these knew that you sent me.

26 I made known to them your name, and will make it known; that the love with which you loved me may be in them, and I in them.”

Recap

The message in order, in a few minutes of reading.

On Sunday morning, Pastor Carl led the congregation through the events of Holy Week from Wednesday through Thursday night, tracing the conspiracy against Jesus, Judas's betrayal deal, and the Last Supper. The message centered on the question each disciple asked: "Surely not I, Lord?" The congregation was invited to ask that same question honestly about their own lives.

What was said

The section of Holy Week called Spy Wednesday gets its name from what happens first in the passage: the chief priests and scribes were already plotting to arrest and kill Jesus, but they were afraid of a riot and wanted to do it quietly. Into that situation walked Judas Iscariot, one of the Twelve, and offered to hand Jesus over. Matthew shows him asking what they were willing to pay. Luke adds that Satan had already put the idea into his heart. The religious leaders were delighted, because he gave them exactly what they needed: an inside man who could deliver Jesus away from the crowds.

Glenn noted before the sermon that Jesus had already been telling the disciples plainly what was coming. By the time Thursday arrived and the Passover preparations were being made, he told them again: he would be handed over for crucifixion. Yet they still did not fully grasp it. The arrangements for the upper room showed that Jesus had already set things in motion ahead of his disciples. Peter and John were sent into the city with a specific sign to look for, and they found everything exactly as he had said. The point Pastor Carl drew from this is that when Jesus gives a command, he has already gone before you to prepare the way.

At the supper itself, Jesus said plainly that one of those eating with him would betray him. The disciples were deeply grieved, and each one began asking, "Surely not I, Lord?" All of them asked it, including Judas, except that Judas said "Rabbi" rather than "Lord." Jesus told Judas he had said it himself. John's account fills in the detail: Jesus dipped a piece of bread and gave it to Judas, and after Judas received it he left immediately into the night. The others assumed Jesus had sent him on an errand.

The best possible reading of Judas's motive, as Pastor Carl put it, is that Judas believed a political revolution was coming and was trying to force Jesus's hand, to make something happen when Jesus seemed reluctant. But that was Judas's understanding of how things should work, not God's will. Jesus had told them repeatedly that this was not the kind of kingdom he was establishing, and he had been walking with purpose toward the cross since early in Luke's account.

What followed inside the upper room, recorded in Luke, is almost jarring. With Judas gone and Jesus having just washed their feet, a dispute broke out among the remaining eleven about which of them was the greatest. Jesus turned it around: the kings of the Gentiles call themselves benefactors while lording it over people, but among his followers the greatest must become like the youngest and the leader like a servant. He pointed to himself as the example. He had all authority in heaven and on earth, and he spent that last evening on his knees washing feet.

The closing thought Pastor Carl returned to was the contrast between Judas, who had made up his mind and then lied to cover it, and the eleven, who were genuinely troubled and searching themselves. The assignment he left the congregation with was to read John 13 through 17, the upper room discourse and Jesus's prayer in the garden, before next Sunday's service on Good Friday. The hope he expressed was that each person would be in the camp of those asking sincerely: "Surely not I, Lord, but if there is anything in my life betraying you, please show me so I can put it down."

Doing a Bible study?

Here is a guide we have prepared for you: the passages in order, questions for the group, and room to write.

  1. Glenn shared how his grandfather never let a conversation go by without working in his testimony, even as a mechanic and logger. Who in your own life has modeled that kind of unselfconscious, everyday witness, and what effect did it have on you?
  2. The pastor pointed out that when Jesus sent Peter and John into the city, He had already spoken to the man with the pitcher and the owner of the house before they ever arrived. Where in your own life have you looked back and seen that God had gone ahead of you before you obeyed a hard command?

and 3 more questions in the guide

Speaker 1Good morning, everybody. How are you? Good. How'd you sleep? Good.
I got up this morning the time I usually leave the house. Would you all stand with me? And we're gonna sing blessed assurance. Isn't it good to know that you can know? Yeah.
Blessed assurance. Jesus is mine.
Speaker 2Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine. Oh, what a foretaste of glory divine. Heir of salvation, purchase of God, born of his spirit, washed in his blood. This is my story. This is my song, praising my savior all day long.
This is my story. This is my song, praising my savior all the day long. Perfect submission,
Speaker 1world.
Speaker 2To whispers of love. This is my story. This is my song praising my savior all day long. This is my story. This is my song.
Praising my savior all the day long. Perfect submission, all is at rest. I and my savior, I'm happy and blessed, watching and waiting, looking above, filled with his goodness, lost in his love. This is my story. This is my song, praising my savior all the day long.
This is my story. This is my song, praising my savior all the day long. Amen.
Speaker 1How about this is Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus. We've been singing this for years, just the chorus because that's what it what is in our hymn book. But y'all sing off the wall anyway, right? We we're gonna pull the verses from a different hymn book and here they are. So, most of you will know it anyway.
What a very true song this is.
Speaker 2Oh, soul are you weary and troubled. No light in the darkness you see. There's light for a look at the savior and life more abundant and free. Turn your eyes on Jesus. Look full in his wonderful face.
And the things of earth will grow strangely dim in the light of his glory and grace. Through death into life everlasting, he passed and we follow him there. Or since in no more hath dominion, for more than conquerors we are. Turn your eyes upon Jesus. Look full in his wonderful face.
And the things of earth will grow strangely dim in the light of his glory and grace. Unless his word shall not fail you, he promised. Believe him and all will be well. Then go to a world that is dying, his perfect salvation to tell. Turn your eyes upon Jesus.
Look full in his wonderful face, and the things of earth will grow strangely dim in the light of his glory and grace. I
Speaker 1think we're gonna skip that part. Have you all ever seen that part? Okay. Good. Y'all can have a seat.
Announcements are just a few of them. Awana is tomorrow night. It's a regular club night at Awana. Tomorrow night, they'll start off right here in this room and have a little ceremony for beginning and spread out all over the church, learning scripture, hearing counsel, and it's a good time. So the kids club tomorrow starting 05:45.
There is a supper for volunteers and their kids at 05:15. Naomi is taking care of that I think tomorrow night. Iwana tomorrow. We still need always volunteers for connect hour to set up. Addie Hare did it herself this morning.
It was wonderful, very very good. But if you'd like to help out, you can call Addie at that number and she will tell you kind of how it goes. You don't have to pay for the food. We pay for the food, but if you'll just set it up, that helps tremendously. Either that or the Awana meal, both of those are available for helpers.
There is a study on Thursdays at lunchtime. So basically noon to one by 11:55 to give a little, start up. 11:55, hard stop at one. You can come and go as needed, but that is a good time of studying God's word together as men. So I I highly recommend it.
I've missed the last two for circumstances. Been a been a couple of weeks of ministry around here, and I think that's the last one. Nick had one more in the first service. There is some left there's some leftover sandwiches. We had a huge funeral here yesterday.
Many of y'all will know Kelly Krauss, owner operator of the Virginian passed two Fridays back. And we had the wart who does not normally cater, catered sandwiches yesterday and they brought enough for an army. So there are still some sandwiches down the hall. If you'd like some of them, you're welcome to carry those with you. Seems like that was it.
Anybody else have one that I'm forgetting? Okay. Connor, you got an announcement? It was his birthday last week, March 4. Fantastic.
I know that. That was the one. Would you stand? Give Connor a round of applause.
Speaker 2That's good. It's good.
Speaker 1Thank you. We'd rather have Jesus. Hymn number five zero six. Here it is.
Speaker 2I'd rather have Jesus than silver or gold. I'd rather be his than have riches untold. I'd rather have Jesus than houses or lands. I'd rather be led by his nail pierced hand than to be the king of a vast domain and be held in sin dreads way. I'd rather have Jesus than anything this world affords today.
I'd rather have Jesus than man's applause. I'd rather be faithful to his dear cause. I'd rather have Jesus than worldwide fame. I'd rather be true to his holy name than to be the key of a vast domain and be held in sins dread sway. I'd rather have Jesus than anything this world affords today on the last.
He's fairer than the king of a vast domain and be held in sin's dread sway. I'd rather have Jesus than anything this world affords today.
Speaker 1And next, we're gonna sing through His Name is Wonderful. We're gonna sing the whole thing twice. Alright? It's short. So we're gonna sing it a couple times.
Speaker 2His name is wonderful. His name is wonderful. Jesus, my Lord. He is the mighty king, master of everything. His name is wonderful.
Jesus, my lord. The He's the great shepherd, the rock of all ages. Almighty God is he. Bow down before him. Love and adore him.
His name is wonderful. Jesus, my lord. His name is wonderful. His name is wonderful. His name is wonderful.
Jesus, my lord. He is the mighty king, master of everything. His name is wonderful. Jesus, my lord. He's the great shepherd, the rock of all ages.
Almighty God is he.
Speaker 1Amen. Y'all can have a seat. I'm gonna invite the ushers to come forward. Would you pray with me? Actually, would you all just pray with me the Lord's prayer?
Carl did this this morning in the first service and I think it's appropriate. We don't do it every week, all the time, but would you join me? Would somebody start me for crying out loud? I just forgot the Lord's prayer in front of all these people. Our father, we go.
That's why Carl writes things down. Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil for thine is kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever.
Amen. Amen. The last time I did that, I forgot the words of the doxology. Glenn is coming up to he Glenn Owings. Owings, not Owens, o w I n g s.
Owings. Glenn Owings is coming up. He's an elder, and he's gonna give a bit of his testimony this morning.
Speaker 3Alrighty. Great. Well, you guys heard from from Berkeley last week, and I think you'll hear from mister Gibson next week. So, today's my day. It's nice to visit with you briefly this morning.
And so, just by way of introduction, most of you I know, but my name is Glenn Owings. My wife is Liz. We have four kids, Logan, Caleb, Timber, and Cely. And we've been attending First Bee since about 2015. And, as I thought through kind of what I might share this morning, I think the first thing that stuck out was just how blessed I was to have folks who really assured me what it meant to believe in Jesus and to have a strong faith.
And then, I thought also of just some kind of key moments and key role models that I had in my life at important moments that help point me toward Christ. So, I'll just highlight highlight a few of those. And the first I thought of was just my dad and my granddad, who were strong believers. My granddad was the first first in our family and his family to to really hold on to Jesus and and come to faith. Had some pretty miraculous experiences as a young person and some pretty tough circumstances.
But but God really brought him through that and kind of started a legacy of just truth and faith in our family. He and my dad were so rooted in scripture and until the day he died, my granddad was so just faithful to share about Jesus with anybody he would come in contact with. He was a mechanic, a heavy equipment mechanic, and a logger for his whole life. And there was never a time when the first thing on his mind was how he was gonna work into that conversation, just sharing his story and his testimony. And then as I kind of grew into my high school years, I had some great mentors.
I went to a great school and had some teachers and mentors that really showed me what it was like to live out their faith. And that was really important to me. I was able to go on some short term missions trips that were really meaningful. And so, were some important moments in my life as well. And then, as a young adult, kind of between high school and college, I went on to a mountaineering school for thirty days.
And that really was a time where I kind of was in this new environment with brand new people, and it was really like, who was I gonna decide who I was, you know. I remember, and I've It was like really uncomfortable, but kind of like this. Here, you know, essentially So each person in this group was given the floor. Okay. Here you got, I forget what it was, ten minutes.
You're not allowed to stop talking until your ten minutes is up. And you will talk about yourself, whether you want to or not. And it's a great way to, well, a very functional way to force kids to get to know each other. But anyway, so here I am, and I get to explain who I am to these people. And you know, it really was a kind of a inflection point of who am I?
You know, that I could tell them whatever. You know, is this my faith? Is this really what I believe? Or is this just kind of, you know, what I've grown up with? So, that wasn't, you know, a moment of coming to faith, but really a time I remember where, you know, this was decision time.
Is this mine or not? So, that was a really important moment, as well. And then Liz and I, we got married young. We had kids young. We've really grown in our faith a lot together.
And we've tried to always make a priority of our relationship and our family of just doing what God is asking us to do. Whether or not that, you know, makes sense in human terms or not. You know, we really try to prioritize that. So, that's what we continue to work on and try to strive for with our family and with our relationship with God. And so, we've grown a lot and we continue to move that direction and something we continue to work on.
So, you know, I think some I like Berkeley, I asked Liz, okay, what are some strengths that I had, you know? And so, I don't like talking about myself. So, the things she came up with are discernment, and leadership, and service. And I do do love to serve, and serve the church, or outside the church, and those things are meaningful to me. So, that's it.
Thank you. Oh, two more. Okay. I'm mediocre at cards. Don't
Speaker 1Great. Thank you. And he said he doesn't really like to stand up front, but he is always always at work behind the scenes serving others. That's great. So this this we're back to a study.
We have been doing a relational series for a while. And last week, I did two full chapters of Matthew. Two full chapters, twenty four and twenty five. Probably the hardest two chapters of Matthew to interpret. We did in one sermon last week.
We're up to going back to the harmony of gospel study. Matthew, Mark, and Luke mostly but I'm gonna also mention John some this morning. He fills in some gaps for us in this one but the surely not I, lord, is just put it as a name. If we are to betray our faith, may it be a surprise to us. Does that make sense?
We do falter. We do fail. We do make mistakes and we do betray our lord from time to time. He offers forgiveness. He brings us back into the fold but may it be an accidental, may it be a mistake, surely not I.
I would not intend that because we're gonna see a couple of different groups today that have gone ahead of that. Surely not I. Let let's start right here. So we're in Matthew 26, Mark 14, and Luke 21 today. And before we get into the scripture, the scripture is gonna speak.
Usually, I go through the slides. Last thing I do on Saturdays go through and kinda verse by verse it, you know, black things out, great things, put highlight. I haven't done any of that this week. The Kelly's family, Lynette and Kevin and Danielle and Casey took priority this week, most of the week. And on Wednesday evening, 11:15 in the evening, there was a wreck in the canyon and it was Ben Upton, he's fine.
But Ben Upton was involved in a very, very bad car wreck and the cab of the truck was knocked off the chassis of the truck and he was in it upside down in the middle of the canyon hit not exactly head on but really close to head on with a semi. And so Wednesday night to Thursday morning, all the way around the clock until the next day was spent with Sarah and with the family and getting from one hospital to the other. He is fine. He's recovering with a broken femur and a broken ankle and a few contusions here and there, a couple of lacerations that have been stitched up and he is gonna be fine. But I apologize for not highlighting the stuff this morning.
That is my defense. When Jesus had finished all these words, these are the two chapters of the all that discourse that I covered last week in Matthew. This is what it's talking about. When he had finished all these words on Tuesday night of Holy Week. When he finished all these words, he said to his disciples, you know that after two days of Passover is coming and the son of man is to be handed over for crucifixion.
He said it plainly. He's handed I'm gonna be handed over for crucifixion. They still didn't get it. At that time, the chief priest and the elders of the people were gathered together in the courtyard of the high priest named Caiaphas. Now, two days from now, three days from now, we're gonna see what taking place there.
That's the same place where there's a little fire that the people are warming by. It's the same place where they're conspiring and there's gonna be a kangaroo court. At that time, the chief priest and elders of people were gathered together in the courtyard of the high priest named Caiaphas. They plotted together to arrest Jesus covertly and kill him. That was their intent.
They set out. They had it in mind. There was no doubt about what they were gonna do but they were saying, it's not gonna be during the festival. We don't wanna do it now. This is a big time of year.
This is our time. We don't wanna do it because there might be a riot among the people. Jesus has gained a lot of popularity. That's the whole reason they were against him. He's threatening their political power and so we're not gonna do it during the festival.
Rome is over us. We get in big trouble whenever there's a riot. We're not gonna do this right now. We know Jesus has a lot of followers. We we know that that he has a lot of people that believe in him.
Let's see what Mark has to say. Now, the Passover and the festival of unleavened bread were two days away and the chief priest and the scribes were seeking how to arrest Jesus covertly and kill him. That was their intent. They've made up their mind already. They were saying not during the festival though, otherwise, there'll be a riot of the people and we don't want a riot of the people.
We want to do this secretly. Luke gives us a little more information. Now during the day, was teaching in the temple but at evening, he would go out, spend the night on the mountain that's called Olivet. That's what he was doing. Mornings in the temple, evenings up on the mountain overlooking the temple.
And all the people would get up very early in the morning to come to him and to to the temple to listen to him. Now, the feast of unleavened bread which is called the Passover was approaching and the chief priest and the scribes. They were the ones that were in power, mostly Sadducees, mostly Sadducees. They're in the Sanhedrin and they were the ones that had a measure of political power over their people but underneath Roman rule. The chief priest and the scribes were trying to find a way to put Jesus to death since they were afraid of the people.
So that is the kind of the setting for what's going on. And next, we see in Matthew, one of the 12 named Judas Iscariot. He went to the chief priest. It's kind of an open secret what's going on. Right?
We know who the players are. Pharisees are against the sadducees. That's just right and left. We know that's the case. That's always been.
It always will be. But then when Jesus comes into the mix, they're both kind of against him and we start seeing them get together because they're both against him because he's threatening both of them. We one of the 12 though, Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priest and he said, what are you willing to give me? Now, this makes it look like his motive is money. What are you willing to give me to betray him to you?
And they set out for him 30 pieces of silver. And from then on, he looked for a good opportunity to betray Jesus. If you think about the time frame from when this was, the church traditionally has called Wednesday of Holy Week spy Wednesday because one from within Jesus's camp went to the other oppressed the other side and made a deal to betray. So Spy Wednesday. Mark says, then Judas Iscariot, who was one of the 12, went off to the chief priest in order to betray Jesus to them and they were delighted when they heard this.
So, they had already made up their minds about opposition to Jesus and what they wanted to do, arrest and kill. That's what they wanted. They wanted an end to Jesus. No more worries from that guy. And when Judas, who is one of their camp, came to them, they're looking for a way that might be kind of quiet that they wouldn't cause a riot and now Judas has come.
And and they were delighted it says, when they heard this and they promised to give him money. This one plays down that he's asking for money. This one says, no, no, no. Yeah, you get this. For that, absolutely, we're willing to pay for this.
And he began from that point seeking how to betray him at an opportune time. Luke, again, a little more information. And Satan entered Judas, the one called Iscariot who belonged to the number of the 12. There's a temptation from the evil one. Right?
There is temptation out there. We have an adversary. He's seeking someone to devour. Judas went. He belongs to number 12.
He left and he discussed with the chief priest and the officers how he was to betray him to them and they were delighted and they agreed to give him money, and so he consented. So now, it's not only the chief priests and scribes and this says guards that were assenting to arrest and kill Jesus but now there's one more and it's one from the camp and so he consented. It was his will that he be turned over, and he began looking for a good opportunity to betray him to them away from the crowd. He wanted it to be not a riot. The best way that you can possibly look at Judas' motives is that he thought this would bring about God's will on earth.
That the Romans get kicked out, that Jesus establishes his rule, earthly rule. Now, Jesus has told him over and over that that's not the way this works. He's told them recently that he would be crucified. Here we go forward. Now on the first day of the unleavened bread, the disciples came to Jesus and said, where do you want us to prepare?
That's all we have for Wednesday, by the way. Right right here, this is the end of Wednesday, Spy Wednesday. We're on the Thursday morning now. Okay? So of holy week, we started here last little bit of Tuesday, all of Wednesday.
It was just about Judas making the deal. So now, it's not just chief priest scribes guards but there's one of his own number who has determined in his heart to betray his master. Now, on the first day of unleavened bread, the disciples came to Jesus and asked, where do you want us to prepare for you to eat the Passover? And he said, go into the city to a certain man and say to him, the teacher says, my time is near. I'm keeping the Passover at your house with my disciples.
This is a little bit vague, isn't it? It's a little bit vague. There's a certain man. Doesn't say who he is or what he'll be doing and and it says, disciples, just disciples, plural. And he said, go into the city to a certain man and say to him, the teacher says, my time is near.
I'm keeping the Passover at your house with my disciples. That sounds like he's inviting himself to supper, doesn't it? The disciples did just as Jesus had directed them and they prepared the Passover there. Now, when evening came, Jesus was reclining at the table with the 12. This is Matthew's version.
Mark's version says this, on the first day of unleavened bread, same time period. When the Passover lamb was being sacrificed and that's significant. His disciples said to him, where do you want us to go and prepare for you to eat the Passover? And he sends two, like when you see the asterisk in the New American Standard Version, it is a historical present. It's a it's a storytelling device to get you into the story.
So his disciples say to him, where do you want us to go and prepare for you to eat the Passover? And he sends two of his disciples and says to them, go into the city and a man carrying a pitcher of water. That's more specific. We'll meet you and follow him and wherever he enters, say to the owner of the house, the teacher says, where is my guest room in which I may eat the Passover with my disciples? And he himself will show you a large upper room furnished and ready, Prepare the meal for us there.
So it says there are two disciples this time. It's not just disciples plural but two, and he himself will show you a large upstairs room furnished and ready. Prepare for us there. The disciples left. They came to the city obediently, should say.
They did exactly like he said and what happened? They found everything just as he had told them and they prepared the Passover like he had commanded. They were being obedient. When it was even in, he came together there with the 12. If you look at Mark, he just says it's a couple of the disciples.
Well, let's
Speaker 2look at Luke. Luke gives a
Speaker 1little more information that's pretty characteristic. Now the first day of unleavened bread came on which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed and so Jesus sent Peter and John. That's very specific. It's not Judas. Judas is looking for a time when he's going to betray him.
All the cloak and dagger that we've seen so far, go into the town. Look for a guy. He's gonna be carrying a picture. Right? The code word is, it's like that sort of thing.
Jesus had set up in advance. There's a little lesson here. When Jesus gives you a command that he wants for you to obey, he has gone before you. Does that make sense? He set things up ahead of time before Peter and John go into town.
He's already talked to the owner of the house. He's already talked to the man with the picture. He's already got this set up but they are going in. Go and prepare. Jesus sent Peter and John saying, go and prepare the Passover for us so that we may eat it there together.
They said to him, where do you want us to prepare it? And he said, when you enter the city, there's gonna be a man carrying a pitcher of water and he'll meet you. Follow him into the house that he enters. You don't have to say anything on the street. Judas and the spies can be looking at all of this.
So when you see the guy with the picture, follow him. When he goes inside, you would go inside. And you say to the owner of the house, the teacher says to you, where's the guest room in which I may eat the Passover with my disciples? And he'll show you a large, furnished upstairs room, it's a good spot, prepare it there. And they left and they found everything just as he had told them.
They're being obedient. They saw it just like he said and they prepared the Passover. And Luke goes on here and says, now when the hour came, gets to be supper time, he reclined at the table and all of the apostles were with him And he said to them, I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. For I say to you, I'm not gonna eat it again until it's fulfilled in the kingdom of God. I won't be with you here next year.
He's told him he's gonna be crucified. He's told them he's not gonna be with him. He's said this on multiple occasions. The best we can think is that Judas wanted the revolution to begin in an earthly way And so he's prompting that, forcing Jesus's hand because he thinks he knows better. How?
When's it gonna happen? When's it gonna happen? When are you gonna set up your kingdom? When are you gonna do this? When are you gonna do this?
And he's like, my hour's not yet come. My hour's not yet come. Now, he's saying right here, when the hour came. Okay? And let's go to John.
In the book of John, we've heard up to this point, my hour has not yet come. My hour has not yet come. The time has not yet come. My time is not yet. Now the feast of the Passover, Jesus knowing that his hour had come.
This is the time. This is the place that he would be departing from this world to the father and having loved his own who were in the world. He loved them to the very end and during supper, the devil, having already put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, he'd already fed him the bait. He'd already put it out there, given him plenty of ways to justify. During supper, the devil having already put into the heart of Jesus Iscariot, the son of Simon to betray him, Jesus, knowing that the father had handed over all things over to him.
He has all authority on in heaven and in earth. He can do anything. Jesus knowing that the father had handed over all things to him and that he had come forth from God, that he was going back to God. He gets up from supper and he lays his outer garments aside and he took a towel and he tied it around himself. All authority is given to him in heaven on earth.
If you had all the power in the world and you knew you had one day left, what would you do with it? If you get a terminal diagnosis and you know you got six months left, what would you do with it? He has one day. He knows he's gonna be crucified. He's walking towards that cross.
Jesus washes the disciples' feet. That's what he did with his day, with his evening. You can read that for yourself. John thirteen five through 20. I've got an assignment for you at the end of the sermon.
If I forget, Carl's gonna remind me. Had to remind me how to start the Lord's prayer. Goodness. This is what the last part we're gonna cover today is right here and you can see that the synoptics give us a little and it's weird because Luke is not the longest one this time. But John gives us some more ample understanding of what's going on.
But the synoptics are the one that hit the surely not eye. Let's go there. And as they were eating, so they've he's already washed their feet. And as they were eating, he said, truly I say to you that one of y'all will betray me. And being deeply grieved, they began saying to him, each one of them, surely surely it's not I Lord.
I don't I don't want it to be me. And he answered, he who dipped his hand with me in the bowl is the one who will betray me. They're eating and they're dipping their hands in the bowl. He who dipped his hand with me in the bowl is the one who will betray me. The son of man is going away.
Just as it's written about him, but woe to that man by whom the son of man is betrayed. Now Judas, like we said, he's already made the deal, Wednesday. This is Thursday. It would have been better for him that he had not been born and Judas who was betraying him said, surely it's not I, Rabbi. Oh, he said the exact same thing as the other 11.
He knew it was him. And Jesus said to him, you said it yourself. Not only did you do the betrayal or start the betrayal, but now you're lying about it just to look good in front of everybody else. And as they recline, this is Mark, as they recline at the table and eating, Jesus said, truly I say to you that one of you will betray me. One of you who is eating with me right now, table fellowship is so important in the New Testament.
For Jews and Gentiles to eat together is huge for Paul, know, for Peter after the resurrection, after the church is growing, but right now to be called into this place, who you eat the Passover with is a really really big deal and he is prepared right there. As they were reclining at the table and eating, Jesus said, truly I say to you, one of you will betray me. One who is eating with me and they began all to be grieved and to say to him one by one, surely not I. Surely, it's not me. Lord, may it never be.
I don't wanna do anything. I don't wanna do anything. Lord, Lord is important in there, right? Kind of interesting in Matthew that everybody said, surely not I, Lord, except for Judas and he said, surely not I, Rabbi. They they began to be grieved and they said to him, surely not I, but he said to them, it is one of the twelve, one who dips bread with me in the bowl, which they've been doing now for three years.
But woe to that man by whom the son of man is betrayed, it would have been good for that man if he had not been born. Luke, what does Luke say? But behold, the hand of the one betraying me is with mine on the table. For indeed the son of man is going as it has been determined. He is determined.
In Luke from nine fifty one forward, he has set his face like flint towards Jerusalem. He is walking with purpose toward the cross, but this is how it's gonna come about. Just as it has been determined, but woe to that man by whom it he is betrayed and they began to debate among themselves which one of them it was who was gonna do this. Can you imagine him sitting around looking going, surely not I, maybe it's Peter. He's he does stupid stuff all the time.
Maybe it's Judas. I think he'd steals from the money back. John says that he stole from the money back, you know. Maybe it's Judas. I don't know who it is.
Surely not I, Lord. I hope that they were examining themselves. That time of Passover, looking back at the way God had delivered and considering that a lot of those folks died in the wilderness because they were stiff necked and they dis disobedient. Right? It's a time for pondering heavy stuff.
They began to debate among themselves which one of them it was who was gonna do this. It's funny. We'll get back to what goes the next part of what they begin to debate in a minute. That's Luke. Let's go to John.
And John says, when Jesus had said these things, he became very troubled in spirit and he testified and he said, truly, truly, I say to you that one of you will betray me. And the disciples began looking at one another at a loss to know of which one he was speaking. And
Speaker 2all the all the
Speaker 1rest of Synoptics say they're wondering if it's themselves. Surely, not I I hope it's not me. I really don't wanna do that. Lying back on Jesus' chest was one of his disciples and whom Jesus loved. Now, in the painting Leonardo's famous last supper painting, you know, they're sitting at a table, they're not reclining on the floor, but they're sitting at a table and you see John is leaned back on Jesus.
That's where we get that. Lying back on Jesus' chest was one of his disciples whom Jesus loved, John. So Simon Peter nodded to this disciple. Can you see it right now? He's like, John.
You're sitting right next to him. Ask him who it is. So Simon Peter nods to this disciple and says to him, tell us who it is. I'm whom you're speaking. Ask him.
He then simply leaned back on Jesus' chest and said, Lord, who is it? Tell me. And Jesus then answered and said, that man is the one for whom I shall dip a piece of bread and give it to him. So when he had dipped the piece of bread, he took it and he gave it to Judas and the son of Simon Iscariot and after this, Satan then entered him. Now it already says in Luke that Satan had tempted him.
It's already says that Satan had had something to do with this. We do have an enemy. He is very active. He's looking for points of pride. He's looking for entry ways.
He's looking for roots of bitterness. He's looking for an opportunity all the time. After this, it says Satan entered into him and Jesus said to him, what you're doing? Do it quickly. Go now.
Now, none of those who are reclining at the table knew for what purpose he has said this to Judas. They're used to hanging out with Jesus. They're used to eating with Jesus. They're used to Jesus giving commands. Peter and John just had to do something.
He might tell, would you go and do this? So, whatever you're doing, Judas, go do it quickly. Go go ahead. Now, none of them knew why he was saying that. For some were assuming since Judas kept the money box that Jesus was saying to him, go buy the things we need for the rest of the feast.
It would be a weird time to do that at Passover meal. Right? You go during Passover and go do something. By the things that we need for the feast or else that he was give to give something to the poor. Okay.
That might make sense. We do give to the poor. That's part of what we do. So maybe he was sending them to do that. But after receiving that piece of bread, he left immediately and it was night.
Let's skip back over Luke for a minute. So the last thing they said they were debating on who it might be that betrays Jesus. And then listen to this next and the dispute also developed among them as to which one of them was regarded as being the greatest. That's funny, Connor. I agree with you.
Can you believe that Jesus has just washed their feet? He's been given all the authority in heaven and in earth and he washed his feet. And a dispute arises among them as to which one of them was regarded as the greatest. What prompted that? Is which one of us is gonna betray him?
And all of a sudden, they're wondering, well, who's the best? And he said to them, the kings of the Gentiles, Jesus said to his disciples that were left, 11 of them. The kings of the Gentiles domineer and rule over them and those who have authority over them are called benefactors. They call themselves benefactors. Right?
They're oppressing the people and they call themselves benefactors. By my grace, they live. But it's not this way for you, rather. The one who is greatest among you, 11, the one who's greatest among you followers of Jesus must become like the youngest. They must become like the youngest and the leader must be like a servant.
For who is greater? The one who reclines at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who reclines at the table? That's right. Yeah.
It is, but I am among you as the one who serves. I'm giving you an example. And that's what we're looking for. Y'all are the ones who have stood by me in my trials. Literally, they're gonna stand by him in his trials that are coming in the next day.
Y'all are the ones who have stood by me in my trials and just as my father has granted me a kingdom, I grant that to you so that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom forevermore and you'll sit on thrones judging the 12 tribes of Israel. My assignment, not what I said, the assignment that I'm asking you of you all is considering that and considering that Judas had made up his mind and knew it and was trying to cover it. And then the rest of the guys were going, surely it's not I, Lord. I pray that all of us are in that camp where we're surely it's not I. Lord, if you'll show me any way that I'm betraying you, I will renounce that.
I will put that down. Don't allow the devil to convince you of anything that is betraying Christ. I pray that it would be an you would fall into it, not make your decision and go after it. Does that make sense? For for worldwide fame, when we sang, I'd rather have Jesus, I thought, than houses or lands and worldwide fame.
I'd rather have Jesus than be the king of a vast domain, but also be held in sin's dreads way. Right? Yeah. May it never be. Surely, not I, Lord.
Should surely, it's not I. I don't think that there's anything in my life right now that's betraying you, Lord. But please please call it to my attention so I can get it gone, so I can get rid of it. I think that's a good place as the fourth step of the 12 says for a fearless and searching moral inventory. Where you look and say, is there anything where I am decidedly going against God's will for me?
Am I looking to be served rather than to serve? Am I looking for my own? Am I am I looking out for number one rather than looking out for Jesus? Am I willing? Now, I will remind you that the 11 that were left all died martyrs death.
They all carried forward with this for the rest of their lives proclaiming Jesus' resurrection. We'll get to that later. So next week, I'm gonna go to Good Friday. We're at Thursday right now, Thursday night in the upper room. What I'm gonna ask of you as the assignment is this, read the upper room discourse.
It's in John. It's John thirteen, fourteen, fifteen and sixteen. Four whole chapters are in that upper room and it's all good and it will bless you, I promise to read it. John thirteen, fourteen, fifteen, and sixteen and then when they leave out of the upper room and Jesus goes into the garden to pray is John 17. I'm asking you to read five chapters of John because that's better than me preaching it in fifteen minutes.
Right? Okay. Five chapters of John and it will bless you, I promise. But what we're gonna do next week when we get back together is talk about Good Friday. I have done the Palm Sunday message over and over and over and over again since I've been here.
I'm trying to get to Good Friday rather than the triumphal entry. We've done that recently already. Would you stand with me? And Judy, thank you. We're gonna sing I surrender all.
We're gonna sing all of them actually. All the verses that come up, we're gonna sing.
Speaker 2All to Jesus, I surrender all to him I freely give. I will ever love and trust him in his presence daily live. I surrender all. I surrender all. All to thee, my blessed savior, I surrender all.
All to Jesus, I surrender humbly at his feet I bow. Worldly pleasures all forsaken, take me. Jesus, take me now. I surrender all. All to Jesus, I surrender to give myself to thee.
Fill me with thy love and power. Let thy blessing fall on me. I surrender all. I surrender
Speaker 1all. Amen. Now, we know that there's not a single one of us in the room that has not betrayed our faith at some point. There's there's not a one of us in the room but may we renounce that instead of holding on to it, instead of holding on to what we think might be best, the best we can think is Judas was trying to help Jesus when Jesus was reluctant. He was trying to help him set up his kingdom.
That's the best we can think but that is Judas' political understanding, not God's will. May we renounce anything that is not the will of God for our life and the power to carry it out. In Jesus name, Lord, we pray a blessing that you would transfer to us the peace that passes all understanding and allow us the grace and the mercy to be able to give that away to people who are at war and struggling with you. Lord, would you bless, would you make your face to shine upon these people who are gathered in your name. Amen.
