  • Romans 1 recap: the gospel is the power of God for salvation, men are without excuse, men exchanged the truth for a lie

    1 Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, set apart for the Good News of God,

    2 which he promised before through his prophets in the holy Scriptures,

    3 concerning his Son, who was born of the offspring of David according to the flesh,

    4 who was declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the Spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord,

    5 through whom we received grace and apostleship, for obedience of faith among all the nations, for his name’s sake;

    6 among whom you are also called to belong to Jesus Christ;

    7 to all who are in Rome, beloved of God, called to be saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

    8 First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for all of you, that your faith is proclaimed throughout the whole world.

    9 For God is my witness, whom I serve in my spirit in the Good News of his Son, how unceasingly I make mention of you always in my prayers,

    10 requesting, if by any means now at last I may be prospered by the will of God to come to you.

    11 For I long to see you, that I may impart to you some spiritual gift, to the end that you may be established;

    12 that is, that I with you may be encouraged in you, each of us by the other’s faith, both yours and mine.

    13 Now I don’t desire to have you unaware, brothers, that I often planned to come to you, and was hindered so far, that I might have some fruit among you also, even as among the rest of the Gentiles.

    14 I am debtor both to Greeks and to foreigners, both to the wise and to the foolish.

    15 So, as much as is in me, I am eager to preach the Good News to you also who are in Rome.

    16 For I am not ashamed of the Good News of Christ, because it is the power of God for salvation for everyone who believes; for the Jew first, and also for the Greek.

    17 For in it is revealed God’s righteousness from faith to faith. As it is written, “But the righteous shall live by faith.”

    18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness,

    19 because that which is known of God is revealed in them, for God revealed it to them.

    20 For the invisible things of him since the creation of the world are clearly seen, being perceived through the things that are made, even his everlasting power and divinity; that they may be without excuse.

    21 Because, knowing God, they didn’t glorify him as God, neither gave thanks, but became vain in their reasoning, and their senseless heart was darkened.

    22 Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,

    23 and traded the glory of the incorruptible God for the likeness of an image of corruptible man, and of birds, and four-footed animals, and creeping things.

    24 Therefore God also gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to uncleanness, that their bodies should be dishonored among themselves;

    25 who exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen.

    26 For this reason, God gave them up to vile passions. For their women changed the natural function into that which is against nature.

    27 Likewise also the men, leaving the natural function of the woman, burned in their lust toward one another, men doing what is inappropriate with men, and receiving in themselves the due penalty of their error.

    28 Even as they refused to have God in their knowledge, God gave them up to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not fitting;

    29 being filled with all unrighteousness, sexual immorality, wickedness, covetousness, malice; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, evil habits, secret slanderers,

    30 backbiters, hateful to God, insolent, haughty, boastful, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents,

    31 without understanding, covenant breakers, without natural affection, unforgiving, unmerciful;

    32 who, knowing the ordinance of God, that those who practice such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but also approve of those who practice them.

Romans 2

recap: no partiality with God, Jews with stubborn hearts will also experience wrath

1 Therefore you are without excuse, O man, whoever you are who judge. For in that which you judge another, you condemn yourself. For you who judge practice the same things.

2 We know that the judgment of God is according to truth against those who practice such things.

3 Do you think this, O man who judges those who practice such things, and do the same, that you will escape the judgment of God?

4 Or do you despise the riches of his goodness, forbearance, and patience, not knowing that the goodness of God leads you to repentance?

5 But according to your hardness and unrepentant heart you are treasuring up for yourself wrath in the day of wrath, revelation, and of the righteous judgment of God;

6 who “will pay back to everyone according to their works:”

7 to those who by perseverance in well-doing seek for glory, honor, and incorruptibility, eternal life;

8 but to those who are self-seeking, and don’t obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, will be wrath and indignation,

9 oppression and anguish, on every soul of man who does evil, to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.

10 But glory, honor, and peace go to every man who does good, to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.

11 For there is no partiality with God.

12 For as many as have sinned without the law will also perish without the law. As many as have sinned under the law will be judged by the law.

13 For it isn’t the hearers of the law who are righteous before God, but the doers of the law will be justified

14 (for when Gentiles who don’t have the law do by nature the things of the law, these, not having the law, are a law to themselves,

15 in that they show the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience testifying with them, and their thoughts among themselves accusing or else excusing them)

16 in the day when God will judge the secrets of men, according to my Good News, by Jesus Christ.

17 Indeed you bear the name of a Jew, and rest on the law, and glory in God,

18 and know his will, and approve the things that are excellent, being instructed out of the law,

19 and are confident that you yourself are a guide of the blind, a light to those who are in darkness,

20 a corrector of the foolish, a teacher of babies, having in the law the form of knowledge and of the truth.

21 You therefore who teach another, don’t you teach yourself? You who preach that a man shouldn’t steal, do you steal?

22 You who say a man shouldn’t commit adultery. Do you commit adultery? You who abhor idols, do you rob temples?

23 You who glory in the law, do you dishonor God by disobeying the law?

24 For “the name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you,” just as it is written.

25 For circumcision indeed profits, if you are a doer of the law, but if you are a transgressor of the law, your circumcision has become uncircumcision.

26 If therefore the uncircumcised keep the ordinances of the law, won’t his uncircumcision be accounted as circumcision?

27 Won’t the uncircumcision which is by nature, if it fulfills the law, judge you, who with the letter and circumcision are a transgressor of the law?

28 For he is not a Jew who is one outwardly, neither is that circumcision which is outward in the flesh;

29 but he is a Jew who is one inwardly, and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit not in the letter; whose praise is not from men, but from God.

recap: by works of the law no flesh will be justified, the law shows us our sin

1 Then what advantage does the Jew have? Or what is the profit of circumcision?

2 Much in every way! Because first of all, they were entrusted with the revelations of God.

3 For what if some were without faith? Will their lack of faith nullify the faithfulness of God?

4 May it never be! Yes, let God be found true, but every man a liar. As it is written, “That you might be justified in your words, and might prevail when you come into judgment.”

5 But if our unrighteousness commends the righteousness of God, what will we say? Is God unrighteous who inflicts wrath? I speak like men do.

6 May it never be! For then how will God judge the world?

7 For if the truth of God through my lie abounded to his glory, why am I also still judged as a sinner?

8 Why not (as we are slanderously reported, and as some affirm that we say), “Let us do evil, that good may come?” Those who say so are justly condemned.

9 What then? Are we better than they? No, in no way. For we previously warned both Jews and Greeks, that they are all under sin.

10 As it is written, “There is no one righteous; no, not one.

11 There is no one who understands. There is no one who seeks after God.

12 They have all turned away. They have together become unprofitable. There is no one who does good, no, not so much as one.”

13 “Their throat is an open tomb. With their tongues they have used deceit.” “The poison of vipers is under their lips”;

14 “whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness.”

15 “Their feet are swift to shed blood.

16 Destruction and misery are in their ways.

17 The way of peace, they haven’t known.”

18 “There is no fear of God before their eyes.”

19 Now we know that whatever things the law says, it speaks to those who are under the law, that every mouth may be closed, and all the world may be brought under the judgment of God.

20 Because by the works of the law, no flesh will be justified in his sight. For through the law comes the knowledge of sin.

21 But now apart from the law, a righteousness of God has been revealed, being testified by the law and the prophets;

22 even the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ to all and on all those who believe. For there is no distinction,

23 for all have sinned, and fall short of the glory of God;

24 being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus;

25 whom God sent to be an atoning sacrifice, through faith in his blood, for a demonstration of his righteousness through the passing over of prior sins, in God’s forbearance;

26 to demonstrate his righteousness at this present time; that he might himself be just, and the justifier of him who has faith in Jesus.

27 Where then is the boasting? It is excluded. By what kind of law? Of works? No, but by a law of faith.

28 We maintain therefore that a man is justified by faith apart from the works of the law.

29 Or is God the God of Jews only? Isn’t he the God of Gentiles also? Yes, of Gentiles also,

30 since indeed there is one God who will justify the circumcised by faith, and the uncircumcised through faith.

31 Do we then nullify the law through faith? May it never be! No, we establish the law.

4:1 What then will we say that Abraham, our forefather, has found according to the flesh?

4:2 For if Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about, but not toward God.

4:3 For what does the Scripture say? “Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.”

4:4 Now to him who works, the reward is not counted as grace, but as something owed.

4:5 But to him who doesn’t work, but believes in him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is accounted for righteousness.

4:6 Even as David also pronounces blessing on the man to whom God counts righteousness apart from works,

4:7 “Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven, whose sins are covered.

4:8 Blessed is the man whom the Lord will by no means charge with sin.”

4:9 Is this blessing then pronounced on the circumcised, or on the uncircumcised also? For we say that faith was accounted to Abraham for righteousness.

4:10 How then was it counted? When he was in circumcision, or in uncircumcision? Not in circumcision, but in uncircumcision.

4:11 He received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had while he was in uncircumcision, that he might be the father of all those who believe, though they might be in uncircumcision, that righteousness might also be accounted to them.

4:12 He is the father of circumcision to those who not only are of the circumcision, but who also walk in the steps of that faith of our father Abraham, which he had in uncircumcision.

4:13 For the promise to Abraham and to his offspring that he should be heir of the world wasn’t through the law, but through the righteousness of faith.

4:14 For if those who are of the law are heirs, faith is made void, and the promise is made of no effect.

4:15 For the law produces wrath, for where there is no law, neither is there disobedience.

4:16 For this cause it is of faith, that it may be according to grace, to the end that the promise may be sure to all the offspring, not to that only which is of the law, but to that also which is of the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all.

4:17 As it is written, “I have made you a father of many nations.” This is in the presence of him whom he believed: God, who gives life to the dead, and calls the things that are not, as though they were.

4:18 Besides hope, Abraham in hope believed, to the end that he might become a father of many nations, according to that which had been spoken, “So will your offspring be.”

4:19 Without being weakened in faith, he didn’t consider his own body, already having been worn out, (he being about a hundred years old), and the deadness of Sarah’s womb.

recap: always been by faith, through Abraham's example in the Old Testament

1 What then will we say that Abraham, our forefather, has found according to the flesh?

2 For if Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about, but not toward God.

3 For what does the Scripture say? “Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.”

4 Now to him who works, the reward is not counted as grace, but as something owed.

9 Is this blessing then pronounced on the circumcised, or on the uncircumcised also? For we say that faith was accounted to Abraham for righteousness.

10 How then was it counted? When he was in circumcision, or in uncircumcision? Not in circumcision, but in uncircumcision.

11 He received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had while he was in uncircumcision, that he might be the father of all those who believe, though they might be in uncircumcision, that righteousness might also be accounted to them.

19 Without being weakened in faith, he didn’t consider his own body, already having been worn out, (he being about a hundred years old), and the deadness of Sarah’s womb.

20 Yet, looking to the promise of God, he didn’t waver through unbelief, but grew strong through faith, giving glory to God,

21 and being fully assured that what he had promised, he was also able to perform.

22 Therefore it also was “credited to him for righteousness.”

23 Now it was not written that it was accounted to him for his sake alone,

24 but for our sake also, to whom it will be accounted, who believe in him who raised Jesus, our Lord, from the dead,

25 who was delivered up for our trespasses, and was raised for our justification.

Romans 5

recap: while we were still sinners Christ died for us, saved from wrath

1 Being therefore justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ;

2 through whom we also have our access by faith into this grace in which we stand. We rejoice in hope of the glory of God.

3 Not only this, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces perseverance;

4 and perseverance, proven character; and proven character, hope:

5 and hope doesn’t disappoint us, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.

6 For while we were yet weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly.

7 For one will hardly die for a righteous man. Yet perhaps for a righteous person someone would even dare to die.

8 But God commends his own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

9 Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we will be saved from God’s wrath through him.

10 For if, while we were enemies, we were reconciled to God through the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we will be saved by his life.

11 Not only so, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received the reconciliation.

12 Therefore as sin entered into the world through one man, and death through sin; and so death passed to all men, because all sinned.

13 For until the law, sin was in the world; but sin is not charged when there is no law.

14 Nevertheless death reigned from Adam until Moses, even over those whose sins weren’t like Adam’s disobedience, who is a foreshadowing of him who was to come.

15 But the free gift isn’t like the trespass. For if by the trespass of the one the many died, much more did the grace of God, and the gift by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, abound to the many.

16 The gift is not as through one who sinned: for the judgment came by one to condemnation, but the free gift came of many trespasses to justification.

17 For if by the trespass of the one, death reigned through the one; so much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one, Jesus Christ.

18 So then as through one trespass, all men were condemned; even so through one act of righteousness, all men were justified to life.

19 For as through the one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, even so through the obedience of the one, many will be made righteous.

20 The law came in besides, that the trespass might abound; but where sin abounded, grace abounded more exceedingly;

21 that as sin reigned in death, even so grace might reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Romans 6

recap: baptized into Christ's death, no longer slaves to sin

1 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound?

2 May it never be! We who died to sin, how could we live in it any longer?

3 Or don’t you know that all we who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death?

4 We were buried therefore with him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we also might walk in newness of life.

5 For if we have become united with him in the likeness of his death, we will also be part of his resurrection;

6 knowing this, that our old man was crucified with him, that the body of sin might be done away with, so that we would no longer be in bondage to sin.

7 For he who has died has been freed from sin.

8 But if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him;

9 knowing that Christ, being raised from the dead, dies no more. Death no more has dominion over him!

10 For the death that he died, he died to sin one time; but the life that he lives, he lives to God.

11 Thus consider yourselves also to be dead to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

12 Therefore don’t let sin reign in your mortal body, that you should obey it in its lusts.

13 Also, do not present your members to sin as instruments of unrighteousness, but present yourselves to God, as alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God.

14 For sin will not have dominion over you. For you are not under law, but under grace.

15 What then? Shall we sin, because we are not under law, but under grace? May it never be!

16 Don’t you know that when you present yourselves as servants and obey someone, you are the servants of whomever you obey; whether of sin to death, or of obedience to righteousness?

17 But thanks be to God, that, whereas you were bondservants of sin, you became obedient from the heart to that form of teaching to which you were delivered.

18 Being made free from sin, you became bondservants of righteousness.

19 I speak in human terms because of the weakness of your flesh, for as you presented your members as servants to uncleanness and to wickedness upon wickedness, even so now present your members as servants to righteousness for sanctification.

20 For when you were servants of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness.

21 What fruit then did you have at that time in the things of which you are now ashamed? For the end of those things is death.

22 But now, being made free from sin, and having become servants of God, you have your fruit of sanctification, and the result of eternal life.

23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Romans 7

recap: the law is good and holy but living by it in the flesh leads to failure

1 Or don’t you know, brothers (for I speak to men who know the law), that the law has dominion over a man for as long as he lives?

2 For the woman that has a husband is bound by law to the husband while he lives, but if the husband dies, she is discharged from the law of the husband.

3 So then if, while the husband lives, she is joined to another man, she would be called an adulteress. But if the husband dies, she is free from the law, so that she is no adulteress, though she is joined to another man.

4 Therefore, my brothers, you also were made dead to the law through the body of Christ, that you would be joined to another, to him who was raised from the dead, that we might produce fruit to God.

5 For when we were in the flesh, the sinful passions which were through the law, worked in our members to bring out fruit to death.

6 But now we have been discharged from the law, having died to that in which we were held; so that we serve in newness of the spirit, and not in oldness of the letter.

7 What shall we say then? Is the law sin? May it never be! However, I wouldn’t have known sin, except through the law. For I wouldn’t have known coveting, unless the law had said, “You shall not covet.”

8 But sin, finding occasion through the commandment, produced in me all kinds of coveting. For apart from the law, sin is dead.

9 I was alive apart from the law once, but when the commandment came, sin revived, and I died.

10 The commandment, which was for life, this I found to be for death;

11 for sin, finding occasion through the commandment, deceived me, and through it killed me.

12 Therefore the law indeed is holy, and the commandment holy, and righteous, and good.

13 Did then that which is good become death to me? May it never be! But sin, that it might be shown to be sin, was producing death in me through that which is good; that through the commandment sin might become exceedingly sinful.

14 For we know that the law is spiritual, but I am fleshly, sold under sin.

15 For I don’t know what I am doing. For I don’t practice what I desire to do; but what I hate, that I do.

16 But if what I don’t desire, that I do, I consent to the law that it is good.

17 So now it is no more I that do it, but sin which dwells in me.

18 For I know that in me, that is, in my flesh, dwells no good thing. For desire is present with me, but I don’t find it doing that which is good.

19 For the good which I desire, I don’t do; but the evil which I don’t desire, that I practice.

20 But if what I don’t desire, that I do, it is no more I that do it, but sin which dwells in me.

21 I find then the law, that, to me, while I desire to do good, evil is present.

22 For I delight in God’s law after the inward man,

23 but I see a different law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity under the law of sin which is in my members.

24 What a wretched man I am! Who will deliver me out of the body of this death?

25 I thank God through Jesus Christ, our Lord! So then with the mind, I myself serve God’s law, but with the flesh, the sin’s law.

Recap

The message in order, in a few minutes of reading.

Romans 8 was the focus this week, with the message tracing how believers move from the condemnation and struggle described in earlier chapters into the freedom that comes from walking by the Holy Spirit. The teaching worked through the whole chapter, showing how the Spirit's presence in a believer's life changes everything, from how we fight sin to how we understand suffering. It was a personal message, with Amy sharing openly that working through this chapter had been sharpening and convicting for her as well.

What was said

To make sense of Romans 8, Amy quickly walked back through the previous chapters. Romans 1 through 7 move from humanity's guilt and the futility of the law, to justification by faith, to the promise of being dead to sin. But many believers feel stuck, either in the chapter 6 mistake of thinking grace is a license to live however they want, or in the chapter 7 trap of grinding away in their own effort to be good Christians. Romans 8 is where Paul says we are not stuck in either of those places.

The opening declaration, "there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus," sets the foundation. The law could never save, only show sin. What the law could not do, God did by sending His Son in human flesh. Now, through the Spirit, the requirement of the law is fulfilled in those who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. Amy pointed to Ezekiel 36 as the Old Testament picture of this, where God promised to remove hearts of stone and cause His people to walk in His statutes by putting His Spirit within them.

The distinction between flesh and Spirit runs through the middle of the chapter. Those who set their minds on the flesh are heading toward death; those who set their minds on the Spirit find life and peace. Amy was struck by the way Paul frames verse 12: instead of saying we are obligated to the Spirit the way we might expect, he simply says we owe the flesh nothing. The flesh only ever defeated and killed us. We do not owe it our obedience.

From there the message turned to how believers actually put sin to death. Amy quoted the Puritan theologian John Owen: "Be killing sin or it will be killing you." The weapon for that fight, drawn from Ephesians 6, is the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. When temptation comes, we bring a specific promise from Scripture and trust it. She referenced a verse-card set Deborah uses, giving Hebrews 13:5-6 as a worked example of how to meet the temptation toward covetousness with God's word and say, "I trust you."

The adoption section of the chapter was described as something that kept getting better. Believers have not received a spirit of slavery and fear, but the spirit of adoption, by which we cry out "Abba, Father." Amy said the word "cry out" mattered to her, because it is not a scripted religion but a real need. From there, being children means being heirs, fellow heirs with Christ of everything God owns.

On suffering, Amy said Paul does not let readers use Romans 8:28 as a prosperity promise. The chapter itself makes clear that both creation and believers are groaning right now. The image of birth pains from Mark 13 was brought in to show that the groaning has a direction and an end: just as labor leads to new life, creation's suffering is leading toward the freedom and glory of the children of God. Present sufferings are real, but Paul calls them momentary and light in comparison with the eternal weight of glory they are producing.

The chapter closes with two layers of intercession, the Spirit praying God's will for us and Jesus at the right hand of the Father interceding for us, and then the great cascade of verses 29 through 39. If God justified us, He will glorify us. Nothing, not tribulation, famine, death, or any created thing, can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus. Amy closed by saying she wanted to be clear that Jesus is not just a mechanism for getting to heaven. He is a person who loves us, someone to be treasured, and being with Him is the point of the eternity we are waiting for.

Doing a Bible study?

Here is a guide we have prepared for you: the passages in order, questions for the group, and room to write.

  1. The teacher described two ditches people fall into: treating God's grace as a license to keep sinning, or grinding away trying to live the Christian life in your own strength. Which of those two ditches do you find yourself closer to, and what does that look like in your day-to-day life?
  2. Romans 8:13 says if by the spirit you are putting to death the deeds of the body, you will live. John Owen's line was quoted: 'Be killing sin or it will be killing you.' What does it actually look like, in a practical sense, to fight your own sin rather than being preoccupied with the sin you see in the world around you?

0:00 So I just feel like I wanna tell you that for us teachers being up here, God really uses this to sharpen us. So here we go, Amy. Is that better or is it? Is it on? Okay.
0:20 That's better. This chapter eight has just been so powerful for me and stretching and convicting. And I just feel like going back to the fundamentals for me has been really good in my life. And I know that one of the reasons God has me up here teaching is to refine me and just to do something in my life that I really needed. And so I just wanted you to know that.
0:53 And I really wanna encourage you, couple friends and I were talking this past week. Reading the book and answering the questions is so important, but I wanna make sure that you're reading the chapter in the Bible. And that should be obvious, guess. But and also but maybe it's not because maybe we're just barely getting the questions done, but I really want to make sure if you haven't read Romans eight, sit down and read it. And if you have time, just sit down and read the whole book of Romans.
1:25 Maybe you could do it in chunks, but it's just so good to have an overview of the whole book. And that's really good. I've had a couple friends come to me saying they just wanna know how to study the Bible. And that's one of the first ways is just to get an overview of whatever book you're studying. And then as you're reading each chapter, one of the things I like to do is find like a key phrase or word or something that's used over and over.
1:52 And in chapter eight, it would be the Holy Spirit was a big one. And you just go through and either you can either mark it in the in your Bible, or you can just go through and write on a separate piece of paper and make a list of everything you learn about the Holy Spirit in that chapter. And for some reason, when I do that, things just come alive and they just I learned things that I didn't see by just reading the text. And just seeing like what the Holy Spirit does just all in one spot really stands out to me. I was just gonna read you part of my list of what the holy what I learned from the Holy Spirit in chapter eight.
2:34 It says, the law of the spirit of life set you free from the law of sin and death. Those who walk according to the spirit, the laws are fulfilled in them. Those who are according to the spirit set their spirit. The mind on the spirit is life and peace. You are in the spirit if the spirit of God dwells in you.
2:58 If you have if you don't have the spirit of Christ, you don't belong to Christ. If the spirit is in him who raised Jesus and dwells in you, he will give you life. So anyways, that's just part of it. It's just it's a really powerful way to go through and and study and just if you wanna go a little bit deeper. So I feel like Romans eight is kind of a climax of this book.
3:27 Everything leading up to and this is just such a amazing chapter and it's kind of a lot pressure for a teacher. But and I just I feel like it's even one of the most important books or chapters in the Bible too. I love this Roseanne was saying this is one of her favorite chapters. So I just wanted to kind of like quickly recap where we've been leading up to Romans eight. So Romans one, we learned that the gospel is the power of God for salvation.
4:01 We learned that we're without excuse because he put it in our conscience and showed us creation, so we know that there is a God. And then men exchanged the truth for a lie. In Romans two, we learn there's no partiality with God. So Jews who have the law also have stubborn and unrepentant hearts, and they will also experience the wrath of God. In Romans three, we learned that by the works of the law, no flesh will be justified, so it's not by works.
4:38 The law just shows us where we're sinful. In Romans three twenty three, we've all sinned, Jews and Gentiles, everybody, we've all sinned and fall short. In Romans three and four, we learn about justification and God's answer for sin. Justification that Christ stood in our place and died on the cross. And when I put my faith and my trust in him, then I'm justified.
5:09 So it's by faith. In chapter four, we see it's always been by faith that through Abraham's example in the Old Testament. Romans five, God showed his love for us. So we see while we were still sinners was when Christ died for us and we're saved from the wrath of God. Romans six, all who were baptized into Christ have been baptized into his death.
5:38 So we're no longer slaves to sin, so that's like, yay, we're set free and the sin has no power over us anymore. We're dead to sin. Let's see. Okay. And then Romans seven, we learned that the law is good and holy and right, but if we try to live by the law in our flesh, we're gonna fail.
6:04 And we're gonna see a lot today that I feel like sometimes we feel stuck in Romans seven or in six where we feel like either we're free to sin because God's it's God's righteousness or we try so hard to live the law in our flesh and we can't. But that's not where we're stuck. We're in Romans eight and that's the beauty of it. And so we get to look back on everything that he's done for us and see that we're set free from that sin nature and now we're free to live and walk in the power of the Holy Spirit. And he's the one that fulfills God's will in our lives for us.
6:49 And this was prophesied in the Old Testament. In Ezekiel 3six 26 through 27, the Israelites were in Babylonian captivity. And those verses say, he says, moreover, I will give you a new heart and I will put a new spirit within you. And I will remove the heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. And I will put my spirit within you and cause you to walk in my statutes, and you'll be careful to observe my law.
7:24 So that's a that's a picture of the new covenant where we stand now with his spirit in us that causes us. Remember that roller coaster analogy I gave a couple weeks ago? When we make it up to the car, when Christ lifts us up, when we go down the roller coaster, it's through his power. When we go right up the rails that were the law. We it's through the spirit and through his power.
7:52 And it's a new heart that he's given us. Okay. So let's pray. Lord, I just thank you so much for this word and for this chapter and for the way you love us and what you've done in our lives and how you're drawing us even closer to you, Lord. Lord, I just pray that your spirit would speak through me and speak to me.
8:18 And Lord, we just just pray that our hearts would be open to what you have to say in Jesus' name. Okay. So I don't have again, I don't have the words on the screen. So if you want to open up your Bibles, I was telling someone this morning, I don't really have a lot of illustrations or stories or anything this morning. I just feel like we're just gonna read through the text and talk about it.
8:41 And, just because it's been so powerful, to me, so I wanted to share with you what I've been learning. So Romans eight verse one says, therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. And that's huge. We, remember when we were united with Adam when he sinned, sin equals condemnation. And now we're reunited with Christ.
9:10 So we know we have no condemnation when we stand before God. Verse two, the law of the spirit of life in Christ has set you free from the law of sin and of death. For what the law could not do, weak as it was through the flesh, God did. So remember that the law doesn't offer salvation. It was never meant to bring salvation.
9:40 It was just meant to show us where we were sinful. So that's what it means is what the law could not do. God did, sending his own son in the likeness of sinful flesh and as an offering for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh. Hebrews two seventeen, it says, for this reason, he had to be made like them. So Christ had to be made like man, fully human in every way in order that he might be able to become a merciful and faithful high priest in service to God, and that he might make atonement for the sins of the people.
10:22 So he was fully God and fully man, and that's why he came in the likeness of our flesh. Remember, he chose not to sin and then he was body and in his body was sin was condemned on our behalf. So verse four, so that the requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us. So how was the law fulfilled in us? It's who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the spirit.
10:57 So that's what chapter eight is all about. Not walking according to the flesh. Remember, we're not walking, not it's not chapter six where it's His righteousness so I can live however I want. We are walking according to the spirit and God's law is fulfilled in us when we do that. We're not free to sin, we're free from sin.
11:24 So verse five, For those who are according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who are according to the spirit, the things of the spirit. For the mindset on the flesh is death, but the mindset on the spirit is life and peace. Because the mindset on the flesh is hostile toward God. For it does not subject itself to the law of God, for it's not even able to do so. And those who are in the flesh cannot please God.
12:04 Those who are in the flesh cannot please God. So again, it's not chapter six where we're just that licentiousness that the question that came up that if it's his righteousness, then I can depend on that and then live how I want. We have a new way of living now. So does it matter how we're living in salvation and in sanctification? Does it matter how we're living?
12:36 I think that this is saying that it does. And it's also not the chap what we learned about in chapter seven that desperately trying to live the law and do what we know is right in our but we're doing it in our flesh. That's also living in the flesh if we think we're doing everything perfectly. Going to church and doing all the right things and being a good Christian, that's also living in the flesh and trying to live the law. And that's we will fail every time we try to do it like that.
13:12 So verse nine, however, you are not in the flesh but in the spirit, if indeed the spirit of God dwells in you. So if you have the spirit of God in you, then you're of the spirit. You're not of the flesh. So this was kind of all kind of earth shattering to me, but if anyone does not have the spirit of Christ, he does not belong to him. So if you belong to him, you have his spirit.
13:41 If you've been justified, you have the Holy Spirit. If Christ is in you, though the spirit is dead because of sin, yet the spirit is alive because of righteousness. So our bodies are going to die physically. We're we're wasting away, but our spirit is alive because of him and it's because of, again, because of his righteousness. Verse 11, but if the spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his spirit who dwells in you.
14:21 Okay. So this this next part is the part that really got to me, just because he introduces a thought and you think he's gonna counter it with the opposing thought, but he doesn't. So in verse 12, he says, so then brothers and sisters, we are under obligation not to the flesh to live according to the flesh. So we're not under obligation to the flesh. Remember, we don't owe our flesh anything.
14:55 Our flesh didn't do anything for us but defeat us and kill us. So we don't need to yield to our flesh. It's our murderer. It is what leads us to death. We don't owe it anything.
15:11 So we're not under obligation to the flesh to live according to the flesh. So then you would think he was gonna say, but we're under obligation to the spirit to live according to the spirit. But then he he's I think he wants to make something clear. And so in verse 13, he says, for if you're living according to the flesh, you must die. But if this if by the spirit, you're putting to death the deeds of the body, you will live.
15:40 And this is a spiritual death and a spiritual life that it's talking about. And that really hit me because that's like, wow, if we're not living according to the spirit, if we're living in the flesh, that's leading to death. And I wanted to jump down to verse 30 real quick. The very last part of verse 30, it says, these whom he justified, he also glorified. So the point is if you are justified, you will be glorified.
16:19 He's not gonna let anyone slip through. He's not gonna lose any of us that have his spirit. I think the point is that if we truly have been justified, we truly put our faith in him, then we won't be living according to the flesh. And remember, it's not a perfection thing again. It's it's a process of walking and being led by the spirit.
16:46 Because in verse 14, he kind of explains it, what he's been saying. He says in verse 14, for all who are being led by the spirit of God, these are the sons of God. And that really hit me because I feel like a lot of times I do live out of my flesh and I think it's it's important. And yes, we are trusting Christ's righteousness for our salvation, but our life should show a change and a change in a new direction. I know a lot of people depend on maybe a prayer they said when they were a kid, well, I prayed that prayer, I'm good.
17:25 But we need to see there should be a change, and there should be fruit, and there should be something that's changed into your life and giving you a new direction. So it says, but if by the spirit so back in verse 13, if by the spirit you're putting to death the deeds of the body, you will live. So I was thinking about that putting to death the deeds of the body. It reminded me in chapter six when it was, Don't present your members as instruments of unrighteousness. And I love this quote.
18:04 There's a puritan theologian named John Owen and he said, be killing sin or it will be killing you. And the other thing that kinda stuck out to me about this was like, this is the deeds of my body. I'm not like killing, like getting all upset about the world's sin and where everyone else is wrong. This is like, I should hate sin in my own life. We should expect the world to sin, but this is like this is like a hatred of my own sin and I wanna put that to death and kill sin or it's going to kill me.
18:48 Then I started to think about, well, how do we do that? In Ephesians six sixteen and seventeen, we learn how we do that. We have the sword of the spirit and that's we need a sword to kill. Right? But the sword of the spirit is the word of God.
19:07 So how does it all work? I love in Romans ten seventeen, it says, so faith comes through hearing and hearing by the word of Christ. So when we read the word, we trust it. I love how Deborah is always saying, say, I trust you Jesus. So when we hear his word, we say, I trust you.
19:30 So when we're tempted to sin in some way, then we read his word and we trust him. And I just thought of giving an example. Deborah has these two. I love these. You just write verses.
19:46 So you carry you can carry it with you throughout the day and use them to help you memorize. But and then you can have his word in your heart. You know, I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you. So a verse in here let's see. Thought it was in here.
20:07 It is Hebrews thirteen five and six. It says, let your character be free from the love of money, being content with what you have. For he himself said, I will never desert you nor will I ever forsake you. So that we confidently say, the Lord is my helper. I will not be afraid.
20:29 What shall man do to me? So say, I'm being tempted to we talked about being covetous last week. I'm tempted to want something I don't have, but we come to God's word and says, be free from the love of money and be content with what you have because God will never leave you nor forsake you. And then you use that verse and you say, I trust you. And you kill the temptation to sin.
20:58 And I think that that just that little little small victories over sin like that show the Holy Spirit in you and working in you. In Romans one seventeen says, the just shall live by faith. So that's making more and more sense to me. That's how we're living. We're living by faith in God's word.
21:22 We're not living we're not trusting in our own flesh. So are you being led by the spirit? Are you remember the wheel, which way is your wheel turning? Are you trying to live like a good Christian but trying in your flesh? Are you trusting God?
21:53 So this next really cool part. I think it just keeps getting good and better and better. Verse 15 says, for you have not received the spirit of slavery leading to fear again, but you've received the spirit of adoption as sons by which we cry out, Abba, Father. This is cool because he didn't make slaves out of us. We were slaves to sin, but he didn't make us slaves to him, but in a way we are, but he made us children.
22:25 So he wanted he wants us to be his children. He wants a family, and that's that's life. And I love the word we cry the words like we cry out because I feel like, you know, anyone could say, father, you know, anyone could say, God, dear my God, or I believe in God, but this is like this is real when we cry out to him. It's not like a like a programmed thing. It's we're crying out, and it's showing that we need God, we need a savior.
23:04 I had a friend a while back who was just going through a hard time. Was like, what's going on? And she just said, I've been trying to live life without God. Been going through the motions and I'm exhausted and I can't do it anymore. I just think that this shows being a child of God and we cry out for him like, I need you daddy.
23:27 I need you. I need a savior. And he'll give us rest. And when we take his yoke upon him, it's easy and he gives us rest. It shouldn't be hard.
23:41 We're not doing it in our flesh. We're doing it through his power. And we're His children. And I also like the contrast between this kind of crazy hate for my own sin and I'm gonna kill it and just, I don't know, that kind of like warrior like mentality. I was thinking there's a book called Tender Warrior that's for men actually, but just like I wanna kill that sin, but then on the other hand, like crying out for a father.
24:14 It's like a there's like both. We need both, and just have like that tenderness too. So it's verse 16, The spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are children of God. Verse 17. So it keeps getting better.
24:38 So if children if we're children of God, then we're heirs also. We're heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ. So what does God just think about that. This like I don't know why this hit me so hard, I was just like, what does what does God own? He owns everything and work his heirs.
25:04 We're fellow heirs with his son. In Romans four thirteen, it said, the promise to Abraham, remember the promise to Abraham and his descendants that he would be heir of the world. And it was not through the law but through the righteousness of faith. So we're heirs of the world. In verse 17, it goes on to say, if indeed we suffer with him so that we also may be glorified with him.
25:35 So we're going to suffer. So it's And right now, there's suffering. And I and I thought about this, what what are we suffering with him? And a lot of times, if I don't understand something, then I try to try to look at it within the context of what he's saying. Verse 18 says, I consider the sufferings of this present time.
26:02 So that would be the sufferings that you're going through of the present time. And he also see, in verse 35, he talks about tribulation and distress and persecution and famine and nakedness and peril or sword. That's the kind of suffering that he's talking about. So what does it mean to suffer with Christ? I think it's interesting too.
26:33 I think I feel like a lot of truths of God's word go both ways. Like Christ came to this earth to suffer as we suffer, but now we suffer as he suffered when we are living in this present time. Our sufferings right now can be cancer, loss, injury, sickness. There's beheadings, war, some awful things going on in this world. So how do we suffer with Christ?
27:07 Think we go through it with him and we trust him as we walk through it. Because the other way would be to be angry and say, I'm your child. Why do I have to go through this? Or we can we can be tender and trust him and and go through it with him. Okay.
27:32 So the good part about it is, for I consider the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory that is to be revealed in us. Matthew thirteen forty three. It says, then the righteous will shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their father. When we're glorified, when we're with him in heaven, it says, we'll shine like the sun in his kingdom. That's the glory that's gonna be revealed in us.
28:05 And I think that we can give, you know, that we can give up some of the comforts of this world and of the flesh, and we can go through some of these things knowing what he has in store for us. I love it. In second Corinthians four seventeen, he says, for momentary, light affliction, that's what he calls our sufferings. Momentary and light affliction is producing for us an eternal weight of glory far beyond all comparison. And so I just encourage you as I know a lot of a lot of us are suffering and just to suffer with Christ and know what it's producing in you.
28:57 And so it keeps getting better and better I think, because now it's gonna talk it's talking about creation. It's the next part. In verse 19, it says, the anxious longing of the creation waits eagerly for the revealing of the sons of God. So creation itself is waiting for us to be revealed as the sons of God, for us to shine like the sun in his kingdom. And I just thought that was interesting because you always think about it like God's preparing a place, He's gonna build a new heaven and a new earth, and we can't wait to be in that.
29:35 But it's kind of in here, it's saying creation's waiting for us. Creation can't wait. It's like God's building a playground, but the playground can't wait for the kids to come play. It's like it's both, you know? And it's all I feel like God always has like it's both.
29:53 It's like I don't know. It's He's so amazing. It says in verse 20 that the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of Him who subjected it. So creation's suffering too. I think and I think I've I think I heard it from Piper once that in a way we needed to see the fallen earth.
30:21 We needed to see sickness because we need to see what sin does. We need to have a clear picture of things just not being right. This is what sin does. It causes all of this. But it says, in hope that the creation will also be set free from its slavery to corruption into the freedom of the glory of the children of God.
30:43 So again, it's the freedom of us and the glory of us that's gonna eventually when creation is waiting for that for the sons, the freedom of the children of God. Verse 22, for we know that the whole creation groans and suffers the pains of childbirth together until now. And that's, something that I've heard about, just the pains of childbirth, that part right there. That reminded me of a verse in Mark thirteen eight. It says, for nations talking about the end, kind of nearing the end of of the world.
31:23 For nation will rise against nation and kingdom against kingdom. There will be earthquakes in various places. There will also be famines. These things are merely the beginning of birth pains. So that's what it's talking about.
31:37 And I remember my mom always explaining this to me, like birth pains, they get worse and worse and closer and closer together as the the end draws near. So I've always kind of thought, you know, birth pains, like the end is coming. But what is the meaning of it and what is it leading to? Well, when you're having birth pains, it's leading to a baby. Right?
32:00 So at the end of the birth pains, the creation is groaning is leading to a life. And that I think is our adoption as sons, our complete redemption of our bodies, and our new our complete when we're with the Lord and when creation and when creation is free from corruption. So all of this pain and suffering is like the pains of childbirth. There's a purpose in it all and it is gonna end in life. Verse 23, not only this, but we ourselves having the first fruits of the spirit, even we ourselves grown within ourselves waiting eagerly for the adoption our adoption as sons, the redemption of our body.
32:54 And I was talking with a couple of my friends too about just the prosperity gospel. There's a lot of teaching out there that says, you know, once you give your life to Jesus, things are gonna go well, you know, like the health and wealth kind of thing. And I think a lot of people use, we're not to it yet, but verse 28, we know that God causes all things to work together for good for those who love him. People can use that for prosperity gospel type of teaching. But again, if you're reading it within the context of this chapter, it's clear that we're suffering.
33:31 Creation is groaning, and suffering is for now, and heaven's gonna be later. I think it's clear. It says because it says, even we ourselves groan, we're waiting, we're we're groaning, we're waiting for our full adoption as sons. It hasn't completely happened yet. We haven't our bodies haven't been redeemed.
33:58 And then again, so as you read on verse 24, for in hope we have been saved. So we've been saved, but hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what already sees? So if our lives were already perfect, then we wouldn't be eagerly waiting for our adoption and the redemption of our bodies. We're going to be suffering.
34:24 But if we hope for what we do not see with perseverance, we eagerly wait for it. In the same way, the spirit also helps our weakness For we don't know how to pray as we should. But the spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. And he searches the hearts. He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the spirit is.
34:53 And I love this part. It says because he intercedes for the saints according to the will of God. So the spirit is praying for you, praying God's will for you. Isn't that amazing that God is praying to God for his will in your life? And that's when it says, for we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to his purpose.
35:23 And I like that last part again because it's called according to his purpose. And I thought of Joseph in in Genesis. Genesis fifty twenty, Joseph, his brother sold him into slavery, and then he got blamed for something he didn't do, and he got thrown in prison, and a lot of bad things happened to him. But in Genesis fifty twenty, it says, and as for you, you meant evil against me. This is what he's saying to his brothers when he meets them again.
35:56 You meant evil against me, but God meant it for good in order to bring about this present result to preserve many people alive. Because Joseph was able to store up food and save it, and it preserved his family and God's family and many other people. Even though he did go through a lot of suffering, God meant it for good. And I think that's what the verse means. Okay.
36:24 So we're called according to his purpose and it's for his glory. In verse 29, says, for those whom he foreknew, he also predestined to become conformed to the image of his son. So that is his purpose for us, is to be conformed to the image of his son. That's the sanctification process that we're going through, and that's the goal, and suffering and going through that helps with being conformed. And it says, so that he would be the firstborn among among many brethren.
37:04 And these whom he predestined, he also called. And these whom he called, he also justified, and those he justified, he glorified. So again, it's that promise, if you've been justified, if you put your faith in him, then you will be glorified, and we hope for that which we don't see. And we're eagerly waiting for when we're glorified and our bodies are redeemed and our full adoption as sons of God. And then creation is waiting for it too.
37:39 I just love that. Oh, and Nancy told me this is really cool. I forgot this part. This morning, she came in and said they were she was studying with her kids this morning or a couple days ago about creation groaning, and she might have to help me. But the so she was saying that the leaves in the fall that are yellow and red and orange and all these beautiful colors, she was saying that that's actually the leaves true color, and it's chlorophyll.
38:09 So there's chlorophyll in the leaves that make them green, but this beautiful color that we're seeing now is actually their true color. And creation's just like longing for the day when they can be in their true color all the time and waiting for us when we can be shining like the sun in our true color all the time. So that's what it's gonna be like. Creation will be like that vibrant, beautiful color all the time. Is that right?
38:38 I loved that. So okay. And the end of this is just so beautiful. It says, what should we say to these things? If God is for us, then who can be against us?
38:54 I mean, we have the Holy Spirit praying God's will for us for crying out loud. I mean, who can be against us? If he who did not spare his own son, but delivered him over for us all, how would he also not also with him free how will he not also with him freely give us all things? Who will bring a charge against God's elect? God is the one who justified.
39:20 So he's the one who justifies. Who's the one who can condemn? We're not condemned before God. Who can be against us? It was Jesus who died.
39:31 Yes. Rather he rather he was raised, who's at the right hand of God, who enter who also intercedes for us. Jesus is praying for us too. He died for us. Holy Spirit's praying for us.
39:42 Jesus is praying for us. God's the one who justifies. No one can stand against us. And this is who will separate us from the love of Christ? Will tribulation, distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?
40:02 It can't separate us because we're suffering with him. He's with us as we go through those things. Just as it is written, for your sake, we are being put to death all day long. We are considered a sheep to be slaughtered. So put to death the deeds of the body and trust him in his word.
40:24 Yield to him. So that's that's what it's all about. Living by the spirit, yielding to the spirit. He has given us freedom. John eight thirty six, so if the son makes you free, you'll be free indeed.
40:41 Verse 37, but in all these things, we overwhelmingly conquer through him who loved us. And he says, for I'm convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor other created thing will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. I was just really struck by the love and I hope that comes through by how much he loved us, like while we were still sinners. He died for us and just that love. And I I think at the same time that I wanna make I just felt like saying that he's not just like the way to get to heaven and have eternal life, but he is someone he loves us so much that he is someone he himself, it's a person.
41:43 It's not like a list of things we have to do to get there. It's a person and he's someone to be treasured and not just like the way to get there and because that's what our eternity is gonna be, is to be with him and that's what we're looking forward to is to be with him. And I was talking with I'm talking with my friends a lot this week. There's some other girls that are studying Song of Solomon right now, and I'm just studying about the love of Christ. And I always have loved Song of Solomon one four.
42:18 It says, draw after me. I mean, draw me after you and let us run together. And I just love that verse because it's just the love of just like, let us run together. It's it's not it's not like a hard treasury of like trying to do what's right and working in the flesh, but it's life and the power of the Holy Spirit. Okay.
42:44 So this is kind of been a self evaluation for me, and I just want to ask a couple questions. So are you still thinking I can continue to sin because he's so gracious and he'll forgive me? Or are you trying so hard just to live in the flesh and do what's right and be that good Christian, but you're doing it in your own strength? Remember verse 14, for all who are being led by the spirit of God, these are the sons of God. So I just encourage you to just be led by the spirit and allow him to work through you and yield to him.
43:31 And I just wanted to repeat, Ezekiel thirty seven twenty six through 27. It says, I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you, and I will remove the heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. And I will put my spirit in you and cause you to walk in my statutes, and you will be careful to observe my law. So that's it. I wanna thank the Lord.
43:57 Thank you, Lord, so much for your word and so rich. And Lord, I just pray that we would hear it and choose to submit and surrender to your spirit, Lord, every day. We know it's a process, and Lord, we thank you for your grace that you give us. We just thank you for how much you love us and that you pray for us. Lord, help us to walk with you through this life, through the sufferings of this age as we hope and we wait for what you have for us in the future.
44:31 In Jesus' name, amen.
