2 Corinthians 3
the veil over minds removed when anyone turns to the Lord Jesus
1 Are we beginning again to commend ourselves? Or do we need, as do some, letters of commendation to you or from you?
2 You are our letter, written in our hearts, known and read by all men;
3 being revealed that you are a letter of Christ, served by us, written not with ink, but with the Spirit of the living God; not in tablets of stone, but in tablets that are hearts of flesh.
4 Such confidence we have through Christ toward God;
5 not that we are sufficient of ourselves, to account anything as from ourselves; but our sufficiency is from God;
6 who also made us sufficient as servants of a new covenant; not of the letter, but of the Spirit. For the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.
7 But if the service of death, written engraved on stones, came with glory, so that the children of Israel could not look steadfastly on the face of Moses for the glory of his face, which was passing away;
8 won’t service of the Spirit be with much more glory?
9 For if the service of condemnation has glory, the service of righteousness exceeds much more in glory.
10 For most certainly that which has been made glorious has not been made glorious in this respect, by reason of the glory that surpasses.
11 For if that which passes away was with glory, much more that which remains is in glory.
12 Having therefore such a hope, we use great boldness of speech,
13 and not as Moses, who put a veil on his face, that the children of Israel wouldn’t look steadfastly on the end of that which was passing away.
14 But their minds were hardened, for until this very day at the reading of the old covenant the same veil remains, because in Christ it passes away.
15 But to this day, when Moses is read, a veil lies on their heart.
16 But whenever one turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away.
17 Now the Lord is the Spirit and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.
18 But we all, with unveiled face seeing the glory of the Lord as in a mirror, are transformed into the same image from glory to glory, even as from the Lord, the Spirit.

Galatians 5
works of sinful nature versus fruit of the Spirit listed
1 Stand firm therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and don’t be entangled again with a yoke of bondage.
2 Behold, I, Paul, tell you that if you receive circumcision, Christ will profit you nothing.
3 Yes, I testify again to every man who receives circumcision, that he is a debtor to do the whole law.
4 You are alienated from Christ, you who desire to be justified by the law. You have fallen away from grace.
5 For we, through the Spirit, by faith wait for the hope of righteousness.
6 For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision amounts to anything, nor uncircumcision, but faith working through love.
7 You were running well! Who interfered with you that you should not obey the truth?
8 This persuasion is not from him who calls you.
9 A little yeast grows through the whole lump.
10 I have confidence toward you in the Lord that you will think no other way. But he who troubles you will bear his judgment, whoever he is.
11 But I, brothers, if I still preach circumcision, why am I still persecuted? Then the stumbling block of the cross has been removed.
12 I wish that those who disturb you would cut themselves off.
13 For you, brothers, were called for freedom. Only don’t use your freedom for gain to the flesh, but through love be servants to one another.
14 For the whole law is fulfilled in one word, in this: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”
15 But if you bite and devour one another, be careful that you don’t consume one another.
16 But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you won’t fulfill the lust of the flesh.
17 For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, that you may not do the things that you desire.
18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.
19 Now the deeds of the flesh are obvious, which are: adultery, sexual immorality, uncleanness, lustfulness,
20 idolatry, sorcery, hatred, strife, jealousies, outbursts of anger, rivalries, divisions, heresies,
21 envy, murders, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these; of which I forewarn you, even as I also forewarned you, that those who practice such things will not inherit God’s Kingdom.
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith,
23 gentleness, and self-control. Against such things there is no law.
24 Those who belong to Christ have crucified the flesh with its passions and lusts.
25 If we live by the Spirit, let’s also walk by the Spirit.
26 Let’s not become conceited, provoking one another, and envying one another.

Psalm 18
David saying God gave him the shield of victory, right hand supports me
1 I love you, Yahweh, my strength.
2 Yahweh is my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge; my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my high tower.
3 I call on Yahweh, who is worthy to be praised; and I am saved from my enemies.
4 The cords of death surrounded me. The floods of ungodliness made me afraid.
5 The cords of Sheol were around me. The snares of death came on me.
6 In my distress I called on Yahweh, and cried to my God. He heard my voice out of his temple. My cry before him came into his ears.
7 Then the earth shook and trembled. The foundations also of the mountains quaked and were shaken, because he was angry.
8 Smoke went out of his nostrils. Consuming fire came out of his mouth. Coals were kindled by it.
9 He bowed the heavens also, and came down. Thick darkness was under his feet.
10 He rode on a cherub, and flew. Yes, he soared on the wings of the wind.
11 He made darkness his hiding place, his pavilion around him, darkness of waters, thick clouds of the skies.
12 At the brightness before him his thick clouds passed, hailstones and coals of fire.
13 Yahweh also thundered in the sky. The Most High uttered his voice: hailstones and coals of fire.
14 He sent out his arrows, and scattered them; Yes, great lightning bolts, and routed them.
15 Then the channels of waters appeared. The foundations of the world were laid bare at your rebuke, Yahweh, at the blast of the breath of your nostrils.
16 He sent from on high. He took me. He drew me out of many waters.
17 He delivered me from my strong enemy, from those who hated me; for they were too mighty for me.
18 They came on me in the day of my calamity, but Yahweh was my support.
19 He brought me out also into a large place. He delivered me, because he delighted in me.
20 Yahweh has rewarded me according to my righteousness. According to the cleanness of my hands has he recompensed me.
21 For I have kept the ways of Yahweh, and have not wickedly departed from my God.
22 For all his ordinances were before me. I didn’t put away his statutes from me.
23 I was also blameless with him. I kept myself from my iniquity.
24 Therefore Yahweh has rewarded me according to my righteousness, according to the cleanness of my hands in his eyesight.
25 With the merciful you will show yourself merciful. With the perfect man, you will show yourself perfect.
26 With the pure, you will show yourself pure. With the crooked you will show yourself shrewd.
27 For you will save the afflicted people, but the haughty eyes you will bring down.
28 For you will light my lamp, Yahweh. My God will light up my darkness.
29 For by you, I advance through a troop. By my God, I leap over a wall.
30 As for God, his way is perfect. Yahweh’s word is tried. He is a shield to all those who take refuge in him.
31 For who is God, except Yahweh? Who is a rock, besides our God,
32 the God who arms me with strength, and makes my way perfect?
33 He makes my feet like deer’s feet, and sets me on my high places.
34 He teaches my hands to war, so that my arms bend a bow of bronze.
35 You have also given me the shield of your salvation. Your right hand sustains me. Your gentleness has made me great.
36 You have enlarged my steps under me, My feet have not slipped.
37 I will pursue my enemies, and overtake them. Neither will I turn again until they are consumed.
38 I will strike them through, so that they will not be able to rise. They shall fall under my feet.
39 For you have armed me with strength to the battle. You have subdued under me those who rose up against me.
40 You have also made my enemies turn their backs to me, that I might cut off those who hate me.
41 They cried, but there was no one to save; even to Yahweh, but he didn’t answer them.
42 Then I beat them small as the dust before the wind. I cast them out as the mire of the streets.
43 You have delivered me from the strivings of the people. You have made me the head of the nations. A people whom I have not known shall serve me.
44 As soon as they hear of me they shall obey me. The foreigners shall submit themselves to me.
45 The foreigners shall fade away, and shall come trembling out of their close places.
46 Yahweh lives; and blessed be my rock. Exalted be the God of my salvation,
47 even the God who executes vengeance for me, and subdues peoples under me.
48 He rescues me from my enemies. Yes, you lift me up above those who rise up against me. You deliver me from the violent man.
49 Therefore I will give thanks to you, Yahweh, among the nations, and will sing praises to your name.
50 He gives great deliverance to his king, and shows loving kindness to his anointed, to David and to his offspring, forever more.

1 Corinthians 13
love is kind, does not keep a record of wrong, not selfish
1 If I speak with the languages of men and of angels, but don’t have love, I have become sounding brass, or a clanging cymbal.
2 If I have the gift of prophecy, and know all mysteries and all knowledge; and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but don’t have love, I am nothing.
3 If I give away all my goods to feed the poor, and if I give my body to be burned, but don’t have love, it profits me nothing.
4 Love is patient and is kind; love doesn’t envy. Love doesn’t brag, is not proud,
5 doesn’t behave itself inappropriately, doesn’t seek its own way, is not provoked, takes no account of evil;
6 doesn’t rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth;
7 bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.
8 Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will be done away with. Where there are various languages, they will cease. Where there is knowledge, it will be done away with.
9 For we know in part, and we prophesy in part;
10 but when that which is complete has come, then that which is partial will be done away with.
11 When I was a child, I spoke as a child, I felt as a child, I thought as a child. Now that I have become a man, I have put away childish things.
12 For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part, but then I will know fully, even as I was also fully known.
13 But now faith, hope, and love remain—these three. The greatest of these is love.

Recap
The message in order, in a few minutes of reading.
Deborah Buckingham walked First B women through Romans 12 and 13, tracing Paul's argument that right belief is meant to produce right living, and that a church full of untransformed, quarreling people is a contradiction of everything Paul is urging.
What was said
Paul opens chapter 12 with "therefore," and Deborah emphasized that the word is load-bearing. Everything from chapter 1 through 11 is the foundation; chapters 12 and 13 are what that foundation is supposed to produce. Paul's word choice matters too: he says "I urge you," not "I command you," because God gives us free will. The call to offer our bodies as living sacrifices is a voluntary, ongoing act. The well-known problem, as one unnamed quote put it, is that a living sacrifice keeps crawling off the altar when the heat rises.
The mechanism Paul gives for staying on that altar is a transformed mind. Deborah drew on the Ephesians 4 phrase "the spirit of your mind" to make the point that the mind is not a neutral data-processor. It carries a whole orientation, a viewpoint that colors everything we see. That orientation is what has to change, and the only thing that changes it is God's Word, because His Word is His mind, and taking it in is how we begin to reflect Him. The image Paul uses elsewhere, the metamorphosis of a caterpillar, makes clear this is not a minor adjustment but a complete remaking.
Deborah described two church experiences from her recent travels, including a pastor who barred her and her husband from communion because he had not "interviewed" them, to show what happens when doctrine accumulates without transformation. The fruit of the Spirit listed in Galatians 5, love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, and the rest, was simply absent. She connected this to a pattern she kept running into: a Moody Radio interview about church hurt, a dissolved California congregation she had worshipped in for twenty years, and a new believer on a plane to Jackson who had stopped attending church entirely because of jealousy and gossip among members. The thread running through all of it, she said, is what Paul names at the end of Galatians 5: envy and jealousy, which she called serious enough that someone had told her they put Jesus on the cross.
Before Paul assigns spiritual gifts, he inserts a call to humility, and Deborah argued that sequence is deliberate. Pride treats a gift as personal achievement; false humility refuses to use a gift at all, which she called laziness and disobedience. Both waste what God has already prepared for a person to do. The test for whether someone is working in their actual gift, drawing on John Piper, is simple: there will be joy in doing it, and there will be fruit. If year after year there is neither, it is time to ask the Lord again.
The Dead Sea and Sea of Galilee illustration, shown on screen, carried the point about output. Both receive water from the same source. The Sea of Galilee is alive because it has a large outlet; the Dead Sea has none, and historically was called the "stink sea." Deborah applied this directly to Christians who only receive in church and never give out, and to the stinky-sponge problem of taking in doctrine without squeezing it out in service. Using the gifts is not optional if the body is going to stay healthy.
Romans 13 brought the discussion to civic responsibility. Deborah read Paul's statement that governing authorities are established by God, and pushed back hard on Christian disengagement from voting, citing figures suggesting that in the last presidential election only around a quarter of eligible Christian voters actually cast a ballot. She held up Daniel as the model: a cooperative, exemplary citizen of a pagan empire right up to the moment the law required him to worship a man instead of God. That, she said, is the posture Paul calls for, full civic participation with a clear line about where God's law takes precedence.
She closed by following Paul's ending, "Wake up," with a short two-wolves story told by a grandfather to his grandson. One wolf is anger, jealousy, arrogance, and lies; the other is joy, peace, kindness, and generosity. Which one wins? The one you feed. The question she left the room with was whether, day by day, they were feeding their minds on God's Word or on the noise of the surrounding culture.
