referenced as background for the two-word response but God, we are dead in our trespasses

1 You were made alive when you were dead in transgressions and sins,

2 in which you once walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in the children of disobedience;

3 among whom we also all once lived in the lusts of our flesh, doing the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, even as the rest.

4 But God, being rich in mercy, for his great love with which he loved us,

5 even when we were dead through our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved),

6 and raised us up with him, and made us to sit with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus,

7 that in the ages to come he might show the exceeding riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus;

8 for by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God,

9 not of works, that no one would boast.

10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared before that we would walk in them.

11 Therefore remember that once you, the Gentiles in the flesh, who are called “uncircumcision” by that which is called “circumcision”, (in the flesh, made by hands);

12 that you were at that time separate from Christ, alienated from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of the promise, having no hope and without God in the world.

13 But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off are made near in the blood of Christ.

14 For he is our peace, who made both one, and broke down the middle wall of partition,

15 having abolished in his flesh the hostility, the law of commandments contained in ordinances, that he might create in himself one new man of the two, making peace;

16 and might reconcile them both in one body to God through the cross, having killed the hostility thereby.

17 He came and preached peace to you who were far off and to those who were near.

18 For through him we both have our access in one Spirit to the Father.

19 So then you are no longer strangers and foreigners, but you are fellow citizens with the saints, and of the household of God,

20 being built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the chief cornerstone;

21 in whom the whole building, fitted together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord;

22 in whom you also are built together for a habitation of God in the Spirit.

Luke 15

I was dead now alive, lost but now found, noted as a paraphrase from a personal perspective

1 Now all the tax collectors and sinners were coming close to him to hear him.

2 The Pharisees and the scribes murmured, saying, “This man welcomes sinners, and eats with them.”

3 He told them this parable.

4 “Which of you men, if you had one hundred sheep, and lost one of them, wouldn’t leave the ninety-nine in the wilderness, and go after the one that was lost, until he found it?

5 When he has found it, he carries it on his shoulders, rejoicing.

6 When he comes home, he calls together his friends and his neighbors, saying to them, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep which was lost!’

7 I tell you that even so there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents, than over ninety-nine righteous people who need no repentance.

8 Or what woman, if she had ten drachma coins, if she lost one drachma coin, wouldn’t light a lamp, sweep the house, and seek diligently until she found it?

9 When she has found it, she calls together her friends and neighbors, saying, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found the drachma which I had lost.’

10 Even so, I tell you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner repenting.”

11 He said, “A certain man had two sons.

12 The younger of them said to his father, ‘Father, give me my share of your property.’ He divided his livelihood between them.

13 Not many days after, the younger son gathered all of this together and traveled into a far country. There he wasted his property with riotous living.

14 When he had spent all of it, there arose a severe famine in that country, and he began to be in need.

15 He went and joined himself to one of the citizens of that country, and he sent him into his fields to feed pigs.

16 He wanted to fill his belly with the husks that the pigs ate, but no one gave him any.

17 But when he came to himself he said, ‘How many hired servants of my father’s have bread enough to spare, and I’m dying with hunger!

18 I will get up and go to my father, and will tell him, “Father, I have sinned against heaven, and in your sight.

19 I am no more worthy to be called your son. Make me as one of your hired servants.”’

20 “He arose, and came to his father. But while he was still far off, his father saw him, and was moved with compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him.

21 The son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven, and in your sight. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.’

22 “But the father said to his servants, ‘Bring out the best robe, and put it on him. Put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet.

23 Bring the fattened calf, kill it, and let us eat, and celebrate;

24 for this, my son, was dead, and is alive again. He was lost, and is found.’ They began to celebrate.

25 “Now his elder son was in the field. As he came near to the house, he heard music and dancing.

26 He called one of the servants to him, and asked what was going on.

27 He said to him, ‘Your brother has come, and your father has killed the fattened calf, because he has received him back safe and healthy.’

28 But he was angry, and would not go in. Therefore his father came out, and begged him.

29 But he answered his father, ‘Behold, these many years I have served you, and I never disobeyed a commandment of yours, but you never gave me a goat, that I might celebrate with my friends.

30 But when this your son came, who has devoured your living with prostitutes, you killed the fattened calf for him.’

31 “He said to him, ‘Son, you are always with me, and all that is mine is yours.

32 But it was appropriate to celebrate and be glad, for this, your brother, was dead, and is alive again. He was lost, and is found.’”

16 When evening came, his disciples went down to the sea,

21 They were willing therefore to receive him into the boat. Immediately the boat was at the land where they were going.

Recap

The message in order, in a few minutes of reading.

Pastor Ray opened Romans 1:16-17 the week after giving the congregation a homework assignment: define the gospel in ten words or less. The response was larger than he expected, and this message was built almost entirely from what people sent in. Verse 17 closed the sermon with a challenge about what it means to live out what you know.

What was said

The assignment came out of verse 16, "For I am not ashamed of the gospel," and the observation that Paul had already referenced the gospel seven or eight times in the fifteen verses before that. Pastor Ray wanted to know whether the people in the room could say plainly what that word means, something along the lines of what C.S. Lewis actually wrote: if you cannot turn your faith into the common language, you do not understand it or you do not believe it.

The responses came in all week by text, by email, and on slips of paper. Pastor Ray organized them loosely the way Paul does in verse 16, starting with Old Testament roots and moving toward the New. Isaiah 30:15 showed up, "In repentance and rest is your salvation," and the Twenty-Third Psalm, and Oswald Chambers describing the gospel as "the reality of redemption in our Lord Jesus Christ," and single words like "Jesus" and "Truth," and two-word phrases like "But God."

He read through dozens of the submissions aloud. Some were compact and precise. Some leaned on atonement language. Some emphasized transformation and new life. Some carried the exclusivity of the gospel plainly: "The only way to become right with God." One came in as a child's made-up song. One arrived as a formal two-sentence theological statement with footnotes to John 6 and 1 Corinthians 15. The range was wide, but Pastor Ray noted that with one exception, from someone still working inside a works-based framework, every submission was pointing at the same thing.

The point of reading them all was not to catalog definitions. It was to show the room that they know this. The gospel was coming back to him from across the congregation in recognizable form, again and again, from people of different ages and backgrounds and levels of formal Bible knowledge.

Verse 17 then pressed further. The phrase "from faith to faith," or out of faith into faith, sits alongside the quotation from Habakkuk 2:4, "The righteous shall live by faith." Pastor Ray noted that the phrase "by faith" can grammatically attach in two directions: the righteous whose faith has made them right with God shall live, or the righteous whom God has declared righteous shall live it out by faith. He said both readings are true, and both are important.

That second reading is where the sermon landed. If the gospel is the power of God, and if it has genuinely changed someone, then the living out of it becomes the means by which God's righteousness is revealed from one person's faith into another person's faith. The congregation's job is not only to know the gospel but to make it visible. The closing question was direct: how will your life reveal God's righteousness this week.

Doing a Bible study?

Here is a guide we have prepared for you: the passages in order, questions for the group, and room to write.

  1. Pastor Ray shared responses from about sixty people on what the gospel is in ten words or less. Looking at what others submitted, what does the variety of answers tell us about how people come to understand the gospel differently based on their own backgrounds and experiences?
  2. The Isaiah 15 passage says 'in repentance and rest is your salvation' but then adds 'you would have none of it.' Where do you see that same resistance showing up today, either in yourself or in people around you?

0:00 Has been probably the most most interaction coming from y'all towards me that I've had since I've been here. Because I gave you an assignment, a homework assignment last week. And that was sort of impromptu. I'll just go ahead and say it. I I I told the first service, I'm going to stop saying this one's going be a little weird because they're all a little weird.
0:20 Romans one hundred sixteen and seventeen is the theme of this letter. I believe it's the theme of Romans but this sermon is sort of crowdsourced. Do all know what crowdsourcing is? Some of you do. Crowdsourcing is usually it's on the internet where they they reach out and have people either fund or give ideas or collaborate and work together.
0:39 So, this sermon is somewhat crowdsourced. I don't plan on doing it very often but I was surprised by the response and I wanted to share that back with you. So, the whole point, we'll go into this verse with scripture. I got up through 116 last week and I told you I was going to step on 17 this week. Get just those two verses and 16 says this, for I am not ashamed of the gospel.
1:04 Paul says this, for I'm not ashamed of the gospel. Now, by this point, he's already said, gospel or he's mentioned or referred to it seven or eight times and only 15 verses before this and he's got huge sections that talk about the gospel. For I'm not ashamed of the gospel and so when I hit that point last week, I just asked you, what is it? What is the gospel? And y'all responded big time.
1:27 For it's the power of God for salvation everyone who believes to the Jew first and also to the Greek. I took our old message of the cross slide that we had picked up in first Corinthians one hundred eighteen and nineteen and amended it a little bit. I put the message of the cross or the gospel to everyone who believes is the power of God for salvation or even unto salvation, unto being kind of a directional word. It points the way towards salvation. Now, the gospel is what saves us.
1:58 It's the message through which we are saved but the facts of it and our acceptance of it, all of that. You'll see more of that in a few minutes. I was trying to decide how to categorize your responses and there are a lot of different ways you can look at. I thought about, well, I could do gospel of peace, gospel, the kingdom gospel of this, gospel of that and then the more I thought about it, I said, well, Old Testament, New Testament, Paul says, to the Jew first and also to the Greek and so I thought I'd start there. Somebody sent in several sent in Old Testament passages or things that were strongly influenced by the Old Testament and one of em was in repentance and rest is your salvation.
2:35 In quietness and trust is your strength. Now, I did ask for the gospel in 10 words or less. It's slightly outside of that but there were a lot of them that were a lot longer. So, in repentance and rest is your salvation and quietness and trust is your strength. Now, this is an old testament passage from Isaiah thirty fifteen.
2:50 This is a thousand years, approximately a thousand years before the birth of Christ and I like that. It's Old Testament. In repentance and rest is your salvation and quietness and trust is your strength. The sad part about this is that the rest of the quote goes like this. This is what the sovereign lord, the holy one of Israel says and repentance and rest is your salvation.
3:08 He's a prophet, right? Forecasting and quietness and trust is your strength but you would have none of it. The God of the New Testament is the same God of Old Testament and he has been offering this. Now, they had to look forward to God's blessed Messiah the way we have to look back to him, okay? In repentance and rest is your salvation but you would have none of it.
3:30 Somebody else said, I typically, this is what I think. The first sentence of the twenty third Psalm and this one's lesson 10. The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want. Amen. I had somebody else who comes here in the summer but lives away in the winter and he got the Email from Jenny this week.
3:46 Now, I was unclear. This was not planned so I was unclear exactly how you were to turn these things in. Some people handed little slips of paper. Some people Emailed them. Some people text me.
3:55 In the middle of the night, we we were I I was getting a lot of stuff which is great. I don't sleep much. So, I love that. The Lord is my shepherd. I shall not want nine words.
4:04 So, the guy that I think was sending this from Florida said, hallelujah. Which I like. I like that. Oswald Chambers, when I sat down on Monday morning to read my morning devotional at my computer, home screen, my utmost first highest said, the gospel is the reality of redemption in our Lord Jesus Christ. I thought, that's great.
4:23 That's good. Last week, I tried to quote this or I said, I'm going to butcher it but this was the quote that I had seen attributed to CS Lewis. If you can't communicate something in a way anyone could understand, either you don't understand it or you don't believe it and that was a challenge for y'all. I kind threw it out there and a lot of y'all really thought about this assignment and you scribble through and work through it. What's funny is this was what I was trying to.
4:50 Come on up. That's good. Couple, they're still coming in. I was trying to quote this last week and told you that I would butcher it. What's funny is CS Lewis never said exactly that.
5:01 Somebody shortened it and made it simpler. Ain't that funny? So, that's not what he said. This is what he said. By trying to translate our doctrines into vulgar speech, meaning the common tongue.
5:11 We discover how much we understand them ourselves. Our failure to translate may sometimes be due to our ignorance of the vernacular, the common tongue. Much more often, it exposes the fact we don't know exactly what we mean. And then he said this, any fool can write learned language, you know, jargon, complicated stuff. Any fool can write learned language, the vernacular, that's the common is the real test.
5:33 If you can't turn your faith into the common language, then you don't understand it or you don't believe it. So, they conflagrated those two quotes and made them shorter which is funny to me. So, I thought I'd share that with y'all. I'm not ashamed of the gospel. So, what is it?
5:47 The homework assignment was 10 words or less and I said, you know, the ones I read last week were seven words or less and I said, if you can keep it into a sentence, go for it. Try to keep it into a sentence. There's grace. I just want to see what you have to say. Hit me with it, you know, and y'all did.
6:04 So, I said, shoot for the center of the gospel like your crosshairs. Try to hit it square, straight on the center. I knew that we'd have some people that were a little more dogmatic or a little more feeling based or maybe a little more supernatural, maybe natural but we're shooting for the center and with that, I thought this was a pretty good, fairly concise Wickliffe Bible Encyclopedia. The central truth of the gospel is that God has provided a way of salvation for men through and women too. Through the gift of his son to the world, He suffered as a sacrifice for sin.
6:36 He overcame death and now offers a share in his triumph to all who will accept it. The gospel is good news because it is a gift of God and not something that must be earned by penance or by self improvement. That's pretty good. I like that one. I I'm reading a book right now called The Last Sweet Mile and it's fantastic.
6:56 It's really good. It's about two brothers and one of them was dying of cancer and the other one wrote this book. It's beautiful and about four chapters in, he realizes that his brother, the missionary, all of his life that he's sharing with these people. He said, some people might read this book that don't know what the gospel is, what a missionary is, or exactly what it is. So, his definition was the gospel, the message concerning Jesus Christ and the kingdom of God, that non fiction story through which humanity is rescued from its brokenness and returned to intimacy with God.
7:26 Amen. That's good. Allen Levi, last week, mom. So, here's your sign. What's the gospel in 10 words or less?
7:34 Several of you just had one word. Jesus. Amen. Amen. One of you said, Jesus, man.
7:44 Jesus, man. He said it because that's all that he could say through tears for the first year that he was a Christian. He said, I don't know much more than that but Jesus saved me and he goes, what's what's up with you? He goes, Jesus, man. Seriously?
7:59 But God, this is another two worder that I heard from multiple people. It's referring to. Now, obviously, these people have some residual knowledge of scripture where, you know, Noah and his generation, they're in a very, very terrible state but God provides a way out or Ephesians two where it's, oh my goodness, we're dead in our trespasses and we are deservedly. So, going for a hopeless eternity but God. So, that's great but you have to have some residual biblical knowledge to understand what that means, of course.
8:30 I did ask for elevator conversation. That's what I had mentioned. So, it's something intriguing that might pull you into a conversation or might pull someone into a conversation but I also said, I want you to hit it as close as you can. It's about God's pretty good. Three words, Jesus offers rest.
8:46 Amen. Come on to me all you who labor and are weary heavy, weary, and heavy laden and I will give you rest. Jesus offers rest. Three words, salvation, forgiveness, relationship. Amen.
8:58 Amen. This is, I got a couple of these. This one, she sent a picture though and so this gal has obviously been working. She's she's working on the 10 word part of it and she's gone through lots of em but she ended up circling this one. At the cross, Jesus reconciled holy God and sinful man.
9:17 Amen. Her husband stole most of her work and came up with this. Jesus resurrection reconciles holy God and sinful people who believe. There's a distinction there which is great. Mankind is one thing but people who believe is what he thought.
9:32 I gotta I gotta call that out because it does make a difference. What you believe makes a difference. Faith in Jesus is enough to be forgiven and received. Amen. Amen.
9:41 They thought about it for a few minutes and then changed it to this. Faith in Jesus is enough to be forgiven and transformed and both of those are true. God's gift of reconciliation offered to humanity. Amen. This one was in a poetic format just like this on a little piece of paper.
10:00 God's love, his son, for redemption, our gift to heaven. Amen. That's beautiful. God's living words inspired and transposed in the human hands. Christ died so that we might live.
10:16 When you when I'm preaching and reading scripture, I love to have a so that in there. There's no question about it. When there's a so that and this one is born out by tons of scriptures but Christ died so that we might live. The only way to become right with God. Now, there's an exclusivity to the gospel.
10:32 It's the only way. The way, the truth, and life. The only way. No one comes to the father but by me, the only way. Wow.
10:38 In our society, that's a hard truth but it's the truth. The only way to become right with God. That does not say exactly what the gospel is but it does say it's exclusive. God's righteous wrath shall be averted pleading Christ's death alone. Amen.
10:55 10 words. That's a lot in 10 words. Choose God's grace through Jesus or default to God's punishment. I say that with a smile on my face because I know who wrote this and she's the sweetest lady and then she said, this maybe more appropriate for a Jude 23 rescue than an elevator conversation. Holding out the judgment of God.
11:19 Default to God's punishment which is what we default to. I mean, that's our that's where we all start, right? Jude 23 says, save others, snatching them out of the fire. The truth about God's plan of salvation for believers. Amen.
11:34 Another one from Allen Levi. It's actually in the book too. Somebody else sent it in because he's reading the same book. Being deeply flawed and conscious of it but being deeply forgiven and conscious of that too. Amen.
11:48 Acceptance of undeserved blessings and atonement for yesterday, today, and forever and he thought we wouldn't notice that the ampersand is a word. That's 11. Christ's perfect life, sacrificial death, and glorious resurrection affords opportunity for a positive eternity for all who are willing to accept it. It's a little wordy but it's true. It's got a lot of the essential elements in there.
12:14 Peace with God on his terms. I like this one. Peace with God on his terms. Unconditional surrender is required. Individuals can have peace with God through Jesus's atoning death.
12:29 It's funny. I I mentioned this in the first service. So, yesterday, I was walking in here to print out a wedding script before I went to marry a couple and as I wandered in, somebody pulled up on the curb out there just kind of slid into the spot and said, hey, I said, hey, and we're friends. I've known him before and he said, hey, I've been studying Matthew. I'm trying to go through Matthew and kind of just block it out and know in my mind, chapter one is this, chapter two is that, chapter three is that.
12:54 He said, I'm got, I've gotten pretty well into it and I'm not memorizing it word for word but really pretty close. Concept for concept. He said, and I got to something the other day that kind of threw me. I got to the place where Jesus had only called three of his disciples and the word gospel shows up. I'm like, the crucifixion hadn't happened yet and it he says, gospel and I'm like, that rap, it it it twisted my mind for a minute and I said, what does he mean gospel at this point?
13:20 You know, because he's speaking to him and he said gospel. And it's good news but he said, what's the gospel? I said, peace with God. He said, oh, cool. Thanks and he pulled off.
13:33 I've been studying this stuff all week. Y'all been sending me all this stuff. There's a lot about peace with God in here. Individuals can have peace with God through Jesus atoning death. They had to look for it just like we have to look back to it.
13:45 Salvation is by faith alone in Christ alone. The one God would provide. His anointed one. Just relax. I love this one because this one, this person comes from a background of a works religion and she recognizes it and she says, salvation is by faith alone and Christ alone and despite my tendency to want to do something to earn it, just relax.
14:10 That's great. Cleanse by God through faith in Jesus. Amen. Christ lived, loved, died, and rose for our salvation. Amen.
14:21 Y'all are good. Y'all are really good preachers. Jesus perfect life for our imperfect ones. That's Carl's. He often goes into a prayer with that.
14:30 Jesus perfect life in exchange for our imperfect ones. God imputes his righteousness into us and took our sin upon himself. Jesus. Wow. Jesus Christ gave his life to save ours from sin.
14:46 God's message of love and forgiveness available in Christ. Since it's nine words, alone. The exclusivity is there. Jesus loves ragamuffins. That to save them and empowers them.
15:03 Amen. Something of the empowerment and the transformation is is in intrinsic and inherent in the gospel and if somebody's asking you, what's the Christian message is and they're they want to ask you, they've probably seen some transformation or empowerment in your life from God. Lord and savior, Christ is God. He died to redeem our sins. Actually, some of y'all took took my charge to give it to me on a piece of paper and here they are.
15:31 God's son is the path, God's grace. God's son, the path to grace saves us from ourselves. Gospel, God's words, love, and forgiveness. Gospel, God's word of the good news of salvation. Romans one sixteen, the gospel of Christ, the power of God, unto or towards salvation.
15:55 The gospel is the promised good news that lets us grow closer to our father's heart. Good news, God loves you. Ask me how. I like that one. Say sorry for sins, believe Jesus is lord, saved.
16:13 Jesus, saving sinners since AD thirty. Actually, that's a theological hole right there but yeah, everyone who has ever come will come by the death of Jesus. Every single soul forever, all the way back. Move Jesus from your mind to your heart. Be saved.
16:38 And this one, if I remember the tune correctly, this lady said that her kids and this is musical. It doesn't fit the 10 word thing and I know it but Jesus is my savior and I'm free because he died for me that day on Calvary that was when he washed away my sins and saved me for eternity they made that up that's not one of the verses of that song That's pretty cool. The good news is God loves me. Jesus saves me and everything's okay. Amen.
17:10 Power of God for salvation to all who believe. God's gift of salvation to believers in Christ. God's love through Christ brings new life. Jesus took the hit so believers are made fit for heaven. Amen.
17:29 Jesus took the hit so that believers are made fit for heaven. I like that. She did a 10 word and a 12 word. There was a lot of that by the way too. There were a lot of people that were sending me stuff and then amending, changing slightly.
17:42 Are you getting the point of this? Y'all know the gospel. All y'all know the gospel. I didn't have, I only had a, I had four. All from the same person.
17:50 Their background, they, I didn't use them. I have not used them up here. Their background came out and they're still in a workspace religion. Breaks my heart. The gospel is not something man does rather it's something that God has done for us.
18:10 The message of eternal life through the cross. God's love through Jesus redeemed us from our sin to eternal life with him. He doubled up. He's up there twice. God's love never ends.
18:22 Jesus died. So, believers won't perish. Amen. Jesus, father's final sacrifice Sounds like Hebrews, doesn't it? Making dead alive, empowering through humility.
18:37 Because of his love for us and through the gift of his son, Jesus Christ, God, has bound us together with himself for eternity. One sentence, Jesus, his birth, life, crucifixion, and ascension. That's the gospel. Jesus, he died on the cross for my sins even though I constantly fall short. That was in the middle of a paragraph.
19:00 He had a lot before that and a lot after that but that convinced the thought down to just over to. I was dead now alive, lost, but now found. That's actually paraphrasing Luke 15 but more from a personal perspective. God establishes moral reasoning, righteousness, and is attained. God establishes moral reasoning.
19:19 Righteousness is attained by God's redemption. Amen. It is his work. He started it. We caused the problem but he solved it.
19:27 I got a lot of acrostics this week too. My mom loves acrostics. She sent in two of these. Gospel. God offers a savior to all providing believers eternal life.
19:38 God's only son provides eternal life. Grace offered the sacrifice promised eternal love. Amen. God's riches at Christ expense. Amen.
19:53 Sin condemns hopeless mankind. God lovingly redeems all who believe. Amen. Amen. This is missus Italic.
20:01 She's sending me these three. Jesus, God offers righteousness. Jesus, God offers his righteousness, redeeming us from sins, condemnation. Sin, the condemning debt we all carry could only be paid by God through Jesus who freely offers eternal life and transformation to all who believe. It's a real invitation.
20:22 It's really out there. Promise for a beautiful eternity with our savior. Justified by faith in Christ, people have peace with God. I like this one. War is over if you want it.
20:39 Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, and self control. Now, this one, I asked and this is only non anonymous one I think. There's some of them are semi anonymous if you know the people but I asked Pascal on the way into breakfast the other morning. We came in and ate breakfast together and I said, Pascal, what's the gospel in 10 words or less? And she said, love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, and self control.
21:04 I said, what were you doing? Were you counting? She said, I wanted to know whether to leave and in there or not. Pretty good. I said, but you know, that's not the gospel, right?
21:14 She goes, no, that's kind of the way it works out. I said, right. So, what's the gospel? I'm going to cry again. Dog on it.
21:21 Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be safe. I wanna works. I wanna works. That is Acts sixteen thirty one. Philippian jailer asked Paul and Silas, what must I do to be saved?
21:35 Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be saved. I like this one too. Damnable as mankind is. God in Christ provides a way out. Through Christ's undeserved death, God forgives sins of anyone willing.
21:53 Consenting to his undeserved death for those he loves. Christ obeyed. God is good. He really loves you. Accept that truth.
22:03 Amen. Now, the the that truth is the gospel. That's what I was looking for but this is really really good. Certainly draws one in. God is good.
22:11 He really loves you. Accept that truth. Whole message of the Bible right there. I like that one. I saw this picture this week.
22:18 God is good. He really loves you. Accept that truth. Pronunciation on this one is a little rough. Jesus Christ, the perfect sacrifice for the sins of all who believe in him, amen.
22:38 Amen. It's international. Pay the penalty for every acknowledged sin Christ died. I got a question. That was an interesting one.
22:48 Since Jesus paid for me, shouldn't I give my all? Jesus paid it forward. Are you thankful? I can hear the voices of everyone of these. The love of God expressed through Christ for my eternity and he said, that one's my favorite.
23:03 Mine too. Since Jesus paid for me, shouldn't I owe him everything? That was another twist on one of the early ones he just said. I love this. This song has come up in my head over and over this week.
23:15 The vilest offender that true or who truly believes that moment from Jesus a pardon receives. That's the gospel right there. Jesus offers rest. I forgot to delete the first one but that's really really a good promise. Jesus offers rest.
23:33 Christ died for our sins, buried, raised, and seen. Now, if you know, Corinthians, first Corinthians, you'll recognize that. She said, if you give me more more words, I'd say this, the gospel by which you're saved, Christ died for our sins. He was buried. That's proof he died.
23:47 He was he rose again. He was seen and that's proof he lives which is first Corinthians fifteen three through five. Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures and that he was buried and then he was raised on the third day according to scriptures and that he appeared to see fit into the 12. Truth, another one worder, truth. Now, that requires some residual biblical knowledge too obviously and this person does believe the actual gospel that these all are other ones are trying to state but what I liked about this one the best is the rest of the note.
24:22 Hi, Ray. I've been thinking about this all day. Praise God and with all the turmoil, the dishonesty, the fear, and the evil, only one word speaks to me, truth because it's true. There's a tribe in in Wickliffe Bible Translators History where they say they were translating the New Testament, translating the New Testament, and they kept on and they were making some inroads and people are listening to the stories. It's a storytelling society.
24:48 They're listening to the stories and then they got to the genealogies in Matthew which is not something that the translator was all that happy about translating but he translated the genealogies from Matthew at the very beginning, the part we usually skip and he said then those people said, this is true? He said, yeah. He goes, eat towel. That was the that was the phrase in their language. Eat towel.
25:13 It's true. Truth. The fact that this gospel, this good news is true makes it all the difference. And so truth. Shooting for the center right there.
25:22 It is true. We're shooting for the center of what it is. This one's fun. I love this one. I got this and he said, after the service last week, I said, some of these are semi anonymous.
25:34 He said last week, I can't do it. I said, I know you can't. I'm going to read the the whole thing as I got it. A compact statement of the gospel of Jesus Christ. This is before we get to this.
25:44 The purpose of this exercise is to state the essential components of the gospel with brevity and clarity. To that end, it would be stated in the second person as if presenting to an unbeliever. It should be noted that this is an exercise only. It should not simply be regurgitated to any unbeliever as written below. Good.
26:02 Amen. The gospel here is stated in terms of God's eternal plan and provision to reconcile any unbelieving human being to himself. The unbelievers volitional responsibility to accept or reject it and the forensic promise to the new believer. In spite of the fact that the gospel is the seed of the word of God and that Jesus Christ is the priority and sovereignty of all creation. A clear and concise definition of the gospel in scripture seems elusive.
26:29 Most agree that the gospels embedded throughout the whole Bible but for the exercise, two scriptural guideposts were used. John six three sixteen through twenty one and first Corinthians fifteen three through eight which we just saw and then he goes into these two different ways of looking it and each of them are one sentence people. Whatever you're thinking, they're each one sentence. They fit the rules. Man's salvation, the forensic gospel.
26:51 God's plan and provision. Jesus Christ is the incarnate son of God. He died on the cross in your place and became the righteous payment, a ransom, you cannot pay. For your unrighteousness which is condemning you before God. Furthermore, semicolon, furthermore, Christ was buried, resurrected, witnessed by many, and ascended to heaven where he currently intercedes on your behalf.
27:11 Amen. So, your responsibility looking at it from that way. If you choose to believe and trust in these promise provisions, then God promises your removal from condemnation and you will immediately possess an eternal new life. Amen. Amen.
27:25 That's good stuff and I love this because he didn't hit the 10 words there but he hit it here. Clarity and accuracy trumps brevity. Amen. That was in the Email he sent it to me. So, that's fantastic.
27:38 First John five twelve is pretty simple. He who has the son has life. He who does not have the son does not have life. And then John three sixteen, I had several of you sent that. One of you sent it and said, John thirteen sixteen, but I think you meant three sixteen.
27:51 After I looked up thirteen sixteen, for God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. Amen. God is good. So, we get to verse 17. Now, 16, y'all helped me with all of that.
28:08 What is the gospel? You've told me. It's been coming at me pretty steady all week but I want to go through 17 for in it, for in the gospel, the righteousness of God, I want you to think about this. In the gospel, God's righteousness is revealed. From faith to faith is literally out of faith into faith, out of faith into faith, and volumes have been written in commentaries about what that means.
28:35 Out of faith into faith. As it is written, but the righteous man shall live by faith. So, looking at this, I'm going to lay it out there in the word order that's in Greek because it makes a difference in this case. And we'll go with the English here. Just as it has been written.
28:53 So, it's pointing to scripture. The quotes actually from Habakkuk two four, one of the minor prophets. Very, very dark book. There's one silver lining in that book and this is it. The righteous shall live by faith or but the righteous by faith shall live.
29:08 The Ephesians right there is by faith. Actually, I've got little circles by faith. And that can go either way. Now, a lot of times when we have splits in church history that are unresolved, a lot of em come back to a disagreement or an over emphasis on one side or the other of a particular divide and this is one of those. Remember, I'm I mentioned the priority of proclamation and the social gospel.
29:37 It kind of comes down to this. It's come down to two or three different verses but this is one. The righteous by faith shall live. Now, that by faith can go with the righteous by faith. Does that mean, do you get that?
29:50 That's what Martin Luther read and that is the truth. Absolutely. There's no doubt about it. It's all over the Bible. It's backed up in a thousand different ways.
29:57 The righteous by faith, the ones whose faith has made them right with God. Shall live and that's the eternal life that a lot of y'all are forecasting in your gospel statements. The righteous by faith shall live. Starting from this moment of acceptance and onward, eternal abundant life. The righteous by faith shall live but it can also go this way.
30:20 But the righteous who God has declared to be righteous, we know how because we know the gospel. Shall live by faith or by faith shall live. Does that make sense? Are you with me? I'm seeing some confused looks.
30:33 It can be either way. Either the ones that righteous, their righteousness has come from God by their faith. They shall live eternally, whatever but the other way to look at this is the ones who God declares righteous by their faith shall live it out. Amen. Okay?
30:49 So, the homework assignment for this week and I'm taking that. I know that we're justified by faith and that's the normal way that we would preach this but I want you to think about that. That if I know the gospel and if it made a difference in my life and I've been transformed and it's the power of God within me and that the gospel itself is the power of God for others to come to it, then, you're living it out is what? Let's see where this goes. Reveals the righteousness of God out of your faith into someone else's faith.
31:19 Are you with me? It's it's kind of revolutionary if you think about it. For in the gospel, God's righteousness is revealed from out of faith into faith. The way that he passes us along is one person to another person, one family to another family, community to another community but each individual has to accept it. The righteous one shall live by faith.
31:48 So, here, go through all that again. How will you live out the gospel? Consider that and I I was really impressed with how many of you got back with me this week. I think I had about sixty, sixty something responses. I don't know how many scraps of paper up here but that's pretty doggone good percentage and I didn't have except for the one that I mentioned from a different faith tradition completely.
32:10 I didn't have any that I didn't think. That's it. Amen. So, y'all know this stuff. Let's live it out.
32:16 How we're to live out the gospel this week and how will your life reveal God's righteousness? Consider that and I think that's the last slide. Oh, this is one. You know, let go and let God. I added attack this one on in the beginning.
32:29 I got this one early this morning. Let go and let God is a little trite and it's a little bumper sticker E, okay? Let go and let God. It's good if you understand it but most people don't know how to do that. How am I supposed to let go of whatever it is that's bothering me?
32:44 I I think this is very helpful though. Letting go of your sin lets God forgive it. He's made a way. He's made the way to deal with sin accepting that is letting it go. Repentance.
32:56 Repentance and rest. Amen. And that maybe it. Jesus is lord of all.
