What does First B Jackson teach about holy living?

Drawn from the messages where it was actually addressed: the words said from the front, the passages taught, and where to hear the whole thing.

At First Baptist Jackson, the teaching on holy living is rooted in the question Peter asks directly in 2 Peter 3: since everything in this world will be destroyed, what kind of people ought we to be? Both Pastor Scott and Pastor Jason spent real time on this in their messages from 2 Peter 3, and both landed in the same place. The answer is already in the passage. Believers ought to live holy and godly lives, investing now in what will last rather than in what the fire of that day will consume.

A large part of what shapes that call is understanding why God has not yet brought judgment. His patience is not slowness or indifference. He is holding the door open, wanting everyone to come to repentance. But that patience has a limit, and the day of the Lord will arrive suddenly, the way a thief arrives, the way labor pains come without escape. The urgency of that picture is meant to press believers toward lives that reflect what they say they believe. Minimizing sin, measuring yourself against someone worse, is the natural move, but as Pastor Jason pointed out, any guilt is enough guilt to be separating a person from God.

The teaching from 1 Corinthians 3 came into both messages as a practical frame. The foundation is Christ and nothing else qualifies, but how a believer builds on that foundation matters. Work that is gospel-driven will survive the fire of that final day. Work that is not, described in the passage as wood, hay, and stubble, will be burned up. A person can be saved and still have built in a way that was ineffective or unproductive for God's kingdom. Holy living, then, is not about earning salvation. It is about building well on the foundation that has already been laid.

Taught from 2 Peter 3:9 · 2 Peter 3:11-12 · 1 Corinthians 3:10-15 · 1 Thessalonians 5:2-3 · 2 Peter 3:14

The passage taught · 1 Corinthians 3:10-15

10 According to the grace of God which was given to me, as a wise master builder I laid a foundation, and another builds on it. But let each man be careful how he builds on it.

11 For no one can lay any other foundation than that which has been laid, which is Jesus Christ.

12 But if anyone builds on the foundation with gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay, or stubble;

13 each man’s work will be revealed. For the Day will declare it, because it is revealed in fire; and the fire itself will test what sort of work each man’s work is.
