What does First B Jackson teach about marriage roles?

Drawn from the messages where it was actually addressed: the words said from the front, the passages taught, and where to hear the whole thing.

At First B Jackson, the teaching on marriage roles starts with identity before it touches behavior. In both the Ephesians 5 series and the Colossians 3 message, the preachers were careful to lay out who Paul is actually addressing before unpacking what he asks of them. The commands to wives and husbands are not addressed to women and men in general. Marriage is a voluntary act, and what follows applies specifically to the people in it. Without that grounding in what God has already declared about the people he is speaking to, the instructions can sound like a wagging finger.

The hinge on which the whole marriage section in Ephesians 5 turns is mutual submission in the fear of Christ, and Pastor Mike and Pastor Van both spent real time on that grammar. The verb form in verse 21, subjecting yourselves to one another, governs everything that follows. For wives, that verb is carried forward from verse 21 rather than restated, which the teaching described as more gentle in tone. For husbands, the instruction runs longer and the standard is higher: love your wives the way Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her. Pastor Scott, working through Colossians, put it plainly by saying he would have started with the husband's command because he finds it harder. When a husband is actually loving his wife with the self-giving love Paul describes, he said, it is not difficult for the rest of the family to fall in line.

The congregation was also told honestly that committed Christians land in two different places on how these texts distribute authority in marriage. Complementarians hold that husbands carry primary responsibility in the home while wives and husbands share equal value. Egalitarians hold that the gospel removes gender-based hierarchy and that mutual submission is the whole structure. The preachers named both views, noted that Bible translation choices about section headings already reflect which camp a translator leans toward, and asked for grace on all sides. What neither view is permitted to do, given the shape of these sermons, is ignore the cost the text places on the husband: a love modeled on Christ laying down his life.

The passage taught · 1 Timothy 2

1 I exhort therefore, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercessions, and givings of thanks, be made for all men:

2 for kings and all who are in high places; that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and reverence.

3 For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior;

4 who desires all people to be saved and come to full knowledge of the truth.
