What does First B Jackson teach about melchizedek?

Drawn from the messages where it was actually addressed: the words said from the front, the passages taught, and where to hear the whole thing.

At First Baptist Jackson, the teaching on Melchizedek starts with a discipline: stay inside what the text actually says and resist the pull to go further. Pastor Alex, Pastor Ray, and Pastor Mark have all worked through Genesis 14, Psalm 110:4, and Hebrews 7 as part of a sustained study of Hebrews, and each of them kept returning to the same warning. Where biblical evidence is thin and felt need is high, speculation moves quickly and heresy follows close behind. Melchizedek is exactly that kind of territory, which is why the teaching keeps pressing the congregation back to the text itself.

What the text does say is striking enough on its own. The name Melchizedek means king of righteousness, and Salem means peace, making him king of peace as well. More important for the original readers of Hebrews, his name appears nowhere in any genealogy. The writer of Hebrews is not claiming he had no parents; he is pointing to an absence in the record. No birth, no death, no lineage. For a Jewish audience whose entire religious identity was organized around Abraham, the twelve tribes, and the Levitical priesthood, that absence carried real weight. Abraham himself, the patriarch at the root of everything, paid tithes to Melchizedek and received a blessing from him. Without any dispute, the one doing the blessing is greater than the one being blessed.

The point the writer of Hebrews is building toward is that the Levitical system was always temporary, always pointing somewhere else. God swore an oath recorded in Psalm 110:4, roughly a thousand years after Abraham met Melchizedek, that a priest would come forever according to that older order. Jesus, descended from Judah rather than Levi, holds his priesthood not on the basis of physical lineage but according to the power of an indestructible life. Pastor Mark put it plainly: knowing the rule does not make you keep the rule, and that is the weakness of the law. It was never designed to make anyone perfect. It was designed to point toward the one who is.
