What does First B Jackson teach about paying taxes?
Drawn from the messages where it was actually addressed: the words said from the front, the passages taught, and where to hear the whole thing.
At First B Jackson, the teaching on paying taxes comes out of Mark 12, where Jesus is handed a question designed to trap him. The religious leaders wanted him to either alienate his own people by endorsing the Roman tax or face a treason charge by refusing it. Jesus asks for a coin, notes whose image is stamped on it, and answers that people should give to Caesar what is Caesar's and give to God what is God's.
The preacher treated this not as a standalone political statement but as a connected piece of the larger confrontation happening that week. The weight of the answer, as the message presented it, falls on the second half: giving God what belongs to God. The coin bears Caesar's image, so it goes back to Caesar. Human beings bear the image of God, pressed into them at creation, and that is what belongs to God. The tax question turns out to be less about coins and more about where a person's deepest allegiance actually rests.
The earlier message on Romans 13 fills out the same territory from a different angle. There the teaching worked through Paul's argument that governing authorities have been established by God, and that Christians are called to submit to civil government as part of the same life of faithful obedience Paul has been describing across the whole letter. The limit the message drew was clear: submit until the civil authority directly contradicts God's law, and even then, the example set by Daniel, by Peter and John, and by Jesus before Pilate was non-violent, conscience-driven obedience to the higher authority while accepting whatever consequences the earthly government imposed.
