What does First B Jackson teach about unanswered prayer?
Drawn from the messages where it was actually addressed: the words said from the front, the passages taught, and where to hear the whole thing.
At First B Jackson, the teaching on unanswered prayer starts not with an explanation but with an honest admission. Pastor Brad Yates opened his message on John 14 by acknowledging the question most people carry quietly: if God is going to do what He is going to do anyway, why pray at all? He was upfront that there is no formula to get God to act on our timeline. The real reframe he offered was this: the purpose of prayer is not to get God to satisfy our desires immediately, but to get more of God himself. The greatest thing God gives in prayer is his own presence, not health or money or comfort. Weakness and dependence, rather than being problems to overcome, are actually the goal, which is what 2 Corinthians 12:9 points to.
The teaching also pressed hard on what it actually means to pray "in Jesus' name." Brad argued that phrase is not a closing tagline or a Christian asterisk tacked onto the end of a request. In the ancient world, acting in someone's name meant acting by their authority, in their manner, and for their benefit. To pray in Jesus's name is to pray in accordance with who Jesus is as a whole person, which means praying in line with what he came to do: display the wisdom and love of God, reconcile sinners, and restore the kingdom. That is a much bigger claim than most people make when they use the phrase.
On the specific question of why prayers go unanswered, Brad offered a reframe rather than a dodge: God always gives us what we would ask for if we knew everything He knows and had His perspective. He also named his own prayer habits honestly, describing a rushed morning checklist and quick requests offered on the fly throughout the day. Those are not wrong, he said, but they are snacks, not a meal. A John Piper quote stayed on the screen by design: our prayerlessness is not from a lack of time, it is from a lack of conviction.
