What does First B Jackson teach about worry vs prayer?
Drawn from the messages where it was actually addressed: the words said from the front, the passages taught, and where to hear the whole thing.
At First Baptist Jackson, the teaching on worry and prayer starts with a simple and direct contrast. Pastor Carl, preaching from Philippians 4:1-9, laid out what Paul is asking of people who are anxious or in conflict: pray first, right when the worry surfaces, rather than defaulting to worry and coming to prayer later. He read a poem from Ray's family's fridge that put the contrast plainly, and he connected it to Jesus's own question in Matthew 6, asking whether worrying can add a single moment to your life. Paul wrote those instructions from jail, not knowing whether he would live, which makes the call to rejoice and give thanks all the more striking.
The instruction Paul gives is not just to stop worrying but to replace it with something specific: prayer, combined with thankfulness for what God has already done. Pastor Carl noted that gratitude is not dependent on circumstances, and that being genuinely aware of God's grace makes it easier to extend grace to others. The result Paul promises in verse seven is a peace that exceeds anything we can understand, one that guards the heart and mind against the anger, bitterness, and desire for revenge that can quietly take up residence in a person during hard seasons.
This same thread runs through the Colossians series as well. Pastor Josh, working through Colossians 1, pressed on the line that in Christ all things hold together, and observed that the One holding things together is the same One we are invited to bring our worry to. As Pastor Carl put it, drawing on the same truth from a different angle, "You can worry or you can pray but you can't do both."
