Faith and Endurance

A study guide · March 15, 2022 · James

Watch or read it

In one paragraph

Pastor Carl opened the first study in the book of James by connecting it directly to what the congregation had just finished in John: if John is about belief, James is about what belief looks like in action. The session covered James 1:1-12 under the heading of faith and endurance, and the evening included congregational sharing and worship alongside the teaching. John, the book the group had been...

Read together

Talk about it

  1. Pastor Carl described the book of James as 'the gospel in work clothes,' meaning that genuine faith in Jesus produces real change in how we live. Where have you seen that connection between belief and action play out in your own life?
  2. James tells his readers to consider their troubles 'an opportunity for great joy.' Pastor Carl admitted that his natural tendency is to ask God 'why' when trouble comes, but suggested a better question is 'what, God what do you want to do with this?' How does shifting from 'why' to 'what' change the way you face a difficult situation?
  3. Verse five promises that if we ask God for wisdom, He will give it generously and without rebuking us. Pastor Carl said he has sometimes been in a mode of 'I'll figure it out' rather than truly asking for wisdom from God. What makes it hard to actually stop and ask, and what has helped you do it?
  4. James says that believers who are poor have something to boast about because God has honored them, while the rich should boast that God has humbled them. One person in the group shared that having more money started to 'own' him and became a crutch. How have you seen wealth or security, even in small amounts, compete with trust in God?
  5. Verse 12 promises that God blesses those who patiently endure testing, and that they will receive the crown of life. The story of Professor Dave Cashin was shared as an example of someone who stayed through severe suffering and saw his ministry transformed because of it. Can you think of a time when enduring a trial, rather than escaping it, produced something in you or in someone else that would not have come any other way?
