What does First B Jackson teach about pride?

Drawn from the messages where it was actually addressed: the words said from the front, the passages taught, and where to hear the whole thing.

At First B Jackson, the teaching on pride keeps returning to a single conviction drawn from both Peter and James: God opposes the proud and gives grace to the humble. That is not a gentle warning. Pastor Carl, preaching through Obadiah, pressed the point by showing what it looked like on a national scale. Edom had wealth, strong alliances, and homes built high in the rock, and all of that security had produced arrogance. Their attitude was "Who will bring me down to earth?" God's answer through Obadiah was direct: I will. The same principle that brought down a nation applies to anyone who builds their confidence on what they have rather than on who God is.

Pastor Ray, working through 1 Corinthians 4, traced pride to a failure of basic accounting. Everything a person has, the ability to lead, to speak, to work, to give, came from somewhere outside themselves. The passage's central question is "What do you have that you did not receive?" and the honest answer leaves nothing to boast about. Pastor John, in 1 Corinthians 5, made the uncomfortable observation that the congregation's pride could be just as serious as the individual sin Paul was addressing. The church at Corinth was puffed up when it should have been mourning, and Paul treats that corporate pride as the quieter, harder-to-see version of the same problem.

The consistent remedy the teaching offers is humility understood not as low self-esteem but as an accurate view of reality, one that keeps God's hand over everything. Pastor Nathan and Pastor Brian both worked through 1 Peter 5 and landed on the same imperative: humble yourselves, which is a command, not a suggestion, and one that carries the weight of Peter's own personal history with pride. Casting anxiety on God is presented as the practice that keeps humility from being merely theoretical. The point is not to think less of yourself but to stop pulling back what you have already handed over.

Taught from Obadiah 1 · 1 Peter 5:6-11 · 1 Corinthians 4:1-21 · 1 Corinthians 5:1-13 · James 4:6-10

The passage taught · 1 Peter 5:6-11

6 Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time;

7 casting all your worries on him, because he cares for you.

8 Be sober and self-controlled. Be watchful. Your adversary, the devil, walks around like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.

9 Withstand him steadfast in your faith, knowing that your brothers who are in the world are undergoing the same sufferings.
