What does First B Jackson teach about contentment?
Drawn from the messages where it was actually addressed: the words said from the front, the passages taught, and where to hear the whole thing.
At First B Jackson, the teaching on contentment starts with a simple but arresting observation: it is not a spiritual gift handed out at conversion. It is something learned. Pastor Ray McDaniel, working through Philippians 4, returned to this point more than once, pressing on the word Paul himself uses: "I have learned to be content." That word means the rest of us can learn it too, and it means the path runs through real experience, not just through understanding it. The contentment Paul describes was not formed in comfortable circumstances. It was formed through beatings, shipwrecks, hunger, and prison, which is what gives his quiet words in Philippians 4 their actual weight.
The messages at First B have also been honest that contentment has two schools, and both are hard. In the school of poverty, the temptation is anxiety and the constant pull toward what others have. But poverty also strips away distraction and makes dependence on God unmistakably clear. In the school of plenty, the dangers are less obvious. Comfort quietly suggests that God is less necessary, and worldly distraction pulls attention away from Him rather than toward Him. Pastor Van Jones was candid about his own experience of this drift. The deeper problem, as he put it, is that our joy gets attached to secondary things. He named it plainly: "My joy is coming from all these things. But in reality, the truth is those things are a secondary joy."
The famous verse that gets pulled from this passage, "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me," has been taught at First B consistently in its actual context. Ray and Pastor Van have both pushed back on the reading that makes it a promise of superhuman achievement. In the passage, the "all things" points directly to enduring both abundance and need with a settled trust in God. That is the crown Paul is describing, and as Ray noted by way of Shakespeare, it is a crown that seldom kings enjoy. The promise underneath it is not that circumstances will improve but that God will supply what is actually needed, from a wealth that does not operate out of scarcity.

“The rare jewel of Christian contentment: that sweet, inward, quiet, gracious frame of spirit that freely submits to and delights in God's wise and fatherly disposal in every condition.”

The passage taught · 1 Thessalonians 5
1 But concerning the times and the seasons, brothers, you have no need that anything be written to you.
2 For you yourselves know well that the day of the Lord comes like a thief in the night.
3 For when they are saying, “Peace and safety,” then sudden destruction will come on them, like birth pains on a pregnant woman; and they will in no way escape.
4 But you, brothers, aren’t in darkness, that the day should overtake you like a thief.
