What does First B Jackson teach about mother's day?

Drawn from the messages where it was actually addressed: the words said from the front, the passages taught, and where to hear the whole thing.

At First B Jackson, the teaching on Mother's Day consistently holds two things together: genuine gratitude for the gift of a mother's instruction, and honest pastoral care for the people in the room for whom that day is complicated or painful. Pastor Ray has returned to this tension repeatedly over the years. He has acknowledged from the pulpit that Mother's Day lands differently depending on what someone carries into the room, whether they lost a mother, whether they had a mother worth honoring, or whether they are a mother who lost a child. The tone is never sentimental, and the teaching never pretends the day is simple.

The biblical anchor that comes up most often is the fifth commandment, honor your father and your mother, read through Exodus 20, restated in Deuteronomy, and taken up again by Paul in Ephesians 6 and by Jesus himself in Matthew 15. Pastor Ray has made the point that this commandment sits at the hinge of the Ten Commandments, bridging the commands about relating to God and the commands about relating to other people, and that it is the first commandment to carry an explicit promise. Jesus' confrontation with the Pharisees over the Corban loophole is treated as a serious warning: using religious language or practice to escape the concrete obligation to honor a parent is exactly what Jesus called making void the word of God. The teaching does not soften that, but it also does not leave people without a path forward. For those whose mother made honoring her hard, forgiveness is named as the hinge between that difficulty and the life God calls us to.

The wisdom literature of Proverbs has also shaped how this church has thought about mothers and their instruction. Pastor Ray has walked through Proverbs 1, 2, and 3 on Mother's Day, reading the call to receive correction, search for wisdom like hidden treasure, and trust the Lord with all your heart as things that echo what a faithful mother passes down. He connected a personal memory, his own mother quietly rebuking him for mocking someone's broken English, to Proverbs' description of a parent's correction as a crown of grace. The through-line across all of these messages is that wisdom pursued and received, from God, from Scripture, and from the people God placed in our lives to teach us, is itself a gift, and that resisting it has real consequences, while receiving it leads somewhere good.

11 All chastening seems for the present to be not joyous but grievous; yet afterward it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been exercised thereby.
