What does First B Jackson teach about spiritual gifts?

Drawn from the messages where it was actually addressed: the words said from the front, the passages taught, and where to hear the whole thing.

At First B Jackson, the teaching on spiritual gifts starts with a conviction that every believer has received one. Not some, not the specially qualified. As 1 Peter 4:10 puts it, each one has already been given something, and the question is simply what you do with it. That conviction runs through messages from Pastor Ray, Pastor Josh, and Pastor Mark alike, and it shapes how First B thinks about the body as a whole.

The gifts themselves are not trophies or achievements but things God has wired into different people for the sake of the whole body. Pastor Josh, working through Ephesians 4:12, pressed on the Greek word behind 'equipping,' which carries the sense of fine-tuning or exact adjustment, the kind of small careful correction you make on a precision instrument. The point was that the Spirit already knows how each person is built, and equipping is fitted to that person, not pressed into a single mold. The goal of all of it is building up the body of Christ, a construction term that pictures raising a structure fit to be a home. First Corinthians 12 gets brought in regularly here, with its image of the body having many parts, none of which can be written off as unnecessary, and its reminder that what happens to one part registers everywhere else.

The practical weight the teaching keeps returning to is that gifts are meant to be used. Pastor Ray, preaching from 1 Peter 4, told a vivid story about 70 pounds of green bananas given to him as a genuine gift by people who had very little, which he hung in his backyard and then forgot, until he heard them dropping off the bunch one by one, fully rotted. The waste of something that had been a real gift was the point. Romans 12 gets taught with the same insistence: whatever God has gifted you to do, be doing it, and do it without pretending. Pastor Ray put it plainly in one message on Romans 12 that not everyone should be visiting people in the hospital, and not everyone should be preparing the meal. The gifts listed across Romans 12, 1 Corinthians 12, and Ephesians 4 are not interchangeable, and recognizing your own particular fit is part of faithful membership in the body.

The passage taught · 1 Corinthians 12:1-11

1 Now concerning spiritual things, brothers, I don’t want you to be ignorant.

2 You know that when you were heathen, you were led away to those mute idols, however you might be led.

3 Therefore I make known to you that no man speaking by God’s Spirit says, “Jesus is accursed.” No one can say, “Jesus is Lord,” but by the Holy Spirit.

4 Now there are various kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit.
