What does First B Jackson teach about humility?

Drawn from the messages where it was actually addressed: the words said from the front, the passages taught, and where to hear the whole thing.

At First B Jackson, the teaching on humility starts with a question about why we reach for more. In John Hammond's message from Philippians 2:5-11, he pressed on the hunger for glory that shows up everywhere, whether as a longer resume, more ski days, or a bigger truck, and argued that the longing itself is not wrong. The problem is the direction. We tend to operate with a scarcity mindset, grabbing and hoarding, when the spiritual physics of glory actually work the other way around. The path the text describes runs downward, not upward.

The center of that downward path is Jesus himself. John walked through the hymn in Philippians 2 to show that Christ, who is eternally God and has no need to prove anything, did not clutch his equality with God but emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, the Greek word doulos, someone with no control over any part of their own life. The security that made that possible was the Father's love. Because Jesus already knew who he was and already had the Father's love, he could let go freely. Adam grabbed when he should have trusted. Jesus did the opposite, and the Father's response was to exalt him above every name.

Pastor Carl brought the same theme through the book of Obadiah, where Edom's ruin traces directly to pride. They had built their homes high in the rocks, held strong alliances, and felt completely secure. Their question was, 'Who will bring me down to earth?' God's answer through Obadiah was plain: I will. Carl connected Edom's fall to the principle that runs through both testaments: God resists the proud and gives grace to the humble. The judgment that fell on Edom was not arbitrary. It was the return of what Edom had sown, using a moment of family weakness for personal gain while standing back and watching destruction come. The day of the Lord, Obadiah writes, comes on all the nations as you have done, it will be done to you. The antidote is not strategy or strength but the posture the Philippians hymn names: considering others as more important than yourself, following the one who went all the way down so that others could be lifted.

Taught from Philippians 2:5-11 · Obadiah 1 · 1 Peter 5:6-11 · Luke 15 · Romans 13:1-4

The passage taught · 1 Peter 5:6-11

6 Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time;

7 casting all your worries on him, because he cares for you.

8 Be sober and self-controlled. Be watchful. Your adversary, the devil, walks around like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.

9 Withstand him steadfast in your faith, knowing that your brothers who are in the world are undergoing the same sufferings.
